Carl, I can tell you I was dismayed that my daughter, who is at University in Germany, and has a small internet hobby business, had to pay taxes this year. Not because she should not pay taxes, but because she had to pay into social security and medicare. She will very likely not collect on either one. However, to do this, she has gone from being an innocuous person in the world, to someone who gave Elon Musk her bank routing number. That was my biggest concern.
Unless things turn around greatly in the US before my daughter permanently settles herself into Germany, where she is a part of a German public health insurance that technically will follow her until death, she will not be collecting medicare, because right now Americans who have paid into it do not get to collect it unless you live in the US. Since most health care systems are cheaper than the US, it would be cheaper for the US to pay for people to be cared for abroad than in the US. She might get social security from the US, but I am not sure it won't be privatized and destroyed. A grand theft of gargantuan proportions, that has me concerned my husband and I won't be able to collect from a life of working in the US either.
Also, when you live abroad and are not a billionaire, or even a millionaire, you have to file in both the country you earn money in and the US. You are not allowed to have investments abroad, and you will pay the taxes whichever place is higher. This is not true of every country, but it is of the US, so many Americans are giving up their citizenship. Even then, you have to file US taxes for 10 years or you won't be collecting your social security or other monies owed to you, even if you don't owe the US a single penny.
Trump is wary of Americans abroad, thus the part of the SAVE act which has us having to vote in person. Again, unless you are super wealthy that is not so doable. And, who wants to fly to the US just to vote. No one. It also will have the effect of disenfranchising those in the military who are abroad as well. So, we want to only file where we have to pay, and be able to vote by mail, or email, or fax. It varies from state to state what we can do. We also want enough time in which to do this.
