I don't understand why they didn't vote for the candidate who might have listened to them (Harris) if she won, and then HOLD HER ADMINISTRATION'S FEET TO THE FIRE over Bibi's genocide in Gaza. Instead, by failing to vote for Harris, and/or voting for Trump, they made it much more likely that Gaza would be obliterated and the two-state solution would become impossible.

.

It was SO clear that Trump hates Muslims and is purely transactional with the rich ones in power in their respective countries and only them. Even on Bluesky those single-issue purity ponies are so furious about Bibi's genocidal ways, with good reason. They feel totally justified blurting out that America deserves to die because America has been supportive of Israel for decades. Never mind that the multi-ethnic citizenry of Israel is not in lockstep with Bibi's government, far from it. It's like drinking poison while expecting the object of your anger to die. It's called passing laws and being proactive about those laws even if no one has broken them yet. Like a law that you can't run for any federal office if you're a convicted felon. Do away with presidential pardons. Pass laws about term limits and age limits. There's much you can do if we ever get a majority again. Dems have had the majority in my lifetime and yet we have no universal healthcare (ObamaCare was a huge start though), no decent immigration policy that is enforced, no laws regarding Supreme Court misbehavior etc. We have been very reactive about the future of our country.

Expand full comment
George in Atlanta's avatar

Nope, not this one. The next one may or may not cover exactly the same land mass, we'll see. But any republic that follows (if) will take a very hard look at the costs of universal voting rights. MAGAs and the fascists before them long wanted restrictions along racial and sex lines, a future republic may reasonably see the need to do it instead with requirements for education and intelligence.

In their 16th Century minds, the Founders probably were thinking the same thing, but chose to use race and property as proxies, since they did not have more direct access to the information we do today.

I'm glad to see that young people care about others in the world. But I don't understand why you would be so involved in another country's politics unless you were Jewish or Palestinian, to vote for someone who would destroy the US because you were more concerned about another country's political problems than what was staring you in the face here. Do the young think that Nazi Germany will never happen here? I was born right after WWII, so it was talked about all the time growing up. Maybe because people younger than myself that weren't growing up under the threat of being nuked by the Russians and hearing parents stories about WWII are quite naive about what happened years ago. If so, they need to visit Europe, especially Eastern Europe where the horrors of Nazism and Communism are still remembered by people living there.

Expand full comment
Linda Weide's avatar

Deborah, my nephew is growing up with Brown skin in a multinational family, as did I. For many people with brown skin, the deaths in Gaza looks like White Supremacists killing brown skinned people. Most of the youth who are protesting are not thinking which one country is democratic, which is not? In fact, we can see that democracy is not such a salient concept in the US. Look at how many voted for Trump or did not vote at all. I think a lot of people don't know what the terms democracy or fascism mean.

I did grow up with the Russian threat, but did not understand the possible danger when i was in college. Now I see the threat that Russia poses and am currently reading a book on their illegals program. I can tell you my nephew does not have such a complex understanding of global politics. His thinking of politics outside of the US is fairly new.

I protested to get my campus to divest from South Africa, so it seems normal to me to be involved in politics outside of the US as a student.

My children were deeply aware of what transpired in WWII. Their paternal grandfather served as a forward artillery observer in Europe. He never spoke of his experiences until our son was born, then he would regale him with stories of what Grandpa had endured in the war. Hiding in a tree behind German lines, calling in artillery strikes that barely missed him. Capturing a bunker of Germans on sheer bravado and a gas can... my kids know. My daughter was appalled that we were still sending munitions to Israel to participate in what she (rightfully, I believe) views as genocide.

She ultimately voted for Harris, knowing what horrors would await us all should Trump win. Unfortunately, not enough people understood the assignment.

My 23-year-old nephew viewed both Kamala and Trump as corrupt, and also he seemed to take Trump at his word. Naively. I need to find new, cool, social media podcasters for him to listen to. I am searching. Haven't found the right ones yet. Anyway, he complained that both supported bombing Gaza, and he also said he wished he could be a Green Party member. That is with the understanding that the Green Party in the US is not what it should be, so not really an option.

I don't know what Harris would have done on election, but with AIPAC, I don't see how she could have switched from supporting them. They are a powerful lobby. I could see my nephew supporting AOC, who is a very different kind of Brown skinned woman. Jefferson Cowie says that only a populist can win, and he does not mean the bad kind. My book club read a book by him called Freedom's Dominion where he talks about those who believe in Freedom for White Men that allows them to have dominion over others. We also attended a talk of his. Here is a piece I wrote on it.

If you were concerned about Gaza and that area of the world, why on earth would you for one nanosecond considering voting for a Republican. The Israeli/Gaza issue is very complicated. We have to lose the schoolmarm attitude and concern ourselves with issues that hit closer to home for the average American.

Proper use of pronouns and LGBT issues just don’t resonate like many on the Party think they do.

Carville is actually correct. He is closer to the mood of the non voters than the ones driving the Dems agenda right now.

The pronoun issue and men in women's sports is not a winning issue for most Americans. Why is it a major election issue at all? Trump made a comment about it or someone close to him. They bring out the trans issue when they want to rile up their base. And if I don't believe that males should compete with biological females, why does that make me a hater? It's like if you don't embrace the use of pronouns other than he/she or don't want males in locker rooms with females, then you're a hater and a bigot. I find that an unfair label and it sure wouldn't make me want to vote for a Democrat that labeled me as such. People are entitled to their opinion about things, as long as they don't act out/speak so it harms someone. People care right now about their incomes, prices of things, being yanked off the street and never seen again, not having affordable housing etc.

The problem, as I see it, is the opposition will take any issue (out of hundreds that exist) and blow it all up, and say that's what we ALL stand for. Pronouns aren't a problem, but they make it one by harping on it, somehow even otherwise sensible people start to think it is a problem. It is not, call anyone whatever they tell you to. Problem solved.

As for trans-persons in "women's" sports, that is an issue best left to the experts like my stepdaughter in Canada, who studied sports medicine, kinesiology, and various other subjects, that understand the difference in those who take puberty-blocking delaying hormones, and those who go through puberty, it should not be some Cletus in Missouri's decision

How exactly is he ‘hurting the Democrats’? Have we become such a thin skinned bunch that we can’t listen to the opinion of a man who has been helping to elect Dems since before many here were even of voting age?

All the sanctimonius outrage just proves his point unequivocally.

Lighten up! Let the man have his say, and it wouldn’t hurt to consider his message dispassionately and see if it hits too close to home for your own comfort and that is the real reason you are apoplectic about a simple opinion.

And if the word Preachy offends you, well- there are various reasons why that may be. But it is a very descriptive word and might apply here more than some are comfortable admitting.

Very discombobulated organization of protest sites for todays events.

I had trouble finding where they were. And the one two weeks ago at the Govt. Center in WPB was not repeated today for some reason. They need to be consistent with the protest venues to avoid making it more difficult for people.

So I drove to Southern Blvd by Mar a Lardo for the scheduled demonstration there but nobody assembling!

I came home.

My sister bought an old farmhouse in France, complete with outbuildings. The had six of the cutest little stone hen houses you ever did see - each complete with a little run of wooden steps so the hens didn't hurt their little legs when they came out.

When she moved in, I came along to help her renovate - the house was 200 years old, and the very nice old guy she bought it from probably moved in when it was new. So, lots to do. When we'd swept and cleaned and painted the house, she said "Time to clean out the hen houses!"

I swear, that chicken shit had not been cleaned for YEARS. It was four feet deep and had turned to concrete. I had to wear a mask and goggles and crack it with a hammer.

Mind you, the omelettes we had for dinner that night were damn nice. . .

She eventually moved the hens into the barn, and turned the six hen houses into 3 gites. I often wondered what the people who came to stay would have thought if they knew what had been there before, She just said " Oh, they used to be storage sheds. . ." Never said they'd been storing chickens. . .

Every town has a church though so they planted the seed everywhere as you know, funerals are popular for the churches. However the people do everything as a family no matter what, if one falls they pick that one up and support them, they hold hands and grandma always has an escort when out, it very lovely. So they don’t talk the talk but they walk the walk of Christianity.

We have a protest today (Saturday). Nonviolent. Take deep breaths, but be loud. Remember President Eisenhower was a patriot and demonstrably supported the Supreme Court’s order Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, 347 U.S. 483 (May 17, 1954). I covered what he did in Little Rock, AR, in my post below. In September 1957, Eisenhower ordered the elite 101st Airborne to restore order in Little Rock. The picture of those troop driving from Fort Campbell in the dark of night sticks in my mind. Regular Army troops activated to restore order is a rare occurrence. We should not forget why: the cause of anti-racism. The racism that prevailed in my youth is disgusting to me, and has been not only unleashed, but also promoted by a lawless administration. https://hotbuttons.substack.com/p/forking-roads?r=3m1bs
