programming note: there is some dispute as to whether or not Dwight D actually said what I quoted him saying.

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/eisenhower-proof-nazi-atrocities/

so I took advantage of the Liberty Valance Rule. "this is the west, sir. when the legend becomes fact, print the legend"

Kay-El's avatar

“I made the visit deliberately, in order to be in position to give first-hand evidence of these things if ever, in the future, there develops a tendency to charge these allegations merely to 'propaganda” is basically the same but not as punchy.

Jeff Tiedrich's avatar

def not as punchy, it's why I went with the legend

Had I been around for his elections I probably wouldn't have voted for Ike, but one thing I will always be grateful to him for, is he had his troops take ordinary German citizens, not government figures or bureaucrats, but ordinary German Hitler supporters, on MANDATORY bus tours of the concentration camps so they could finally view the reality of what they had supported. Netflix has (or had, I don't know if it's still there) documentary footage of the camps taken by the US Army. Ike made sure the Army kept a record. It's interesting to see the difference in the facial expressions of the Germans getting on the bus, and what they looked like when the tour was done.

Kay-El's avatar

Indeed. The Nazis also filmed themselves and kept meticulous records, some of which didn’t escape destruction. PBS had a series quite some years ago on various wars and I’ll never forget seeing a Nazi bulldozing scores of bodies into a mass grave.

Michele Wesselman's avatar

I saw that footage in high school in an assembly. I don’t remember much else about the film, but that image is burned in my brain. Catholic high school in the early 70s.

Kay-El's avatar

Same and yes the timing is right.

george campbell's avatar

I have deceased relatives who served in the US Army units that liberated the death camps . They took their own black and white photos of the piles of bodies . The photos are still in someone's local war collections .

Marc Panaye's avatar

Dear friend, the film you are referring to is actually the Tommies using a bulldozer to try and bury the dead as quickly as possible to prevent an outbreak of diseases because of the decomposing bodies.

It is filmed after the liberation of Bergen-Belsen.

Here's a link to the website of the Imperial war Museum:

https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205194125

Kay-El's avatar

This was film actually produced by the Nazis during their reign, not after the liberation.

Patrick Daniels aka Cromulent1's avatar

Wasn’t aware of that Joanne… Ike’s parting warning about the dangers of the Industrial Military Complex has been my greatest memory of Ike…

george campbell's avatar

I read recently that the Germans who survived the war held on to the belief that nothing atrocious ever happened ; they held this belief for forty years after the war . Now they have laws that mandate the teaching of the Holocaust in schools .

arne link's avatar

I was married to a young German man in the 60's. I came across photos of the death camps in the library. When I showed them to him, he denied that that happened in Germany. He had never been taught that history in school.

george campbell's avatar

those ingrained beliefs are tough to counter . Abe Lincoln said it is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled . To the Germans credit , and with help from other countries , Germany came clean .

Fluttbucker's avatar

Take another look at the films from that event. Check out the expressions on the ANTIFA guys herding the the Germans through the camps.

I think maga supporters and enablers should have to take a tour of the concentration camp detention centers here or better yet have to spend a day or 2 there. Of course, they'd probably see the wretched conditions and justify them...

Joan Eisenstodt's avatar

Not as punchy; very Ike tho and true. Now tho we’re dealing with AI renditions that _show_ what others call the truth that isn’t. I think that scares me more.

so has everyone else…no worries! :)

Irascible Ink's avatar

Nope, I knew it was "bald".

I also know it's "cut the muster", not cut the mustard.

Additionally, it's "spit and image". Spittin' image is just how it sounds when we don't enunciate properly.

Unity In Defiance's avatar

Haha is that the Mandela effect? Because I’ve been using the wrong one too! I swear it was “bold faced!”

rlritt's avatar

For a blatant, shameless lie, bald-faced lie is the preferred and more common term in formal writing, though bold-faced lie is also widely understood and used due to people mistakenly associating "bold" (daring) with the meaning of "bare" (unconcealed) in the original barefaced lie phrase. While "bold-faced" technically refers to bold text, "bald-faced" (or "barefaced") correctly conveys brazenness, making it the better choice for describing audacious falsehoods.

Sharon Hudnall's avatar

How about "botox-faced lie"? The language needs a facelift.

rlritt's avatar

I love that. Very 21st century. Botox faced lie is perfectly appropriate for Trumps dolls.

Abigail Norling's avatar

george campbell's avatar

yes , but enough about Kristy Noem .

Cheri Collins's avatar

Me, three. Bald face doesn’t make any sense.

Leu2500's avatar

Oh, but it does. Google & the Merriam-Webster dictionary (I should check the OED, but I’m not going to be that pendantic) say barefaced refers to a clean shaven or unmasked face, ie shameless. & yes, anyone who tells a barefaced lie is so brazen as to be shameless. ICE, etc wearing masks are examples of liars afraid that they will be caught for their lies. And worse.

Bold-faced comes about because it’s been passed down orally & people correcting what they think is a mistake. See also tenderhooks v. Tenterhooks.

Robert Eckert's avatar

One of my favorite examples is "butt naked" for "buck naked": the phrase "buck naked" itself arose from a misunderstanding; it has nothing to do with bucks (although deer, like other animals, are commonly naked) but is from Norse baknaken "back-naked" as opposed to "stark naked" ("stark" from a root for 'strongly' means frontal as well as rear), so the further corruption to "butt naked" actually restores the original sense.

Irascible Ink's avatar

I knew it was buck, but I tend to lapse into butt myself sometimes.

PTW's avatar

Maggie&Lefty's avatar

I like it either way… if you’re bald you tend to be bold and if you’re bold you may be bald for all I know 😆

Susan Kemp's avatar

Nope, you were right all the time. So many people said it wrong that lots of people think “bold faced” is correct. I’m one of those nerds who likes to find out where idiomatic expressions come from.

That one doesn’t bother me nearly as much as when people write “tow” the line instead of “toe” the line. It means following orders, like if someone drew a line and you put your toes right against it. It certainly doesn’t mean to haul on a rope.

I had a boss who always wrote “too” when he meant “to” and “your” when he ment you’re.” It was bad enough when he did that in internal emails but very embarrassing when he did it in emails to customers.

Paula Dean's avatar

rlritt's avatar

It Musk who spent weeks in swing states.

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

And? His presence proved ineffective, especially in the Wisconsin Supreme Court election.

rlritt's avatar

Trump said on the air that Musk was helpful to him because he knows a lot about computers. He especially spent a lot of time in Pennsylvania and he is really good with computers.

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

Trump says a lot of things. But computers have nothing to do with the actual votes cast. And what on earth does "good with computers" mean anyway?

rlritt's avatar

Of course they do. All voting is recorded and counted on computers. You don't think they actually hand count ballots, do you.

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

To actually hand count ballots would require weeks, multiplying staff by ten times and exploding the budget of all boards of elections. Given the size of our country it can't be done. However, most of us vote on paper ballots which provide a backup.

But the bottom line is that the scan computers aren't connected with anything that could "rig" them — they are not networked. I've trained on both precinct-level and central scan systems. They don't feed the results anywhere they could be changed. Even the touchscreens don't do that despite the story made up in Ohio in 2004 ... but I better not repeat that one because smoke will start coming out my ears. DEMOCRATS made it up when it was literally impossible and that started this whole fiction that voting machines can be "rigged."

Pam Humphrey's avatar

It wasn’t that long ago that ballots were counted by hand. I was an election judge for more than 20 years. In Texas, we did it at the voting precinct level, marking the count on pieces of paper and checking every few minutes to ensure that at least three counters had the same numbers. It didn’t take days or weeks, just one long, long night.

arne link's avatar

I believe that there was interference, or "fuckery" as Jeff would say. If you read This Will Stand it is all explained.

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

That's false. The only "cheating" he did was currying favor with the "mainstream" media which downplayed all his nasty moves and smeared Joe Biden for him while pretending he wasn't in steeper "cognitive decline" and then they went on a rampage against Harris because she wouldn't run her campaign according to their rules, that is, constantly answering questions about what she thought about this or that thing Trump said and refusing to amplify her own message. And there was a big helping of misogyny.

He was also helped by state Republicans who made accessing the ballot more difficult and by purity progressives who told people not to vote to "teach Democrats a lesson."

He did not, however, win the actual votes. There's no more proof of that than of the 63 losing lawsuits he filed in 2020 claiming Joe Biden didn't win. Changing the results of an election at the polling place is virtually impossible, and it didn't happen in 2024.

Look: I get it. We desperately want to believe he didn't win, the voters couldn't be that stupid, that there was no way this country could have looked at Trump and said "Yeah, he's the guy." But by claiming the actual votes weren't legit, we're indulging in the same sort of "change the facts to fit our fantasy' thinking that the right does.

And we won't fix what's wrong until we deal with truth and not a longed-for fantasy.

MzNicky in East Jesus, TN's avatar

You keep saying this as though your opinion is verifiable fact. It isn’t. As I pointed out to you last time you made this claim, both Trump and Elon have admitted publicly that they fucked with the voting. Do you have hard statistical evidence of some sort that Trump “won” because purity ponies stayed home and Repubs made it harder to vote? If so, let’s see it.

Lori's avatar

So there is no way the thumb drives that go into the DS200 can be compromised? Not sure about that either way, just very skeptical about the overwhelming win for Trump after all the statements he made. I agree with all the hindrances you mentioned: misogyny, protest votes, complicit media, etc., but was that enough for ALL the swing states to cave? IDK. Not that it matters now, Nobody is going to investigate.

MzNicky in East Jesus, TN's avatar

The Dems should have immediately challenged it. Too bad they’re such gutless chickenshits.

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

No. Any piece of equipment that is handled at a board of elections goes through a chain of custody that would prevent that. And the votes aren't just on some "thumb drive"—they are on ballots, and no, there's nothing that can be' compromised" by some random outside person. And yes, as much as it breaks our hearts, the propaganda was enough for all the swing states to veer slightly toward Trump. You don't need to "investigate." The evidence is right in front of youif you were following it. Three weeks hundreds of articles about JoeBiden's alleged "cognitive decline." Democrats shooting themselves in the foot with "let's have an open convention even though there's no time for it" (probably the people still hoping for Bernie). Media demanding that Harris spend all her time with the legacy media answering questions about Trump. People who decides an absolutist position on Palestine was the most pressing issue facing America. And yes, misogyny and racism. Look at the vote totals: 2024 was an anti-turnout election.

A people starved and stabbed in th' untilled field;

An army, whom liberticide and prey

Makes as a two-edged sword to all who wield;

Golden and sanguine laws which tempt and slay;

Religion Christless, Godless—a book sealed;

A senate, Time’s worst statute, unrepealed—

Are graves from which a glorious Phantom may

Burst, to illumine our tempestuous day."

Preferably a Phantom sent straight from Cthulhu to make an old, mad, blind, despised and dying King run screaming around his gilded home shitting and gibbering all over himself.

He, tRumPutin, may actually be one of Cthulu's minions. If there is an Antichrist meant to bring about Armageddon, then I'd say he's here.

It remains shocking to me how soulless these people are. Not an ounce of humility or humanity. The ghost of Roy Cohn, the lessons he imparted to fatfuck, the absence of anything we could recognize as essential to this brief life we’ve been granted…

Well said. And sad. Really sad. 💔🇺🇸

You can criticize me all you want, but we would never be here if Kamala had been elected, or Hillary for that matter. Can't imagine how we will make it thru 3 more years with th I s sewer-hose mouth.

Actually Jonathan Ross was highly trained. He was in the National Guard deployed to Iraq in 2004-2005, worked for Homeland Security and as a Border patrol agent 2007-2015, so plenty of "training". Let's focus on the fact, that training be damned he just wanted to shoot her.

Sharon Hudnall's avatar

There are many more exactly like him deployed by ICE. I read that the Proud Boys, Oath Keepers, etc. are being absorbed into ICE. They've found their home and are ready to wage a series of January 6-type fuckfests.

Shady Vance jumped in to make excuses for Ross: He was dragged by a car in June, so OF COURSE he’s trigger happy. That guy isn’t fit to do more than pick up dog poop. (Neither is Vance.)

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

He was trained to be violent and have a disregard for human life.

My sister said something interesting when we were discussing Ross's snuff film (she watched; I couldn't). She said it was clear that Becca had no experience with domestic violence, but Renee did.

Renee knew she was dealing with an abuser. Becca didn't.

arne link's avatar

That is a fact. I'm afraid that the video has become snuff porn for incels. Especially the "fucking bitch." part.

Trump disrespects the American people every day, even his own ignorant supporters. I’ll continue my disrespect every fucking day even after he’s removed from office or croaks.

Just gonna throw this out there: Harris not only SHOULD have been president. She IS president. The 2024 election was bought and paid for.

Donnie Demento made no secret of the fix during the late stages of the campaign, when it was becoming pretty clear that Harris was steamrolling him. As usual, Demento said the quiet part out loud, when he spoke to his slaves about how he (suddenly) didn't need their votes; then, of course, he thanked Elonia for fixing the election.

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

It was never clear that Harris was "steamrolling" him. What was clear was that once again, as in 2016, the media would do everything in its power to make the election nail biter, and that meant tearing down the only qualified candidate.

Outdoorluvr's avatar

If it was so clear that Harris was steamrolling, then what reason did she and Walz and other Dems have to keep telling us that the election was going to be very (too) close? We need to accept the fact that things are not always as they appear. Crowd sizes and enthusiasm don't equate to majorities, as trump found out in 2020. Polling is not a reliable method with which to make any determination.

Joyce's avatar

To warn everyone not to be complacent and make the grand error of thinking staying home would be just fine.

Outdoorluvr's avatar

Now you're just using circular logic to defend your allegations of election fraud. Whatever. Harris and Dems KNEW they were not going to steamroll to a win. Regardless of what we think about campaign teams and advisors, they employ significant means to gathering relevant information about voters' intentions. All the general public really has, is a bubblegum machine mood ring. 🙄

Joyce's avatar

Okay--I realize you know far, far more than I could possibly ever understand. You win, you're right, you got it.

Joyce, no way to know for sure as there is no photo or bio——but I get the distinct feeling “Outdoorluvr” has more testosterone than estrogen….

Outdoorluvr's avatar

On the contrary - I don't know. It's all speculation, but there is no proof that the election was rigged. After all of his documented lies, why would we suddenly choose to believe that he was telling us he fixed the election? He's as dumb as a mud fence, but not stupid enough to admit THAT.

Fuck this fascist assholes. This is STILL America, and we are showing up and turning out, and we will continue to do so. It doesn’t make headlines as much as the Nazi actions do, but we ARE doing it—we ARE resisting. Hold fast and hold strong my friends.

Good one. I live in a blue bubble and even here there are lots of magas who make this old and sorry allegation on local social media sites every time info. about a protest is posted. It's tiring....Maybe i need to ask them about the medical benefits lol.

We also need to find out where to get our professionally made signs.
