I contributed $$ to Colin Allred too. I thought this was the year when some Texans grew some brain cells and realized that fleeing to Cancun during the electrical crisis while residents suffered was just too much. Nope, I was wrong. My question is, what bullshit does a politician in a red state need to do to lose favor and votes from MAGA types?

Expand full comment

It is infuriating. I was one of those freezing Texans during that horrible time. When the electricity would come back on for just an hour or two, at some point, I caught the story about Cruz taking off to Cancun. I was pissed!!! I despise him with the heat of a thousand suns. Gosh, that was an awful time. I've never been so cold for such an extended period. It went on for days. It's a long story, but it was horrific. There were a couple of days toward the end, and I worried I might not make it; I just had dark thoughts. I would stay in bed, under multiple blankets and just stare into the dark. Ugh! It was bad.

I live in Texas (which sucks even more than it did before the election). The rural voters are the ones (but not the only ones) that seem to be electing and reelecting these fucking jackasses. We keep having great Democratic candidates but we just can’t get them elected. Fellow jackasses abbott, paxton, patrick, among many others are mean, heartless (literally) fucking pieces of smelly shit. We have to get rid of them. abbott and paxton are up for reelection in two more years. I don’t know who we could put up against those shitheads. We in texas will not have a blue wall protecting us. It will be open season on our rights. I can’t afford to just up and move to Illinois or California. My only salvation is that I live in Austin which is more progressive than other places in this shithole state. I am pissed off today. Can you tell? 🤬😡😤

Lisa, I think they are going to be aware now. I would say all of the Latino/as who voted for Trump who end up being rounded up into camps or big prisons before being deported to who knows where, are believing him when he says he is rounding up undocumented immigrants, but he plans to round up documented ones too. It will not matter if it is a mistake because the people working the system are going to be loyalists and will not be any help. If you were born in the US what is he going to do, just pick a country to send you to?

I am super glad that Blue State governors are standing up to Trump. Too bad Merrick Garland didn't bring him to trial quickly like they did in Brazil with Bolsonaro. Then, instead of millions of Americans and undocumented immigrants Trump would be in prison.

As a 79 year old, I’m at the beginning of the Boomers. I didn’t know I was entitled then, but I can see it now. Born into a white middle class family (which fell apart when I was 10 due to alcoholism), as I’ve said other places, my family expected me to go to college, which was INSANELY affordable then. ($50 per semester for San Diego State, which is $505 today adjusted for inflation. Useful to remember that I was working at the time, and earning $1.25 an hour and chicken was $.33/pound. Don’t ask about steak; Mom and I didn’t even look there, so I have no idea.) Of course it was expected that during or after college I’d get married and pop out babies. If I did work I’d be a teacher or secretary.

We are the reason for the civil rights movement.

We fought in the streets and on college campuses and were arrested and bled and died.

Many, if not most, of us fled our conservative parents’ homes because we refused to be drafted, or we wore our hair long, or we didn’t wear bras. They either threw us out or we left because we were being physically beaten.

Entitled? Seriously? Choke on it, Honey.

My first job was at 15, doing piecework in a factory. I worked for minimum wage (something around $1/hour) + however many tickets/day. I did that every summer and winter break to pay for school. I went to a state school—no fancy private college—and worked while at school, as a server, an RA in the dorm, giving tours to prospective students. Graduated with no debt.

The DH had loans, which we paid off for 6 years. My first job out of school paid $105/week—in Manhattan. After his service in the New York National Guard was up, we began moving around the country, in search of job and career opportunities.

Well, guess what? We've been screwed over by the system, too. Have to work because our savings are being depleted by inflation and corporate greed. Because no one has pensions any longer. But we're too sick to work or no one is hiring anyone with gray hair.

I'm talking about this person's comment, not the governors' statements. And sure, they can tell him anything, and there are certain things they can do to protect people. But by and large, the federal government is the federal government, and states can't just refuse to abide by any laws they don't like, like a national abortion ban. And they can't do anything about tariffs and tax hikes on the poor and middle class. This "we will prevail" attitude spreading around the left, alongside "let this radicalize you" and "fight fight fight" is like some kind of street-gang Reader's Digest. And as I said, a lot of people are going to suffer and die.

And we already know the danger we're in. There's a huge difference between acknowledging the reality of a situation and just trying to undercut anyone pointing out moments of hope because you're so individually miserable you want everyone to feel complete despair without respite. You are clearly landing in the latter category.

What the hell would you have us do? Sit here and cry all is lost, or seize on the already open acts of defiance and find a reason to fight? It's only been a couple of days and I'm already sick of these posts just surrendering altogether because things look dark.

Yeah, they damned well do, but that's when we get off our collective asses and fight harder and popping into a thread on a post that's literally written to celebrate acts of open defiance just to argue that there's no hope and we're screwed is a miserable, shitty waste of energy. I have no intention of doing that. If that's your jam, have it it. But I'm not interested. I'm a pragmatic realist myself, but I'm not giving into this. That defiance in the face of this mess is how we survive.

Remember Elon and his known conversations with Putin. What else could it be? But I don't want to go down that life-sucking rabbit hole for the next 4 years.

I entertained this idea, too. Because the people who didn't show up to vote for a woman of color who was clearly the better candidate? They were on our side. And that is the horrific twist to this sad tale. Did they vote down ballot but leave the Pres/VP choice blank? Was it some sort of protest? Maybe the NYT should go on another cletus safari to let us know just how many Dems and independents are sexist, misogynist, racist disappointments, and how many lost many relatives in Gaza and were enraged about it. And then there's the price of eggs and gas. I won't scream into the void any more. I'm done. THEY might want to next year though!

It doesn’t make sense that he got that many votes legitimately after Dobbs. I mean republicans got their asses handed to them in 2022 and 2023 so what changed? Are we supposed to believe people forgot about Dobbs? Something’s not right. I’m accepting the results because I think that if our democracy survives, his actions in his next term will destroy the Republican Party, but something is definitely wrong.

Not to mention his deadly COUP ATTEMPT! Dobbs and coup hadn’t even happened when we fired him last time. And TONS of republicans jumped ship to Kamala. The whole thing stinks. 😷

I watched a clip of a young lady at ASU (Tempe, Arizona) and she stated that she voted for Trump because she heard him say that he was going to protect access to abortion.

Multiply that by a few hundred thousand, and yeah, I can believe he won.

Texas Paul Schroder made a good point on his live show this morning. Repubs NEVER stop campaigning. 24/7 365.

The simple answer is that this country is too racist & misogynist to elect a woman, despite wide-spread enthusiasm for her. I would love a recount of the 50 precincts that were targeted for bomb threats — a pre-planned disruption means there could have been pre-planned fuckery with those machines, done remotely because relatively few or with 50 people on the ground.

Exactly! I said that from the very beginning of Harris’ campaign. She did a Herculean job but the misogyny & racism in this country was too much to overcome

I agree. I've been going over and over it, and I just don't understand how this could possibly have happened! I still haven't seen anything from after the election from Marc Elias. My tiny sliver of hope is that he's looking for evidence of fraud. Not much hope, mind you. My husband pointed out that there's been no calls of fraud at all, none, and for fraud o that scale, it just wouldn't be possible to keep EVERYONE quiet. But it's something to cling to. God, this is going to be bad.

It would be less painful to believe that than to believe that decent people are now outnumbered in the US, but unfortunately the latter explanation is correct.

Among the weird things in this weird time is that Democrats, not Republicans, will be asserting states' rights.

Good.. They kicked abortion to the states, well quid pro quo, mother fuckers. Now the states are using that Independence to offer resistance.

Honestly, for the first time EVER, it's dawning on me that depending on how authoritarian the federal government tries to go, we may actually - as in not hyperbole, but for real - have another civil war on our hands. The stupid assss who voted for this mostly did so because they assumed all of the warnings from Democrats were hyperbole. Well, they're gonna find out and when the genuine hardship and oppression comes, things will go down.

For my part, I've decided to start a substack of my own. I'm a published author of dozens of short stories and two horror collections, so I have skills with the written word. It's time I use those skills to rage against this bullshit and join the voices angrily firing back. Believe me, writing rants is second nature. Guess we'll see if anyone wants to listen.

For real, man.

Think about it: We've already been engaged in a political civil war for four years now, with people like Marjorie " I'm clearly a horse genetically spliced with an ape " Taylor Greene calling openly for a national divorce.

Now we have multiple blue states already cutting through the tap dancing bullshit and flat out telling the aspiring dictator they're not going along with it.

It's only a matter of time before the tension escalates to a point where this open defiance infuriates the rotting pumpkin elect into ordering action against the ones resisting. When they fight back, that's when it's on

I'm in Florida and I am seriously looking into moving to a blue state within the next year if I can pull the resources together.

For them, states' rights means the state's right to do only those things that align with Republican views. Deviating from what Republicans want will result in federalizing whatever they need to.
