I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but the little that I've read about the impact from assault-weapon ammo -- that it obliterates the area of impact -- make me question the possibility or probability that such a powerful bullet traveling with great force and at high speed could have merely nicked his ear.

In other words, if the bullet was close enough to make contact with his skin, surely it would have done more damage than that -- ?

I think it's been reported that it was glass that nicked him,but I'm going with 'absolutely nothing really hit him',seems like he might've touched a fake blood packet to his ear.

Have you ever worked in the newsroom of a legit newspaper or magazine? I have.

I spent about 15 years in legit newsrooms. I know how reporters and editors operate. (Reporters cultivate sources, conduct interviews -- on the record, off the record, on background -- and pore over documents. Every word that goes into an article is based on something factual and verifiable.) Every employee in any editorial capacity has access to the computer system, which shows every single change in every article, even the deletion of a one-letter typo, and who made the change and when.

So, yes, I have faith in the *legit* MSM. And I encourage everyone who isn't a GOP or a MAGA or a QAnon or a right-wing radical in any way to ***stop*** engaging in knee-jerk press-bashing, which is inaccurate and -- more to the point -- DANGEROUS. That's what *their* side does in order to generate distrust of the press. Therein lies autocracy.

The legit press isn't perfect. No entity or institution is. But everyone who offhandedly bashes it -- especially without knowing how it operates -- is being a useful idiot for the autocratic right. So please get some facts, and please rethink your approach. Thanks.

You worked in legit newsrooms. Key word is legit. I've watched MSNBC for 16 years until recently. No one is saying they're spewing fake news, what some of the commentators are doing is focusing on Biden's age ad nauseum while glossing over Trump's Epstein files and all his other craziness. It's just not my opinion that Tur and Mitchell have been the worst at this. Check out comments from other social media and those 2 are talked about the most. If I want to listen to Biden bashing and Trump being given a pass, I'll watch FOX instead. From what I read, all the major outlets are owned by Republicans. So really how legit is MSNBC on reporting the news in a fair and unbiased manner? As far as bashing the news industry, I don't have to know how to fly a plane in order to comment on it when the door blows off in mid flight. From other comments you've made in the past about the election, are you sure you're not sitting on the fence about this one with one foot in the MAGA pasture? And why are you always telling the rest of us how to think and feel? You are more than entitled to your opinion about all of this, but that doesn't mean you're going to try and tell me what mine should be. There - got it off my chest what I've wanted to say for a couple of days now.

Thank you! I said nearly the same thing yesterday to this same commenter. Maybe in days of yore newsrooms and reporters truly were just reporting on the facts of the story. She doesn't seem to realize we can all see that is no longer true, that "news" is slanted to appease the corporate owners' self-interests and particular stories are pushed while others are ignored.

I made my comment because I have felt I was being lectured to about how I should think/feel about her post. It happened the other day and it was personal. Because we don't know each other and these are written text/posts, I feel we have to be careful in our delivery. Maybe the thought/message is good, but you can turn people off with the methods you use to state your opinion. I don't try and change anyone's mind wirh my posts. I'm just venting and stating my opinion or life experience.

Axios is reporting that President Biden is dropping out this weekend.

That’s the title, but the actual story says none of that.

Our MSM is in the tank for Trump and they are making it obvious.

I worked in television news in DC for many, many years and I know too well what bullshit goes on.

Here’s Axios.

Problem is those "legit" newsrooms were bought out years ago by Rupert Murdoch, Jeff Bezos, whoever owns the NYT now, etc. I believe the newsrooms you worked in were "legit". I do not believe the media, paper or television is "legit" any longer. Also, if people want to share their disappointment and disgust at how this incident and many others with trump is being reported, well.... a "legit" journalist would allow them to do that with grace. Not tell them to stop. So I'm sorry, but I'm not stopping but thank you for expressing your opinion.

That's how it used to be. But is not the case any longer, case in point "The Washington Post" which was always my go-to paper, has now hired a Murdoch Tabloid man, Will Lewis to run the place. He is presently in court in the UK, for his role in deleting Emails in the phone hacking scandal, and other deeds he performed in his role in the venal UK tabloid arena. When he bought the paper, Bezos had an agreement not to interfere with the running of the newsroom. And he didn't. Under the professional Icon Marty Baron (who helped break the story about the child abuse in the Catholic church in his paper at the time the "Boston Globe".) the paper kept to professional standards and was excellent. Baron retired, and Bezos on the advice of publisher Fred Ryan (the Reagan library keeper) hired Sally Buzbee who turned out to be the queen of both-siderism. Forced birther propaganda was normalized, and not fact-checked, more right-winger "Opinionists" were hired, and worst of all, the started using MAGA-buzzwords in their poorly edited headlines that were so bad, we all complained in the comments and they finally were to changed to something more accurate. Lewis hired another tabloid crony to along with a second crony to replace the "Both sides" Buzbee and the team absolutely revolted He also pressured the paper not to cover his dirty deeds abroad. She resisted and he fired her.

I understand defending your profession, but it's like the so-called reporters don't know their history, or anything about their story and publish every event as if it happens in a vacuum, medical misinformation abounds for instance:

there is no heart at six weeks, you need heartvalves to have a heartbeat, and those form much later, what they hear is primitive electrical impulses that can be duplicated in a petrie dish.

When you act as stenographer for the far right without fact checking the lies, you ARE part of the problem.

Debris from the podium was the reason for any injury inflicted on ear. An AR round traveling at supersonic speed does a heck of alot more damage than what we saw. I saw no damage...just the bright red stuff on ear.

Expand full comment
Dee Whitman's avatar

That makes much more sense. I too had questioned the notion that an assault-weapon bullet could merely nick an ear. (Initially I read / heard that teleprompter glass was the culprit, but that was debunked; I’d not read / heard that podium debris was the culprit; that makes sense.)

Here is what I perceive. Photos of the shattered teleprompter show that it was only the upper corner. It could easily have been a fine shard or grain of glass that went flying and hit his ear. He winced and held his ear as though he had just been stung by a wasp, not shot by a bullet. A bullet from the weapon used, whizzing that close to his head, would have knocked him down and torn off his ear if not half of his face! He was more concerned about photo ops and losing his shoes. Perhaps the reason his heavy leather shoes flew off his feet was because of the lift inserts. His heels (and bone spurs!) are positioned so high in his shoes that his shoes are in danger of falling off. That is probably why he has difficulty with stairs and declines. I saw a picture of a shoe and a lift insert lying in the grass alongside the platform. I don't know if it was genuine—did anyone else see it? His chief concern was about his shoes and he did not ask if anyone was hurt!

Expand full comment
Ethereal fairy Natalie's avatar

He didn't ask if anyone was hurt because he didn't care. He knew some enterprising journalist can expose his vanity, in using lifts in his shoes, if indeed he does, which I suspect he would because he is not 6'2".

And ***that*** is exactly the problem, why we all are going with our theories. Because there is no information being released. And apparently no enterprising investigative reporters willing to dig.

I don’t think the shooter intended to hit tRump. He was a second amendment guy, apparently, living with his MAGA family. What makes the most sense to me is that he thought he would die a hero for his cause by starting the civil war that MAGA is longing for. At the very least it would be good publicity for tRump, and it has been. I would not be surprised at all if it was coordinated with the tRump campaign - maybe the shooter wasn’t even supposed to be killed
