Dispatch from one of the least stupid places in our stupid country, Portland, Oregon: Beautiful day. Common Cause has organized a peaceful protest for 3 pm today at Waterfront Park. The only antifa in view at the moment is me.

ICYMI: Nexstar put Kimmel back on. They and Sinclair did not see the light. They read the contract. They have one week to screw with the schedule, then ABC can say you don't want Kimmel? Fine, we'll pull Monday Night Football. Discussion over.

Another fun fact: The little girl prosecuting Comey first went to the wrong courtroom. She found the right one but stood on the wrong side of the judge. I almost feel sorry for her. She's going to be chewed up like my terrier's plush toy.

Here’s a thought for Portland. Pull a “ghost town” response. They’ve given enough time for folks to stock up on groceries etc to allow them to stay home. Let the troops march through empty streets, stores closed, only thing in operation hospitals, fire and police. Yes, income will be lost but maybe Portland can run a “go fund me” type campaign. Not one boarded up window or door. On my way there I passed lots of parents and small children coming from a performance at Keller Auditorium. Didn’t see or smell any fires or hear any sirens. Our streetcars are running normally. The news helicopters are annoying. Come visit. We have great fall colors."

He is gaslighting away from Epstein. He is hoping to incite violence to invoke martial law nationwide.

He is lying to you.

I recently predicted with the economy spiraling, with his popularity tanking, and with the impending release of the Epstein files in their entirety, he would do something really bad to gaslight away from it all. That something apparently is to deliberately place my family and neighbors - who have done nothing wrong - in danger - in order to evoke excuse to seize control of the country, before he loses power and to gaslight away from Epstein.

Hopefully, every trump-voting National Guardsman is activated at some point before the election, leaving their homes, jobs, and families to carry on without them, with all the consequences they'll face. Let's see how long their trump loyalty lasts.

Expand full comment
George in Atlanta's avatar

Deployment families deal with that all the time, it's part of the package.

No one has ever stopped supporting trump because of 'consequences'. All those do is dig them in deeper. Their children have already started dying of treatable and preventable diseases. Their farms and businesses have already started failing because of the Trump Economy trainwreck. And they won't blame him, they'll just believe that 'he just doesn't see it yet and he has incompetent stooges'.

Expand full comment
skangirl's avatar

You're right, but there is already data suggesting that people in the Guard are unhappy about being deployed in American cities to act against other citizens.

They didn't expect to be picking up trash and spreading mulch. They're not helping people recover from a natural disaster. And, for better or worse, they aren't being deployed overseas as "real" soldiers. (Deploying the Guard overseas was unthinkable before our post 9/11 wars. When I was growing up, it was the place to hide from being sent to Vietnam. Even Kent State didn't change that.)

They can't be happy about the way their deployments are timed to deprive them of benefits they had every right to expect. Scheduling deployments so they are just a day shy of those benefits is blatantly cruel; it won't escape notice, especially when the economic consequences deprive their families of security.

Hardcore MAGA will figure out how to blame Biden or Obama or MLK, for that matter. They're a lost cause. But ill douché can't afford to lose *any* supporters. It's just a race to see if alienating his base will be delayed long enough to turn them off at the voting booth. (Fingers crossed.)

And then another $14 million for his weekly golf trip to one of his bed bug infested motels.

During Vietnam my brother got his letter and when he went for his physical he was classified 4-F because of a childhood accident where lost a finger, turns out, his trigger finger (how my mother cried when he came back from his physical and my Dad, who was a proud vet who enlisted at 20 and trained for two years, was a navigator in WWII based in England and survived 35 missions, he cried too) but several of my brother's friends enlisted in the National Guard instead. I think of them when I read these stories and these guys are close to 80 now.

My family from DC came here a few weeks ago, and they had to go to Union Station to take the train. My cousin who is the sweetest went up to a couple of the NG who looked so miserable picking up garbage, standing around, and probably knowing so many people looked at them with scorn and she said " thank you. I know you don't want to be here doing this and smiled at them" and they smiled and thanked her because no, they don't want to be there. I have no doubt there are those who are "all in" but I don't think as many as we think. They get their orders and have to go, but spitting at them is only going to enrage them, especially the ones who are "all in" with itchy trigger fingers. I remember Kent State like it was yesterday. I wonder if anyone ever interviewed the ones that killed the 4 kids and injured how many others, especially since they must have been close in age to the students.
