I hear you. Our grocery bill has almost doubled in the last three years, and utilities have at least doubled. Just for us personally, it doesn't matter if, say, the cost of durable goods hadn't gone up that much before the idiot's tariffs, because we can't afford any big-ticket purchases. Day-to-day expenses are what most of us are worried about.
I got an oil change the other day and it cost 50% more than last year. Then, feeling much poorer I went to Aldi and all the prices seemed considerable higher. Though I did find some frozen strudels on clearance for just over a buck so I bought 2 just to experience getting a bargain. LOL. They are delicious though.

That has always passed me off. Most recently, under Biden, the ivory-tower pundits talked about how the economy was doing well because core inflation was down. But food and utility prices never went down. They've been rising steadily since the pandemic began.
And housing prices never went down. My rent increased 50% between 2021 and '25.
I hear you. Our grocery bill has almost doubled in the last three years, and utilities have at least doubled. Just for us personally, it doesn't matter if, say, the cost of durable goods hadn't gone up that much before the idiot's tariffs, because we can't afford any big-ticket purchases. Day-to-day expenses are what most of us are worried about.
I got an oil change the other day and it cost 50% more than last year. Then, feeling much poorer I went to Aldi and all the prices seemed considerable higher. Though I did find some frozen strudels on clearance for just over a buck so I bought 2 just to experience getting a bargain. LOL. They are delicious though.
Speaking of price increases, I got a home heating oil bill the other day: $1,215. Same number of gallons (213 gallons). Rate went up to $5.699/gal. I’ve lived in NE all my life. Never saw a rate like that. Thanks, Donny.

We are eating out less than we did last year. Dinner for two (a salad with chicken and a pot roast sandwich) a beer and a glass of wine. With tax and tip it was $96.00! $96 at the grocery store gets you less now but I can still make a few meals with that and include a bottle of wine and a six pack of craft beer.
I dropped $55 for breakfast at our local diner the other day. $3.50 each for coffee (all we can drink, and I can drink a lot of coffee), $17 for an omelette (up charges for Gluten Free toast, and mushrooms), $19 for an omelette for me, plus tax and tip.
We like to go out to eat about once a week, but it does get expensive.

A fascinating book about a horrific crime in a tumultuous time in China, just as Japan has invaded China and the warlord-led factions have an uneasy alliance to oppose them. And the ex-pat community adds to all the intrigue.

Very few Americans are schooled on the invasion, an invasion that is the origination of WWII, and fewer Americans know about the abject cruelty the Japanese army inflicted on the Chinese population.. Actually this invasion served as a catalyst for Mao, as head of the CCP and Chiang leading the Nationalists to find common ground. Few Americans realize both parties, Communist and Nationalist were birthed by Sun Yat Sen… Organizationally both parties were the same and both had the goals of kicking out the western powers entrenched in the SE region of China and the Japanese. I got to hand it to you Doc and thanks for bringing this essential historical fact out…

It was my affinity for mystery and true crime that led me to the book, but all the historical subplots were fascinating! Paul French wrote another book set in the same timeframe about Shanghai called City of Devils.
