a Trump third party run? oh please please please please let this total fucking shitshow happen
bombshell: a new poll indicates that 28 percent of Republican primary voters say they’ll support Donald Trump even if he ran as an independent in 2024
I’ve previously written about how this is my dream scenario for 2024.
The Bulwark, a conservative publication, commissioned a poll and found that “a large majority of GOP voters is ready to move on from Donald Trump.” unsurprising, considering that every passing day sees Trump grow ever more deranged and ever more repellent.
oh but then there’s this, from the same poll:
one question I was keen to answer with this poll is how many “Always Trumpers” would follow Trump if he lost the GOP primary and launched an independent bid for president.
And according to our poll, that 28 percent of Republican primary voters already locked in for Trump say they’ll support him even if he ran as an independent in the general election.
recall that in 1992, Ross Perot siphoned off enough from Poppy Bush to prevent him from being reelected. and all it took was 18% of the vote. that’s all. 18%.
which raises the question: if he were denied the Republican nomination in 2024, would Trump form a third party?
OH FUCK YES HE WOULD. especially if Ron DeSantis got the nomination. right now Trump loathes DeSantis for his perceived disloyalty and nothing motivates Trump more than spite and revenge. (ok, except maybe money. but more on that in a bit.)
recall that Trump has already threatened to start a third party at least once before:
"I'm done," Trump said to McDaniel, according to the book. “I'm starting my own party.”
“You cannot do that,” McDaniel replied to Trump. "If you do, we will lose forever."
"Exactly. You lose forever without me," Trump shot back. "I don't care."
now back to the money angle. Jonathan V. Last, also writing in the Bulwark, notes:
But I do know that if Trump were to lose the Republican nominating contest, he could bring in a lot of money by running a third-party campaign.
And if the question is: “Trump could make a lot of money by doing X; will he do X?”
Well, then the answer is usually: Yes.
like the man said, “this going to be a disaster.”
a fucking disaster.
what a gift this will be to whomever is the Democratic nominee in ‘24 (my money’s on Joe Biden).
pass the fuck out of the popcorn
