this one's a bit of a podge of hodge, I know. it's basically all the items I didn't have room for in the past week's posts, all wrapped up in one untidy bow

Mike Hammer's avatar

So the DOGE administrators are DOGEBAGS?

Susan Burgess's avatar

Anyone can easily be befooled by what they find while doing research Jeff my good man. I’m constantly asking myself . . . is that for real?

Keep up the true-reality hodge podge! The ridiculousness of it all needs to constantly be exposed!

Stephanie Lajeskie's avatar

Thanks for admitting when you make a mistake, Jeff. The good news is that your readers understand that it can happen (especially with all the shit you have to sift through daily). The bad news is that you’ll never get a job with Fox News.

Jeff Tiedrich's avatar

I got a lot of emails — some of them quite angry — about the errors. so I really couldn't in all good conscience let it go without correcting the record

Kay-El's avatar

Correcting one’s errors is fine, people pointing out errors is acceptable, coming unglued is ridiculous.

Patrick Daniels aka Cromulent1's avatar

The rise of hatred and insanity in America isn’t a new phenomenon, the Tea Party kicked in when Obama was elected, its morphed into madness from my cheap seat, Kay-EI, dystopian fantasy is our new reality!!

Uh, Patrick, we really need to start with Ronnie Raygun. He started this shit.

Don’t beat yourself up — Missouri is still a MAGA cesspool, and the state legislature is famous for overturning the voters’ will. I’ll believe we have won the right to reproductive freedom here when I see it added to the Missouri constitution.

Susan Niemann's avatar

Agree with you....I live in the NE corner of MO.... very very rural. I remember when it was a blue state.

Hannah's avatar

We feel for you. I remember liking McCaskill and I live all the way on the left coast. Best of luck.

Hannah's avatar

Did I spell her name right. Sorry if I didn't.

Susan Niemann's avatar

Now that you mention it, I wonder if I spelled it right! OOPS. She was a dynamite leader!

My Mom grew up in MO. When we were growing up, her favorite expression when she thought we were pulling her leg was, "I was born in the Show Me state, you know what that means." I'm sure she would be embarrassed of her state now.

Gosh, angry? Don't people have actual lives? I just hate the times we live in, so much useless anger. Remember the story about school kids meditating and how it calmed them down so they could concentrate. Well, the "authorities" put a quick stop to that shit. Let chaos reign, I guess.

Jeff Tiedrich's avatar

the angry people were generally of a mind that I was punching down at a person who didn't deserve it. I can't say that they don't have a point

You know what happened when I fact checked a "friend's" incorrect post? She deleted it, so there would be no record of me fact checking it, and posted it again with the same incorrect fact. Some people just don't care if they're wrong, they just want a reason to be angry.

FFS. We're all friends here. Corrections are good and if well-intentioned will be edited in. But for the love of Christ on a broken cracker: DO NOT start throwing feces on our wonderful Oracle here (that's you, Jeff) who sheds light on all the crazed fuckery we must deal with daily. Errors, Smerrors. You own up to them. That's the beauty of the moment that we all experience here together. This is called IRL (In Real Life).

Marie Martin's avatar

I’m sorry. But screw them! Let them try to do something like this. Most couldn’t come close. Not kissing up. It’s just that every time I read your column, it strikes me that your job is tough, and your commitment strong. Deborah Hunter's avatar

I have so many more things to get angry about than if you made an error, Jeff. Apparently, all the nut cases aren't all on the MAGA side.

Susan Niemann's avatar

1. No one whose name is "Markwayne" can ever be taken seriously.

2. AOC is right. Marge is a waste of time and air and dumb as floor tile. It's just sad to see all this money being wasted on these clowns.

3. Nancy Mace lost. (She's a "C") Sarah McBride emerged the clear winner by not taking the bait.

4. Don't worry about your corrections. We've all been sucked in to the bullshit. I believed a meme that 9 GOP congressmen had been served divorce papers. 🤦‍♀️

Kristy Kanen's avatar

Deborah Hunter's avatar

The name Markwayne is so Deliverance sounding. Did his parents not know how to put a space between two words? Well, it's Oklahoma, sigh.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

He sure is, claims to be part native, in Oklahoma could be true, but likely a lie.

Kristy Kanen's avatar

Uh oh ! Is Markwayne a POCAHONTAS ?

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

"Markwayne appears to be 1/128 Cherokee by blood. Although, he is a citizen of Cherokee Nation as that tribe has no blood quantum .." from Quora..

Cheryl ODonnell's avatar

There’s a name for him, then. Pretendian. 1/128 does not count.

Hannah's avatar

Well I am 1/8th Cherokee by marriage so there, Markwayne. Suck on that.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

Mace is a typical weird republican woman, doing her best to take the rights away from other women, especially bodily-autonomy, and screaming how she "protects" other women from a very small part of the population who are harming no one. I would far rather share a bathroom with many trans-women than Nancy Mace, because she's probably one of those weirdos who preaches bullshit while you are washing your hands, trying to avoid eye-contact with the crazy lady, so you can escape her loud, hateful, lies.

Cheryl ODonnell's avatar

Jeff, does he read your fine writing? That and a few Big Macs could be coronary-inducing.

Hannah's avatar

John Oliver made the point that Markwayne had such stupid parents they couldn't even decide on a name. It's funny when he said it.

Same holds true for Dems. Time to dial it back. The general public does not like having gay rights drilled into them non stop. If we want to win the Mid terms we need to change the message a bit. Don’t stop believing in their rights but not make it a pivotal part of the Democrat platform.

Other things need to lose their prominence as well so we are not perceived as a party of the wingnuts.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

We aren't throwing anything in their faces, they are the ones shrieking about pronouns, I just call someone whatever they wish to be called. It's not hard. They just lie and make shit up, anyway.

arne link's avatar

Hah! You said "Democrat". That's not the name of the party. It is the Democratic Party.

Hannah's avatar

The Democratic party didn't make gay or trans rights a big part of their message. I don't think they support groups that suffer from hate enough. We should be loud and clear that we won't put up with that shit.

I don't understand why you think people don't want to hear that we support them.

Marie Martin's avatar

But we do have to examine our approach. Something went wrong. And, unless we believe they cheated or fucked with the numbers, we have to face that, like it or not, Harris’s message didn’t strike the mark. We need to understand.

Tully's avatar

Two things I've heard from others is when she said, "I'm a capitalist" as if she was addressing the upper crust and didn't realize many see them as the money takers. Also, when she said she couldn't think of anything she'd do different than Biden. With his current low approval numbers, that didn't go over well. Otherwise, I thought her campaign was uplifting and flawless.

Read a Tim Snyder-ish quote on resisting: Never refer to turd at "President-Elect, or "President" "Mr. T". Use a blanket term like "republicans". IOW, show no respect for the person, title. Starve him of tweet or other sm mentions which he craves.

Linda Weide's avatar

Speaking of corn. I read a the Guardian article saying that people who voted for Trump are happy with his picks. Clearly they picked these people to illustrate this sector of the population. I am wanting them to revisit these same people every 6 months.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/nov/24/trump-supporters-react-cabinet-picks?utm_term=674323596e028330a2c1d2198ed272aa&utm_campaign=GuardianTodayUS&utm_source=esp&utm_medium=Email&CMP=GTUS_email

Quite a contrast with what Prof. Timothy Snyder is saying of Pete Hegseth today. Not so much focusing on the rapist aspect, although included, but covering other aspects that make him totally unqualified to be Sec Def. https://open.substack.com/pub/snyder/p/pete-hegseth-the-short-course?r=f0qfn&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

Honestly, these reasons are even scarier.

Rick Calegari's avatar

Good info and many more reasons why this sexual abusing fascist prick should go by the Gaetzside. Wondering if Fox News would let him come back or like most of dear leader's Cabinet picks, will his "qualifications" not matter?

Susan Burgess's avatar

It seems to me Don the Con wants inept know-nothings in all the key positions. He’s trying to put children in these key positions. He’s doing that so the country will be vulnerable to . . . probably Vladimir Putin.

If our country was attacked, we will be so purposefully disorganized there would be nothing we could do to stop it. It would be a pre-planned set up.

Putin’s government could be ready now to take over the U.S.

Donny will gladly greet him at the Whitehouse helicopter pad as Putin flies in on Marine One.

Linda Weide's avatar

Susan, because Trump like so many idiots believes in destroying or what Elon Musk likes to say, he is a Disruptor, which is what you do when people are in cults and you need to deprogram them, or using drugs, but not when you are raising a child, or running a country. Of course Trump and Musk have never done either. Trump was the vehicle through which a lot of bad actors ran the country before while he mostly golfed. I says , send a plague of gophers to Mar-a-lago and disrupt his golf games.

Putin was handed the US on a platter with Trump's win, but he helped get his best asset into the White House again, along with another asset, or is Musk Trump's handler for Putin? Time will tell.

I have said Trump was a Russian deep cover spy when he first ran every night at dinner, in a tongue in cheek manner. I said he was planted to create chaos in the country. Putin, with dangerous media war on our people, over the years, along with his buddies from other ililberal countries, has been bombarding us with bots, and planting information for their US assets to spread on their own, as they suck up to Trump who is the master spreader of Russian disinformation. Once the US is out of the way, what will happen. It is not going to play itself out as Putin wants because Russia will still be a terrible place to live, just one that added the US to its list of terrible places to live as they jealously go after the rest.

Scandinavia is ready for Putin by updating their war preparedness. Read this article, and look at the 4 booklets for the civilian population and then make your own hybrid. They are all in English. Get ready for the war within that Trump is going to start on January 20, 2025. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cjr4zwj2lgdo

Susan Burgess's avatar

Do you think what he meant when he said he’d be dictator for one day means Putin will be dictator on day 2 ? Himself and so many others in Donny’s circle have been colluding with Vlad for at least 10 years. This is the takeover. Who will be sitting at the resolute desk?

Linda Weide's avatar

Actually, Xi will be dictator on Day 2 and Putin on day 1 with Trump as his proxy. He is already dictating Trump's cast of character appointments according to Prof. Timothy Snyder. https://open.substack.com/pub/snyder/p/the-submission-chain?r=f0qfn&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

Susan Burgess's avatar

Kristy Kanen's avatar

Has it all been for nothing ?

Bonnie Council's avatar

It’s the absurdity that these people actually want to undermine & ultimately “replace” our democracy with whatever form of government their individual brains have colluded to devise that terrifies me. They’ll probably never agree on anything, but whatever mess they leave behind may be unrepairable.

Linda Weide's avatar

As my Book Club was reading Project 2025, we turned to Andra Watkin's Substack because she has pieces that have made Christian Nationalism and the indoctrination of these people pretty clear. Since it is outside of my daily experience, I can see how that is a powerful piece of the picks. We see that they are both CNs, as well as Russian assets, in that an asset can be intentional or unintentional, but for many it is some of both. They are selling Putin's talking points and propaganda as much as they are Trump's.

The important thing about CNs, or as Prof. Timothy Snyder calles them Christian Reconstructionists, is that they are all about the End-of Days. The old school CNs don't need us all to bow to their Lord to get where they want to go, but the newer The New Apostolic Reformation Charismatic Christians believe that God is not coming to take them to Heaven unless EVERYONE writ large on the planet is living in what they call A Godly manner, meaning what they say HE wants. We are in the way of their eternal happiness. So, they have to force it on us, and for that they get points.

Given that the Congress, Supreme Court and White House are filled with these Project 2025 writing people, who are singular in their determination, and do not care about temporal life supposedly, everything is about that goal. So, schooling does not matter, the environment, even the economy, or avoiding war and nuclear catastrophe does not matter. I don't believe Putin is this kind of Christian (or any kind for that matter), so I am guessing he isn't going to want Trump to let Hegseth go all the way into leading us into nuclear annihilation, but that is just my guess.

Teri's avatar

Linda Weird, you solved a ten year old mystery. Everything you wrote about CR is totally new to me. I thought this was about making the US an oligarchy. 10 years ago, a good, kind, smart Christian woman & I were acquainted working on a town isshue in a group of 20. I noticed at first meeting most vehicles had "turd" or religious bumper stickers. One day she suddenly blurted out "are you a Christian?!". I was shocked, said "what does that have to do with our volunteer efforts?" She apologized, but turd was new into politics and they were gung ho for him. In disgust, I quietly resigned.

Teri's avatar

Linda Weird, *Weide 🥴 Days after Access HW tape came out, she called me, asked me to rejoin group. I unloaded in her, "how can you all be Christian/ "grab 'em by the p"? She finally said " We answer to a higher God". I finally get the cognitive dissonance: they were all about The End Times, turd was the conduit.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

No they don't. They answer to their preacher, dumb-asses.

Linda Weide's avatar

Teri, glad I could shed some light. It sounds like a wise move to put distance between yourself and this group. Andra Watkins is an expert on Christian Nationalism or as Prof. Timothy Snyder calls it, Christian Reconstructionism.

https://andrawatkins.substack.com/p/christian-nationalists-and-the-end

https://open.substack.com/pub/snyder/p/pete-hegseth-the-short-course?r=f0qfn&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

Snyder has this piece today, but he did a series of 3 pieces on The Handmaid's Tale and how is fits with the goals of this administration which he calls. Handmaid Fails.

Next will be loyalty oaths, as in the 1950s, and compulsory church attendance. Anyone who is not an avowed Christian will be frozen out.

Linda Weide's avatar

I was envisioning that converting to Christian Nationalism would be forced on us, and refusal would lead to waterboarding, prison or deportation.

Linda Fulcher's avatar

I don't care what they do to me. I'm 74 and have lived my life. I am an atheist and escaped the clutches of the Catholic Church a long time ago, and I will not pretend to convert for anyone or anything. I hate the damage that religion has done.

Teri's avatar

Linda, nukes set off anywhere would make that part of the world uninhabitable. It would not be land, businesses to be plundered. Isn't Putin about claiming territory & businesses to take over?

Linda Weide's avatar

This is what I get from the US government.

ready.gov_nuclear-explosion-hazard-info-sheet.pdf

This is what I get from the Norwegian government.

This is what I get from the Swedish government.

https://rib.msb.se/filer/pdf/30874.pdf

This is what I get from the Finnish government.

https://www.suomi.fi/guides/preparedness

This is what I get from the Danish government.

https://www.brs.dk/en/prepared/

There are a lot of survivalists in the USA who are probably really well prepared. But there is a basic level of preparedness we should all be having. You can use any combination of the above brochures, but at least start thinking about what you could be preparing for.

I read an article where a woman Ukrainian was interviewed who had survived Chernobyl. She was telling us that instead of staying inside for 3 days and taking iodine tablets, or something like that, Gorbachev made them all march and she went with her 4-year-old daughter and marched, because they did not know any better. I wished more people knew better than to follow their leadership, but people also were not given a choice. What I am reading is that one has to stay low for about a week before the air clears. One will want rain to come. It is something we should not be looking at as inevitable death, but what do we need to get beyond it. Looking at bomb shelters. The USA has relied on deterrence, but juvenile Americans that put the unserious junior high schoolers in charge, means that the rest of us need to be the adults.

un poco loco's avatar

Hegseth creeps me the fuck out.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

Yep, he reeks of "stranger danger".

Teri's avatar

Linda, your 2nd link on Pete Hegseth shows his disqualication -- he wants a Holy War. America run by. Christian values, or you are the enemy. To be converted, or ??.

Hannah's avatar

I am for not calling these so-called Christians any kind of Christian.

They are cult members trying to co-opt the name Christian. I call them so-called believers in Christ who don't share or demonstrate Christian values.

BTW, I am not a Christian so I have no agenda other than to call these fuckers out.

Hannah's avatar

The sexual predator part really just speaks to his being a rapist and serial adulterer. That's enough for most normal people.

He has sort of ideas that reflect another illness. His belief of a false Christianity to rule us and the rest of the world.

The guy is stupid and stupidity as SecDef could be extremely dangerous.

They stole it from people telling them they were deranged about Hillary, and Obama, not recognizing their qualifications, and believing the Russian and NYT (who was merrily selling us out even then) propaganda. Alas, he remains a negativity machine, albeit a deteriorating one. He in unable to do anything constructive and lives for chaos, which is what he is creating in his new administration. All the infighting is just what he wants so nothing can get done. Whatever he may say, he only wants everyone to be at everyone else's throats. He is out to destroy our country and our planet. I am alarmed by anyone who wants to try and work with him. It is impossible. Resistance is all we have as a counter to his monstrous energy.

Ellis Weiner's avatar

I disagree. He creates chaos, but what he lives for is money and revenge (maybe not in that order). Of course, he has to deal with his vast ignorance, short attention span and lack of discipline, susceptiblity to flattery, need for daddy-substitute approval, and ongoing mental deterioration. Those around him know this, and yes, that will put them at each other's throats to see who can manipulate him better.

Sharon, on your advice I watched the comedic. "The Death of Stalin" on Amz Prime yesterday. Succession intrigue. 🫣

His own team is in fisticuffs, what could possibly go wrong Dr.?

Dave Drell's avatar

Yea, the more chaos at the top with this group of numb-minded morons, the less will get done on their “agenda”. Go fight amongst yourselves, we will enjoy

the shit show.

Bannon=Deconstructionism.

That’s what really scares me.

Along with the Putin-Trump team.

AOC and the originator of unplugged controller for the win!

We all get snookered from time to time, Jeff. The difference is some people have the integrity to admit it when it happens to them - thanks for being that type of human.

Not sure why, in 2024, buildings in DC can't be retrofitted with unisex bathrooms. This isn't a new concept. Anyone who's been on an airplane uses gender- neutral facilities. FFS. 🙄

Marty's avatar

In Europe, public bathrooms are often unisex. Works. No problem. Never felt threatened.

The dinosaurs that roam the halls would not permit it!

Trump’s little Johnson putting MTG together with Elon and Vivek has to be the funniest thing this week. If there's an opening for Fly On The Wall, I'm definitely applying.

arne link's avatar

Oh, Elon will soon confer a child upon her and all shall be as it should be.

Anita Smibert's avatar

What a horrible thought. We'll all be asking Who Let The Doge Out.

This week was impossible to summarize. Coulda been twenty-eleven pieces on the clown car of shitweasels, rapists, prevaricating grifters and fluffers. If the Old Testament God wasn’t busy elsewhere, Mar-A-Lago woulda been destroyed by lighting bolts.

But as the song goes: “We ready. We ready. We ready. For y’all.”

Well…your description of the chaos-monkey is spot on! Mace, Mullen, Greene, Hegseth….eek…and poor you has to read about them so we are informed! Thus…no need to apologize for the correction-consider it as clearing up what we ALL thought! Have a great Thanksgiving week everyone!

Hegpeth also fathered a child with his boss during his second marriage. Real pro creator .. 7 kids

1. AOC is correct. Attach one of those big box toys to Mad Marge’s playpen and she can make noises all day long.

2. It’s ironic that one of the programs that should be considered to cut government waste is Elmo’s inefficient space rockets (hat tip to Sweaty Spice for this. Go read him and watch the video)

The way that Minorman Gaetz cajoled and flattered his way into the worst Cabinet nomination in history is an awful reminder of what an incredibly easy mark that malignant narcissist idiot golf nut is. Putin has no doubt used flattery and guile to manipulate trump repeatedly, to America's detriment and Russia's huge advantage. We are screwed so badly. Veterans, is this what you have served and sacrificed for?

He’s about an easy “mark” as anyone coming down the pike in a long time.

So malleable, easy to fool & influence.
