people keep asking me, who are those people in your social media banner?

so, I'll answer.

the photo was taken in Poland around 1917. the couple in the lower right are my maternal great-grandparents. the couple in the upper right are my maternal grandparents. the other folks are my grandmother's brothers and sisters.

Schnauzermom's avatar

My mother, aunt, and grandmother all came here from Katowice in the Fifties. Mom will be 90 next year…and she’s a diehard evangelical Trumper. I suspect dementia. When I told her all the naturalized citizens (like her) were going to be deported, she was shocked. “He can’t do that!” Oh yes he can, mom. The Trump Supreme Court says he can do anything he wants to. Have fun in Warsaw!”

Heidi Jo's avatar

Did everyone make it out?

Heidi Jo's avatar

Happy to hear it. My mom,101, is a Survivor born in Vienna. She is the only one from her family that did survive.

Susie in OH's avatar

Looks to me that on the Morning Joe episode dug its own grave by blaming everything on Democrats. I heard two minutes of Joe ranting at Democrats. The first minute was devoted to trying to prevent my head from exploding and the second minute was spent vowing to never listen to Joe blow his two-faced bullshit about anything ever again because this is Joe kissing Trump’s arsse to get off his enemies list. He must have notice that since that morning his viewership virtually disappeared. I’m done with that pig’s lip! Buh Bye! I’m at Substack and those who speak Truth to power.

PJ Schuster's avatar

I hope it’s true that everyone who ever watched @morningjoe, never turns it on again. I never did like him, arrogant know-it-all. I will continue to watch JoyAnn Reid, Rachel Maddow, & Lawrence O’Donnell, they are truth tellers

Susie in OH's avatar

Joe should be careful. He thinks he’s hot shit at oratory. Well, I’d like to see Joy Reid take him on! I’ve never seen anyone’s brain work at the speed of Joy’s. And she not only talks fast she actually makes sense and you better hope you don’t try to disrespect her or LIE on her show! You will regret that

My Mom's great grandfather came over from Poland in the 1840s.

Somers, the Americanized version of my Polish father's surname,

Sumerychek. I've never been to Poland, but if Putin starts amassing troops on the border, I'll be visiting.

Stephen Brady's avatar

I should add, he was a Polish Jew fleeing a pogrom.

Maui Wahine's avatar

Do you still have relatives in Poland? I worry about Poland now along with Ukraine.

Dana Bennett's avatar

We all should. At least pray for Poland. They helped Ukraine A WHOLE LOT!

Patrick Daniels aka Cromulent1's avatar

Logical Maui, one cannot imagine that Putin would be satisfied by only invading a couple of countries!!

1. Bash thinks there are fine people on both sides?

2. Mika and Joe can now be enshrined in the Susan Collins Hall of People Who Learned their Lesson

Mike Hammer's avatar

And Dana comes from a Jewish background which makes it even crazier.

Stephen Miller is working on the final solution to the immigrant problem right now.

I remember a chilling term used in Nazi Germany. The translation is Worthless Eaters. They were killed because they couldnʻt work. It reminds me of how Musk and Ramaswamy view the poor on Medicaid.

I got a chill just reading that. Yes, he is.

If only someone had stuffed him in a seabag and thrown him off the Santa Monica Pier during a winter storm, back when he was just That Annoying Little Shit at Santa Monica High.

I wonder if any of his family members were exterminated during the holocaust. One would think he’d have some empathy, but I guess to work in the Dumbass administration one must be devoid of human decency.

alice jena's avatar

I knew one of his cousins; the entire family hates him and doesn't speak to him

Carthago Delenda Est's avatar

I went to high school with his (Stephen Miller’s) mother. His entire family—well, his mother’s family—do indeed hate him. One of his uncles is a retired neuropsychologist and has been very vocal about Stephen. Miller’s grandparents were first generation. Lovely, warm people who must be turning in their graves if they could see what their grandson has become.

alice jena's avatar

The cousin i knew was my psychologist. Sadly he passed away

PJ Schuster's avatar

IDK but his grandparents were Jews fleeing from Europe. I just don’t understand how he doesn’t understand immigrants fleeing danger & persecution.

shee-rah's avatar

Exactly what I was thinking.

Doreen Garza's avatar

Who are you referring to? Musk or Ramaswamy?

Bonnie Council's avatar

Somehow when I look at her these days I see terror in her eyes. She knows trump will be shutting down all media that told the truth about him, so she's trying to sound non-committal. It ain't working Dana. What you sound like is a coward who's afraid to speak the truth.

I also called 2 Democrats who voted YES on that same bill 1 week ago whom I donated heavily to during their recent campaigns, even though I’m not their constituent. Heidi Jo's avatar

You are so right. I think I saw Mika clutching imaginary pearls yesterday morning.

Nancy Potter's avatar

Bash is trying too hard to both-sides, probably because she, like Joe and Mika, is afraid of Trump. It is true that there are anti-Semites on the left and on the right. The ones on the right march around in uniforms waving a Nazi flag and trying to terrorize people. The ones on the left, I would argue, seem to be dumb kids who are upset about Gaza and have failed to distinguish between Netanyahu and Jews generally. The ones on the left are never going to cosplay as German soldiers and will probably figure out in a few years that their rhetoric and prejudice went way over the top.

SPW's avatar

Good response. You reckon they put jelly on both sides of their damn toast?

TCinDC's avatar

Rick Calegari's avatar

Not now, not ever Neal. One way to survive this shitshow is by sticking together and continue to express our views on Jeff's Substack. I freed myself from the increasing MAGA grip of Twitter yesterday and joined Bluesky. After being called an Incel by some musky loving asshole because I called the co president a greedy bastard was the last straw. Bluesky is a nice change from the pro red hat format of Twitter and cable news. Fuck those sellouts. We have much better options.

It’s all about the fucking money honey. The press is sending us straight into authoritarianism because ya know… profits. I hate everything.

Ruth Coleman's avatar

Susan, watch the stock market. Amazingly and unfortunately, it is likely going to the money boys who save us - very sad but likely true. It's headed down this week, and the money boys will only take that one on the chin for so long. He who shall not be named is a pawn in a much bigger strategy. Let's hope he's as imperfect a pawn and narcisistic as he appears. If that's the case, the ensuing chaos will be bad but we can survive it, all be it in worse shape on the other end. Second, Joe and Mika - go f yourselves. Watch - either off the air or on Fox within a year. And folks, support alternative media. Besides Jeff, Ron Filipkowski, editor and chief of Midas Touch is my other go to guy. Time to stop crying in our beer and do something about it!

Susan Niemann's avatar

Ruth, I have like, .22¢ in the stock market...and I'm pretty worried about retirements and life savings going out the window. And I agree....supporting independent journalists is the only way to go now. The corporate media has no soul, no integrity.

Ruth Coleman's avatar

Susan, lots of folks are in your shoes and I am so concerned. But we can only do what we can to change it. Check out the AA prayer - very applicable now. And I'm not suggesting investing the stock market - far from it. Am suggesting watching it. A bell weather to tell us where things are headed. I detest the money agenda, but crazy times make strange bed fellows. And as Jeff says, we have to take care of ourselves before we even think about taking care of others. Won't work any other way.

Barbara Rengstorff's avatar

Ruth and Susan - a lot of people who don’t own stocks think that the stock market doesn’t really affect them. But they do have pensions, maybe even annuities for retirement benefits. Those pensions and annuities invest in the stock market to provide the benefits that retirees receive. So even though you may not personally own a share of stock, if you have any other retirement income besides bank savings accounts and social security (don’t even get me started on that one), the state of the stock market will most likely affect you.

Kristy Kanen's avatar

I have some chicken STOCK, but it's almost used up.

Susan Niemann's avatar

Right. I get that. It affects much more than people understand. 👍

I think they're also afraid of a journalist purge. They don't want to be on the list when The Tangerine Terrorist goes full dictator and authorizes the arrest and/or death of any journalist or new source that isn't kissing his ass.

I've already posted about this on my FB and Bluesky accounts, so I'll keep this brief: Being born in 1971 and fully Gen X, I'm in that generation who actually paid attention to history but also asked ourselves "How could something like that happen?" when we read about Nazi sympathizers in America during WWII , communist party members stateside, etc.

Then I watched these two practically fall over themselves to soft peddle their obvious capitulation to the incoming dictator and now I have a better sense of how this happens.

I'm not certain what was worse here - that these two hypocritical twat waffles did such a whiplash - inducing turnaround or that they actually attempted to rationalize it as their holding his feet to the fire as they "always have."

No, you collective heads of knuckle, you were practically calling him the Antichrist a few weeks ago. This is not the same.

The Morning Joe show has signed up to be part of the propaganda machine for the Rotting Pumpkin -elect. What's funny is, they've been eviscerated by both parties for it. They would have actually saved dignity if they'd just fellated the guy on camera. That at least would have been more honest.

Elliot Blinder's avatar

It did not sound that way to me . Let's just wait and see . Putting our heads in the sand and pretending he is not going to be our President/Dictator is unwise at this point . We need to keep our friends close and our enemies closer.

Marie Martin's avatar

Read Navalvy’s bio. Yes, he died for his beliefs. But that his battle was worth it, is clearly his point. Truth is not only important. Truth is all of it. Your position is appalling.

D.S. Ullery's avatar

At the end they stressed the importance of "listening" to President elect Rotting Pumpkin.. That's where the propaganda begins because, guess what? Some 74 million of us DID listen and understood he meant every word. You're in here defending people who are capitulating to evil. That's not an exaggeration.. This guy is evil. He's increasingly unhinged, he's constantly in a state of aggrievement and his motivation is to get even. There's now reporting that multiple political and public figures who openly criticized Trump have packed go bags in case they need to flee the country. Think about that - a president was just reelected and the response from his critics isn't to fight harder against him, it's to prepare to flee for their lives.

There's nothing to listen to, nothing more to suss out . If you want to listen to propaganda, that's fine. But as of now, I'm tuning these two out completely ( as well as large swaths of their mainstream media brethren) because I don't trust them.

"we didn’t see eye to eye on a lot of issues, and we told him so.” "And he listened closely, took notes -- and laughed hysterically after we left." I gave up CNN a long, long time ago. I've gotten sick of MSNBC except for Lawrence O'Donnell. I've canceled my subscriptions to the NYT and the WaPo. Whew! That says an enormous lot about what's going on with the Fourth Estate in our nation. As Timothy Snyder put it in his book, "On Tyranny": "Listen for dangerous words." That's pretty much all we're hearing these days.

Marcie's avatar

You can see Lawrence on Youtube. I love Rachel and her history research, but I can take a break from weekly for awhile. I have always thought Dana needed a personality transplant anyway. Her closing statement should be "Since I just told you what your answer should be, thank you so much for coming on the show so I can smugly taking shots at you".

kdsherpa's avatar

Why You Tube instead of TV? (Just curious.) I used to watch Rachel religiously. Unfortunately, the once a week show feels disjointed to me so I no longer watch, either.

Marcie's avatar

Then you can pick and choose the segment you want to see instead of turning on MSNBC which is my goal, along with CNN.

kdsherpa's avatar

I do want to support MSNBC -- if it makes any difference in "viewer" numbers. You Tube sounds luxurious, though: no commercials!

Hannah's avatar

Got rid of tv. 250 channels and nothing worth watching. With YouTube I can pick and choose.

Charles Austin's avatar

P123Sunny's avatar

Marie Martin's avatar

It’s like she’s a click off.

PJ Schuster's avatar

I will definitely continue to watch Joy Reid, Rachel, & Lawrence. They’re the only ones with spines.

P123Sunny's avatar

Again - to be fair ish: other folks I listen to on podcasts, etc. are very jumpy since 11/5 - you can tell they have either had 'a meeting' or are 'getting notes' from owners or sr management: TONE IT DOWN / WATCH YOUR (and your guest's) WORDING - not themselves at all. New era or a passing / uncomfortable moment - idk.

kdsherpa's avatar

And of course there is the lawyer for a number of media "personalities" (what a phrase!) and politicians is advising them to leave the country before the inauguration for a couple of weeks to see how things play out -- i.e., will they be killed if they return.

Tully's avatar

I read a couple of the upper military brass around for Trump's first term are looking to leave the country - no names given. Apparently, Trump wants to go after the generals involved with the Afghanistan withdrawal - probably to keep them from talking about how Trump was the actual one who fucked the whole thing up just before Biden took office.

kdsherpa's avatar

He initially threatened General Mark Milley with execution. Now it's "just" Court Martial. How SICK has this nation become that our top military leaders must go HIDE to avoid being arrested or even killed?!

PJ Schuster's avatar

Exactly!!! Trump made a mess of the whole thing & then dumped it in Biden’s lap.

Columns like this help me stay grounded in reality. When I heard Joe and Mika discuss their Trump meeting, I think my jaw actually dropped. You're right. I'm convinced there was malfeasance. I'm extremely disappointed in Biden and Kamala for laying down.

shee-rah's avatar

I saw something about Kamala appealing the vote counts in swing states where the vote counts were uploaded via Starlink

Jeff Chernoff's avatar

If that is true, all suspicions just became probables.

Of course they would have examined the handling of vote totals in detail, and when they saw Elon's Starlink in the path... there was jubilation. Voting data went through his hands? I'm sick to my stomach all over again.

Claudia Kinsey's avatar

Remember when journalism and its related careers was a noble profession, committed to providing the facts? I understand that Joe and Mika’s decision was self-protective, but they picked the wrong profession if they wanted to play it safe. BTW, I agree that Kamala Harris should have at least made the GOP sweat a little, by asking for recounts. I’m sure she made her decision to provide citizens with a seamless transition and as much stability as possible. Also, Dems are the grownups in the room and want to be seen that way.

arne link's avatar

I understand that she wanted to be the adult in the room. However, I believe Dems should fight corruption at every opportunity. There was a lot of skeevy stuff that was worthy of investigation. Also, she was probably afraid of being killed.

Thanks Jeff for telling it like it is…I never watched Joe & Mika. They’re just empty talking heads. And I have never liked Dana Bash. So it doesn’t surprise me. I don’t watch CNN anymore.
