Also here in Loudoun County VA (DC suburbs) where our Republicon sheriff Mike Chapman, not coincidentally a National Sheriffs Assholiation bigwig, decided to obey in advance in 2024 by detaining immigrants for ICE. Unfortunately he is the law here as he and his allies have frustrated all attempts to date to form a professional, politically neutral police force.

I wouldn't characterize him as a MAGAt as he's been around before that became a thing; better to think of him as an example of those willing to obey in advance. When he was first elected Loudon was red but that has been changing; we are now bluish purple with the only female African American county board chairperson in 400 years of Virginia's history and a Democrat congressman of Indian descent. I'm hoping Chapman's time will soon be up but more importantly that with a professional police force the office of Sheriff will be demoted to its proper place as servant of the courts.

The Lamestream media has stopped practicing professional journalism, AFAIC, since 2023. Their leadership are either money grubbing oligarchs, who see nothing wrong with paying million dollar bribes once in a while, or corporatchiks who only understand dollars in & dollars out. Fortunately, many Americans, not as many as I would like, have migrated away from sitting in front of a big screen and have pulped & pre-digested information fed to them. Well, Alameda County's eastern half is somewhat conservative. I think our sheriffs are more moderate now, but in the time of Louie Santucci, the evil county sheriff of the 1960s they certainly weren't. I'll try to add to this later. Back...and in those days our county d.a. was the dreaded, later to be attorney general of the US for Reagan, Ed Meese (think that was his name.) It certainly can't be hi-tech oligarchs, we didn't have any in those days, and I don't see them winning any elections. Although there's a little agriculture in eastern Alameda County and some in LA County, I don't think agricultural moneyed interests are electing the county sheriffs except in the areas around Bakersfield and Fresno.

So proud of my city! Hubby and I went to the Evanston rally, where there were, I would estimate, at least 3,000 people -- at least 3X as many as at earlier protests. Then we went to the rally in Wilmette, which was also far larger than previous events there. We've been wanting these protests to get bigger and bigger -- and they are!!! 💪🏻🇺🇸 This aggression will not stand, man! The Resistance abides!!!

Expand full comment
Linda Weide's avatar

That is great Michelle! I saw footage of Evanston on the news and it looked packed. I did not know about Wilmette, but I saw there was one in Highland Park as well and read about one in Jefferson Park, and some other Suburbs.

I have read different numbers about the turnout. The last was 12.1 million.

Expand full comment
michellefromchicago's avatar

Love that 12.1 million figure, Linda! Police departments tend to underestimate attendance at these events, but the National Park Service does a better job of it.

The Wilmette protest happens every Saturday from 11 am to noon in front of the Village Hall on Wilmette Avenue, usually with no specific theme; it's a general liberal protest, with a variety of signage. We have attended a few times. The crowd is about 95% seniors, many of whom know each other, but some younger folk have started showing up, too. No chanting, but lots of chatting. ☺️ A few young, local Trumpers have discovered us and like to drive or walk by and harass us a bit, but they always take off quickly without causing any real difficulty. Some people just have nothing better to do....

On Saturday, June 28, there's going to be a Takedown protest at the Tesla dealership on Skokie Blvd. in Northbrook as part of the MuskMustFall Global Day of Action. There are protesters there every Saturday, actually -- usually a handful -- but every once in a while there are hundreds of people there, and this will probably be one of them. The organizer, Rob, is incredibly committed to the cause. We're planning to be there, and I'm making sure my clients and students who are interested in such things know about it, too.

Michelle, I will not be here on June 28. I hope the event goes well. It is great that you have someone like Rob to help you organize. I heard this morning from someone in Hamburg that the numbers there were underreported as well. I will let my friends who will be here in Chicago know.

In Indivisible Deutschland, which is part of Indivisible Abroad we were talking about what other businesses of Musks that we could go after. One that would get both Musk and Thiel is going after PayPal. I have started to do that, but have had a lot of personal things going on that have kept me from going all out to do that. I raised my daughter to know that if it only used PayPal, we were not going to be using it. PayPal is easier to go after than the government businesses, but we should be doing that too. We should insist that our government get rid of contracts with Musk and Thiel's Palantir.

It’s probably a pipe dream but it would be nice to greatly strengthen the screening of candidates for law enforcement to weed out the sociopaths and psychopaths who are naturally drawn to a job that includes guns and coercive force over others, as well as raising the minimum educational and intelligence requirements for the job to weed out the dumbshits and emotionally damaged bullies who currently make up much of local law enforcement agencies’ rank and file across the country. More than the military, these are the dangerous fascists in our midst. It’s where those who can’t do much else in life often end up.

I mean no disrespect to those LEOs who are sincere, thoughtful, and generally ethical in doing their jobs; a role that can bring them in frequent contact with those who are the worst of society.

Disgusting. And pathetic!

On the flip side-it seemed that the local Oakland and San Francisco cops that worked Dead shows back in the 70s and early 80s (before proto-fascist Ronnie Raygun started the execrable War on Americans who take Drugs, leading to the current attitudes) were generally pretty cool and tolerant regarding stoner hippie types. More than one County Sheriff or City Police Chief stated that working Dead shows was much mellower and preferable to working a football game.

3.5% of the population is the point where change is 100% eventually.

For the US, that would be ~9 million.

trump doesn't care how many show up. He only cares about people who drool over him and line his pockets. We will have to have a national walkout if we want to change anything - starve the profit mongers by shutting down the economy. If enough of us participated, it wouldn't take long.

Well, he did look pretty downcast in those pictures. He thought they would all be dressed up in pretty costumes and come up to him and say, one by one, with tears in their eyes, "Sir, I'm willing to DIE for you." That would have been nice. Plus tens of millions of people cheering for him. He had to have been SUPER disappointed when the troops didn't sing "Happy Birthday to you, Sir".

He wants praise, always. He does care how many came to his party, and how many were elsewhere denouncing him. He planned for 200,000 to watch the parade: estimated attendance was ~8000, about equal to the attendance at the No Kings rally in Knoxville TN (medium size city at 800K population, and a place Trump carried by 20%) or Dublin CA (much bluer area to be sure, but 1/10 the size of Knoxville).

50501 & Alt National Parks have the count at 11-12M people. Legacy media keeps saying 5 at hundreds of events when it was over 2K protests. And consider that these heavily policed (& sometimes iced) events were not safe for Black & Brown people so many didn’t go, it’s a considerable underestimate of what could have been were we a less racist society. Of course, as the sign said, we’d have been at brunch. BTW, as we were walking into the Portland protest, one of the policemen said, “Hi,” & when we said, “Hi” back, he smiled & said, “Have a great day.” Wish it were that way everywhere & the ice gestapo had never been.

Happy father’s day to everyone who celebrates.

I parked near the Patterson Park/Baltimore event, where a cop was nearby. He said, if you park here, I would have to give you a citation. I asked how much, $50! But, he said, I am eating this ice cream (which he was!) so I am not citing you!!! Yes, of course, I moved and found another spot!

Great post! This might be the first time in his miserable 79 years that he didn’t get what he wanted and I couldn’t be happier that it happened so publicly. He was so dejected and humiliated in that clip. Shout out to the US Army for bring their squeaky tank and their fatigues. (If there were dress uniforms, they weren’t in any clips that I saw.) Shout out also to everyone who got tickets they didn’t intend to use; I saw you all in the not-crowd. Huge shout out to the millions who protested. Jeff should write a children’s book called “Donnie’s Not Good, Very Bad Birthday” to teach kids how to not behave if they want other kids to show up at their party. We also need an adult version.

However,

What a glorious day for those of us who gathered by the millions to let the pathetic creature know in no uncertain terms that we will not tolerate a king, that we will not tolerate HIM. We've only just begun.
