Last night there was a film set in the '50s, about two young hoods bullying and terrorizing a whole subway car full of working-class people late at night. There were at least 7 male passengers, at 4 four young and able-bodied. At the beginning of the movie, it was shown that the two thugs wouldn't hesitate to kill for sport, and that one of them had a knife. But the passengers didn’t know those details. The thugs spewed every racist, bigoted, misogynist taunt and insult they could think of. And only one woman and two older guys dared to stand up to them. ALL the other people, at least a dozen, just sat and watched in horror. It was so intense and vicious, the only reason I kept watching was to see if the thugs got what was coming to them (they did, and it was ugly).
And I couldn't help but compare that scenario with the minority MAGAs who are terrorizing the country.
Programming note: the previous movie had been about Jackie Robinson's early years, and all the racism he endured in the Army.
If there's an agenda behind the scheduling, TCM has at least established plausible deniability: "It was Ruby Dee night."

I'VE noticed lately that some of the programming my husband is addicted to (reruns of CSI-Miami, CSI-NY, old Law & Order shows) 'seem' to be running very, very, VERY relevant episodes to our current crises. Most of the CSI shows ran from early 2000's to 2014? It's a new Dish channel called Charge TV which will soon run Homicide, Life on the Streets (my all-time favourite cop show - set in Baltimore) and never rerun before. SO many episodes lately: attacks on migrants, racism, chemicals in water supplies, women leaders from other countries attacked for speaking of freedom; abortion rights, etc. It seems all too coincidental to BE merely coincidental. I don't believe in coincidences anyway.
I don't believe in coicidences, either. I find it depressing that so many of the Law & Order shows from 30 years ago, for instance, center on topics that are still issues today. Goes to show that we haven't made as much progress as we think we have, and we're more deeply messed up as a country than many people think we are.

And cards and calls and emails. Why? Because people like Barney heard from corporations via their lobbyists every day, on the phone and in person. Constituents almost never reached out, unless they were very upset about some issue or event. Times have changed, as one knows from reports that repugnicans try to avoid their constituents and sometimes don't respond to them at all, unless they are mocking them or lecturing them in a condescending manner. Some Dems might be doing that, too?
If enough of us contact our Congress critters and our State gov't critters about what matters to us, it might make a difference. If we never try, we already know what that will look like. If you're already writing to yours, bravo/brava! And if they ignore you, send a copy of your letters to local news places and request that they print them for other readers. Today that might be substacks, blogs, and real nooz sites, but maybe they'll do it if you ask?

I know he has some detractors here, but MY Senator Charles (Chuck) Schumer has Always, always, always responded within a day or so to every single letter, email I'VE sent to him requesting info or stating my POV. While it's partially a form letter, he includes info pertinent to my request AND the letter is always personalized (a nice touch). He usually covers far more than requested and suggests other upcoming bills I might find of interest. On the other hand, Kristen Gillibrand, ALSO a Democratic Senator from NY whom I've sent emails, letters to responds (usually a month or two later) with a form letter paragraph with zero relevance to my request. Not ONCE has she addressed the topic. I've been long-since disillusioned by her and despite others' attitude towards Schumer, still appreciate him.

personally I like letters. they are fun to write and mail. I suppose it's mostly email and phone calls these days though that they pay attention to.
Back in Barney Frank's day serving MA in the US House of Reps (the 00's through 2013), he tried to tell constituents that it mattered to Congress critters when they got letters. And cards and calls and emails. Why? Because people like Barney heard from corporations via their lobbyists every day, on the phone and in person. Constituents almost never reached out, unless they were very upset about some issue or event. Times have changed, as one knows from reports that repugnicans try to avoid their constituents and sometimes don't respond to them at all, unless they are mocking them or lecturing them in a condescending manner. Some Dems might be doing that, too?
If enough of us contact our Congress critters and our State gov't critters about what matters to us, it might make a difference. If we never try, we already know what that will look like. If you're already writing to yours, bravo/brava! And if they ignore you, send a copy of your letters to local news places and request that they print them for other readers. Today that might be substacks, blogs, and real nooz sites, but maybe they'll do it if you ask?

I know he has some detractors here, but MY Senator Charles (Chuck) Schumer has Always, always, always responded within a day or so to every single letter, email I'VE sent to him requesting info or stating my POV. While it's partially a form letter, he includes info pertinent to my request AND the letter is always personalized (a nice touch). He usually covers far more than requested and suggests other upcoming bills I might find of interest. On the other hand, Kristen Gillibrand, ALSO a Democratic Senator from NY whom I've sent emails, letters to responds (usually a month or two later) with a form letter paragraph with zero relevance to my request. Not ONCE has she addressed the topic. I've been long-since disillusioned by her and despite others' attitude towards Schumer, still appreciate him.

I think letters are great as well. Anything really to show that we are not complicit and will not be quiet. Fax is good too because it requires extra work. You could write a letter, then fax it (faxzero.com allows for 5 free faxes a day and can be sent from a phone!)
