I gotta say, the issue with writing about Iran is that the situation changes from hour to hour. at least half of what I wrote about yesterday morning was no longer applicable by yesterday afternoon. oh well, one can only play the hand one is dealt

Marian Vitale's avatar

It's the world's worst game of whack-a-mole.

Claudia Classon's avatar

Whack-a-mole is the perfect description. The Democrats don’t know what to hit next. We’re all spinning around in circles with our whacking hammers.

Mary Hall's avatar

House Rethuglicans won't allow the Dem's War Powers bill to come up for a vote. They are the worst fking enemy this country has ever had.

DJ Headthrob's avatar

If history has taught us anything it's that the Democrats will end-up whacking themselves--early and often.

Will's avatar

That’s exclusive to Democrats? Democrats could whack themselves a million times and the voting assignment would still be clear.

DuduLovesBubu's avatar

I tend to think they're all whacking off.

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

B.s. It absolutely astounds me how Trump is fucking upon the world and some people punt to "Democrats suck." Every time you do that you give Trump more power. Sheesh.

Lorraine Parish's avatar

Right. WTF. Get on board or get the fuck off

Will's avatar

A lot of troll bots, and unfortunately some people do believe their narratives and repeat them. One theme they all have in common is this: "Give up. It's no use. Resistance is futile."

Susanna J. Sturgis's avatar

You're probably thinking mostly of the white ones, right?

Barbara Ferrara's avatar

Not just the Democrats, the Republicans also don't know what to hit next.... if they're even paying attention that is

Claudia Classon's avatar

I think they are too busy running away—from the mess in Washington, from dealing with their constituents, from doing their JOBS.

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

"Democrats" aren't running away: Liddle Mikey has the House in recess because he's petrified of anything happening that could upset Trump. My congresswoman is back in the district, meeting with constituents, holding a small business forum, and having a big voter rally featuring all the statewide candidates, including our candidate for governor and U.S. Senator, which would be flips. I wish people would get off this "Democrats suck" tear.

Lorraine Parish's avatar

Me too. The ones who do this are the dems who hurt the party

A.J. Madison's avatar

For a second I thought you wrote that the Democrats were whacking off with hammers. Which is about right for the likes of Chuckie Schumer.

HI2thDoc's avatar

The media should be at least challenging the blatant lies. But they are falling short

Michael Johnson's avatar

I am apoplectic due to the media virtually ignoring the significance of the Vice President of the United States flying over to Budapest to support an obvious fascist who will likely STEAL his upcoming election. The far right has been fawning over Orban for many years, sure, but that should make it no less outrageous. WTAF?

Robert Eckert's avatar

elseweb: "What is the Vice President doing, interfering with a foreign election? Isn't that the CIA's job?"

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

I am apoplectic at the media in general which is why I send my money to people like Jeff Tiedrich, Aaron Parnas and Andy Borowitz and not The NY Times. Can you even imagine the tidal wave of howling if Joe Biden has said he wanted to wipe out an entire civilization? We would never have heard the end of it, and he'd have been out of office by the end of this week.

Mary Hall's avatar

Thom Hartmann just announced that T💩p has added Vladamir Putin's photograph to the Hall of Presidents. Clearly, T💩p is a double agent. He needs to be arrested for treason, among a bazillion other things.

DebJS's avatar

?!?! If you look at everything Dump does with the lens that it's for the benefit of Putin it always makes sense if you connect the dots. Patel firing everyone who investigated trump classified docs case just days before the bombing of Iran? - Check (one example). When the Dems regain control of the House and Senate they should investigate all of those connections.

Unity In Defiance's avatar

I feel it’s less a writing issue and more a reality meeting propaganda issue.

But that’s what happens when you have the Inept Wing announcing all their fascist dreams and then they spin around stepping on the rakes of reality — which is what all of us NOT drunk on the MAGA koolaid are witnessing in real time.

Pam Humphrey's avatar

Stepping on “the rakes of reality?” Brilliant!!!

HI2thDoc's avatar

Goes to show that stupidity changes things much more quickly than rationality

Will's avatar

You can break things overnight, but it takes years to fix them.

Will's avatar

I think that’s exactly the problem the Democrats have had. Implement positive change? Fuck, every election cycle it’s putting out one fire after another.

Susanna J. Sturgis's avatar

Excellent point -- and it goes back at least to the stock market crash of 1929. The FDR administration was making headway on that, but then Hitler, Mussolini, and Franco intervened.

Maui Wahine's avatar

I think it was Timothy Snyder who said itʻs easy to start a war but hard to stop one.

Will's avatar

... which is an incredible advantage for the forces of chaos -- i.e., Greedy Old Party. We really need bigger numbers. About 60 million eligible voters sat out the 2024 election.

Denise Donaldson's avatar

IMO, we don't know that. With all the GOP dirty tricks of secretly purging voter rolls, caging ballots, insisting on provisional ballots that were then tossed because reasons, and possibly [probably] Musk's thumb on the scale, I contend that we don't know what actually happened last time.

Will's avatar
Apr 10Edited

I think we’re talking about two different topics: voter turnout vs. voter suppression. If you think they purged 60 million votes, then it’s the same topic. Who knows, maybe they did, but I’d like to believe that it’s too many votes to purge, and that a huge voter turnout would flip things in favor of democrats — even with votes being purged.

DJ Headthrob's avatar

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

Bibi should be sharing a prison cell with Trump. Way overdue.

Mirla G. Raz's avatar

Hezbollah is sending bombs into Israel. One was just intercepted heading to Tel-Aviv.

I saw a report Tuesday evening that said Israel had no intention of ceasing attacks on Lebanon. It seems that somehow, there was a miscommunication. What are the odds???

Robert Eckert's avatar

Linda Weide's avatar

Jeff, that is exactly what Prof. Sadegh Noroozi, from Iran, who is a lecturer at Constructor University in Bremen, Germany, said at our No Kings Rally on March 28. He was telling us that he could not believe that one man is allowed to do whatever he wants, and why people would vote for him. He was referring to Trump, but did not say his name. He did tell us that his speech was outdated because each moment the situation was changing. He had woken up to 2 steel plants being bombed and he knew that represented thousands of people who worked there. He also said they constantly have to worry about family and friends. We really got the sense of chaos that this war was wreaking on the lives of Iranians who do not live in Iran and could only imagine what it is like for people inside Iran, many of whom are being executed by their own government while the war is going on because there is now no one coming to rescue them as Trump had promised.

I have been following the war coverage with Malcolm Nance, Jacob Kaarsbo, and Wajeed Lion, most days. They do a daily war show applying their expertise to interpret what is going on, which we cannot count on our government to do.

DJ Headthrob's avatar

And, with that in mind, Trump is NOT playing 3-D Chess. More like 52-Pick-Up. Or Slapjack.

Vee Cross's avatar

You've got me wondering if part of the problem with MSM is they don't know how to cover up to the minute news. For years they've had a plan, laid it out, followed the formula and collected the financial rewards. Now they've got an ever-changing mass of weirdness and don't know how to report on demand. They've grown soft through corporate ownership and journalistic integrity, which includes being on top of things, took a powder.

The baseline issue is dealing with a situation where the controlling factor is chaos, created by Fronto Temporal Dementia (FTD), a progressive neurodegenerative disease, causing abnormal protein buildup, which shrinks the brain's frontal and temporal lobe,

resulting in profound personality changes, behavioral issues, and language difficulties rather than early memory loss.

I would pay for some memory loss.

FTD=ETTD.

He is the VP and is entitled to use the flag. What offended me was that he was CAMPAIGNING for a foreign leader, particularly one as odious as Orban. American officials should not be politicking in foreign campaigns.

Susan P Thatcher's avatar

I understand what you're saying. The way I interpret a highly placed politician standing in front of an American flag is that he is representing the US in what he is doing. As you point out, actively campaigning for a foreign leader is wrong, and especially, as you say, Orban.

The way journalists and news anchors discuss utter batshit craziness as if it’s to be seriously discussed as newsworthy or worth consideration makes me think I’m going insane. Yes--the Doge monkeys hammering away at their keyboards, the firing of all experts prior to attacking Iran, the increasing threats to leave NATO, etc., etc.: all of it is in obedience to Putin's orders. It all makes perfect sense when you don't look for any sense to it, because the goal is the fall of the US. It's not as if Putin ever hid HIS agenda to collapse the US economy, disable the US military, eliminate NATO, and turn the US into a puppet state of Russia. He's doing a great job!

Remember the Twilight Zone Episode "It's a Good Life" where an entire town is held captive by an amoral six-year-old deity who can erase them with a thought? Send them to the cornfield, kill their dog, whatever?

We've often seen Trump compared to Billy Muny ("YOU'RE A BAD MAN!") but what we see now is even weirder. In this scenario Billy is just an ordinary brat, but the adults decide to behave as if he’s omnipotent anyway, enforcing the cult rules on each other.

The entire town would rather pretend a child is a god than admit they’ve built their entire social order on make-believe.

Anthony doesn’t have to read minds or bend reality; he just has to throw tantrums while every grown-up around him whispers “think happy thoughts” and calls that “keeping the peace.”

Everybody sees it now, and people are dying because of it.

Frank Nuts's avatar

Good analogy J Hardy! I’ve been trying to get my wife to send trump to the cornfield; but, so far , it hasn’t happened.

She once baked a cake that I took to my parents. My dad, who had been a wonderful man his whole life, got a wild hair up his ass and decided to be mean to my new wife. I took the cake to my parents without her pre approval and she was not happy about it. She said: “I hope he chokes on it”. And, indeed, he took one bite and started choking. She has mad skills I’m telling you. I’ve just got to get her in the right mood then maybe…

George A. Polisner's avatar

Thank you Jeff.

An important reminder that unless the pedo criminal elect detects a self-enrichment opportunity then all he hears is "blah blah blah, quack quack".

If you really want him to hone in on the ceasefire terms, or any negotiation, words like "We're buying Trump (Crypto, shoes, phones, 10 or more stays at a resort)" become important. Also, giving him a trophy helps. Transferring a billion USD to his offshore account, oops, I mean "Board of Peace" will also create moments of cognition.

In the meantime the entire GOP must be proud to have JD on the road campaigning for Putin. I mean Orban. Well, same thing. Even though they are now the party of pedophile protectors, billionaire protectors, corruption, self-enrichment, and Putin -I wonder if they will change "GOP" to a different three letter acronym?

Frank Nuts's avatar

Wow. I have not been paying attention. I remember seeing her on Morning Joe when we used to watch. Joe seemed to like her. I see why now — two peas in a pod I guess.

Frank Nuts's avatar

Pancakes, I did not know that Haberman was part of, or went to, the dark side. There’s too many things going on. I haven’t seen or read anything about her in a long time. If she can’t tell that the Nutcracker is a psychopath then she has serious problems.

So she’s part of that New York Times counter-reality cabal. That’s too bad. I had thought she was a respected journalist. Oh well.

It’s not hard to be part of the “reality crowd” — you just open your eyes and look and focus your attention and listen. Why is that so hard?

I guess some people want something to be true so badly that they ignore everything that points to the contrary. What a horrible existence. There’s no way they could be happy people.

Don’t they want to be happy? Do they even know what happy is? Do cruelty, pain, suffering and hate make them happy? What is their deal? What are they trying to achieve? Are they just plain miserable and so want everyone else to be miserable too?

I want to be happy. I want others to be happy. Why can’t we just get along with and help each other and be happy? Seems pretty simple. It’s not complicated.

devourerofpancakes's avatar

She was a good journalist, I think. But she has been back and forth with Trump - sometimes critical, sometimes carrying water. But she was his go to during his first term. I don't know much about her beyond that.

I am going to deploy a tortured metaphor: if you’ve ever cheated on a diet, there is a moment when you have said oh fuck it I might as well eat whatever I want since I’ve already blown it. This is what scares me about where we are with the Looney Tunes government. Why not invade Greenland? Why not invade Cuba? Why not drop a nuclear bomb on Iran? We’ve already positioned ourselves as the world’s wrecking ball so let’s just go for it and wreck more shit. It won’t make a difference since we’re already in deep; we can worry about getting back on our diet later. Let’s indulge fully without constraint. Constraint is for boring people.
