I found out we were Jewish when I was 8. I overheard an argument between him and my Great Grandfather after an aunt on the other side of the family made a snide antisemitic comment and my Great Grandfather let her have it. I know being Jewish comes down a continuous female line and my Jewish side is my Mother’s paternal side - but it colored my whole life from that point on and all the other members of my generation when our parents had to tell us. I’m proud of my heritage but, I don’t talk about it in public- not here in the deep South.
