George in Atlanta's avatar

It's not mind boggling. It's on-brand. I'd be all upset if they were successfully getting us to clutch our pearls at every escalated performative atrocity. Except it's becoming less effective (but not completely yet, so they have to keep upping their cruelty game). They're bellowing at us as if we're to be cowed into submission, yet the larger response is "meh, fuck you". ICE goons were asked to check right back out from the Pasadena hotels they'd just moved into. Seems the locals got a little steamed at having the Nazi cosplayers amongst them. And Tom Homan is gonna, what, burn the hotels down? Arrest everybody in Pasadena? What a useless tool.

Read the room. What are we seeing from them? Incoherent explosions of impotent rage from the SecDef. Epic, fully-network-covered humiliation of the President at his Birthday Parade. A performative and strategically pointless bombing raid. And now a tent city slapped up in the Everglades, custom-designed to clutch pearls. See a pattern? Do they look like people at the top of their game? Masters Of The Universe who will certainly enslave us all ?

Do I know how this is going to go? No, of course not. And neither does anyone else. We've been unmoored from reality so long that all the teeth-gnashing and cloth-rending gets out of date pretty quick. It tells me that what we thought was reality, was not really, they were just comfortable fictions we told ourselves and each other to get through the day. So, in the meantime: Meh, fuck 'em.

Expand full comment
J.R.'s avatar

My son is an attorney. I told him the same thing. They will be prosecuted in The Hague for crimes against humanity.

Expand full comment
George in Atlanta's avatar

There may be trials, but I doubt at the Hague. The US has no history of abdicating it's sovereignty and does not support the ICC. It all depends on how much blood is spilled between now and then.

As it stands, their crimes are mainly against the Constitution, and at an unprecedented scale. If the rubes get what they say they want (actually haven't heard much on this lately), a civil war, and there is a genocide, then all bets will be off. In that case, the United States will be a failed state and would likely be under the stewardship of our former allies (if we're lucky). In that case, then our own legal precedents will be moot and an ICC or similar action could be executed under the supervision of other nations.

If, however, we manage to navigate through this relatively bloodlessly, then I think the scenario could ultimately unfold similar to the 'Truth and Reconciliation Commissions' in South Africa. If it came to that, the vast scale of culpability (77 million citizens who supported Trump) would require some mechanism to heal the society and have it reform around unifying ideas of justice.

One day in the future, when all of this nightmare has vanished from the earth, it should call out for something equivalent to the Nuremberg trials, with the leading traitors being held accounted. Don't even think about Donny, Vance, and Miller appearing at it, as they will all have killed themselves by then, although talking about Donny, he would definitely be too much of a coward to do so, but then Melania will be happy to help him with it. As for the rest, most of them will plead not guilty, and hope for being pardoned by some kind of law magically instituted by King Donny in advance during his regime.

Probably the same kind of lesson that more than half of the German population had to go through after the end of World War II.

Ok, so do you have a sense for the why and how on that? Trump has had umpty-ump rulings against him, yet cases of his actual defiance of an order have been nil. Why?

I don't think we understand enough about how it all works, there seem to be mechanisms that aren't immediately visible, leading to paradoxes:

1. The situation above

2. Trump is barking mad, by all accounts, why hasn't he nuked anything? Isn't he the Supreme Commander and can unilaterally act against a 'clear and present danger' to the country (in his view)?

3. Why were Gavin Newsom and Karen Bass not arrested on federal charges? As they say, you can indict a ham sandwich if you want to.

4. Why did they never even prosecute Hillary?

5. What specific things will trigger a TACO?

We need to understand what stops Trump so we can get more of it.

You are correct, of course. I got out over my skis on that one. Nil isn't the right word to use. My question stands, though, what *does* stay his hand and why? What possible repercussions does he fear that prevents him from going further than he has? How many TACOs have occurred that we don't even know about?

The question is not so much about Trump, I think what we see is what we get. It's the processes and people in place that are having effects on his behavior, that we can't see and don't understand.

DeSantis is something else again, worthy of another discussion. Li'l White Boots is dealing in a whole different reality down there.

Me too. Unfortunately MAGA has a tremendous tolerance for cruelty. It's the best tolerance ever, no one has ever seen anything like it. Big strong men come up to them, tears streaming down their faces, and say "How do you do it? No one has ever been as joyfully cruel as you. Thank you so much."

Will it though? Unfortunately, it took outside powers to take down the Third Reich. No one is coming to rescue us from ourselves. Today I woke up and thought: they’re just going to let us do our monthly protests and share our pain and outrage online and go along their merry way destroying our lives. Do we have the numbers and commitment to do what’s necessary to bring this all down? I mean put it ALL on the line. I’m increasingly and sadly thinking not.

You are utterly on target here. And yet. People who are under complete and locked-down totalitarian regimes STILL come out to give their Supreme Masters a hearty Fuck You Very Much. Hungarians. Russians. People who have some experience with this for real.

We're newbies at this whole being oppressed thing, and still trying to get our footing, so give us a break. And on the other hand, dictatorships with staying power have a mastermind diabolical genius for organization and a crack bureaucratic machine at their fingertips. What have we got? Be honest. The performative stunts the regime is staging are becoming more rickety by the minute. The Parade, the pointless bombing mission, and now a tent city slapped up and marketed with T-shirts. Does Hegseth look like he's at the top of his game? He's screaming incoherently at press conferences, panicking to paint any criticism as "disloyalty to the troops". Yet, nobody's having it.

How will all this go? Shit, I have no idea. But so far, it sure hasn't been following a straight line, and the regime isn't looking stronger, but the opposite.

WTF? Maybe Alligator Auschwitz or Crocodile Concentration Camp would be better names. Alcatraz was a prison for convicted criminals, gangsters, etc. This is a literally concentration camp for people apprehended without due process until the government decides what to do with them. There is no analogy to Alcatraz. Auschwitz was established as a concentration camp. We need to stop accepting the administration’s deceptive branding and refer to this as Alligator Auschwitz or Crocodile Concentration Camp.

On the brighter side, at least Kkkaroline recognizes that this alien detention camp is illegal.

Far be it for me to sound like an apologist for the Germans during the Nazi era, but the actual Nazis were afraid of a public outcry over their handling of Jews, Roma, Sinti, disabled people and dissidents, so did not publicize, and located the worst of their horrors - the death camps - in foreign countries.

Congratulations, Amerika, you are out-Nazi-ing the original Nazis.

I asked my mom (born in 1926) why the Allies didn't do something about the camps in WWII. She said they didn't advertise them or publicly talk about them. This of course was before social media, TV and satellite spy cameras. Your post is 100% right about the difference.

Expand full comment
Stephen Schiff's avatar

Yes, that is true: the allied public was kept in the dark. However, through a heroic effort, some few escapees from the death camps were able to get the word out to allied leaders, who decided in their infinite wisdom to a) keep it secret; and b) that diverting a few bombers to take out the rail lines to the camps would deter them from bombing schools, hospitals and museums in German cities. /s

My mom said that they would go to the movie theater and see reels of the news about the war. No TV or computers then. So the news they got was old anyway. You know some people knew.
