My novelist friend Ruth lost her husband Don to Lewy Body Dementia. I am devoutly glad that you and Claudia were spared that. On February 4, Ruth and her FB readers celebrated the seventy-first anniversary of their first date. She was fifteen, Don was sixteen.
I am sure that Claudia knew what you would need to do for your own preservation and would not mind at all. It's certainly not disrespectful to take care of yourself in your time of grief. Whatever it takes, everyone copes differently and we all miss you but we are here for the longhaul.

Jeff, I can’t really add anything unique to these comments, but to say you’re in my thoughts and I’m sure everyone understands that you have to heal sometimes, too. To me the saddest feeling of loss when a friend passes away (and for me it isn’t a “more-than-a” friend), is thinking about how actively engaged they were in the current shared struggles and will not be part of the celebration when it is overcome. Then I remember that they were part of me and I celebrate for both of us.
Reading your newsletter is a healthy dose of humor for me. It channels a range of fiery emotions to a laugh that can't be suppressed and the detachment that your prose gives goes down to the heart and into the core. So heal away man and honor your wife's love faith and knowledge in your unique abilities to communicate difficult situations into transcendent ones.
Just adding my sincere condolences to all of those here. I was reading Claudia’s posts before I started reading yours. She is such an astute and intelligent writer! I will miss her voice.
