I didn't want to get into this in my post, but I wouldn't be surprised if they try to come up with a bullshit reason to prosecute Goldberg

Bob Bowden's avatar

In the criminal’s mind, the murder would have been perfectly legal if only the witness had kept his fucking mouth shut.

Rick Calegari's avatar

Exactly and when this story first broke, Dump said he didn't know anything about it as always. Whenever he doesn't know anything, Fuckface the Last knows everything. Hoping heads will fly starting with Sieg Heil Hegseth and Waltz instead of the usual GOP sweep it under the rug bullshit.

Keith's avatar

how can a man supposed to be in charge not know anything about anything that occurred on his watch with so many ''i really don't know anything" about anything that may or may not have happened by someone he's never heard of or met before now? WOW!

oh that's right, the buck never stops with doughboy.

Keith, he doesn't know anything about what goes on. He abdicated his Presidency to Miller, Musk and all his sewer-clowns. All he does is play golf and sign whatever executive order someone wrote.

I genuinely don't miss Ms. Alternative Facts.

Bonnie Council's avatar

He was busy midnight texting about the artist who painted an ugly (he thinks) picture of him. Leave the poor president alone - he's got important stuff like that to worry about. And golf to cheat at.

Marlene Lerner-Bigley (CA)'s avatar

Rick, did you ever watch the old tv series “Hogan’s Heroes”? There was a character on there, Sgt. Schultz, who always said “I hear nothing. I see nothing”.

Rick Calegari's avatar

Still watch it. Sgt. Schultz was a great character unlike this lying felon we have to put up with.

Michael M's avatar

I used to have a boss who, when we were behind on a project and couldn't tell the client, the boss would tell us, "If the client calls and you answer, you're Seargant Schultz."

I wish I could believe heads would roll but they won’t. Republicans will keep defending this administration and then hack the midterms to stay in power.

I'll only believe he didn't know when he fires everyone on that call.

Patrick Daniels aka Cromulent1's avatar

Ditto Rick, dubious of any actual action taken by our duly elected!

Dave the Spot-on Moron's avatar

Who will fire them? It won’t be Donald Drumpf. It won’t be Congress. The only possible positive outcome would be that they’d be charged by a non-corrupt federal prosecutor. I think there may still be some of those left that Drumpf hasn’t fired or bought yet.

Carthago Delenda Est's avatar

It’s either plausible deniability. Or he’s lying his damn fool face off. Or the participants in this cabal think he’s too damn stupid to be trusted with the secrecy of planning this event.

Punkette's avatar

Signalgate was all over Morning Joe today as well. I am in California and my partner always watches MJ, Hour 4 (6-7 am PT). Jeffrey Goldberg and Sen. Mark Warner were among the guests and the screen shots were fully displayed and analyzed. The scandal was discussed for the entire fourth hour and then carried over to Ana Cabrera’s show, which segued to Day 2 of the Congressional Intelligence Committee hearings with Gabbard, Ratcliffe and Patel. MSNBC ain’t letting go of this exploding story.

Amy Horowitch's avatar

I’m sorry Mr Intel Chief, whoever the fuck you are; you can’t reason your way out of this by saying “everyone in the world uses the same weapon system” so it’s okay that our adversaries read our classified information! Either he’s a complete bozo, or Trump has a stronghold on his nuts!

Susan Niemann's avatar

Hey Deborah… I dont think I did…. lemme look again!

Linda Weide's avatar

Not just that, but I am wondering why Goldberg's Signal number was on Waltz's phone in the first place? Has he been leaking? I know that a lot of journalists offer their Signal contact to be leaked to if people don't want others knowing what they are saying. Also, wondering how they knew to look at the Signal account of the French Scientist. I have not read a single explanation yet that does not raise red flags for me. Are they spying on foreign visitors? And then Dean Blundell and Zev Shalev said that the Trump administration is going to be asking Green card holders to share their social media private accounts to the government. Well, we saw what they did with the German green card holder. They tried to force him to give up his Green card for no reason that I can see. So, I assume that spying on everyone's Signal account is on the list.

Punkette's avatar

Not being a Signal user, I just researched how the app group chat feature works. When scheduling a group chat, apparently all users with an active Signal account will pop up and can be invited. Jeffrey Goldberg confirmed on MSNBC last night that he has an account. When he first got the Michael Waltz chat invite, he thought it was a joke or scam, but curiosity won out, so he accepted it.

Others have questioned if Waltz meant to invite Jonah Goldberg and tapped the wrong JG account. (Jonah Jacob Goldberg is an American conservative journalist, author, and political pundit/commentator who was founding editor of National Review Online, from 1998 until 2019. He is author of The Dispatch, based in Washington DC, and writes a weekly column about politics and culture for the Los Angeles Times.)

The thick plottens! 🤔

Diane Findley's avatar

I'll bet you're right! I was wondering the same thing and this seems to make a lot of sense. Carelessness. But....why would he have been inviting Jonah Goldberg, who, of course, is not a government employee and would have no business being on the call either.

Punkette's avatar

Good question, Diane! Makes me wonder if the braggarts wanted to leak their big military accomplishment to the right-wing press, and whether this tactic has been used before.

Sharon Hudnall's avatar

Enlisting an "embedded journalist" who can shape their messaging, given Vance's issue about Trump needing maybe a month to persuade the public? An interview with Jonah Goldberg should be happening.

Nancy Potter's avatar

Yes, and as I recall, Jonah Goldberg is a conservative of the pre-2016 variety, not a MAGA, and hasn't exactly been a Trump cheerleader (which for Trump probably makes him worse than Jeffrey Goldberg.)

arne link's avatar

Maybe they were going for Jeff Goldblum? Who knows?

Wendy The Druid 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈🌈's avatar

Oh, thats juicy. I need to take a look into that. Punkette, you rock.

Punkette's avatar

Thanks, Wendy! Enquiring minds need to know 😉

Lady Emsworth's avatar

Myself, I was wondering if Waltz was a "Jurassic Park" fan - and meant to invite Jeff Goldblum.

Bob Bowden's avatar

…Or a fan of Dumb And Dumber trying to invite Jeff Daniels.

James Stanley's avatar

Just to add, you meant ppl who are already in your phone's address book, right. Signal doesn't auto-populate the entire user base of Signal. It syncs with your phone's contact list, so at one point Waltz had to have manually entered, or interacted with Goldberg somehow for him to be a contact.

Punkette's avatar

Thanks, James. That makes sense. When I first saw Jeffrey Goldberg interviewed on MSNBC, he seemed quite surprised by Waltz’s invitation and thought it was a scam or a joke. It didn’t sound like they knew each other or had previously been in contact. Strange!

Elizabeth Ellis's avatar

The first thing to cross my mind is that this was a deliberate leak by one of the legitimate invitees. Any guesses?

James Stanley's avatar

Right, Waltz invited him. So Waltz manually entered Goldberg into his contact list while sleepwalking? Or he entered any random number he came up with in his head and assigned it to the local Chinese food joint, and it just happened to be Goldberg's number? One of these assholes was sitting in the Kremlin with his unsecured phone while the emojii's were flying, so Putin was definitely in there lurking around too.

Carol C's avatar

A deliberate leak by a patriotic underling. That’s my optimism showing.

Wendy The Druid 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈🌈's avatar

Cautious Optimism. I think is what you meant to say there.

arne link's avatar

Nah, but we can dream, can't we?

Robert Eckert's avatar

Goldberg says that he got the Signal add-to-contacts request from Waltz a good week before the Houthi group-chat, with no followup at that time. Perhaps Waltz had something he wanted to leak, but then he changed his mind and forgot he had Goldberg added to his contacts list?

Theresa Palmer's avatar

Not to a liberal publication like The Atlantic.

Denise Donaldson's avatar

Excellent point about the French scientist, Linda. I've been wondering that myself. As in, how would they know to examine his personal phone exchanges? Who issued the warrant, if there even was one (betting NOT)? The reading of those exchanges would have had to have been done before he checked in at Passport Control, so how and why would that have been done? Why was the guy singled out? It's all fishy as hell.

Theresa Palmer's avatar

How long now until his life is in danger? Yesterday?

Kay-El's avatar

Yeah, hope he’s got a nice security detail

Stephanie Lajeskie's avatar

Oh don’t you worry! They will. The likes of MTG probably have already decided that a guy with a name like Goldberg had to have bern paid by George Soros to hack his way into the group text. I mean, if we can burn down the California forests with our space lasers, hacking into a text should be easy-peasy. And then, they’ll arrest him for spreading classified information. That is, if Trump’s “patriots” don’t try to get to him first.

Lady Emsworth's avatar

"We're arresting you for spreading classified information we all swore wasn't classified"?

Love THAT paradox!

Patrick Daniels aka Cromulent1's avatar

Signal app is one of the most hacked by foreign governments, per intel reports!!

Zija Pulp's avatar

You’d think one of those numb nuts security folks would have known about Signal’s reputation as being easily hackable! Holy crow!

shee-rah's avatar

They’re all a bunch of incompetents. Trump has outdone himself in choosing such ignorant amateurs this time around.

longtimebirdwatcher's avatar

Classified information??? But yesterday they swore up and down it wasn't classified... They'll admit they were wrong? I can't wait for the DNI to admit that! Let's get some experts to say it should have been classified. You know, former heads of the CIA, Austin, etc.

Patrick Daniels aka Cromulent1's avatar

War plans are always classified Top Secret ltbw… War Plan Red wasn’t declassified for decades!!

Jacqueline Klein's avatar

Haven’t you learned yet? Wearing a red hat made in China, is the best way to spread.the disease of selective amnesia. Somehow Bill Gates and George Soros made amnesia a contagious disease.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

The bizarre part of that whole thing? She's so fucking mind-numbingly stupid she liked, and reposted that meme without even realizing the Rothschilds are Jewish, that's why she said she never said "Jewish space lasers" because she never put the rampant anti-semitism rant together. She thought it was just some conspiracy theory about democrats, so she agreed with it.

Damn it JEFF - I've been saying that since yesterday morning - on your post even! 😏

And you complain about the Wonkette!

Anyway, yes, I hope Jeff Goldberg has some good lawyers lined up.

Outdoorluvr's avatar

Good luck with that, since all the experienced legal firms are getting their balls cut off by trump's executive orders.

Patrick Daniels aka Cromulent1's avatar

Who’s left, that’s going to be brave enough after Donnie’s list of judicial and legal charges Chris!!

Robert Eckert's avatar

The main protection against such prosecutions would be that they would have to persuade twelve jurors.

longtimebirdwatcher's avatar

I think I've been persuaded already, Bob, but who knows what could come up in the trial that could change my mind...

KL Pierce's avatar

That would suck! Goldberg did the right thing here. He could’ve sat on this info and written a book about it later making gobs of money like numerous people in trump one did.

Wendy The Druid 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈🌈's avatar

Sadly, jeff, you are more than right. Its more likely that Goldberg is going to face bullshit more than DrunkSeth and IdiWaltz will ever face any retribution.

Jayme Wolworth's avatar

Goldberg contacted ALL of these agencies yesterday telling them he would be publishing this stream and not one of them got back to him except KKKaroline reiterated to him that Trump said there wasn't any classified info in it so he published. He did his due diligence, and the incompetent Trump admin was too busy to reply and stop him. He's a hero and they are unqualified cosplayers.

Wendy The Druid 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈🌈's avatar

I think you are not wrong about that opinion, Jayme.

Sharon Hudnall's avatar

Hegseth, Trump, Watters at Fox, et al. didn't waste any time blowing the MAGA dog whistles to focus public hostility on Goldberg instead of themselves. It was the second most nauseating spectacle in this shit show., and there were many.

Ole Anderson's avatar

Hegseth and Waltz are both dead men walking. Only shit stains vanity and preening egotism have let them stay this long because he so hates to be proven wrong about his hiring choices. But eventually his own belief in his manufactured tough Boss image will win out and it’s you’re fired time for these two Losers.

arne link's avatar

IDK, it could go either way. He has great love of Hegseth. He is Trump's strong man with bulging biceps and with tears in his eyes meme. Also, he abuses women so that's another point in his favor. I think Drumpf will keep him. We need an office pool...

longtimebirdwatcher's avatar

And don't forget the manly (not gang) tattoos.

Theresa Palmer's avatar

BUT: He doesn't like drinkers and alcohol. So..How to square the circle?

Patrick Daniels aka Cromulent1's avatar

Hate to say this Ole, Trump will rub his hands together and the largest intelligence leak in our history will be washed away!!

Ole Anderson's avatar

I wouldn’t go so far to say this was the largest leak. And it really wasn’t all that sensitive, it’s the fact that these high officials were so cavalier in their broadcast of the chat and that is worrisome because who knows what kind of highly secret data they have been tossing around the past two months.

And now ‘Der Spiegal’ the noted German magazine has reported that they were able to ferret out phone numbers, user names and even passwords of some of the same group , including Gabbard, Waltz and piss drunk Pete himself.

This clown show has turned into a total security meltdown by the gang that couldn’t shoot straight.

Walt Svirsky's avatar

Goldberg saved their asses and, of course, he is the one who’s life will be ruined by them.

Nancy Potter's avatar

Yeah, none of these so-called professionals said, "Hey, do you think maybe we should have this conversation on secure devices or in a SCIF?" Did they want to make sure the record would be destroyed, or is it just their habit to use Signal for everything?

longtimebirdwatcher's avatar

Really? The people on the conversation would have said "What's a SCIF?"

Patrick Daniels aka Cromulent1's avatar

I just learned that Tesla paid $0.00 in federal taxes last year. And received a huge check from the govt for all the carbon credits they got from the big three automakers.

Evidently 43% of Tesla’s income was from selling their carbon credits. It’s another well intentioned idea turned into another scam by the govt. available only to the well connected.

And paid for by Us.

Because the trumpers don't do irony, they really man arrest Goldberg for spreading classified material- even after the blonde creep at the podium stated clearly: NO CLASSIFIED MATERIALS! Between the Mar-a-lago bathroom with all the classified materials (that I still believe he made millions off of selling the info to Putin and others) and the appointment of known Russian asset Tulsi Gabbard, I imagine that not one legitimate government in the world will trust these guys- EVER. In some ways, Europe, Japan, Canada, Australia and other places may be grateful that this happened so early in trump's destruction of the federal government, because they now have incontrovertible proof that they can't trust these guys with information they don't want to share with the world.

Chet Brandt's avatar

Whatever happened to those boxes of documents?

Nancy Braus's avatar

he got lots of cash for letting all the foreign agents into the bathroom at Mar-a-lago, no doubt. Why would he have stolen all those documents if he didn’t want to monetize them?- and that is what he likely did.

I sense the sarcasm as I would reply to them and their “suffering “: sucks to be you mf’er!

Declan's avatar

They know if they can get away with lies like this.....then ANYTHING is possible

Jan Moon's avatar

The problem with liars like these is that they actually believe the lies. There's not one person with integrity in that group of loose cannons and eventually this will get swept the rest of the way under the rug. If they want to go after Goldberg they'll have to admit that the plans were actually transmitted, which, of course, they were. It's such a large number of gaslighters that they should go up in flames. But they won't. Because they won't.

Walt Svirsky's avatar

I’m not so sure they really believe the lies they are telling, Jan. They just live in a MAGATY fantasy space where alternative facts are a way of life.

What if Mitch The Turtle McConnell had done the right thing and voted to impeach the Bloated Yam of Scam? Would we be in the world of shit we are now?

Cheri Collins's avatar

Stop insulting turtles, Walt ! They are wise and wonderful survivors. I am the servant of a very bossy tortoise, and have lived with turtles and torts most of my life. McConnell is lower than slug shit.

Linda McCaughey's avatar

McConnell has done more to destroy actual democracy in this country than anyone I can think of. So proud.

Patrick Daniels aka Cromulent1's avatar

Sadly the cards were already dealt Walt, this would never have ended well!!

Patrick Daniels aka Cromulent1's avatar

The earth’s been shaking beneath our feet since the Demented Dipshit Dictators return Susan!!

Lynn Van Haren's avatar

It won’t. They’ve been lying forever

Charles Austin's avatar

Everything they've said about it is BULLSHIT! Bullshit is all they've got.

Catherine's avatar

Exactly, the gaslighting is infuriating!

George A. Polisner's avatar

I’m at a loss as to why anyone thinks “National Security” is important anymore.

In his first term, the individual the US elevated to “President” had Manafort provide election data to his Russian handler, directed Flynn to subvert President Obama’s sanctions on Russia related to Putin’s annex of Crimea and election interference, shared classified material with the Russian Ambassador, attempted to blackmail an ally, abandoned other allies, and after losing an election incited an attack on Congress while stealing classified materials and storing them in his bathroom.

For his second crime wave he appoints an inexperienced alcoholic Fox News host to be Secretary of Defense, a Russian sympathizer to become the Director of National Intelligence, a Q-Anon conspiracy loon to run the FBI, and “Bribe Me” Barbie to run the DOJ.

And all this while a South African billionaire imbecile has unleashed a team of DOGE treason monkeys on private IRS, Social Security and other systems with previously secure personal information of hundreds of millions of US citizens.

Sure, we care about National Security.

Dave Drell's avatar

You had to mention Manafort! now my day is ruined…

Patrick Daniels aka Cromulent1's avatar

Sad truths George…The moment SCOTUS says that one person is above the law, we no longer have the rule of law.  The moment we no longer have the rule of law, we cease to exist as any kind of republic!!

Kay's avatar

THIS!👆👆👆👆 I have my outlets. One is here every morning! (Today Jeff was late according to my PST read! I wondered if he was “disappeared!”😳) The others are Heather Cox Richardson on Letters from an American on Substack and Colbert and Kimmel. Otherwise I would be crazy or crying nonstop. I can’t get over the fact that we can’t seem to do anything about trump and his goons! He has infected the entire world; our allies in Europe, Ukraine, Panama, Canada, Greenland, Denmark, Mexico. He has his fingers in El Salvador, Venezuela, Yemen, Gaza, Israel and I could go on. Now this! And it will be lied away or investigated to death until it becomes old news because there will be more and more fuck ups to deal with. Nothing will be done. It seems highly unreasonable. Are we heading back to Hitler’s Germany? Or maybe worse?

Kay's avatar

What do we do about that?

Chet Brandt's avatar

Resist in any way one sees possible and hope we don’t have history (1933-1945) repeat itself.

Patrick Daniels aka Cromulent1's avatar

It certainly appears to be the case Kay, our billionaire overlords are seizing the country from our government. The money appropriated by congress is now being funneled into the Uber wealthiest pockets…all “we the serfs can do is to protest and call our duly elected. Unless We the Serfs organize a modern day revolution, our republic is toast!!

Mike Hammer's avatar

Jeff Goldberg’s name can be added to those of Woodward and Bernstein in exposing all the president’s men.

Cassandra Here's avatar

And he published this morning. Link below.

HI2thDoc's avatar

Jeff Goldblum, aware of MAGA’s stupidity and inaccuracy, is now like, “Oh, fuuuuck. . .”

Ole Anderson's avatar

They worked a little bit harder for their accolades, Mike. This was served up to Goldberg. He did do the right thing then.

Irascible Ink's avatar

My comment on Farcebork, where I know a few MAGA family members lurk:

If you haven't figured out yet that these people in charge of keeping the goddamn country safe from all threats, FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC are mind-blowingly incompetent, ask your smartphone-nuk-nukking tween or teen how fucking ignorantly STUPID one has to be to do this, and admit you're in a cult of Breathtaking Dumbassery.

drosophilist's avatar

I wish I could give you an extra like for "Farcebork"

Paula Dean's avatar

Right now, the worst and most damaging group of terrorists ever faced by the US, is actually pretending to be "the Most Patriotic Americans Ever" - AND running the country! -- while they dismantle it, and turn it over to Russia and China.

Irascible Ink's avatar

...and accelerating ever more quickly towards Orwell's "boot stomping on a face, forever" future.

Patrick Daniels aka Cromulent1's avatar

As Malcom Nance said this is largest security breach in the history of our country, Crown Jewels level!

OregonTerry's avatar

Here's a bit from an ex US Army soldier. (Me.)

I was at Fort Monmouth, NJ in 1964, a major crypto teaching Post at the time.

If any one of us had released the type of information that Hegseth gave to Goldberg, we would have been arrested, subjected to a Courts-Martial, convicted, and sent to Leavenworth Kansas.

Paula Dean's avatar

Can we even imagine if this had happened during Obama's or Biden's watch? I can't.

Lynn Van Haren's avatar

We used to know how to deal with espionage. No longer

Maggie&Lefty's avatar

Yup… infuckingcredible!

MargaretT's avatar

The immediate danger from this breach has to be to our military and top officials (at least the ones we can trust), but it I don't think it stops there. The breach has put everyone of us at increased risk.

HI2thDoc's avatar

Everyone involved in that text thread ought to resign or be fired, but we know that will never happen. And yet they made a huge case out of every non-issue during the Obama and Biden administrations. These Putin-loving, incompetent fuckwit trumphumpers are a clear and present danger to our nation and the entire Party of Putin won't stand up for America. Traitors.

Lynn Van Haren's avatar

We used to know what to do with traitors

Carol JLH's avatar

I'd like to order up a gross of cognitive dissonance for these people who aren't self aware enough to see how illogical it is to:

1. Believe Goldberg hacked his way into the bromance happy hour on Signal at the same time they...

2. Insist that Signal is secure enough to be used for strike windows.

Dina's avatar

Just like how all those immigrant people taking everyone's jobs are also sitting around doing nothing while collecting welfare

AND

Joe Biden was so old and sleepy he couldn't do anything when it came to running the country, yet he was this genius evil mastermind who headed up every way possible to take down trump.

TexasBlues's avatar

Talk about “you can’t have it both ways”.

TexasBlues's avatar

Exactly my thoughts!!

David Lehnherr's avatar

I prefer a government that hires competent (and sober) people, that don't have to "learn a lesson" before not endangering our troops or doing something like, oh, say, starting WW III.

Dave Drell's avatar

EXACTLY - competence AND integrity AND honesty. All 3 lacking with these

back-alley rats

SethTriggs's avatar

Oh man, Putin and Xi must be sitting back in bed, smoking a cigarette with a satisfied smile watching this 88-ring circus play out. Just complete clownshoes.

Karen Richards's avatar

I’m sick of the lies. You could see it on Tulsi’s face during questioning.

Walt Svirsky's avatar

She was squirming like a toad on a griddle!

Karen Richards's avatar

Yes she was. Wonder how she feels today!

DonP's avatar

Highly recommend folks go on YouTube and check out the Bulwarks interview/chat with Jeff Goldberg. Quite enlightening.

He actually thought he was being punked or scammed when he got the invite to Signal chat from Walz. And when he was added to the group chat he thought he really WAS being punked.

It's a great insight to how the wannabe mob soldiers are trying to cover up why they were on Signal in the first place.

Which BTW, is because it avoids the LAWS covering retention of government communications.

shee-rah's avatar

It makes you wonder how many times this group (minus Goldberg) has used Signal to discuss intelligence data, and what countries hacked into the conversation.

Greg Conners's avatar

1. Did they think Jeffrey Goldberg was someone else?

2. Who?

3. See you April 5th - already an important date in US history:

HI2thDoc's avatar

Initial denial from Bloated Yam of Scam. which is standard for him: "I don't know anything about that. Never heard of Hooties. They, they, no hits since a long time. Before, they uh, the Blowfish, they did before but not lately. Uh, . . ."

arne link's avatar

OMG! Hootie and the Blowfish? Brilliant.

Cassandra Here's avatar

AAAAAARGH. It’s not just that they included someone in the chat who shouldn’t have been included (Goldberg), it’s that they were using their personal devices on an unsecured platform. Jeffrey Goldberg? They were lucky it was he. We don’t know, yet, who may have intercepted the messages. Tulsi was in India and another was in Moscow. So there ya go.

Lynn Van Haren's avatar

Every hostile country intercepted it!

shee-rah's avatar

I read that the guy in Moscow was inside the Kremlin.
