I've already seen a lot of wishcasting from non-media people, too. The same shit we got in 2016 of "Oh, he won't be that bad, he won't do this or that thing he's said he would, it's gonna be fine, blah blah blah" and you see, I am generally a non-violent person but I would deeply and sincerely like to punch every one of those people in the fuckin teeth.

Most of the people I know in the US are thinking of leaving or in denial and just going about life as usual. When Ronald Reagan was elected I took 2 weeks off just to think about what I wanted to do. I decided to renew my other passport and have made sure since then to keep both of them current. Now I am reading the Journal of Democracy to try to make sense of the world, and it is not going to be coming from the corporate or leftist media. I am going to need to spend some time. Fortunately I have forums like this, and a political discussion group.

One thing I have been hearing is that many who voted for Trump already have buyers remorse. I am not sure how they got clarity that he will be doing things they don't want, and not doing things they do want, but for those who are not homeschooling Christian Nationalists and White Supremacist militia, I think buyers remorse is going to spread the moment the heinous education plans go into effect. That will make parents get active in informing themselves, because there is no way, parents of children with autism are going to want their child's services being farmed out to the Department of Health and Human services as the Department of Education gets defunded and shut down, and then the Department of Health and Human services gets turned into the Department of Life.

Here’s a more than a halfway decent history professor, Dr. Heather Cox Richardson, Boston College, in her new book. I attended one of her discussions on her book tour, and she drew parallels between Germany during the Weimar Republic and the US in the 2020s, as she does in her book.

“In the aftermath of World War II, scholars invested a great deal of energy in trying to explain how, in the 1930s, ordinary Germans whose constitution was one of the most democratic in the world had been persuaded to stand behind a fascist government whose policies led to the destruction of cities, made millions homeless, and then such a shortage of food that Germans were eking by on less than fifteen hundred calories a day.” — Democracy Awakening: Notes on the State of America

Richard Von Busack's avatar

There are certain parallels, and I'm not going to argue with HCR. But there's one thing where you have a population who endured a world war, that hates Jews for insane ancestral reasons, and are facing the kind of inflation that Trump trolls who wail we have had the worst inflation in the history of western civilization absolutely cannot imagine. They bawl like babies about it, but they've never had to haul wheelbarrows of worthless script to the store to buy their precious eggs. Trump is the worst domestic threat since the Civil War, but there are serious differences between Weimar 1932 and the USA in 2024.

Expand full comment
TCinDC's avatar

I agree with you and that's basically what HCR was saying. It's not a one-to-one parallel, but there are enough that warrant our attention.

Their constitution had weaknesses – as ours does – such as Article 48. This allowed the president (Reichspräsident) to bypass the Reichstag and rule by decree in emergencies, which was exploited by leaders like Hindenburg to undermine democratic processes and facilitated Hitler’s rise to power. Article II of our Constitution gives the president broad executive powers, and Trump used them extensively. We can expect as many or more in Trump 2.0.

Our law also confers additional authority on the president, such as the National Emergencies Act of 1976. Trump abused this, but again, we can expect to see more coming. And this time around, I expect to see him wrongly invoke the Insurrection Act, because that's how he gets the military to go after us who march and demonstrate against hm.

The German president had strong powers that reduced checks and balances and allowed for authoritarian governance. It's frightening that just this morning I read this: "Trump, allies signal they will try to call the shots for Republican-led Senate. President-elect Donald Trump on Sunday demanded that the next Senate GOP leader allow him to make appointments to his administration and the courts without Senate approval.

https://wapo.st/3YFBp6V

There go checks and balances.

And now Trump has his Eichmann to round up undocumented immigrants: Tom Homan, whom he called his "border czar." Homan is a dead ringer for Hermann Goering, and will create his own Gestapo to get all those people who have made life so terribly horrible for us.

Trump's political enemies and LGBTQ people are in his crosshairs, too— just like Hitler.

I hope that we can organize a serious resistance and claim back our democracy, but with fewer guardrails around him, Trump is going to do some serious hurt to it.

I'm really upset with people like Nancy Pelosi going to the media and blaming Biden. They should be really ashamed of themselves for beating up on someone who has served for 50 years, sometimes at great personal sacrifice. The people who voted for Trump are completely disconnected from reality. They won't listen to facts. They believe everything he says. Democrats didn't have a chance. Until the media, who is completely disconnected from the average person, changes their menu, it will not change. We must make the truth as exciting as conspiracy theories.

I'm even more disappointed by Bernie Sanders. They're BOTH pointing fingers at fellow Democrats instead of the real culprits - MAGA MEDIA and Russian interference.

Expand full comment
Anita Smibert's avatar

Exactly. It's the disinformation that they don't fully understand. There's another thing too. Many Democrats were really upset about the way they publicly humiliated Biden, instead of trying to explain his poor debate performance. I could see at the Juneteenth celebration that he was exhausted. Did media talk about that, or the fact that he had a cold, or Trump hit him with a blizzard of lies? Nope. Because of Robert Hur's report, they went straight to dementia. Democrats have got to learn how to message. They are horrible at it. They don't know when to do an attack ad instead of a positive message. Many other Democrats were mad because she wasn't on a primary ballot (even though she was the running mate of the incumbent). Others said someone should have run against him in the primary. I pointed out that Dean Phillips and RFK Jr ran against him in the primary. People don't pay attention. Then after the election, they see the mistakes when it's too late.

Now they're saying he shouldn't run. After they held off a red wave and kept the Senate in 2022. If they would have shut up and given him a couple of days to rest instead of publicly bashing him, it might have helped. But they were living by the polls. The problem is the disconnect of the public that believes Republicans are better for them. They have to learn the hard way.

I agree. The Dems are going the wrong way in blaming Biden. That he stepped aside is commendable. That he is a very good President iMHO remains. I add, Harris ran a good campaign. The reality is the body politic. We can blame gerrymandering to a point. We can blame disinformation to a point. But both found a home in too many Americans. What we still have are States and communities who don’t buy the vacuous MAGA content. Who value clean air and diversity. We Dems lost an election, not our soul.

Biden was wrong to think that the USofA

would desire a 82 yr old presidente - and be 86 (if still alive) when term ended.

That’s egotistical. He should have stepped aside in a January and let the party elect a candidate during the primaries.

He would have stepped aside after the election. He's the only one who ever beat Donald Trump. Guess what. HE STILL IS. It's because young people just believe if you're over 65 your brain turns to tapioca. Yet there are generations of them who get their information from sources that are laughable. Biden can still teach a master class behind closed doors. You're forgetting that he's got a disability and that's always a liability in the public eyes. He was condemned by people who don't pay any attention to his press conference and watch edited videos on TikTok.

Am I getting this wrong? I thought the success of our democracy relied, in part, on having the three branches of our government act as checks on one another. Well he now quite literally “owns” the executive, judicial and (both chambers of) the legislative branch. Any of the lower courts’ decisions will be overridden by SCOTUS. The republican majority in Congress will never defy him. And the executive branch is stacked with mega donors and loyalists. I wish I felt one shred of optimism, but I don’t. The numbness, sadness and fear I’ve felt all week are starting to give way to white hot rage.

Yeah, it's being said there may be some check at the state level & some hope still in the populace, but the populace has proven to be so malleable & fickle, I don't see it. I initially was somewhat optimistic because there was a lot of work to be done regardless of this election, but now I'm not. No amount of work on the part of some can undo the destruction of others & all I feel now is rage, homicidal rage over being put in a position of having to live in fear. I haven't come through all I have in life for this. Many of us feel as you do, this degradation of lives is unacceptable.

I've tried and tried but I cannot imagine how, when you have sworn to ensure that the laws are faithfully obeyed, a lawless act can be considered an official duty. Not the least bit lame. The Orange Turd has big plans for our Social Security, and they don’t include our survival. Mine already doesn’t cover expenses. Just figure that the Turd’s dementia is accelerating rapidly. I remember from my adoptive mother’s descent into both dementia and insanity (thankful for different gene pool) an estimate of seven years from diagnosis to end. She was kind of nuts before though. The rest of the Rethuglicans surely already have plans for that time, but he will have plenty of time to wreak hell on us.

Two days ago my thirty-some year old neighbor told me she voted in protest for Stein, cause Harris was a fascist but Stein is pro democracy and is "Green". She said Trump winning is good as we need to learn a lesson. Then said Trump will protect Gaza better. You could have easily imagined me as a country preacher, standing in a wooden box, on the lonely country road as I ran through a couple dozen reasons why Trump is going to be horrible, which I won't bother writing here as it would take several pages and you all know it anyway.

The level of denialism and ignorance is astounding. This young woman doesn't give two hoots for democracy. She comes from wealth, so I guess the leopards won't eat her face?!

American renewal is "your body, my choice", or texting black students to pick cotton? Here's the thing. None of the Trump cult pays attention to the NY Times and Washington Post or CNN. He convinced them a long time ago that they were "Fake News". Some of us recognized that as right out of Fascism for Dummies. But that sent his admirers diving straight into the shark tank of disinformation. That's why they're totally separated from reality. They must learn by experience. I am reading pieces from the Journal of Democracy to try to make some sense of this and figure out where I can should put my energies. I am 100% in agreement that the corporate, social and leftist media provided so much disinformation that Trump got in. The left was so busy tearing Harris and Biden apart they did not have time to investigate Trump. The Lever did in the end, and I wrote many complaints to them, labeled as Master Plan. At least they told me that was them writing about Project 2025. It would have been helpful if they had named it such.

I am also skeptical about what Putin's role is in Donnie feeling so sure that he already had the votes. What was that? A man who is excellent at spycraft and espionage is telling Donny that things will be okay through his go between Musk, and we don't really know what happened and may never know.
