Woodlawn. Class of 1978

I was lucky enough to be there in the 1970s a time one of my all time favorite teachers describes as the “glory days”.

As Ms. Goree said there was a brief glimpse of what could have been.

Brave lady. Didn’t know it at the time but she marched w/Dr. King.

California has a fair commission (three Democrats, three Republicans, and three independents who have been registered as independents for at least 10 consecutive years) that is elected by voters to create districts every 10 years for the state. It has worked very well for 20 years. The legislature or courts cannot change it. It can only be changed by another initiative. I don't understand why Gavin is doing this, since the current commission does not gerrymander. I guess I'll find out more later, but until then, I will just support him for president.

Expand full comment
Sarah's avatar

Gavin is putting this forward as a method to fight back against the corrupt MAGATS doing anything they can to grab and keep power in their hands. His point is that allowing them to get away with this shit and continuing to keep to the straight and narrow ISN”T WORKING. The state of California has its own power to STOP their destruction of our democracy. What capacity do we actually have to intervene? This is his suggestion.

Expand full comment
longtimebirdwatcher's avatar

I understand, but we control the magas in our state. The red counties and percentage of the population in California is lower than it used to be, especially since San Diego switched from red to blue. A lot of magas whined that California is too expensive, but if illegals can make it here, anyone can. California provides MediCal to everyone who needs it, so it's not like medical care is too expensive (if your income is minimal, it's $1 a month.) And in the Bay Area, the weather is great. This initiative was written by a public interest group, and unless Gavin's proposal is supported by them, I don't support it at this time.

There is no clout—nor are there clicks to be had—from listening to Democrats. Additionally, Murc's Law says that only Democrats may face accountability, so covering the pricktator's gibbering accurately is a violation.

Let us also not forget, these media owners want those juicy, juicy Republican tax cuts and regulatory capture to allow their mergers for $$$$. You cannot get that unless you fete the pricktator and show that the mad godking emperor has no clothes.
