Bruce: in 40 years of providing psychotherapy to people, the issue of politics and religion was always off-limits, until 2016. Since then, people could not stop talking about how upset they were. Religion is still off-limits, but there is no way that people’s feelings about what has been going on can be kept out of what people want to get into and their feelings about it.

What is wrong with people? I think it’s all about hate. They hate the same people he hates (immigrants, which we are all from immigrant backgrounds; people of color, gays, transgenders, anyone not lily white, his hate list is endless). If he’s awake, he’s spewing nothing but hatred, every single day and his supporters emulate him. What they don’t understand is he hates them too, but he loves the donations he receives. They have not figured out, or don’t care, that he is the epitome of a hate filled conman and grifter he was raised to be.

This is shocking to so many of us in the US today because we're young enough not to have lived through earlier dismal times (such as McCarthyism) -- but this is how the world has always "functioned." About half of the global population is deeply neurotic (not unable to function, and not in need of hospitalization, but governed by fear and rage, and unwilling or unable to accept verifiable reality).
Those of us with empathy have to work very hard to try to prevail. We generally do -- you can see progress in industrialized nations over the past 200 years, for ex., tho not enough, bc there's always lots of backlash and it always erases a big chunk of progress.
