today in Shit That Happened While I Was Writing This Shit—

Peter Magyar was just sworn in to replace Viktor Orban.

https://x.com/DemocraticWins/status/2053106101172789478

if Hungary can do it, so can we

HI2thDoc's avatar

Apparently, Hungary is hungrier than us for what is good, right, moral, and sane.

Susie's avatar

I see what you did there.

Anna Bolique's avatar

That's because they actually supported him for the better part of the 16 years he spent in power.

Susan Marleau Whelan's avatar

If South Korea can impeach and imprision their president, so can we.

myhoopbabies's avatar

Thank you, this is interesting and terrifying. And where, oh where, is our damn Congress, who are actually in a position to do something about this clear and present danger? On vacation! Where else?

Crabby Canuck's avatar

Thanks for sharing that. I beleive there was something similar done a year or so ago, but might not have made it to anyone in Congress formally.

As much as I love this, what I have to question though, based on the grammatical and cohesiveness (or lack thereof) content of his tweets, that someone else is at the keyboard at times. He's not dextrous enough to write by Capitalizing Each Word on a tiny keyboard unless he has a built-in feature, which I'm not aware of. His "norm" is either lower case or ALL CAPS. The ones with caps on each word tend to be more cognitively cohesive and less rambling.

The other thing that can make this a quagmire to prove, is definitively, how much of what he says is intentional theatre? He is, after all, an reality TV host first. Acting is second nature to him. I swear half the shit that he spews is for the agitation factor. He revels in it.

Therefore, I think the experts would have a challenge presenting an open and shut case on him unfortunately.

It would take us back to "What is the meaning of "is"?"

Susan Rockefeller's avatar

If acting is really second nature to him he is an awful actor. Maybe he uses a microphone to create his texts. He thinks the world loves him-a stable genius 🤮Read Dr George’s Gaslighting Report if you want to see what is wrong with him.

Crabby Canuck's avatar

Thanks for the tip.

Theresa Palmer's avatar

What he spews IS for the agitation factor, as you say. He does love to roll around in that muck.

There obviously is someone typing his words and making them into coherent, at times, sentences. He is in no way articulate enough to compose those things, much less type them out, himself.

Bonnie Council's avatar

While I can appreciate your comments, I honestly don't believe anyone could pull off some of the shit that rolls from trump's mouth as intentional theater. I believe he really is as ignorant and inept as he appears. And that's terrifying.

Lynn Van Haren's avatar

Apparently not. It’s hard to believe that South Korea & BRAZIL(!) could hold their leaders to account while the Republican Party defended an insurrectionist & didn’t hold him to account

Frank's avatar

Because he has them close to what they want: Permanent one-party rule.

Crabby Canuck's avatar

The Republican party is what happens when you gather all the morally bankrupt people you can possibly find together under one umbrella.

Mary Hall's avatar

Suggested weekend reading or viewing is "A Tale of Two Cities."

Tina Zep's avatar

Too late for that unfortunately 🥺

Oh, be still my heart!

I agree with you 100%!

We are being "ruled" by a Tryanny of the MINORITY. A ruthless, racist, White nationalist MAGA minority. At most 25%-30% of Americans strongly approve of the MAGA agenda. 60%-70% disapprove. Regardless of gerrymandering, the inhumane TRUMP/MAGA agenda gives us the REAL opportunity to bring many hard working Americans back to the inclusive, human agenda of the Democratic party. The contrast couldn't be greater. FRET LESS DO MORE!! WIN!!

Joe Witkowski's avatar

60% of US Catholics voted for Satan 🤦‍♂️

Elizabeth Schulz's avatar

A huge number of that minority is based on their race hatred and willingness to take us back to 'jim crow' days. I think it might have been Last Monday:s (?) show when Rachel Maddow dove deeply into this. Scary shit indeed just how racist these fuckers are, but if you simply look around (any of us) SO MANY of those gotten rid of by the frump/musk/doge 'coalition' and now kegsbreath trying to make it 100% by decimating our military of ALL the top black Generals/Admirals, it'll become so obvious, Getting rid of the women who've likewise earned their places is an extra 'bonus' for these misogynistic, racist fuckers.

Linda Weide's avatar

Hurray for Hungary!

Meanwhile Putin or his body double trembled at his V-Day Parade that Zelensky allowed him to have missile free. Trump asked Zelensky for this for his buddy Putin.

I am a member of Indivisible Abroad. I lead a group in a city in Northern Germany. Indivisible Abroad and Indivisible are some of the organizations supporting Free Speech for People's campaign to impeach Trump and his cabinet. Margaret's avatar

You said that already, Joe. What's your point? What percentage of southern Baptists voted for Satan? How about Evangelicals?

Joe Witkowski's avatar

I’m ashamed of my faith tradition. If you’re Catholic you should be too. I don’t give a damn about the others. The others haven’t posed as Triumphalists since the Middle Ages. Use your God damned brain already.

Margaret's avatar

Oh, Joe, I am so sorry. You and I have been horribly abused by the Hierarchy of the Catholic Church. But please don't be angry with me! I've worked my head off to reform the Institution, both from the inside and then from the outside. I'm happy to be free from the damned Institution. And Triumphalism is a joke; who cares?

I am ashamed at the damage done by the Church, but my sense of justice rebels at letting every other so-called "Christian" sect off the hook.

I dunno, I kinda expect people who consider themselves to be Christians to know their Commandments, like the ones about adultery, bearing false witness, stealing, coveting, and idolatry. Which to all you delusional MAGAfuckers means your guy is not a representation of what you claim to be. That is a pretty low bar, you judgmental assholes.

HI2thDoc's avatar

I forgot the one about not killing. Yeah, he breaks that one too. Of course.

I'm thinking that they view the 10 commandments as a to-do check list.

It’s

The Ten Commandments For Thee, But Not For Me

rlritt's avatar

Seriously, they do not think it applies to Trump. He has a special dispensation to commit any crime or sins he wants. They get a return to a good old fashioned racist, sexist America. Yay!

Their version of Christianity says they are automatically forgiven for everything. In their (wrong!) reading, you don’t even have to repent!

Golly Gee! Yet another opportunity to quote Ambrose Bierce's definition of a Christian: "Someone who believes the Bible is divinely inspired and ideally suited to the needs of his neighbor. One who follows the teachings of Christ insofar as they are not inconsistent with a life of sin. "

(Not all Christians, naturally but certainly those belonging to the MAGA cult.)

HI2thDoc's avatar

They need to try harder, FFS

Diana's avatar

Bingo Joyce ~ you’re absolutely right ‼️

Lynn Van Haren's avatar

Their “Christianity” is just cover for grift

Mingo's avatar

They skipped over the Old Testament. They only read the parts where Jesus is mentioned.

HI2thDoc's avatar

If they read it, they got nothing out of it

P123Sunny's avatar

(Highly recommend John Fugelsang’s book “Separation of Church & Hate” fyi)‼️

Anne Haines's avatar

Actually the Christofascists follow the Old Testament more than the New. They like the God who says he will smite their enemies, not the Jesus who says they must love them.

Susan Niemann's avatar

I've always understood MAGA is a cult, but that first clip where she says: “I’m looking forward to 2028. Trump 2028.” and then doesnt care about what the constitution says... this really drives it home. HOW do we fix that? How do we make people smart and get them to snap out of it? You can give them factual data and they still stay stuck in Trumpism... it's a battle that seems unwinable. Very discouraging.

I have older friends who will bring up Hillary and her emails. Really? How does that have anything to do with whats happening now? No one will try to research anything to get answers...they just believe whatever their pickleball group says! And the racism in this country... I'm mortified and embarrassed. :(

myhoopbabies's avatar

It's bewildering and kind of unbelievable (still!) that there are so many Americans who are so empty-headed and brainwashed that they are just all-in for the stupidest man on the planet. Why? I agree, this seems unfixable and it's really fucking depressing.

Mary Lou Williams's avatar

Those people still pro-Trump who are not billionaires will not even consider changing their allegiance until they are personally unable to afford gas, food, entertainment, vacations, private schools, medical necessities etc. Even potatoes will be hard to find as Canada is putting the squeeze on this administration. We are only in the early stages of this nightmare. Stockpiling reminiscent of Y2K hoarding on the horizon?

myhoopbabies's avatar

My husband and I just had the hoarding conversation this morning. I went to Costco this week and all of the paper products looked pretty depleted. Reminded me of the TP hoarding during COVID. Seems inevitable, especially with a new, exciting virus in the news.

Mary Lou Williams's avatar

Speaking of Costco products, it seems the goods are slowly switching from actual food to merchandise.

Denise Donaldson's avatar

Two points here: first, when "they" can't afford any of those things, "we" won't be able to, either, so not looking forward to that situation.

Second, they might change their allegiance, unless they're convinced all their troubles are the Dems' fault. And if they do change temporarily, they'll go right back to worshipping the next Rump wannabe.

The only way forward is past them. Leave them in the dust, and if they whine, well, too bad---they've made their beds.

Hilary M's avatar

I think the why has a lot to do with the crap education that Americans get. And it’s only getting worse. We are rearing generations of non-critical thinkers who don’t know how to question authority or why it’s important to do so. I can’t help but think America is doomed 😩

SPW's avatar

We are seeing the combined results of No Child Left Behind and funding cuts across the board in rethuglican run states.

Joe Witkowski's avatar

https://oneworldhouse.net/2017/06/10/comey-trump-and-kohlbergs-stages-of-moral-development/

In my Franciscan Catholic High School - 11th grade - we had to study (6 credits) Kolberg’s Theory of Moral Development (-aka *Christian Morality*) with equal weight to Calculus, AP Chemistry, and AP Physics.

No one in this current maladministration of antichrists could find Kolberg’s Theory with a Google search. We are doomed.

Laurie's avatar

I'll try to answer your why. One of the reasons racism is used in campaigns is to pit us against each other – divide and conquer. People will vote against their own best interests in the name of racism and being anti-abortion. Also, our education system is pitiful. Young people are learning nothing about history or government, given no moral compass (I'm not suggesting that we teach religion in schools), and they're not taught critical thinking. And teachers are pressured into passing students even when they're totally illiterate. We're not allowed to flunk anyone. I was a teacher and I can vouch that this is absolutely true. Unfortunately, this is bigger than a problem in our government. It's a societal problem. I personally believe that capitalism is a huge factor in all of our problems. I don't believe we will ever have an egalitarian society if money and power are so closely twined together. And perhaps we need to get rid of having a president in the first place. We say no kings, but if we give one person so much power, it kind of sounds like a king to me. We clearly don't have enough checks and balances or this wouldn't be happening. Sadly, we have failed at establishing a true democracy. The only bright spot in all this is that we now see it. You can't fix something you don't know is there. I'm astounded every day that this continues and no one is willing or able to stop it.

arne link's avatar

The only thing that gives me hope is that I see young people dating and hanging with others of all races and sizes. That may save us, eventually. Granted my state is bluer than blue but just seeing that gives me hope.

Laurie's avatar

That does sound hopeful.

Denise Donaldson's avatar

"People will vote against their own best interests in the name of racism and being anti-abortion."

You're right, Laurie. And yet, conservatives and Establishment Dems continually accuse Progressives of being niche-issue voters!

I don't know if we need to get rid of Presidents. As various people have pointed out (e.g., Jon Stewart), much of what Rump has done to harm the country is technically legal, because his handlers have exploited existing loopholes that no one ever used before. If all those loopholes were shut tight, there would at least be bases for legally contesting the relevant actions.

Your post is just chock-full of great points!

Laurie's avatar

Thank you. I agree that progressives seem to bear the brunt of a lot of shadow projection from others. Makes me feel like yelling, "Look in the mirror!" I agree with you that it's possible that we could fix the loopholes in our system. I was just thinking of a book I read decades ago when I was in college by Marge Piercy called Woman on the Edge of Time and I remember her outlining a society that was based on local councils, i.e., groups of ordinary people that would serve for a certain length of time. It was an interesting concept, but perhaps naïve. My concern when I read it, although I liked the concept overall, was that you could have someone who was very uneducated running things. Well, we already have that! Difficult to believe that it's come to this. I'm always astounded when I see the polls and they say that 30% of Americans still support Dump. Frightening. Here's hoping that we all stay relatively safe until we get this essentially mad man out of office. I hope we can repair our democracy! Take care.

Denise Donaldson's avatar

I share your astonishment!!

Susan Niemann's avatar

I worry about the dumbing down of America. 🙄

Denise Donaldson's avatar

The way to fix the cultists is probably to help them make Kool-Aid. Just saying...

BigDaddy52's avatar

I think Mwfeiger is hinting at a 'special ingredient'.

Mwfeiger's avatar

It's a special blend from a jungle in South America. Very effective as witnessed in the 1980's...

We need to elect a majority of members of Congress who take the Constitution seriously, including the parts about Congress deciding how money is spent, how many terms a president can serve, and who gets to declare war.

Denise Donaldson's avatar

Yeah, if only a majority of candidates who run felt that way...

rlritt's avatar

I read someone who said that Trump's crimes were nothing compared to Biden's administration. Other than Hunter Biden's

2Cats2Furious's avatar

That’s just some random MAGA airhead. What is REALLY terrifying is a clip from this week of Sen. Chris Coons (IIRC) questioning 3 judicial nominees, NONE of whom would say that Trump can’t run again in 2028 under the 22nd Amendment. Potential federal judges!

Susan Niemann's avatar

You’re right! I saw one of them-they should be required to pass civics tests. It’s ridiculous!!

Mary Hall's avatar

It's been the Long Con to steal money away from the people by keeping them full of fear, sick, poor, and stupid. It started right after FDR's New Deal, was jacked up a lot after LBJ's Great Society, and put on steroids and jet fuel with the St. Ronny Raygun maladministration, the creation of Fux News, H8 radio, and co-opting the religious nut jerbs to join in the fun.

Lynn Van Haren's avatar

I have found that you can present MAGA with facts backed up by links to the investigations & they will just say, “ Fake News!”

Michael Guenon's avatar

Okay, my closest pickleball friends up here on California’s north coast are definitely anti-MAGA’s and show up for No Kings protest rallies, which doesn’t mean there are no MAGA’s. Actually I have been pleasantly surprised. Let’s not impugn all pickleballers. 😂

Mary Lou Williams's avatar

Just the ones in Florida and Orange County

rlritt's avatar

My friends and neighbors down in Orange County are not MAGA, and 3 times we had good local No Kings showing on PCH.

rlritt's avatar

She knows, MAGA thinks Trump dogma is better than the Constitution. I'm sure if he decided to rewrite the Constitution, Republicans in congress would wholeheartedly agree. This is how a dictator takes over.

LJ's avatar

Unfortunately, this is what happens when you completely eff up the education system. This did not happen overnight. Look back to an election where education was one of the campaign promises. I’m not talking about going to college and get your PhD. I’m talking fundamentals.

Rachel C's avatar

Remember, half of any group is below average on whatever you are measuring—brains, information, determination and so on. I dare say most of “us” are smarter and more aware than most people 👹 We still must care about everyone else and their humanity. Not always easy 👹

rlritt's avatar

While not technically criminal, the State Department's internal policies at the time (specifically the Foreign Affairs Manual) stated that "normal day-to-day operations" should be conducted on standard, secure State Department equipment, not private systems. So not even a crime.

Douglas Paul Truhlar's avatar

Susan, I am used to straight forward logic no edicts from on high so MAGA falls through on reason 101. So I go nowhere from the start. The other thing is they are dragging James Comey out again and that always leads to ‘Hillary’s emails’ she is tough, 11 hours grilling in one of the dumbest hearings ever and most are very dumb.

Jennifer Eory's avatar

Seriously, no reader here is going to live to see the last of these brainless right wingers. That MAGA moron was very young, and all we can hope is that when HER generation finally all die off in 60 years, future American citizens of low intelligence will have less of a rabid anti-liberal bias than the present day dumb Americans do.

arne link's avatar

By the time her generation dies off we will be 70% mixed race. It's just a numbers game. The white folks can't possibly get rid of all the people with melanin in their skin. It's impossible.

That drug is the closest thing (still used in mental lockdowns) to just die. It’s one of the MAGA commandments.

Betsy L's avatar

I have never actally sat down and read the Constitution from beginning to end, either. But anytime there's a discussion of a particular amendment, I read it and use it to understandwhat's going on.

myhoopbabies's avatar

Exactly, because you are intelligent, rational, and inquisitive (I'm assuming 😀). I haven't read the whole thing either, but I've read the 25th amendment about 1,000 times now.

Mary Lou Williams's avatar

And these are the cultists the supreme court just gave control over the entire south. And the rest of the country soon enough.

COVID didn't take nearly enough of these bastards.

I just felt like I read a sci-fi article when reading Trump's statements about anything. If I shake my head any more, I'll get dizzy. I see there's a Stephen Miller spawn in the oven. Was she that desperate to have a baby that she picked HIM? I've heard some of her comments though. They are a perfect match.

DebJS's avatar

And they've been very busy - already have 3 other spawn.

Let's not let the Jared Moskowitz Congressional hearing information that Stephen Miller diverted $2.8 billion in FEMA Funds to 23 offshore accounts controlled by Trump's billionaire buddies fall by the wayside. Remember when Stephen sat for 2 1/2 minutes without answering. Maybe remind us all of that viral moment. Love you, Jeff!

DebJS's avatar

Whoa! Was that this past week?

arne link's avatar

I missed that. Really?

Trump did not write that post about the UFO files. There's no way in hell he knows what the word "tranche" means much less how to use it in a sentence.

Susie's avatar

Ohmygawd I thought the exact same thing!!! Tranche is a dead giveaway! 🙄🙄🙄

From what I see, he hasn't written his own posts for a year.

When I see some of these clueless MAGAots with their cognitive dissonance I often wonder how they navigate daily life. The inability to grasp reality must make it a challenge.

rlritt's avatar

And the problem is that they so much emotionally invested in being MAGA that they cannot allow themselves to see his true nature. That would mean everything they believed was false. Then would lose their identity.

I want reporters to ask ppl such as that woman Trumper: why do you like Trump? What has he done for you? Was being a racist that important a goal? Something that makes the world better?

Does the whole US government have to be brought down so far that everyone must be more stupid than Trump? Can we just go back to believing in science? Viruses, bacteria are real?

Race is about climate not genetic differences.

rlritt's avatar

I asked some Trump. supporters about all the money he and his spawn have grifted since his election--billions and billions--including foreign "gifts" They have no problem with it. " He is just a good businessman." Actually he only played a good business man on TV. He inherited millions and lost most of it and filed bankruptcy and had to be bailed out several times. If it wasn't for the 12 years starring as a great businessman in a scripted TV game show, he would have gone broke and never been elected.

Lynn Van Haren's avatar

You know that & I know that, but the tRumpers continue to believe what they watched on The Apprentice

Terri Nighswonger's avatar

Glad I never watched that

Lynn Van Haren's avatar

I lived in NYC during tRump’s “business” days. I didn’t need the show to know he was a moron

rlritt's avatar

I know. People think TV is real life. Its not. And now even "news" programs are scripted. Propaganda has replaced the truth.

Lynn Van Haren's avatar

Just like in Putin’s Russia & then Orban’s Hungary. Trump isn’t destroying tbe US by himself. He’s too stupid for that. Putin is coaching him all the way

rlritt's avatar

Its so clear Putin has something on Trump. And all the News outlets act when Trump meets him privately, that he is discussing important international issues and not just getting his orders and being told what will happen if he doesnt obey.

Joyce's avatar

The racism is the goal--rather, the free expression of it. Look at how fast the Confederacy seized the newly-granted opportunity, courtesy of the Extreme Court, to disenfranchise Black voters.

I have to admit: I was unaware, to this point, how deeply and unapologetically racist John Boy Roberts is. I'm ashamed I was so clueless.

I do wonder if Clarence "My rich sponsors don't think of me as being Black" Thomas is starting to feel the heat. Or if he remains oblivious about his money-machine, Harlan "Oh, yes, we do, boy" Crow.

Pam Humphrey's avatar

Wonder if anyone’s ever told ol’ Clarence that HE is black? Or, did he just forget?

Rachel C's avatar

I think he believes he has an honorary White card because he’s on the Supreme Court and has rich white friends👹

Suki Herr's avatar

I think I was on to Roberts the minute he flubbed President Obama’s 1st confirmation. He had to confirm a 2nd time. Whether Roberts had a goal in mind or just rage at swearing in a black president 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Bethie U's avatar

My late husband and I gasped when John "I don't need no stinkin' cue cards" Roberts totally fucked up the words. We put it down to arrogance and overconfidence. The recent historical revelations of the Chief Justice on the Voting Rights Act has put everything in a new and nasty light and confirms your suspicions. He used to care about his legacy. Not anymore.

Mitch Moncrief's avatar

They like trump bec they want to be part of a group they see as anti-elitist, strong “values” and returning the country to its former greatness. Why they don’t see the racism and sexism can be explain by dunning-Kruger, lack of critical thinking, selfish interests ( money and power), and a constant barrage of lies that eventually become normalized ( fake news, immigrants are violent, the federal bureaucracy is wasteful, fraudulent and corrupt). At the same time you have a Dem party that was stupid enough to try and run a frail sitting president for re-election. No doubt it will get worse before it gets better ( thank you supreme ct.). Also want to do a shout out to Merrick Garland, Jill Biden and others who could have made this outcome less likely.

"Potty McKettleblack" genious.

How about the fact that we taxpayers are paying $6.9 MILLION for the repainting of the reflecting pool to Trumps favorite Pool Guy in a no-bid contract????? FFS the grift never ends and I'm sure he's getting kickbacks from this as well. What a country.

Trump is given the lowest bar for jobs reports in history and when the numbers are better he brags like a 7th grade boy that just got his first kiss. It's pathetic. He managed to average 18,000 jobs per month in 2025. Yipee! I'm sure the 140,000 will be revised lower but nobody will say a word to dear leader.

8647 before he kills US all

Mary de Ridder's avatar

The bragging is one of the things that could get him elected again! No matter what it is, no matter how far out, he takes the credit. And simply ignores the bad stuff.

And he wins with it every time.

Lynn Van Haren's avatar

No consequences so far for tRump’s obvious corruption

PollyP's avatar

*cough cough* *clears throat* Excuse me, @Jayme. The phrase that Jeff so brilliantly coined is "Potty McKettleblack." Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Jayme Wolworth's avatar

OMG Thanks for that, when I was typing it I thought it was off and now I have edited it to be correct!

Denise Donaldson's avatar

Heather Cox Richardson says that the no-bid contractor's repairs to the Reflecting Pool *may* already be ruined, due to Rump's motorcade's intrusion on the site. Hmmm....

Jayme Wolworth's avatar

That's what happens when incompetent people bow to Trump's every desire. I'm sure it will cost another $2 million to fix it. wink wink

arne link's avatar

Oh, you know he's getting a huge kickback from the pool guy. Disgusting.

Douglas Paul Truhlar's avatar

Once you start painting a pool you will need to do it every 2 years forever. Stop before it’s too late.
