Paul Krugman says oil in Venezuela not worth the cost.

https://open.substack.com/pub/paulkrugman/p/the-emperors-new-oil-wealth?utm_campaign=post-expanded-share&utm_medium=web

Zev Shalev tells us that we will be paying for the oil in Venezuela 2 times, first to set and haul and it, then to use it. In fact, he says we will be bailing bankrupt Venezuela out. Isn't that what we did with Argentina?

https://open.substack.com/pub/narativ/p/new-analysis-the-venezuela-con-trumps?utm_campaign=post-expanded-share&utm_medium=web

Soon, we will have bailed all economically failing states in Latin America and we won't have any money left. Who will pay Trump's big, strong military then? The oil billionaires and the tech billionaires, who will turn them against us as they create their little private countries founded by Curtis Yarvin desciples, that we will be forced to live in as serfs. https://www.techpolicy.press/trumps-gaza-fantasy-and-the-network-state-the-tech-fueled-future-of-privatized-sovereignty/

It doesn't get much more dystopian than that. However, after having read John Christopher's "The City of Gold and Lead" in middle school. I know I don't want to live in a mind controlling, life controlling state. We better get the vote out big for the midterms.

Why should we discuss Jan 6? The topic has been beaten and shredded and has to be set aside for now. We need not keep rehashing the past. Our present is overflowing with crises and the future is fuzzy.

Why do we keep assuming that we will have anything approximating free and fair elections? How does that happen in our current state of lawlessness and desecration of our Constitution?

Let’s focus on Nov 2026 … more critical than Jan 6. I am absolving you of any molecule of guilt around your wise decision to not get into Jan 6! You are an inspiring writer and observer of our state of being

Hey, you know what other “topic” has been “beaten and shredded” and which some suggest should be “set aside for now”? The Epstein files. Maybe we should not keep rehashing that part of “the past”?

“Why should we discuss Jan 6?”

Gosh, I dunno. Maybe because the 5th anniversary of the Insurrection, the worst day in recent American history, is worth a mention or two? That the national trauma of Jan6 continues to this day? That it’d be worthwhile and relevant to see how the MAGAts are busily trying to rewrite Jan6 history, and how important it is to push back against their lies and keep the correct narrative in place? Just off the top of my head, and I’d better stop now.

The Jan. 6 insurrectionists behaved literally like rabid shitgibbons, not patriots. Like meth-fueled animals, they gleefully smeared their excrement on the walls of the Capitol and desks of representatives. They brought a noose to lynch the VP. They maimed and killed police officers. Was January 6th "the worst day in recent American history"?

It was until January 6th.

But since then, we've had so many horrific days, I'm afraid Jan.6th just seems -pale.

How about " Jan 4th Invading Venezuela"?

Or maybe in a few days: "Jan 7th - Hijacking a Russian boat and consequently starting WWIII"? That would seem like "worst day" to me.

Expand full comment
Nancy Potter's avatar

1/6/21 was the worst day because insurrectionists sent by the sitting president tried to stop the transfer of power following an election and were ready to kill congressmembers and even the Vice President to get their way. The Jan 4 invading Venezuela unfortunately follows a tradition in this country of invading Latin American countries that goes back over 100 years.

Whenever I hear the usual blatant lies by Trump and republicans, every day, every hour, every minute, I sometimes find myself seething in anger about every “fact check” aimed at Democrats by the NY Times, CNN, Washington Post, etc. Horrendous both sides bullshit, and as Trump sends this country closer to the cliff they’re still doing it. One can only hope that all of this is SO bad that even these republican controlled media machines won’t be able to sane wash it.

I found out yesterday that the Capitol Police escalated all of the violence--I guess by spraying bear mace in their own faces and conking themselves over the head with flagpoles. And the Democrat [sic] party arranged all of it, and I think I remember that part when Speaker Pelosi climbed up the side of the Capitol in her stilettos while she waved a Trump flag.

Except I also learned there wasn't any violence, because it was all just a bunch of happy tourists, plus it was the Democrat [sic] party that didn't do anything to stop the tourists.

It made me almost as mad as when those fuckers were waltzing around the Capital waving the Confederate flag. WTAF??? If you go to PBS.org/newshour you can watch clips from last night. 🤬

I just want to note that the white house has put out a new web page devoted to blaming the Democrats for January 6. It is absolutely nauseating and pays homage to the "brave patriots", i.e. the convicted rioters trump pardoned as well as memorializing the MAGAts that died that day and in following days. The page also implied that the Capitol Police were responsible. After seeing it, I immediately called my republican house representative to express my disgust and outrage and ask that he take steps to get it taken down. The staffer whined about Barrett not being responsible for the page. I said he could certainly ask the white house to take it down although I expected he didn't have the balls to do so. trump can't die soon enough.

Thank you Jeff.

It's another reminder that apparently, the GOP has no "Red Line" anymore. It's all about concentrating wealth and power to perpetuate billionaire rule.

Shameless plug and excerpt from "The Disappearing Thin Red Line" (https://bomdia.substack.com/p/the-disappearing-thin-red-line)

As Trump and his Cabinet ignore court orders, defy the Constitution (with the support of the Roberts Court), betray our allies, implement the deeply unpopular Project 2025, and govern without constraint, coupled with the continuing release of an undeniable trove of evidence that Trump was deeply involved with Epstein and Maxwell in the abuse of children, how long will Republican Party Members remain silent or worse, obstructive? When Trump had a solid base of Trump/MAGA support, i.e. “I could shoot someone on 5th Avenue”-style unwavering support, it was politically expedient to tap into Trump/MAGA base to be elected or reelected. As Trump and the GOP cause millions of Americans to lose access to what was barely affordable healthcare under the Affordable Care Act, will this be the red line that exposes MAGA for just the rebranded con it represents?

MAGA is just a rebrand of the long running con game run by the wealthiest Americans (and non-Americans) through the Republican Party. The so-called Silent Majority, the Reagan Revolution, the Moral Majority, the Tea Party, and now MAGA all share the same basic tenets:

Divide voters over emotional issues: Abortion, Public Safety, Guns, Religion, Race, Immigration, Climate, Taxes, etc.

Concentrate wealth to the top through tax cuts, privatization, and deregulation.

Repeat as necessary.

Every time the voters begin to understand the long con, the con is rebranded.
