public service announcement: I just updated the post because I FORGOT TO MENTION THAT DONNY FELL ASLEEP RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FIGHT!

what the fuck is wrong with me

Margaret MacKenzie's avatar

And we’re surprised? It wouldn’t be a televised spectacle without Sir Snoorzealot.

Linda Weide's avatar

Of course. I am tired today and took a nap because I was up late watching the Rise Up and Sing Out performance last night. Since I am on CEST, it started at 2 am for me, and Patti Smith sang at 3:33 am. I thought that was cool! The People Have the Power. Let us show Trump at the midterms.

Also, Indivisible Abroad is supporting Boycott the US World Cup 2026. I have it posted to my IA group's Mastodon site each day. https://norden.social/@indivisiblebremen

Laurie's avatar

I didn't know about the rise up and sing out performance. I love Patti Smith! Is there someplace I can see that? I only have Netflix on YouTube and antenna TV. Thank you!

Linda Weide's avatar

Yes Laurie. Here is the video of it.

https://www.youtube.com/live/Uxap5XA61ng?si=Q4yllYQODLcPw8WL

I love Patti Smith too, and was sad I missed her in my home town Chicago. I am so glad she is continuing in her career by creating new music and performing. The People Have the Power!

Annette's avatar

there are so many things that happened at the testosterone-fest last night, its hard to remember everything - we forgive you (but heartfelt thanks for the special mention of Hokit; he's a CTE diagnosis waiting to happen, and I couldn't be happier - I know that's not nice or proper to think that way, but his kind of "special" deserves it)

Joyce's avatar

Well, after I read not only his comment about Michelle Obama, but a few of his other remarks, my conclusion was A. stereotypical Donnie Demento supporter and B. we will probably be getting a breaking news report on his more-or-less accidental overdose in the not too distant future. The guy's clearly tanked on steroids, plus god only knows what recreational drugs; financial advisors usually tell you to plan to live into your 90s.....I'd say he can spend it all now.

Terry's avatar

Why doesn't Michelle Obama sue the ever-loving shit out of that guy? Talk about defamation and slander. Wtf is wrong with those people.

rlritt's avatar

Because Michele Obama is so far above Hokit that acknowledging him and his comment is like noticing a bothersome mosquito in your yard..

Terry's avatar

Doesn't matter. They need stopped once and for all. That stupidity has been going on long enough.

Annette's avatar

Because when they go low, she goes high . . . and another favorite quote: "Consider the source."

Terry's avatar

So keep being slandered and defamed. No. She said during Kamala's campaign she no longer felt that way. Keep up, please!

Look up:

Politico 08/21/2024

Michelle Obama abandons her own plea to ‘go high’

"Michelle Obama first spoke her now-famous aphorism eight years ago when Democrats gathered in Philadelphia: “When they go low, we go high.”

Tonight, there was no going high. Instead, she accused former President Donald Trump of “going small.” "

The article continues with her speech, which was absolutely brilliant!

Elizabeth Schulz's avatar

Been missing some posts for a couple of days...hubby had yet another toe amputated a couple of days ago and is moping, so I'm having to take care of everything (which is tough with my own physical issues, but we do what we must). I'm just wiped out exhausted though - and haven't caught up with everything. Just read your post about 'catching up' with this more recent post of Michelle Obama's. Frankly, that is entirely new to me as well. I had NO idea she'd said such a thing...and so many others I know still believe she felt 'going high when they go low' was 'the' best way to go. I've read her books and saw no mention there either. Anyway - in her and Barack's wonderful speeches opening his Presidential Center in time for Juneteenth (it took a decade to build and complete!) I managed to catch the replay of the 2-hour show on MSNow tonight - wow! What a brilliant concept, wonderful speeches and just an entirely fantastic concept all around - it's on the South Side of Chicago where Michelle grew up. They were both interviewed with plenty of time to talk - about her childhood there - I loved the photos of her as a little girl then into her young adulthood (which I've seen before) AND then into her Law School days on into her work at her law firm, being assigned to mentor this new young Associate (my law firm had a similar system). That's how she met Barack - beginning as co-workers, then friends - then 'the rest of the story'. She made a point of talking about her deep love and during her speech TO him gave him such accolades - mostly for the kind of human being he is, as he surreptitiously wiped away tears, clearly not expecting her words. Gawd, she's fucking amazing, as is he. I SO wish she wouldn't rule out a Presidential run - BUT she's been put through such horrid crap by frump's thugs I wouldn't wish it on her. IF they rerun the 2 hours showing the entire Campus/museum/complete replication of the Oval Office as it was during his Presidency - it's a must see. They've added a basketball court, a play area for the kiddos, a restaurant, digitized all the photos Pete Souza took AND digitized all of what would normally end up in files in a regular library BUT also incorporated a brand new branch of the Chicago Library. The place is stunning... calm, while being warm and welcoming- and I so wish I could go there to spend a couple of days just looking at it all. Even on video it gave such a feeling of peace and hope. We CAN do it again, if we care enough.

Elizabeth Schulz's avatar

Hmm -- I'm wondering IF those of us who love her can file a class-action suit against those who defame her? YES, they have 'free-dumb of speech' but NOT 'hate' speech, which this assuredly is and always was - by frump and his magats, deliberately against the first black President and his First Lady. We've put up with far too much of their crap - why NOT do something like this, especially since it's what drives frump madder the most? He doesn't care if we fire back at his cabinet 'choices' but he sure DOES get twisted about his name coming off the Kennedy Center and now algae growing in the reflecting pool which was going to have his dumbass name affixed there as well. Think he'll still do that? It's these 'thousand cuts' which matter the most to demento - as they would to any other tantrum-throwing 4yr old!

Terry's avatar

I honestly don't know if We The People can sue on behalf of Michelle Obama. I'm thinking no, but I don't know that for sure.

trump was going to rename the Lincoln reflecting pool? I heard him say he wanted to build a "promenade" to connect the Lincoln Memorial to the Potomac River, and that "some" people said it should be named after him. Some people? Who? Himself in a dream?

Elizabeth Schulz's avatar

YES! Every time this idiot talks about 'some' or 'many' people - he's referring to the voices in his head, lol. NO ONE gives a flying fuck about naming things after him - except him. He's the only one who ever wanted to stick his stupid fake name on anything. If we insisted that it be 'drumpf' and not 'trump', think he'd still keep insisting? Not on a bet.

Eskaveeda's avatar

Old Spice, Hai Karate, Brut and English Leather come to mind! I’m sure the adverts are on YouTube. I do recall that the Hai Karate user had to ‘fight off the women’ in the commercials—now of course, he relishes in verbal abuse if they challenge his inanity and he’s a chauvinistic prick, and no doubt always has been. English Leather would also work since he fancies himself as a suave British toff. Also, he’s old and the spice is more like the corpse flower scent (guessing—never smelled the flower). And of course, just an all-round brute (it was pronounced like that, but it still holds because it’s French for gross, which is also French for FAT, but in this sense, it’s in the modern English language sense). Maybe he stockpiled all of them BITD 🤢

Bonnie Council's avatar

I love both your & Mr Reich’s explanation of why we are at this depressing place in American history. It truly does feel like an exercise in futility trying to understand how we got here. Sometimes it feels as if the term “cage match” is going to bring us in a straight line to the Bestiarii “fights” as in Ancient Rome. 😣

Susanna J. Sturgis's avatar

Since I came of political age in the late 1960s, I don't need *anyone's* explanation of how we got here because I've watched it happen in real time and even done my bit to help arrest it. If I start screaming at people who didn't catch on till Trump was elected *the first time*, I'll never stop.

Denise Donaldson's avatar

BRAVO, Susanna! Spot on! To anyone over 60, it's perfectly obvious how we got here. It started with Vietnam, then Nixon's pardon, continued with Raygun's cheating to win the 1980 election, through Iran-Contra, NAFTA and the repeal of Glass-Steagall, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the 2008 crash, and here we are.

Susanna J. Sturgis's avatar

Not to forget Reagan's major 1980 campaign speech in Philadelphia, MS, close to where the bodies of civil rights workers James Chaney, Michael Schwerner, and Andrew Goodman were found in 1964. The speech, need I say, was on states' rights. The civil rights piece is important: the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts of the mid-1960s drove all those white Southern Democrats to become Republicans. Without all those white votes, the Reagan administration wouldn't have been able to implement those pro-business policies that basically screwed so many of those Republican voters -- who kept voting Republican anyway.

Denise Donaldson's avatar

Another excellent point, Susanna. We have Raygun to thank directly for the corporatocracy. Aided later by Clinton, of course, but Ronnie was instrumental.

Susanna J. Sturgis's avatar

I've been known to say that Bill Clinton is the only Republican I ever voted for. ;-) Aided by Clinton for sure, and also by the Bush/Cheney (or Cheney/Bush) administration. Among other things, it gave us the Patriot Act and appointed Roberts and Alito to SCOTUS. The Citizens United decision came down in 2010. It was 5–4, and all of the 5 were Republican appointees. I believe that decision, basically unleashing corporate $$$ in political campaigns, was a major factor -- maybe THE major factor -- in Trump's 2016 election.

Nancie's avatar

Speaking of ill-health, be sure to check out the extreme sane washing that the NYT served up in the print edition today and days earlier online.

https://www.nytimes.com/2026/06/14/us/politics/trump-age-birthday-80.html

Here's the interesting part.

The headline in the print edition reads: "AS TRUMP TURNS 80, SCRUTINY OF HIS HEALTH IS HARD TO AVOID"

And here is the online headline: "TRUMP AT 80: A PRESIDENT 'REALLY UNCOMFORTABLE' WITH AGING"

Anyone notice a difference in tone and messaging between these two headlines??

Susanna J. Sturgis's avatar

In a word: WOW. I gave up on the NYT after the 2016 election, and they've done nothing since to make me regret my decision.

A most grotesque celebration by white trash and the decline of America.

Gloria J. Maloney's avatar

I know what you mean, but I know people you may consider to be white trash who are hard working, decent people and a thousand times better than the Trump family.

HI2thDoc's avatar

Hard working, decent people are not trash, though they may struggle economically. What makes him and his crime family trash are their insatiable greed, corruption, heedless and clueless arrogance, cruelty, and unashamed narcissism. Doesn't matter if they live in mansions and defecate in golden commodes. Their character, or lack thereof, is what distinguishes them as the pieces of shit that they are.

michellefromchicago's avatar

As my grandmother used to say, “the only thing worse than white trash is white trash with money.”

Mike Hammer's avatar

You can’t buy class. Donnie is case in point.

Tish Grier's avatar

EVERYTHING YOU SAID! "White trash" isn't about being poor inasmuch as it is about being what you said. I understood this when I was young and my Black friend Patty's parents called not me but my family white trash. It was my parents racism that shined through and tarred me. It wasn't me. They wanted to protect their daughter from my parents. The racism and misogyny of white trash was once a way for poor whites to be like rich whites and curry their favor. But that isn't the case now. Now we recognize that even wealthy people are white trash -- that includes Musk and Zuckerberg and the Elisons and Bezos. They can walk around with all the expensive gee-gaws they want but deep down they are most at home chewing tobacco, spitting it on their front laws and cursing "n...s" and immigrants and women just like Billy Bo Bob and Cleatus who work at the factory. It's character that makes someone white trash, not economics.

Mike Hammer's avatar

It’s not a socioeconomic issue as much as it is an emotional one. Many scholars point out that fascism in not just subjugation and violence as much as it is a state of mind, the looming threat.

BigDaddy52's avatar

Even if we may be poorly educated and misinformed. It's heartbreaking that we can be repeatedly fooled so easily.

Which is exactly what was celebrated last night. They call it white supremacy and will violently attempt to deny our first amendment rights with their second amendment rights. That’s what it represented in a more “acceptable manner” than white robes and swastikas. But they’re working on that.

Tish Grier's avatar

Good point, and you are right. It was a celebration of what they believe is white supremacy. What I find different about this from past celebrations of white supremacy is the numbers of people calling it out as stupid and men with little 🍄s. No one said that back in the day. I think there is less support for it now than there was, say 100 yrs ago when the KKK openly marched down Pennsylvania Ave. Although I wonder some days and hope I'm right.

Chris Hierholzer's avatar

Mike Hammer's avatar

I make the distinction between white trash and poor white trash, the latter being those who as you say, is derogatory and are doing their best. Yesterday was a celebration of the former. They call it white supremacy. We can separate the noble poor from the lazy, disgusting and undisciplined middle class.

If it’s too politically incorrect maybe call it White Blight.

Joanne Beck's avatar

Nancy Braus's avatar

There has to be a better term than 'white trash' for 'people' like the trump family, JD Vance, and all their racist buddies- somehow to isolate those with heaps of money and no taste- like those paying upwards of $100,000- for big lips and the rest. My partner calls them 'confederates' but that does not feel derogatory enough.

Cyndi's avatar

Epstein Class.

Or just Fascists.

Judy McNichols's avatar

Senator Ossoff (D., GA) referred to them as the Epstein Class and the Mar-a-largo Mafia..... As much as I like his descriptions, Fascists is a more accurate label for them.

Nancy Braus's avatar

Mar-a-Lago mafia might be the best we have come up with so far- fascism is at the core, but it would be great to have one term to refer to the fact that these wealthy (mainly) men are just so publicly low-brow- eating and even serving junk food from McDonalds, the gaudy style and loose spending of our money on trashy , gold coated everything- one smart writer referred to Donald’s source for his flash stuff as ‘Home Despot,” which really fits the bill. And the plastic surgery! Look at Lauren Sanchez, Bezos’ wife, or the odious Kimberly Gilfoyle- is this even mafia taste, or gone beyond?

Denise Donaldson's avatar

"Nouveau riche" used to cover it, but that doesn't include the fascist part. Neither does "vulgarians."

JD Vance -- or whatever is name is this week -- claims that gas prices will be coming down thanks to the "peace deal" that isn't. When they don't, how much longer will people give low IQ Trump a pass for Trumpflation?

serenity's avatar

Gas prices by me are already going down and have been for a week. A perverse part of me wanted them to stay high to maximize the pain so that people stayed angry. If they start going down the base is going to see that as "trump fixed the economy!" while forgetting that he was the idiot responsible for starting this war in the first place. Plus tariffs and everything else.

Daniel M Kimmel's avatar

Still above $4/gallon in Massachusetts. They were under $3 before his illegal war started. And when this "deal" is exposed as phoney as the 39 others, they'll go up again.

arne link's avatar

Prices near me are going down, too. Why?

Denise Donaldson's avatar

Food prices and utility rates will never go back down. They didn't after the pandemic, even though the problems that had supposedly sent prices spiraling had been eliminated.

BigDaddy52's avatar

With trumpist oligarchs controlling media, AI spewing fraud and misinformation, we are in for a long slog.

Nightmares end....they dont continue on day in and day out. This might be the longest night terror that's ever been had....just the pure raw feeling of absolute fear and terror.

Suel J's avatar

Yes it is. I now have to quell fear off and on every day. I keep it quiet.

HI2thDoc's avatar

A parody though he may have been, President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho was much smarter, classier, more honest, and beneficent than our current parody in the WH. Also,

President Camacho didn't conspire with a prolific pedophilic sex trafficker.

Well, that public display of dumbfuckery wasn’t popular at least with the majority of Americans.

So I will applaud them for their own hubris continuing to fracture even their own kool aid drunk MAGA base.

Polling shows that only 16% approved of the circus erected on the south lawn.

So while the bread and circuses quote about the fall of the Roman Empire isn’t a “repeat” of history it sure as fuck rhymes.

Wendy The Druid 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈🌈's avatar

I had heard that polling said it was 12% of america favored....honestly anything under 20% is believable.

Unity In Defiance's avatar

Yet Obama had the audacity to wear that tan suit… 🙄

Suel J's avatar

He looked fine too.

HI2thDoc's avatar

And had the audacity to be rational and compassionate. Imagine that

arne link's avatar

That's the Mamdani playbook, too. I hope more mayors are able to replicate his hopeful, helpful vision. I also hope that he doesn't break our hearts...

counterlife's avatar

That was the cause of the outrage. Envy. He looked so fine.

Daniel M Kimmel's avatar

I never understood what that was about.

Margaret MacKenzie's avatar

I’d watch Idiocracy again but it would seem like too much of a documentary.

Daniel M Kimmel's avatar

Try watching "Network" now. In 1976 it was an over the top satire. Today it's all too real.

Irascible Ink's avatar

I'd be wishing we were so lucky. 🙄

AND HE WAS BRILLIANT!!!!

MORE THAN THEY COULD TAKE!

arne link's avatar

They probably all thought that their wives and mistresses were lusting after him in their hearts. He had an easy charm about him.

Denise Donaldson's avatar

I wasn't a fan of his presidency, but he certainly set the standard for personality and behavior. Charming, ARTICULATE, intelligent, knowledgeable, calm, collected, had a sense of humor, propriety, and humility. He rose to the moment when called to do so. He had a sense of history. He had a beautiful, accomplished wife and an attractive family, all of whom he publicly adored. He connected with people.

In other words, he was a real human being.

No wonder Preznit Fuckwit hates him so much.

I shed angry tears at the sight of the Lincoln Memorial, home to Marian Anderson’s poignant concert (and fuck-you to the DAR), and I Have A Dream, being used to shill energy drinks and nicotine pouches. I refused to watch the homoerotic money grab, but I’ve read that the asshole who shat out the slur against Michelle Obama was so drunk at the weigh-in that he puked all over himself. JFC.

Let’s not forget that we won the Iran War! Iran gets billions, the Strait of Hormuz is still controlled by Iran, and we got…bupkis. The Shart Of The Deal.

David M Marko's avatar

The thing is he will declare how bigly he won this war and Iran is eating out of his hand and how prices will drop like nothing you have ever seen before and the MAGAOTS will eat this shit with a fork.

arne link's avatar

I have to believe that even those people see the price of groceries and gas going up. Gas has come down some, I don't know why.

Anne Haines's avatar

The price of gas has come down because they're adding more ethanol than was previously permitted.

DebJS's avatar

Shame on the Guardian, we expect better than that from them. Now I can stop feeling guilty for not donating.
