I don't think they were coming with an ultimatum they were coming to clarify that it is Putin who needs to stop the war and Ursula van der Leyen already prepared a new package of sactions on Russia. I think EU and Ukraine need to hold the course and get the message that as long as they ask Trump to help out he is going to do the same kind of back stabbing the Putin does. Putin's network of dictators and despots is what Trump wants to be part of not some democracy alliance. He too wants to rob us blind and is robbing us blind. I am friends with the wife of one of the people on the German team. I don't think they think they can give Trump an ultimatum, although I would.

DJT has the nuclear codes and Europe knows he can’t be trusted to think clearly. They must handle the situation with kid gloves I think. Anybody (be they a leader of another country or a reporter) who stands up to him—calls him a liar to his face—knows they are taking a risk. Best case he throws them out of the meeting. Trashes them on Truth Social. Worst case he has a temper tantrum and orders a military response of some kind. They’re not going to risk it. Our governors are in the similar spot. They need to placate this guy. He has all these crazy loyalists around him who are in some kind of reality TV dream state who will help him do whatever he wants. It would be a big risk to call his bluff. I think Putin is banking on how vulnerable the world order is right now. Putin keeps stirring the pot with glee I think.

I think for Dump it's a question of whether it was in the old script he memorized when he was a kid to earn daddy's favor. That's what he's been operating on his entire life along with what was drilled into his head by that manipulative POS so-called lawyer Roy Cohn. He hasn't been able or wanted to learn any new thing since then including for his stint on The Apprentice. Which his producers reported years ago about what they tried but failed to get him to do to make his persona in the show even palatable. I think his whole life and persona is a humongous replay in which he's been churning out the same script over and over while his enablers reward him for it in millions of ways and $$$ to become a lifelong modus operandi. Horrible horrific and horrifying. Pardon the redundancy re the dunce. I mean Dump. I made my case.

All to avoid a toddler temper tantrum. It's simply insane that these world leaders have to do this. I was exhausted by then and could only shake my head in disbelief. What about all the US soldiers who just recently participated in the biggest NATO military rehearsal in Europe since the last world war. Specifically in response to the rise of Putin’s Russia military aggression threats to Europe. Is Rubio signalling that America under Trump is going to pull all the US military presently posted across Europe out and recall all US ambassadors ?

My maternal grandparents were born in Warsaw - travelled to Bethlehem on a Pilgrimage (yup, the real one) supposedly separately and just coincidentally met and married there. We were sold this tale and believed it without question until a bell went off in my head more recently and I realized they likely were forbidden to be together so ran off to be married. My grandfather (djadja) was gardener for a French Convent in Jerusalem and my Grandmother Babcia (sp?) wetnursed orphaned babies. I have some old photos. My mother and her 2 older brothers were born and raised there. My Dad showed up in his British Army uniform - later joining the British Police Force just so he could stay with his new family -which she likely thought would lead to the life of luxury she believed she deserved. Ha! Glasgow was cold, gritty and very much not to her taste - so we were coming to America to be with her older brother - it took some years. Weirdly, she refused to teach me any Polish at all despite my affinity for languages and constantly writing letters to her Polish acquaintances. I've previously mentioned her nonstop abuse of her children and pets. Angry, angry woman - which led me to disavow any of the Polish in me. But it is there and they ARE next on Putin's list.

Expand full comment
Marlene Lerner-Bigley (CA)'s avatar

Elizabeth, both of my parents were Holocaust victims. My mother was born in Berlin. My father, Poland. Between them, they spoke 5 different languages. They never taught us any of them. We did, however, learn “Father, Son, Holy Ghost” in Polish. Why? Because Jewish boys were sent to Polish Catholic schools and made to stand throughout their studies, all day. As my father was growing up, he never knew Polish. He only knew Yiddish. My mother wanted to disassociate herself from being a German because the Nazis declared her stateless and a non-citizen. Gave her a “foreigner’s” passport. Her parents were gassed at the camp known as Chelmno, in 1942.

I am sorry for what your mother put you and your siblings through. She unfortunately took her anger and her disappointments out on all of you. That’s painful.

Expand full comment
Elizabeth Schulz's avatar

YOUR parents literally suffered from and due to Hitler and his Gestapo thugs - how horrid(!), and my heart is so heavy for them and you because you too carry their pain. My mother's family were all Catholics (afaik) and she was not only virulently anti-semitic but equally hateful towards anyone of any race or religion she singled out. IF she'd been a survivor like yours I could have understood her rage but she ranted often about how she was a pampered child among the European community in Jerusalem and 'gave it up for 'him!' I believe she set her sights on my Dad because he was dashingly handsome in his mid-20's when they met. Of course, his turning out to be a lowly Tram Driver in Glasgow (which paid very little) once they'd been forced to return there was a huge disappointment to her but certainly wasn't close to being on the level of others' horror stories from the camps. How could it be? She truly was a lifelong narcissist which is why I recognized it so early on in frump. I also used to joke that she was meant to be a Nun and not a married mother, which path would have assuredly made every one of us happier, yet my older sister (who's become her doppelganger) became furious at me while defending her, blaming my Dad as always. HE would hand over his paycheck every week even while being berated nonstop. She'd never worked until we came to the US and a neighbour got her into CitiBank doing clerical work at night. It was a bit of a relief for all of us since she couldn't be screaming/raging/cursing while sleeping during our awake times. However, she was awake when WE needed to sleep and had all that rage built up. 'Couldn't win for losing' as they say here in NY. Sigh. Appreciate you - I'm still haunted by those little boys having to STAND all day in class!

Even if fraud were proven, it says nothing good that it was even close: well over forty percent definitely did vote for him, which is a much larger vote share than Lyndon Larouche or Charles Manson ever got, and why?

I predict that Monday’s meeting will involve Trump rambling about mail in voting, the Melania opera house at the Trump Kennedy, asphalt and basement pumps in DC and Russia, Russia, Russia. Then Zelensky and the EU leaders will play him like the egocentric idiot he is, offering meaningless flattery, before telling him they will continue to oppose Russian aggression. Trump will claim a diplomatic breakthrough and announce that he is assuming control over the Grammys. Laura Trump will receive the Best Album award.

One of the funniest, in retrospect, things I ever saw was Dumpy telling Zelenskyy that he "doesn't have the cards" to succeed against Russia without the US, and then several months later, Ukraine sends out dozens of drones to blow up targets well inside Russia, an operation that took at least a year to plan. The most delicious part is that Zelenskyy had to have been thinking about those drones when Dumpy was berating him. Not only did Zelenskyy keep a straight face and perfect composure during Dumpy's and Justa Dick's tongue-lashing, nobody on his military staff ever discussed the plans on Signal or left paper copies of them in a printer tray in Moscow.

Witkoff is another Russian asset in this regime full of them. I don't trust him further than I can throw an unfolded dollar bill. Which is what he's all about. Witkoff and his son selling out America for money. Typical MAGA

Expand full comment
longtimebirdwatcher's avatar

It's a basic requirement for most real estate developers to sell out for money, and to be in debt, too. I should know, my brother has been an aspiring real estate developer all his life. My mother handled all the money in our family. When she died, my brother got my father, a really good person, and legally blind, to sign something giving my brother half of his property so my brother could get a loan to pay off his expenses. According to the trust, half of the estate was supposed to go to me, the executor and the other half to him. Well, gee, I didn't find that out until eight years later. Of course he had it recorded right away, and my father, blithely thinking my brother could do no wrong, never mentioned it to me or our accountant, and apparently assumed that (I guess) that was the half my brother was supposed to get. Well, when we had the meeting about dividing up the estate, and he asserted that the half of the estate that was my share was actually only a quarter of the estate. I fought him and managed to get almost half of it ($440,000 out of $500,000) but we haven't spoken since.

I love Putin holding his nose in the Beast - apparently YKW pooped his pants again. I think, though, the reason the whole Fox News Cabinet came out of the meeting looking like death warmed over was that Putin told YKW to smile when Putin shoves it in, or Putin will yank back every dollar YKW has got, because he's got the hackers, and he will show the receipts to the world of just how much Russia's "loaned" him. And that YKW's being followed everywhere, even to the toilet where they change his diapers, because MarALago is plentifully supplied with moles, one of whom's the diaper changer, while another is banging Melania while she gives him info.
