today in Shit That Happened While I Was Writing This Shit: Bari Weiss defended her decision in an editorial call this morning

https://x.com/grynbaum/status/2003109023705387478

sorry to force you to click on Elon's Nazi Bar, I'm not seeing this reported anywhere elae

Denise Donaldson's avatar

Gee, she sounds reasonable. That’s some damn good propaganda there. Unless, of course, you know that the story had already been vetted sixteen times to Sunday and cleared by everybody at CBS News.

Dan Beach's avatar

... and Bari Weiss demanding changes to a 60-Minutes pre-vetted segment, right before air time, indicates to me that it was run by Miller et al, and they wanted "equal time." Bari Weiss will destroy the legendary CBS News.

Denise Donaldson's avatar

I don't think it was so much about equal time as it was just killing the story entirely. Miller has no defense, and he knows it.

Carthago Delenda Est's avatar

Miller was asked for his input when the piece was being put together in the beginning and refused, as did a number of other administration spokesholes.

So, by insisting on getting their input at this late date, Weiss is giving them kill rights because she knows the question has been asked and answered.

Cats 🐈🐈‍⬛'s avatar

Yeah, I think hitler sounded reasonable to a bunch of racists who were part of his aryan nation.

Abigail Norling's avatar

Ass kissing dope. I dropped The Post long ago. Maybe it's time to let The Times go too.

Cheri Collins's avatar

I dropped both last year.

Maribeth Ackerman's avatar

WaPo has a weird editorial slant now but their columnists are still breaking real news. They are in DC and have amazing contacts. NYT is also doing amazing reporting, just skip the obvious morons.

Doc Blase''s avatar

Nope. I turned off the TV on November 5, 2024, unsubbed from WaPo and NYT before that.

To do otherwise is to support them and 'reasons' are excuses. Fuck 'em completely.

Doc Blase''s avatar

WAY past time. Way.

Oh fucking Hell... Bari Weiss’s claim that the pulled 60 Minutes investigation on El Salvador’s CECOT prison “did not advance the ball” collapses under even light scrutiny. The segment had cleared editorial and legal review, was fully reported by a veteran correspondent, and was promoted for broadcast before being yanked hours ahead of airtime—an extraordinary step by any newsroom standard. The reporting contained first-hand testimony and documentation about the treatment of people deported by the U.S. government to a foreign mega-prison, which is the very definition of "advancing the ball" in investigative journalism. Pretending otherwise because the administration declined to participate turns government silence into a veto over scrutiny—an idea that reporters inside CBS explicitly rejected. That’s not editorial rigor; it’s capitulation dressed up as some lame-ass prudence. Weiss’s equally lame fallback—that it’s an “old story America already knows”—is equally thin. If that standard held, 60 Minutes would have shuttered decades ago. The point of the piece wasn’t to re-announce that El Salvador has a hardline prison policy; it was to examine the U.S. government’s role in sending people there and the human-rights consequences that followed. Calling that stale is convenient when the facts are uncomfortable. Taken together—her decision to pull a vetted investigation at the last minute and her post-hoc dismissal on X—the posture reads less like newsroom judgment and more like protective cover for an administration that would prefer less daylight on its actions. When journalism “doesn’t advance the ball” only after it risks embarrassing those in power, the problem isn’t the reporting—it’s the referee.

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

It's not credible for her to decide that it should be pulled for "not advancing the ball" hours before airing. In today's media climate, major stories get lost in the noise, and ordinary people never hear them. Someone posted in that twitter thread Jeff linked that they had not heard the story before CBS started promoting this segment. even political junkies can't keep up with everything, and part of what 60 Minutes does (did) is to shine a glaring light on stories people may not have heard about in depth.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

Yes, that's why Baby Ellison hired her, to put a stop to that.

Carol C's avatar

Thanks for the summary, David Simpson. You saved me time for baking today.

I read in the NYTs a month or so ago that psychologists/psychiatrists had interviewed 40 of the ex-CECOT prisoners. They were interviewed individually and the story they told was haunting. The interviewers concluded they were telling the truth because of the similarity in their accounts.

I'm not making excuses for criminals, but due process and the admonishment of cruel and unusual punishment are still part of what makes America, well, America.

This is an important story the NYTs wasn't afraid to tell. I'm afraid the previosuly-most-excellent 60 Minutes is now just an arm of state media.

JCfromNC's avatar

You can change that link from x.com to xcancel.com and avoid giving the Nazi bar any traffic.

Will CBS ever recover? And isn’t Bari gay? MAGA isn’t supposed to like gay people are they? 🤷‍♀️

JD went on to discuss Jasmine Crocketts fingernails and I’m confident her donations soared since he’s a racist piece of shit.

Jeff Tiedrich's avatar

I could have written a whole post just on JD's speech — but that would have meant listening to the whole thing. ugh

Susan Niemann's avatar

Dude… no amount of drugs could get anyone to endure that. People say oh but when the felon is gone we’ll have JD. I say JD can’t even order doughnuts. 🤪

Jeff Tiedrich's avatar

if Donny can't finish out his term, I'm kinda perversely looking forward to President Couchfuck. he's so repellent, no way MAGA follows him anywhere

Susan Niemann's avatar

Agree. He doesn’t have what it takes to have a cult following.

arne link's avatar

IDK, he said all the right and hateful things at the Turning Point hate fest. Will he dump his brown wife, marry Erica and lead the Nazi party? We live in interesting times...

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

It's not about saying all the right things. On any given day, Trump could take 6 different positions but MAGA doesn't care because he's TRUMP, the Golden One. He has a weird charisma to his base that can't be duplicated and which Vance certainly doesn't share. Most MAGAs don't feel the same way about Vance that Tammy Faye Kirk does.

Carol C's avatar

Usha Vance may do the dumping.

Susan Niemann's avatar

Interesting times is right! 🤣. I think Usha might be just as extreme as her husband….

It had better because I'm not going to hang around until I'm 150 years old just to see the end of the movie.

Paula Dean's avatar

I'm pretty sure I wouldn't survive more than 2 more years of magats. I'm counting on their demise by the end of next year. How many lives have they ruined so far? How many lives have they ended? I think millions have grounds for a civil lawsuit....perhaps billions!

Dr J's Sanity Space's avatar

Dr J's Sanity Space's avatar

Susan Niemann's avatar

I’d like to write those obits. 😂😂

MzNicky in East Jesus, TN's avatar

George in Atlanta's avatar

Even *if* Couchfuck ever sits behind the Resolute, there will be no Taking Over(TM)... by him. He's an empty suit operated by remote control from Palo Alto. What we would get is the spectacle of collapsed populist power supplanted by would-be Tech-bro suzerainty. There would then be the Reign Of The Twelve Kings whereby said bros tear each other apart as each pursues their individual dream of Yarvinesque monarchy. This will be attempted with no support from the former MAGA proles, who will have long since retreated back into the trailer parks from whence they shuffled.

Paula Dean's avatar

Hey! Some trailer parks are nice! I lived in one on the California coast, next to Santa Cruz in Aptos, which was for 'prosperous retirees'. It was beautifully landscaped and had a charming rustic staircase down to the beach. The "trailers" looked like manufactured homes, with wood trim and completely hidden crawlspaces. It broke my heart to move into an apartment. MAGA's wouldn't have been within 50 miles.

But I grant you, most trailer parks are anything but park-like.

MzNicky in East Jesus, TN's avatar

It’s a way of punching down — synonymous with “redneck white trash.” And we wonder why working-class voters don’t flock to the liberal-Dem side.

George in Atlanta's avatar

Yeah, I get Not All Trailer Parks objections every time I use this shorthand. It's stereotyping, and reprehensible, but these are harsh times. It's economically contextual, though, a manufactured home in Santa Cruz isn't in the same universe as one in rural Georgia.

Carol C's avatar

I went to Palo Alto for a protest. The Palantir headquarters was on my walking route. Creepy! Peter Thiel might have been inside!

I live a few towns away in a 1952 starter house surrounded by new $6 million homes. Some of these new neighbors might lean Yarvinesque. I don’t know them yet, but they put up 12 foot high inflatable decorations, ghosts, turkeys, Santa bears. Is that a clue? There are quite a few Cybertrucks on the road. I take that as a clue.

Maria Devereux's avatar

I'd say 12 ft high inflatable lawn decorations are a more acceptable short- hand than trailer parks. There are plenty of reasons people may live in a trailer park, but there's just no excuse for those damn decorations. Ditto the space junk Nazimobiles.

Todd Goldman (DrJenAdjacent)'s avatar

No way that marriage survives the term. He will get divorced and marry Kirk's widow. The project 2025 billionaire overlords are like the movie moguls of old so a marriage of political "stars" isn't completely far fetched.

I hope Crockett's donations soared. She is a rock start. He is a shit bomb.

I think that Weiss is a German-Jewish name, so I wonder about Bari Weiss supporting a Nazi regime like Trump's. Seems like she is cutting off her nose to spite her face. Of course for her it may be all about the money. What a good capitalist.

I don't know if CBS will ever recover. It is early days yet. Look at companies in Germany that were complicit with Hitler, and yet IG Rheinmetall is still in business and they opened in 1889. I believe they were complicit in the Nazi regime, and now they are helping Ukraine build drones. Back under Hitler they helped Germany make war. At least they are on the right side now, so perhaps they have learned something. VW is still in existence and they supported Hitler. So did ThyssenKrupp. They are now a multinational company doing business around the world. So, if Germany is an example, people will forget transgressions of some businesses and others not.

What could happen instead is what happened to this law firm that Robert Hubbell talks about in his Substack today.

"The law firm of Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft was one of Wall Street’s oldest firms. Then it made a deal with the Trump administration, pledging to end the promotion of diversity and inclusion among its lawyers and to provide free legal services to clients of Trump’s choosing.

Cadwalader’s deal with the devil caused dozens of top partners to leave the firm, pushing it to the brink of collapse. Cadwalader has been forced to merge (as the junior partner) with a much larger global law firm. For all intents and purposes, Cadwalader will cease to exist.

There is a moral in Cadwalader’s demise for all of American business. Accountability will come for everyone—law firms, universities, media companies, and social media platforms. It may take a while, but it will happen. And remember, everything Trump touches dies.

Capitulating to Trump will be remembered as a sign of cowardice and treason, while opposing Trump will be viewed as an act of patriotic heroism. We are on the right side of history. Cadwalader, the Ellisons, and Bari Weiss are not. The wheels of justice turn slowly, but they grind exceedingly fine."

Let us hope we do not forget.

Susan Niemann's avatar

Thanks for this. Gives me hope. I have to remain hopeful. You’re so right “ accountability will Come for everyone”. ✌️

Linda Weide's avatar

Americans are realizing that they don't want to live in a fascist regime with all of the elements that go along with that, even if they did not realize it before the election. Now they learn. Many people lack experiences and imagination and need to actually experience things to learn. Many people actually took Trump at his word. Many of us know to be critical of what people tell us and look at how reliable they are. Some are learning now that Trump is a big liar at worst, and at best, is not able to do what he says he will do.

Lynn Van Haren's avatar

I hope that happens to Paul Weiss, the first law firm to capitulate

Rachel C's avatar

Peter Thiel and Scott Bessent are gay, so maybe it’s okay if you’re on their side 👹

Dave Drell's avatar

But… what about the bathroom problem? If I see them in a men’s room do I panic? Can I just ask them to use the “Family Restroom”? Are gays allowed in a Family Restroom?

Do I worry standing at the urinal that my butt might get a

look over?

Rachel C's avatar

No, but they are Looking 🤭👹

Linda Weide's avatar

This is just not an issue in many European countries. I love the airport bathrooms in Sweden because they don't have genders on the door. You just use the bathroom, and they put enough money into it that they have closets for each toilet instead of stalls where you could stalk people. I have been known to travel and take my young daughter and her friends to the mens bathrooms, also at the Opera when the mens has no line and the women's is snaking around the hallway. Ridiculously inefficient, and we don't segregate the bathrooms in our homes. I have also been at a conference where on the small intermission and lunch break I went to the mens bathroom with one man at the urinal, and I did not look at him. It would have been rude. However, it is also rude that at a conference with a handful of men and tens of women they have one bathroom for each gender.

Linda Weide's avatar

They are gay and haters, which does not exempt them from the evil moniker. I know other hateful gay people, none of which I are my friends. I judge people by the content of their character not their superficial attributes. Being gay does not prevent people from being horrid assholes. The Republican party attracts them.

Rachel C's avatar

I know. It was just a snarky remark 👹

The Couch Casanova is trying his damnedest to illicit something other than “Wet Noodle” energy from the MAGA base but because he fucking sucks — like they all do — he falls face first.

The problem with an authoritarian built around personalism Vs ideology is that it will always fracture and die when the leader dies. Their scramble for relevance is showing panic. They know Donnie’s days are severely numbered.

On being white. Trump heard Canada is called “The Great White North” so he thinks it must be for whites onlly. That might explain things.

Kay-El's avatar

Does the same reasoning apply to South Africa? It’s in the “South” where he has many “fans”

George in Atlanta's avatar

Back in the times of Politically-Correct cancellations (remember that? so dreamy....), I had a younger acquaintance jump all in my shit because I used the antiquated term "Darkest Africa". The assumed implication was obviously racist, the quaint 19th Century meaning was reference to how little the continent had been explored at the time. That I was indelicate for such a delicate time was not at all outweighed by his being a prissy little shit.

arne link's avatar

That is so funny. I didn't ever equate that term with black skin. At least the young one was defending the people and that is encouraging.

George in Atlanta's avatar

He was. His defense was against an attack that didn't exist. He wasn't stupid, it was performative, it made him feel good about himself.

arne link's avatar

Is that bad? At least he was feeling good about a decent thing and not a Nazi thing. I'll give him a pass.

George in Atlanta's avatar

Not really 'bad' in the sense of *BAD*, just bad faith. A mere irritant to me. But not completely harmless. It appears that such sophistry was a non-trivial factor in pissing off those who became the alt-Right, then MAGAs. I wouldn't go so far as to say that using disingenuous accusations as a way to exercise power over people 'got us' Donald Trump. It was all part of a wonderful stew of Leftist over-reach and neglect. But that's for another day.

Might also explain his, uh, understanding of "political asylum."

Todd Goldman (DrJenAdjacent)'s avatar

Yet another irony of "Has Feminism failed Women" bullshit "debate" is that more than 50 years ago, CBS was the channel that hosted the Mary Tyler Moore show, a program about a divorcee (that part always went unsaid) who moved across the country to make it on her own. That show could not be greenlit at today's CBS. Barri Weiss, a Jewish lesbian, owes much to the legacy of the Mary Richards character, an independent woman in the workplace who was running a news room.

Unlike that character, who was extremely loyal to her whacky workplace family, Weiss has no problem selling out to make a buck. She's foolish if she thinks, assuming our current timeline plays out unchanged, her project 2025 overlords would allow "her kind" to stay in a white-male-Christian-heterosexually-dominated USA. Or maybe she is just so selfish and greedy she believes she will be able to afford a Trump condo on the big beautiful Trump branded Gaza strip (she seems to be not just pro-Israel, but also pro genocide and anti-Palestine) when they kick her ass out of the country.

Who cares what happens to everyone else as she pulls the ladder up behind her. In the meantime she will have hers, as for everyone else, let them eat cake.

P.S. I normally don't like to cross post, but my wife wrote more about this, this morning, and I am having a hard time containing my outrage (https://vajenda.substack.com/p/has-feminism-failed-women-is-not )

Thank you for your columns...they're one of the few things keeping us sane lately. I agree with what you said about Margaret Brennan. One thing we can count on is the total lack of charm&ease with others of the tech bros. I think the plan was JD would be VP&Elon would be permanently parked in the oval. Many of us were surprised at how actually stupid&revolting Musk was. There’s also Elon’s complete incompetence.

JD fills me,at least, with a sense of revulsion. His name changes, his fluid opinions? The puzzle of his marriage? His book? Obsequiousness towards Trump…

The bros revolting nature may save us.

Yup, I think you're right, Suki. The single most defining feature of these fuckups is their inability to play well with others. Even if they were good at anything besides being assholes, wanting to fuck over everyone on the planet & the planet itself...it's gonna be a factor that bites ya in the ass.
