I have actually noticed those changes in headline a lot. A lot of people, me included, write to the Times about their stupid headlines. I think we also should write to the actual reporters, who don't write their own headlines and must be royally PISSED at having their work misrepresented.

In defense of the NYT, check out their two stories last week on the dangers of a trump win. In depth, well argued, and doing the job we all have to do: getting people to SEE those dangers.

“But something has changed for me in the Trump era. I struggle more than I once did to wall off a person’s character from their politics when their politics is binding them to an unusually—and I would say undeniably—destructive person. The lies that MAGA world parrots are so manifestly untrue, and the Trump ethic is so manifestly cruel, that they are difficult to set aside.

If a person insists, despite the overwhelming evidence, that Trump was the target of an assassination plot hatched by Biden and carried out by the FBI, this is more than an intellectual failure; it is a moral failure, and a serious one at that. It’s only reasonable to conclude that such Trump supporters have not made a good-faith effort to understand what is really and truly happening. They are choosing to live within the lie, to invoke the words of the former Czech dissident and playwright Vaclav Havel.”

Armchair analyst here. "I met with pilots, like beautiful Tom Cruise but taller. Handsome, perfect people..." suggests at least two things:

1. djt has never been able to face his attraction to men -- completely forbidden in his family of origin -- so he has channeled those feelings, + his rage at being unable to be himself, into misogyny. It's the fault of *women*, not his parents (at whom he can never express his multifaceted rage) that he can't be with men -- so he belittles women, encroaches on their boundaries, assaults them, and treats them as *things* (not persons) in myriad other ways.

2. "Handsome, perfect people" = how he sort of sees himself (he *was* handsome when young, in a creepy Nazi Youth way) but also how he *doesn't* see himself (bc he's so filled with shame from trauma early in his life and bc of massive dysfunction always in his family or origin) but wants to see himself; his unconscious thinks, "If only I were a handsome, perfect person, my parents would love me; I would feel safe and secure; I would like myself; my life would have contentment and some joy."

Whadda mess.

As a rule, I don't believe in assigning pathological psychology theories to people but the behavior absolutely does suggest these abnormalities. We have a clear understanding of human development, how people become arrested in childhood emotional states. At the very minimum, narcissistic behavior must have been rewarded a great deal for this man. Whatever the complexities, we each have to face coping behaviors developed that don't fit in a rational adult world. Enabling the behavior is as sick as the acting out. I shudder to think what it would be like to caught up in a delusional hatred & fear of batteries, sharks, & people. It's very concerning that people are playing so fast & loose with mental illness, normalizing unhealthy behavior, & using this man as a figurehead for a great America. It's good to laugh at the absurdity, but also to go beyond mockery to no longer enable sick behavior. Whatever his damage, the man can't be allowed to hold hostage the attention of a nation any longer. He needs to be removed from polite society as responsible adults do with children acting out & people committing crimes. We don't keep unwell children in the room for entertainment & we don't need a scapegoat, either. The man is just a poster child for many societal ills that need addressing. Primarily deceit. When we accept lying as an acceptable means to an end, we are in trouble. Reality becomes a slippery slope. A return to sanity begins with honesty & I think you named elephants in the room well. We have to acknowledge unhealthy behavior for what it is & cease to enable it.
