Jeff: I read a great piece about how WaPo & NYT pay scant attention to R & D policy issues but spend more ink on Biden’s a “alleged” feeble mindedness. I think you have written about this but more focus needed for sure

Expand full comment
HulitC's avatar

They make up Biden’s feebleness. Biden is in great physical shape. It’s amazing that DP thinks the Repub media (including NYT & The Wa Post) will promote him over a Repub if he wins the primaries. The media is doing its best to pretend Dems are only for Blacks & Trans, and “tax & spend.”

If trump had actually gotten us out of Afghanistan like he negotiated with the Taliban it would have been an even bigger shit show, but the media would have given him an A+ anyway.

agree, Becky. I am SO disappointed in Steve. We Dems and some Indies lapped up all his talent for writing words that mirrored our sense of grief and anger over t-rumpism. Then suddenly drops in his Substack that he is helping “PILLips. Now I can’t feel any vibes from his patriotic, fervent warnings, historical references, etc. etc. Why in H--- would he put this Wall Street packaged hybrid of Bernie, JFK, and Andrew Yang out there to deceive the electorate? Because F--K YOU, That’s why! Oh and because he is a REPROBLICON!

I can not shake the idea that Steve has been playing us all along. Saying all the things about trump that are in fact true, gathering a loyal contingent of followers, gaining our trust, and then sneaking this guy in under the banner of “people deserve a choice”. Phillips is such a weak candidate that he has less than a snowball’s chance in hell of getting the nomination, much less the presidency. (Hell I’m not sure I would vote for him if he were the nominee. I would be too busy figuring out where I was emigrating to). But Steve has read the room. He knows that Democrats’ favorite game is snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. He knows the Democrats’ penchant for shooting themselves in both feet and the hand not holding the gun. So he has brought the gun. He will sit back and watch the rest. I think he has played the long game here and we have to call him on it.

He had a nice gig there for awhile on MSNBC, etc doing his bit but he must have cracked out of turn as the professional grifters put it. So the easy mark? Dean Phillips. People go back to what they know.

All I know is he took down the MN03 congressional seat and hoping he didn't do more harm than that.

What is the meaning of “cracked out of turn”? I am not a professional grifter, or even an amateur so I need a definition, please.

All I can think of at this late hour is “butt crack” and I am sure that is not what is meant. Or is it?

Expand full comment

The total meaning is well covered in the noir film, The Gifters.

It means some one responded incorrectly in the grift, the con. It could be timing or not correctly saying your "lines" in the actual act of a con. I hope that was helpful. It may even be a goggle search by phrase.

I think the white dudes who do this are following in tffg's footsteps of enhancing their brand. He already said he won't run for re-election because he knows he won't win and yet, still not a clue. So he's cut off that avenue of continuing in gov't. More people know who he is now than before, but that isn't saying much. He will return to obscurity as soon as he drops out.

Is this becoming like an extreme sport for middle-aged and older white dudes? Are they daring the press to dig into their life and find a scandal that blows up their whole family? Is this their version of buying a sports car and having an affair with a 20 year old? Was he bored? The press is asleep at the fucking wheel as we careen toward fascism, so they won't be doing anything useful. I do not believe he thought he had a true shot at becoming President, so it can only be for reasons of self-aggrandisement. I hope the season of the middle-aged white dudes believing they can force themselves upon us without our consent ends soon and quick.

How much do you wanna bet that if those hostages had been Entebbe'd the fuck outta there, Jimmy wouldn't've been landslid to victory himself and we could have been saved from voodoo economics, James Watt, Ed Meese, IranContra, and all the massive shit we inherited from Ronnie?

I will resist the urge to forward this to Rick Wilson, who I'm sure is getting email-bombed today with this column. This is one of the MAJOR subjects of columns and essays he's been doing for the past few weeks. Phillips via Schmidt is dangerous in this election. Not only is he trying to run as a Democrat, but in any other election year that isn't an existential crisis, he might be someone to at least listen to. BUT NOT NOW! What in the actual FUCK is this guy thinking? And don't even get me started on Steve Schmidt, who preaches one thing, and looking back, all he's ever done is PREACH, and does another. If Schmidt needs the money, write a book, give paid speeches, shit, sell your ass on the street before you back a Democratic candidate for president in 2024 that's not Biden. "Oh, my, Biden's old. Biden's feeble. Biden is getting dementia. We need to pAsS tHe ToRcH!" Fuck that shit! Biden not only beat Trump like a big, fat, orange mule, but he's been one of the best presidents in my lifetime of 65 years, and there's actual FACTS to back that up! So, Dean Phillips can go fuck himself, and if he continues down this road, he can go fuck himself in 2028 and 2032 and beyond. He will always be remembered as the spoiler candidate back in 2024. He may not win or even place, but we'll be thinking of him like we think about Jill Stein now. And if the liar Steve Schmidt is SO WORRIED about democracy, why isn't he working for Biden? Because he's a liar and only cares about himself. An obvious Republican Trojan Horse is obvious.

And by the way, it struck me that if Trump is re-elected, scenes like the VERY satisfying crowd reaction at the Clemson game WILL NOT BE ALLOWED anymore. That may or may not be true at first, but always remember that Hitler didn't START with killing Jews.
