... and the utterly useless US Senators from the state. I guess after the next storm, Fidel Cancun could send a telegram begging for help to his favorite president... when he gets back to Texas from the Caribbean, anyway...
I just realized: Fidel is not really in the top 5 most-horrible govt officials any more (I'm also counting cabinet picks here, because what a fucking bunch of losers!) He may not even be in the top 10, and he's dropped to #4 on my state shit list, even after Sid Miller departed Tx Ag! wtaf?
Not very well. After the May ‘24 tornado and Hurricane Beryl in June, we were recently dropped by our home insurance carrier (haven’t had a claim on our Houston, TX home in the 23 years we’ve owned), and are having trouble finding insurance because so many companies are bolting from high risk areas. I hate it here 😞
I am sorry all that happened to you Betsy and I hope you can get what you need to move ahead! I can’t imagine the terror and destruction of a tornado. In MA we have an association called the Mass Property Insurance Underwriting Association. They provide homeowner’s policies for people that can’t get the insurance through the usual companies. It is expensive though. Stupid question - does Texas have any association like that? Wishing you and your family healing and a light at the end of the tunnel! 💙🌻
I feel your pain -- we moved to the Austin area after I spent almost 30 yrs in Houston, and the only two things I miss are the many options for great food (especially Asian) and the higher percentage of drivers who know how to drive on freeways, even if it sometimes means doing 85mph in narrow lanes with a Metro bus on one side of you and a semi on the other.
I know part of the reason insurance companies are pulling out are storms like Harvey, but I suspect that they also decided that dropping customers who might not be so profitable wouldn't be a problem, especially with Trump in office.
... but I do NOT miss the "palmetto" bugs (HUGE honking unkillable cockroaches that will eat almost anything) and the mosquitoes, and what the bayous smell like after a hurricane, and 9 months a year of tropical summer, etc, etc...
Maybe we should hope that he gets rid of FEMA and then when those disasters show up (N. Carolina/Houston/New Orleans) those red states will come crying.
Yes our state was so beautiful, but the are giving the developers Carte Blanche to rape it. And don't get me started about the plan to put phospho-gypsum in the roads.
I’d love to see just how long red states like Florida, Louisiana and Texas would survive without FEMA.
Especially considering the utterly incompetent electrical grid in Texas.
And Louisiana's decrepit economy.

Marybeth, I'm sorry that you live in Texas. I hate those motherfucker republican politicians, too.
I am very sorry, Marybeth. Californians are experiencing that throughout the entire state, not just in the LA area.
Floridians too, and our Gov is busy trying to help round up immigrants to please his Orange overlord.

Especially FLORIDUH!
"Red states vote for Donny, lose FEMA, are screwed next time a natural disaster hits" would be a textbook example of FAFO.
I’m a blue dot in the red state of Wi.
🤢😡
I'm a blue dot in the red state of Florida. I love my state but despise the governor

And the hurricane in North Carolina.
