Mary, I'm an older guy as well. For the last three decades I've been hammering the notion that we need the young bloods' new ideas. There are many younger people who have stepped up recently (Mamdani, AOC et al) who have fresh ideas and energy. We owe them and their generation bequeathing the legacy handed down by our parents and grandparents.
I am also reasonably intelligent and old, and I am not fit for a military position managing a drone war that is for sure. In fact, I am decoupling from US Big Tech, and it is very hard to do. Not just because I have information in the US big tech system that I need for legal purposes, but also because I have to learn to use new tech.
I am making myself do this though, but it makes me appreciate the difficulties with people being in charge who only know how to do war the old way, and cannot imagine what planning for warfare in the way that Ukraine and Iran are doing.
Ukraine is a marginally older population than Russia, and a lot of that is because so many of their youth left. However, being more democratic they have a more uniformly better educated population which is an advantage in their military. A lot of their soldiers have tech skills already.
The US is getting rid of having a well educated population and also getting rid of age diversity and swinging more heavily towards old white people as you have said. If racists are fighting wars against peoples whom they are racist against, they will always underestimate them.
I am 71 If I have to travel on an airplane anywhere, even if am in business class and someone carts me to my next gate, I am exhausted for a week afterwards. I just mowed my lawn but I don't feel like doing much else now. I seem to have a little ADD going on in my head and have trouble staying fully on task. But I don't care. It will get done eventually, or not, and we will still carry on.. I think 67 is good. It's full retirement for SS. After two terms, assuming that happens, they would be out by 75. Still too old but if voters were smarter it wouldn't matter, because they could math .
Completing a task at my age (it's my VERY OLD birthday today) seems to be beyond my range of abilities. And I believe we should weed out everyone in government who no longer can get their pea brains away from political donations and cannot find the camel and is beyond a 6 as the first digit of their ages should be politely (or not) ushered away from Capitol Hill. Again, it depends. I am older than 71. Yesterday I spent 6+ hours on my feet at Pride, including walking the entire parade and shooting the main stage acts for 3 hours. Today I worked on our farm for three hours, then went downtown for an outdoor fashion show and stood up for a couple more hours. I also do not live on fast food (never eaten at McDonalds) and "the most beautiful piece of chocolate cake" that is twice the size of everyone else's, I do not believe exercise should be avoided because it shortens your life span, and I do no order a golf cart if I have to go more than ten feet. So I am in much better shape in all respects than Donald Trump. I can even identify a camel!

My brain is sharp, and I am fit, but I want the next 2 generations to be those in leadership- they will be living with the long term consequences of their actions, not me. I’ve been to Europe 3 times since this regime has been in place, most recent one being in April. We talked to 2 women from Ireland (while we were in Belgium) about all of it. They hate him, but had no blame for us personally, as they could tell I was not on board with what is happening. I told them I am still very sorry for how it is affecting Europe, and they hope we have a good result in November.

I share your concern. I am an American immigrant in Portugal and I fear the same thing. I post almost daily shit about Donnie. Went back last December for a Christmas visit with family and sailed right through Customs in Austin, TX. I still fear the next time I go through. My big extended family on my husband's side is planning to go to Guam next March because my mother-in-law, now passed, was from there and there's a desire to make sure our kids understand this part of their heritage. Guam is a US territory, but if our flights take us through another country, like Japan, I'll have to go through US customs upon return. I'm becoming increasingly concerned at how image-oriented those of us on the left are, when some of our older politicians such as Sheldon Whitehouse, Mazie Hirono, Ed Markey and Liz Warren are doing an amazing job of fighting got us. I also see us falling for some very shiny, high unqualified potential presidential candidates who shouldn't even be on the list and no, "better than Trump" isn't a qualification. Every commenter here can probably clear that bar.
Mary, I'm an older guy as well. For the last three decades I've been hammering the notion that we need the young bloods' new ideas. There are many younger people who have stepped up recently (Mamdani, AOC et al) who have fresh ideas and energy. We owe them and their generation bequeathing the legacy handed down by our parents and grandparents.
I am also reasonably intelligent and old, and I am not fit for a military position managing a drone war that is for sure. In fact, I am decoupling from US Big Tech, and it is very hard to do. Not just because I have information in the US big tech system that I need for legal purposes, but also because I have to learn to use new tech.
I am making myself do this though, but it makes me appreciate the difficulties with people being in charge who only know how to do war the old way, and cannot imagine what planning for warfare in the way that Ukraine and Iran are doing.
Ukraine is a marginally older population than Russia, and a lot of that is because so many of their youth left. However, being more democratic they have a more uniformly better educated population which is an advantage in their military. A lot of their soldiers have tech skills already.
The US is getting rid of having a well educated population and also getting rid of age diversity and swinging more heavily towards old white people as you have said. If racists are fighting wars against peoples whom they are racist against, they will always underestimate them.

I am 71 If I have to travel on an airplane anywhere, even if am in business class and someone carts me to my next gate, I am exhausted for a week afterwards. I just mowed my lawn but I don't feel like doing much else now. I seem to have a little ADD going on in my head and have trouble staying fully on task. But I don't care. It will get done eventually, or not, and we will still carry on.. I think 67 is good. It's full retirement for SS. After two terms, assuming that happens, they would be out by 75. Still too old but if voters were smarter it wouldn't matter, because they could math .
Completing a task at my age (it's my VERY OLD birthday today) seems to be beyond my range of abilities. And I believe we should weed out everyone in government who no longer can get their pea brains away from political donations and cannot find the camel and is beyond a 6 as the first digit of their ages should be politely (or not) ushered away from Capitol Hill. By any means necessary.

Again, it depends. I am older than 71. Yesterday I spent 6+ hours on my feet at Pride, including walking the entire parade and shooting the main stage acts for 3 hours. Today I worked on our farm for three hours, then went downtown for an outdoor fashion show and stood up for a couple more hours. I also do not live on fast food (never eaten at McDonalds) and "the most beautiful piece of chocolate cake" that is twice the size of everyone else's, I do not believe exercise should be avoided because it shortens your life span, and I do no order a golf cart if I have to go more than ten feet. So I am in much better shape in all respects than Donald Trump. I can even identify a camel!
Agreed- I am 72 and never had a health problem until these fascists came on the scene. My brain is sharp, and I am fit, but I want the next 2 generations to be those in leadership- they will be living with the long term consequences of their actions, not me. I’ve been to Europe 3 times since this regime has been in place, most recent one being in April. We talked to 2 women from Ireland (while we were in Belgium) about all of it. They hate him, but had no blame for us personally, as they could tell I was not on board with what is happening. I told them I am still very sorry for how it is affecting Europe, and they hope we have a good result in November.
Those who travel there need to keep our heads down and not be obnoxious and wear maga merch. But we have never been treated badly, even tho I would not be surprised if we were.
As embarrassed and horrified as I am at how our country is affecting the rest of the world, the worst feeling has been meeting my daughter’s friend whose husband was deported recently even tho here legally. We both cried. I needed her to know that not all old white women are ok with what has happened to her family. It doesn’t help her situation, but how must it feel to be in her position, and wonder about who around her is fine with it all. She is very brave.
I'm not afraid of leaving the US. I've been to enough countries and know the words for "Hi," "Please," "Thank you," and "Where's the bathroom?" in enough of them so that I know that they and a big American grin will take me almost anywhere. It's coming back IN to the US through Customs that I'm afraid of. I've written a lot of shit about Trump, and I know that the internet is forever. I worry that some Customs guy will go through my phone or that I'm in a list somewhere.
I share your concern. I am an American immigrant in Portugal and I fear the same thing. I post almost daily shit about Donnie. Went back last December for a Christmas visit with family and sailed right through Customs in Austin, TX. I still fear the next time I go through. However, to stay silent is to be complicit and I refuse.

My big extended family on my husband's side is planning to go to Guam next March because my mother-in-law, now passed, was from there and there's a desire to make sure our kids understand this part of their heritage. I've told my sister-in-law that I can't go, for the reasons described above. Guam is a US territory, but if our flights take us through another country, like Japan, I'll have to go through US customs upon return. I really don't want to miss this family trip, though, so I'm thinking about making sure I go through Hawai'i instead and praying that nothing gets re-routed.

I feel the same Stephen. Did you see that one of Elon’s baby mamas is spilling the beans. She says he rigged that election by somehow manipulating the machines. Apparently the company that controls 70% of the machines is now Trump friendly. Apparently there were a lot of votes cast where Trump was selected for president and all the down ballot votes were for democrats and this was in the swing states. If this is true and it happens again I hope they contest it. It looks like Trump wins by enough to not trigger a recount. This could all be fiction but I watched a video by the gal and it seemed legit. Maybe Kamala did actually win.
A few months after the election, I was talking about how awful Trump was, and somebody close to me said, "It's your (collective) fault for running such a bad candidate!" He's lucky I still call him a friend.
