look, I hear what you're all saying about Comey, and I have slightly rewritten the following passage, from

"I detest this guy for what he did to the email lady in 2016 — but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t all stand with Comey when he’s the victim of fucked-up fascism on steroids."

to

"I detest this guy for what he did to the email lady in 2016. James Comey is not our friend — but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t all stand with Comey when he’s the victim of fucked-up fascism on steroids. let Comey find his comeuppance in a way that doesn’t shred our system of justice."

He had previously said his wife and daughters voted for Hillary in 2016, so I assume they have never let him forget how his actions not only torpedoed her but led to this. At least I hope they have. Repeatedly.

IIRC, Comey got caught between a rock and a hard place. He could disclose the new findings, or be accused later of concealing it. It was a no-win situation for him.

No, it wasn't. The FBI has repeatedly said they don't talk about ongoing investigations. Comey shattered protocol and put Trump in the White House over something that just days after he revealed it turned out to be nothing. But it was too late. The NY Times had already run dozens of front-page stories, driving national coverage so that going into Election Day, the only "issue" anyone was talking about was "her emails." He could have just gone what the FBI always did—nothing.

Methinks just a WEE spot of, ahem, 'sarcasm' here, Dave? ;) For MY part, I distinctly remember being SO PISSED at him, using a lot of WTF'S but also then being SO pleased that Hillary STILL WON the popular vote (even though WE lost her from the WH) but which has stuck like a thorn in frump's side ever since. Of course his magats refuse to accept that We The People chose her to this day. I honestly don't believe hComey truly meant what happened to happen - just blundered into doing what he thought was 'the right thing' out of a sense of duty, although now seeing what Anastasia and kd have written causes some confusion as his behaviour since (and that of Maureen) has more than proven they're not in league with the orange moron.

Could he POSSIBLY know that frump WOULD become this much of a 'major threat to our democracy? Even I who grew up knowing what a fuckwit he always was couldn't see THAT coming... OR is it even just a TINY BIT POSSIBLE that he believed the voting populace would go ahead and vote as they'd already planned to and his belief in 'doing the right thing' wouldn't do any harm whatsoever? I've already written that I was mightily pissed AT the time but when Hillary STILL won the popular vote it proved to ME that sufficient people were NOT spooked by her 'emails'. Has everyone fucking forgotten 'Russia, if you're listening. blabbity, blah, blah'? SINCE then I've rethought thoroughly - my anger towards him, and the very LAST THING I'd do is bring his deliberately fired Prosecutor DAUGHTER into this anymore than she's been DRAGGED - let alone dictating how she should love her father! When we interact it fucks with their algorithms - same as on twitter (I refuse to call it 'x'), even though musk himself actually follows me. Is it to intimidate or did he really 'like' some of what I wrote? Who knows. I don't soft pedal anything there. Perhaps in some perverse way he enjoys seeing women describe the orange shitler for exactly the racist pig he is. I am ANTIFA. An anti fascist like my father who fought against fascism fro 1939 to 1985. First as an agent in the British (multinational) SOE (Strategic Operations Executive, the forerunner to so many Western Secret services...including the CIA), then in the Canadian Forces Intelligence Services until 1948, then in the Canadian Secret Service and Foreign Service until 1985. My Grandfather fought against the Bolsheviks (1919-1922) and fled to Canada (Thank you Opa and Oma!). And millions of other men and women of what were the Allied forces in 1939 through 1945 and then NATO forces. All of those heroes have been designated, post Mortem as Terrorists by the Trumphole (Who is a coward). There is much more than 'shame' in that. And, I am not ashamed in the least, bring em on!

Expand full comment
displacedCTYankee's avatar

"Possible guilt?" Comey tanked Hilary's election, plain and simple. I can't believe the both-sidesing here by too many people.

Expand full comment
George in Atlanta's avatar

So that's what tanked her election? Oh, 'plain and simple'; that ends any argument.

I both-sides nothing. Her Ladyship was next in rotation so they put her on the stage. That was our foretaste of how fucked up the Dems were. The country didn't want her, least of all the racist, misogynistic rubes who now rule it. The country wanted Trump. The country got Trump. I sort of doubt that anything the Dems did one way or the other would have mattered.

I voted for her because I had no other choice. But here's the thing, citizens: that whole 'choice' thing is coming full circle. The Dems hardly exist anymore. There's the reeking mass with the name GOP, and then there's the Opposition. The opposition is messy, unstructured, and has no leadership. Yet. It's not like this thing is at all ambiguous, and most (not all) of our talking heads are catching up with this fact. Trump wants a totalitarian police state because that's what he wants. The way he acts, it appears to be personal. He's a frightened little weasel, lashing out at forces he barely understands. His remarkable setting up of this, right in front of God and Country, by berating Bondi indicates to me there is no larger goal here. He just wants to be safe, so feels he can't stop, because the whole planet hates his guts (except for a handful of dictators who find him useful and 77M mentally-challenged rubes).

So the choice? Fight. Or not. Comey's treatment of the "Server Lady" is not what Trump is persecuting him for. His guilt in that matter, and in any sense, is irrelevant.

Expand full comment
Elizabeth Schulz's avatar

George: did you forget she beat him by nearly THREE MILLION MORE popular votes? To me, that indicates that a HELLUVA lot more of We The People wanted HER over the conman grifter. Murdoch, Pecker (he of the fake-ass stories ginned up in his National Enquirer JUST FOR frump) to make it seem she was A) a pedophile (my, how the worm has turned) B) dying Oops! C) suffering from a non-functioning brain Ta-DA! - all played a part, BUT she still got more of 'the people's' votes! If anyone should be held criminally liable, it should be Murdoch and Pecker, along with always-cheating frump and nosferatu/miller.

Expand full comment
George in Atlanta's avatar

No, I didn't forget that. It was an interesting number that was ultimately irrelevant. That's because the structure has been in place since 1787 to ensure that low-population rural states had an outsized influence on the elections. It was a compromise, because there was clearly an opposition to it that understood that the results of listening too closely to the poorly-educated could produce poor results. As it has. Trump rode this imbalance to victory. He's the one now sitting in the Oval Office.

All of the other points you make are, while true, also irrelevant. Are he and all his minions corrupt, immoral, amoral, and evil? Sure they are. And we're talking about them because they won.

The point I've tried to make is that, somewhere along the way, this whole fight became asymmetrical. The only question remaining for me is whether or not there is still a fight at all. If everybody just keeps going to work like there's nothing to see, then no. And if no, then all the grousing we do about Hillary's loss, Trump's corruption, or how compromised the Supreme Court is will amount to nothing.

That, of course, put his thumb on the scale big time. What was his motivation? I cannot say, although he was or is a registered Repub. I am so conflicted because I loathe Comey. He's an arrogant misogynist who let his bias against women in power hand the election to Trump the first time around. Notably, he was the lead prosecutor in the case that sent Martha Stewart to prison. He was searching for a high profile prosecution and salivated at taking down an incredibly rich and powerful woman. He sucks in the worst ways possible. That said, Trump is a far greater enemy and this needs to stop. I know someone is cataloging all of these tweets that will eventually be used against the current administration. Dreaming about the Pam Bondi perp walk now....

I think Martha Stewart did commit insider trading. That being said, there have been many many worse and more blatant cases since then, especially since Mr. Tariffs Are Good for America has created so many opportunities for MAGAts to profit from his wildly inconsistent and stupid reversals, pauses, and reinstatements. If Martha went to the pokey, all of these others should too, and for longer.
