fun fact: first-draft headline was "does Donny even know what day it is" and now I can't get the tune out of my head. and neither can you. you're welcome

HI2thDoc's avatar

Read an article last year or so about Musk’s promised underground pod wonder he claimed would revolutionize Las Vegas. At the time, it was pretty much all hype and grandiose promises rather than any actual achievement. Just like he himself

it's hard to research if any state has actually bought into Elmo's fantasy because apparently there's at least one other company calling itself 'hyperloop' that has nothing to do with Elmo, I don't think

And reflect, if you will, a stone tube underneath the most earthquake-prone state in North America running 400 miles. It is a guaranteed collapse.

Dave Drell's avatar

The construction of this tube could possibly cause an earthquake.

Remember that big quake in the Bay Area back in the late 80s? I saw pics of land shifts of 6-8’.

Have you done a search on "Boring Company"? It's skuM's tunneling outfit.

HI2thDoc's avatar

Yeah, that’s what the Las Vegas article was about. The Boring Company promised an extensive and revolutionary transit solution that at the time of the writing was way behind schedule and had only a very limited segment actually built.

Robert Eckert's avatar

I answered an ad for a Boring Mill Operator. They asked me if I had any experience. I said "That was my whole last job, all day long, just boring, boring, boring. I've been boring for years. My mom says she even found me boring as a kid."

Read that the CA high speed rail project, while being over budget and behind schedule, is being eagerly watched by countries like Japan that have great high speed rail. Apparently, it’s very good.

TJTarheel's avatar

They started that over ten years ago. High speed rail in U. S. Yeah! Well no longer be behind every first world country in the transits department, after all should there be high speed rails criss crossing America already? Well better get to work but I know I won’t live to see it. You either drive or fly

Linda Weide's avatar

This ties in with USAID being gone because Musk has a grudge with South Africa, and they get USAID. I really want him deported back there, because they know what to do with Afrikaaners. Or we could deport him back to Canada. They are also not likely to be kindly disposed towards Musk, known as our Acting President, as apposed to Trump who is the "official" president.

Jeff Tiedrich's avatar

it also ties in with Marco Rubio refusing to go to the upcoming G20 meeting in South Africa, because we're now ruled by overgrown grievance-babies who want to hone their decades-old grudges

What?! Is he sending anyone? Some Secretary of State he turned out to be. I will now call him R, although I must say I never thought he would be a good one. I haven't looked this up, but were his parents immigrants? No birthright citizenship for him.

Unanimous consent on Rubio's confirmation. I have told my Senators what I thought of that vote - especially after his USAID lawlessness. Those same senators could do something about it, but they won't because he is a "dear colleague".

I live in Vegas and I wouldn't ride in that mess if you paid me. Wait till the first major earthquake hits Vegas. BTW, Nevada is the 3rd highest state in the US for earthquakes. Most are not felt, although I've felt 2 of them since I moved here. Here is a sample of an article about this:

"Meanwhile, Boring has skirted building, environmental and labor regulations, according to records obtained by ProPublica and City Cast Las Vegas under public records laws.

In June, a Clark County official documented water spilling onto a public street from a Boring Company worksite near the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The county issued a cease-and-desist letter. Credit:Clark County Public Works

It twice installed tunnels without permits to work on county property. State and local environmental regulators documented it dumping untreated water into storm drains and the sewer system. And, as local politicians were approving an extension of the system, Boring workers were filing complaints with the state Occupational Safety and Health Administration about “ankle-deep” water in the tunnels, muck spills and severe chemical burns. After an investigation, Nevada OSHA in 2023 fined the company more than $112,000. Boring disputed the regulators’ allegations and contested the violations.

The complaints have continued." This helps explain why he wants to get rid of OSHA. Never have seen anyone in my lifetime just do whatever he pleases, regardless of rules/laws. Disgusting. Can't believe that there's no one who can stop him.

Bonnie Council's avatar

He's not an engineer, civil or otherwise. Duh. He's just a rich mucky-muck who thinks his money will buy him whatever he wants, laws and regulations be damned. The faster we get him out of our politics and out of our country, the better. He's downright dangerous, in a whole lot of ways.

Cassandra Here's avatar

Robin's avatar

This! Earthquakes!

Deborah Hunter's avatar

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake shook Las Vegas and surrounding areas Friday morning, (2015) forcing loose a rubber casing on a bridge and leading state officials to close Spaghetti Bowl interchanges for several hours. That's not far from where the tunnel is to the Convention Center. And that's a pretty small earthquake. This tunnel idea is a Titanic disaster just waiting to happen.

Teri's avatar

Deborah, is the LV tunnel system planned on transporting 2028 Olympics fans & athletes to big stadiums and arenas to handle overflow of events from LA, the official city for 2028? A friend in LV told me of these vague plans six months ago. I thought the tunnels were finished and work was furiously underway to link them up with transportation to and from Olympics venues in LA.

Deborah Hunter's avatar

It just Googled it and 7 tunnels are finished. I'll be honest - I haven't paid much attention to it because I never have any intention of riding in one and I rarely go to the Strip. It says proposed link with LA so that could take quite awhile. There is a high speed above ground rail train being built between Vegas and LA. I think the ground's been broken and it's in the median of I-15 South. They are supposed to have 68 tunnels here in all. Wait till disaster strikes. Not only does our ground majorly flood with hardly any rain, there's the earthquake worry I talked about yesterday. I can see disaster written all over this scheme because of how our city is built, earthquake issue, flooding and the total moron behind all of this. I'll take Uber thank you.

Anne Whitney's avatar

Yes, same re California and the likelihood of disturbing a) farmland and b) the plates CA is gingerly set up on and would be better not to disturb. Tunneling in CA sounds stupid.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

It's the opening frames of every disaster-porn movie, greedy Millionaire builds inappropriate (whatever) against the advice of the experts, and skimps on construction causing said disaster.

I have a real concern about the integrity of any project he’s come up with on his own. Not only not viable, but certainly liable to explode with resulting death to many. The man is not brilliant.

Linda Weide's avatar

He still cannot get his driverless cars to stop driving. What he and Trump are doing is stirring up hate around the world. I though the Ayatollah had a 1 mil price on DTs head because I had read that in Spy Talk, but then I looked it up to check, and Al Jazeera said it is 3 mil. Perhaps it went up. Also, this was an Iranian MP, so if we add the money together it is 4 mil. Of course Musk can cough up the protection money by offering would be assassin more money not to kill him. But, I am betting the price went up since DT said that he was going to turn Gaza into the Middle East Mediterranean with luxury beach front properties and other countries have to take the Gazans. After all they could have left on day one, but instead they stayed during the war, because that was the whole point.

Deborah Hunter's avatar

There's always a gofundme. The money we would have give the worthless Dem Committee could go to this. I laugh at the comment that he's left instructions AFTER HE DIES. LOL LOL LOL. If this whole thing wasn't so literally deadly serious, it's hilarious and no one would could have made it up. There is no one, literally no one, who will miss this man when the Jesus bus comes.

Linda Weide's avatar

Poor Melania. She would have fewer grifting opportunities, although she is so set now that might not matter. I would be curious to see if she wore that same hat and outfit at Donald's funeral that she was wearing at his inauguration.

Rick Calegari's avatar

In the meantime, Rep. Al Green of Texas is filing new articles of impeachment against demented Donnie for his proposed takeover of Gaza. It's beyond believe that anyone in the Oval Office would even suggest such a barbaric and disastrous plan that would displace approximately two million Palestinians so he could attempt to further line his slimy pockets. With congressional Republicans still on board with cracker farm candidate Dump and his usual wacky bullshit, this isn't going to go anywhere. However, there are currently 23 lawsuits that have been filed against Elno Smuk and his bought and paid for felonious sidekick is up to 4,095 with more on the horizon.

Linda Weide's avatar

However, many are suggesting Donnie blurted out his son-in-laws Gaza plan without any support from his staff or Republicans, who are now walking it back, but it was probably a mainly a distraction from what Musk is doing, which it did not succeed in doing here. Perhaps in the rest of the world, which is now permanently angered at the US.

Derek Smith's avatar

Yes. He’s dangling a shiny object to distract our attention, and the legacy media is lapping it up

Bonnie Council's avatar

I've been thinking that - Musk does shit to distract us from what trump is doing, and trump says shit to distract us from what Musk is doing. I'd say we're being played.

Linda Weide's avatar

And I am worried about Musk shutting down both legacy and independent media ala Hungary.

Anne Whitney's avatar

Idk I heard this nonsense on the radio this am that Rubio was clarifying Palestinians are being rounded up and removed temporarily. Rounded up at all is of course the problem, any rounding up should not be happening but sounded like it is??? Can anyone fact check me please?

Linda Weide's avatar

Anne, which radio station did you hear that on? Here is the PBS discussion.

https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/watch-live-rubio-holds-news-briefing-with-dominican-president-luis-abinader

It sounds like Rubio is trying to twist the meaning of Trump's words, by pretending that what Trump said was only a plan to temporarily remove them. They had them living in tents, I assume people can live in tents while they rubble is being cleared and their homes rebuilt. Wonder if Trump intends the military to do the clean up work.

Teri's avatar

Linda, Tesla's are causing death, destruction and injuries too. In a NY or NJ tunnel, a Tesla's suddenly braked hard, causing a major pile up over a holiday weekend. Not the first report of this malfunction. So, no worries at Tesla, Elump has lots of time to play at being POTUS.

Linda Weide's avatar

So I have been reading about the dangers of Teslas for years. Years ago we made the decision that we would never support a Musk business because he has always been this odious. In fact, I talked a friend of mine here in Germany into getting rid of his. Now, Teslas are so unpopular he sold his and got a Chinese e-car. It would be bad for his business to drive one. I had been sending him Tesla recall emails every time I got them. Wishing Germany would shut his Tesla factory down. Then the German government could call for a boycott on Tesla just like Poland has.

Patrick Daniels aka Cromulent1's avatar

Arab nation is offering a huge bonus on the 2 for 1 after Trump’s idiotic comments Linda!!

Grace Kennedy's avatar

Wasn’t part of the horror the fact that they couldn’t leave Gaza? Only on the southern bridge when it was sometimes opened?

Can someone please explain what good it does to have a court-ordered DOJ agreement to restrain Musk's DOGE minions from messing with the Treasury records AFTER THE FACT? How about turning over all the info they obtained and reportedly stored on hard drives? How about restricting unvetted, non-federal incels from entering gov't buildings and SCIFS? How about a theft of private information, class action lawsuit?

Heather's avatar

Right? How about charge them with the crimes they clearly committed? If my federal employee husband did this, he’d go fuckity-bye, never to be seen or heard from again.

Dina's avatar

THIS!!! They've committed espionage, theft, stealing private information without consent...if it was literally ANYONE else, they'd already be sitting in jail, awaiting trial.

Outdoorluvr's avatar

Exactly. And no one has a clue what they're doing (or could be doing) with the information they stole. The republican investigative committee voted against calling Musk in for questioning, too. They don't care about their constituents or our Constitutional rights - only care that they won't get blamed, since it's just Musk running amuck.

Zija Pulp's avatar

Every GOP who’s OK with this thievery needs to sign a binding affidavit attesting that they will accept responsibility should what DOGE-boy and his jamboree are doing tuns out to be criminal. If they are willing to put their necks out for him, then go for it. If not, haul the motherfucker in.

Geoff Anderson's avatar

Yep, that data and information could have been exfiltrated to some data store outside the US by now.

Unless the military starts doing drone strikes, the cat is already out of the bag

Robert Eckert's avatar

Yeah, how about they are jailed and never allowed to see the sun again?

Karla's avatar

Exactly. This isn’t something that can be undone by the Courts. He has it and can’t un-have it. He’s been blocked from the Treasury Dept which is fine except he will just go do damage elsewhere. Why the hell isn’t Congress doing something? They aren’t even prioritizing his confirmation where they could just refuse to confirm him. They all need to go.

Outdoorluvr's avatar

He supposedly has clearance from Bissent, who (I think) was already confirmed by the Senate. Still, there remain security clearances, conflicts of interest with his gov't contracts, privacy invasion, and his hacker incels performing the duties. No one is stopping them from access to the other federal buildings and computer systems, either. They're just showing up and demanding entrance, and it sounds like fed employees are letting them in whenever they threaten to call the U.S. Marshalls! (my info came mostly from Heather Cox Richardson, all cited with references)

Zija Pulp's avatar

Why aren’t federal employees telling THEM that they have no standing and they’re going to call the U. S. Marshalls and the National Guard on them if they don’t piss off?

Outdoorluvr's avatar

That's what I'd like to know. I understand Bissent (Treasury Sec'y) cleared their access, but what about the other departments? They got personal permission slips from trump? Whose orders do the U.S. Marshals ultimate follow?

Marla's avatar

Impeach Scott Bessent.

Outdoorluvr's avatar

Also, Karla, Musk has been classified as a "special government employee" by trump. Like an appointed interim cabinet member, he doesn't require confirmation (trump trick to avoid scrutiny or delay). That said, he still has to comply with federal conflict-of-interest statutes (enforceable by the DOJ 🙄), and theoretically has to answer to congress.

Don't these fucking idiots know how this shit works ?

Outdoorluvr's avatar

Part of the problem with all the old pharts in our congress - they don't understand shit about computers, software, or IT. They know how to scroll on their cell phones and post B.S. on social media during legislative sessions, though! We'd be better off electing a bunch of 10-yr olds. 🫤

Fastball Fredo's avatar

Jeff, just spitballing here, but if you lay off the employees of the FBI and CIA, counter terrorism specialists.. how does this make our country any safer or just plain safe? Folks just go back in history and find out why bin Laden was so pissed about America, Americans soldiers in Muslim sacred lands. This is not rocket science for people who are able to think logically.. Best to All.

In his ketamine addled brain, Space Nazi must have watched the Jetsons as a kid. Maybe he can build a one way pneumatic tube to Mars & try to colonize it. Regarding the orange menace, my bar is so low that I’m actually grateful he yammered on about $2 aeroplane tickets without mentioning Hannibal Lechter or pet eating.

I wonder if Musk has read Ray Bradbury's novel "The Martian Chronicles"? The first few space flights to Mars don't turn out too well for the astronauts in his book. The Martians keep killing them! Eventually, though, we colonize the place, & of course we send up a bunch of Catholic priests to convert the Martians ( I am not making this up.) So the Martians immediately disappear into thin air.

There are people who didn't read "The Martian Chronicles" in high school? The ones who are younger than us?

Or Futurama as an adult

Yeah, that was a blessing. I kinda missed the Swollen Men with Huge Biceps and tears in their eyes. That is a perennial favorite.

Thank you Jeff I've been reading your commentary for years even when it was just little snippets on twitter. But yours is just about the only news I can handle the cost of the context you put it in. Thank you.

The orange idiot doesn't probably know where he's at Jeff, it's embarrassing to watch a malignant narsaccist try to dismantle our Nation. His oligarch buddies love the fact that his ineptitude has fostered their grand scheme to profit off of the sweat and toil of the Average Joe.

I've refused to use his name since his first Reign of Chaos, his handling of COVID is responsible for the loss of two people I dearly loved and I fear something similar will happen with the Bird Flu.

It is baffling that Kamala packed her speaking arrangements and had large crowds listening outside cheering her on. The orange idiot had to pay people through Craigslist and his attendance numbers were miniscule in comparison to Kamala's.

Every morning the first thing I do is check to see if he hopefully passed during the night. pElon bought himself a president and he's currently harvesting highly sensitive data to what end?

It's a scary time Jeff. Thank you for your dose's of wit and for NOT pretending like everything is alright, it isn't remotely close to being alright, unfortunately. The despicable Wolf is in the Nations hen house and the Dems make me feel like we have been abandoned. 💙✊🏼

There is a video on You Tube of a conversation between Thom Hartmann and Greg Palast that explains how the election was rigged with voter suppression. It’s worth the time to find it. It’s also on BlueSky on my timeline a few days down. Same handle as here.

I will never believe that it was an honest election. Do you remember the joy and attendance at all Kamala's appearances?

Highly worth the watch!

I renamed that man to Convicted Felon (CO47) because that is what he is!

I've been calling the buffoon, Commander Crazy Pants since his first reign of ineptitude. Hearing his voice is nauseating, what a hideous mess that's been created.

So many scum balls to choose from who, benefits the most from a moron being our president? We need to closely monitor his every move because with that loser in office, he can be bought with mere flattery. The consequences of his ineptitude are frightful.

Elonald are 2 morbidly rich grievance babies with more money and time on their hands than god. Instead of using all that$ money$ to help make peoples lives better who are not as fortunate as they are, they fuck up shit and spread pain and hatred to everything they touch.smfh

If they used money for good causes rather than hoarding it, they would be genuine heroes, but they’d rather be villains.

Honestly, even if I COULD buy a plane ticket for $2, I would not risk flying anywhere right now. They - the Mumps - have fired the head of the FAA and disbanded the TSA. The only way I'm flying is if Adam Kinsinger or Rick Wilson is the pilot.

my daughter, on a trip to South America, just rearranged her return flight, losing substantial $ doing do, to get back to Canada w.o. any landings&take-offs in US

Bring Sully out of retirement!

Yes, excuse me, but Sullenberger is the only pilot I believe.
