It’s sad. So sad! We are the world’s wealthiest country. We just increased taxes on and stripped benefits from the poor—all to feed the WEALTHY. Uncaringly ruthless Republicans, bought off by the WEALTHY, have an agenda of pain and suffering for the poor, the needy, the sinking middle class. For heaven’s sake, give heathcare, childcare, food assistance, and LIVING wages to everyone. Charge the total cost to the WEALTHY billionaires. They cannot be satisfied, and need their greedy asses kicked for this carnage. They are funding the ruthlessness; they are gouging and gorging. To what purpose is their $ billions? Hoarding alone. Outlaw this hoarding! They cannot spend it all, yet they fund tax cuts only for themselves. Sound about right to you? I made protest signs for your upcoming protests. Protesting is now critical for Occupied D.C. We must fill the streets! There is just enough time to get signs printed for your protest group. Fill the hands of the signless with signs…or hoagies. Where are your signs? It is time to post them so that others can use them. FreeDC!

Hey Victoria, I'm a native Ohioan, but haven't lived there in 50 years. However I'm aware that there were 2 votes put on the statewide ballot in 2015 and 2018 in attempts to curtail partisan gerrymandering. They passed with a healthymajority. But the Republican Supreme Court and legislature did NOT allow the people's wishes to be followed. Since then, I've been telling my family and friends in Cincinnati that they do NOT live in a democracy. The Republicans have seen what they can do there and just keep on going

Well, we hoped that his voters following his advice during Covid would cull their numbers and it did, but still plenty more where they came from for this second round. Is Trump getting a lot of the demented crowd? Do people with dementia still vote? There is nothing in the law that says you have to be of sound mind to vote.

Expand full comment
longtimebirdwatcher's avatar

t does. My father wouldn't let my grandmother vote her last time (1978) and wouldn't let my mother vote either in 1998, because her Alzheimer's was so advanced. But he was a Democrat, who at least have standards and morals.

My father had dementia and I made him go vote (Obama). I figured that muscle memory would cause him to make the same choice that he would have under normal circumstances. And dementia patients arguably have a larger than average stake in election outcomes as medical care is taken away and nursing homes folding.

After I do all the research on the ballot, especially the little known candidates like judges, I go over it with my husband and son to make sure they are okay with it, and then I fill out all of our mail in ballots. My husband and son both have reading difficulties. This would have been okay with my Dad. I can't remember filling out his ballots for him, although he was legally blind the last 12 years of his life. But he felt that neither my mother or his mother were capable of understanding what they were doing (my grandmother was 98) and he didn't think the franchise extended to those with no understanding. He was a hardcore Democrat all his life and named his son after Adlai Stevenson.

Linda Weide's avatar

I am sure many people do that. I helped my daughter with both her US and her German ballots. She just turned 20, so she was not super experienced voting and for the US she was voting from abroad. I went over it with her ahead of time and she could ask me questions before she went to vote on how it worked.

I agree. The stakes are high for people who draw medicare as well as everyone who is not a billionaire to pay for health care in this country. I am worried about her senior retirement community going under. Half the floor that she is living on is empty. She is moving to memory care which costs an arm and a leg. It seems to be full.

Expand full comment
Linda Weide's avatar

That is your dad doing the right thing, but is there something written into the law that prevents people with a dementia diagnosis from voting? My mom would not remember to on her own, but someone could trick her at this point because she does not know what is going on. Short term and working active memory are not working. It is the long term that seems to still be there.

I am in a neighborhood where there is NO in-person voting. You have to put your ballot in the mail.

We have voted in every election in San Francisco, always in person, in multiple neighborhoods, with absolutely no problem. This neighborhood doesn't have enough voters to have polling places so you must use a mail-in ballot.

I miss going to vote in person though. My husband and I always cheered each other afterwards and said, "Twin powers, activate!!" (Old cartoon)

A little known fact about actual Nazism in the Third Reich. There were many ethnically diverse members of the SS, including a division of Tibetans and Jewish officers. Nazism is a philosophical worldview rather than merely a racist protest political party. Its core belief is in the Progress of Mankind by the Superior evolved individual with its foundations in our Winners Take All capitalist philosophy. The Nazi genocide of the German Jewish people, amongst others, was primarily to do with proving who was the truly superior Man as opposed to just racist. Hence the alliance with Nazism by many in the upper class of Hindu caste system like JD Vance’s wife or Opus Dei Catholics or certain Protestant evangelical sects.

Or the super wealthy or super obsessed with power in body or mind. Postwar Nazism is now a wider church of people believing that they are innately superior to ‘others’ for one reason or another. A faith that they need to constantly test the truth of through the deadly persecution of the ‘weak’. It is an apex predator religion whose adherents are not strictly limited to white male supremacists.

What are the visa requirements in Germany these days Linda?

Expand full comment
Linda Weide's avatar

US citizens don't need a visa and can stay in Germany or EU for 90 of 180 days. So 3 months in within a 180 day period and then 3 months out. If you want to stay longer than that you have to apply for a permanent residency while you are there. You have to register yourself, and get a German insurance which will cover you in the entire EU.

I am a German citizen as is our daughter and it has made it easier for us to move there. Not really easier than someone with permanent residency, which you cannot get until. you are there, so we arrive with permission to do things that others don't have. I have been offered 2 jobs teaching English part time since being there. I am a native speaker and have working permission so of course I would be in demand.

Interesting, similar to other EU countries. My son looked into Finland, which is where my mother’s family all came from. My fathers mothers family all came from Germany, his father Ireland… with the the country in chaos my extended family is looking at escaping.

I’ve got warmer destinations I’ve traveled extensively, on my agenda, thanks for sharing!

Expand full comment
Linda Weide's avatar

Hi Patrick, I particularly did not pick a "warmer" location. In fact, I picked Northern Germany because of global warming. As the global south is trying to move north, and there are environmental catastrophes south and warmer is not my personal choice.

Also, you can probably get EU citizenship if you have documentation of someone not more than a grandparent back that they were born in that country like Finland, Germany or Ireland.

One of the big environmental concerns is that the fresh water of the world is evaporating and being used up by data centers. It is quite frightening how many resources tech sucks up in all sorts of ways. So, the world is running out of water and I would make that a consideration for where you might choose to live. Is there water? What is the climate like? Are there fires and floods? Even in Chicago there is a concern about water because while our governors of the Great Lake States and Canadian Provinces are supposed to be stewarding the water, they are increasingly looking to monetize it. I read recently here in Chicago they want to build a big data center. Tech brings in money, but it also sucks up resources.

If you are just traveling to warmer destinations it is nice and not a problem for committing to the environment. I am fine with the climate where I am living, but do think that my summer vacations will have me heading north not south. I hope I get the time to travel again. I have had a lot of commitments these past few years.

Waste and fraud from a moron with Botox ballooned lips who loses a $4,000 Gucci bag containing $3,000 in cash in a pizza joint? No way. As Mary Trump noted in her YouTube, it will cost $1.4m per mile to paint the southern border fence black (over a $ billion). This was clearly Donald's brilliant idea because he's busy sundowning and doesn't know things cool down at NIGHT.
