SO this - I ended up with a fritzing computer most of yesterday. Sigh. Wanted SO MUCH to comment on those amazing photos which always do my heart good. My eyes have been weird lately so I couldn't bring the logo into focus but I think I recognize the shape/style of that camera Claudia's using...it looks SO MUCH like my old Nikon which I adore (and insisted on dragging with us to the Grand Canyon just so I could get 'real' photos). Hubby wasn't pleased - it's actually his and he was happy with the tiny newer camera which fit into a shirt pocket. So I had to lug this heavy thing around my neck everywhere we went (did I mention I have neck problems?) these last few weeks since I fell have been especially painful, which reminded me of those 'Old Nikon' days. But damn, I got some fantastic shots. Seeing her with that camera gave me the biggest smile - I just KNEW she was a 'real' photographer. I thought it was you since you were always catching her reading, being pensive or with Katie. You're a damn good photographer yourself, Jeff. LOVELY memories now - so glad you kept taking those.

The Mild Jrs are vegan, and have been for at least a couple of years. They follow the “How Not To Die” books by Michael Greger. Mrs Mild Jr says it’s helped with her hair loss.
They do have the occaisonal cheat day (ice cream or cheese, after taking Lactaid, or if I bake something with eggs). But they follow it very strictly, and also feed Grandbaby Mild a vegen diet (except for breastmilk, of course). Grandbaby is growing and meeing all his milestones.

I think you're missing something here. Yes, Ken Paxton is corrupt and vile. The problem is Republicans don't care. Blatant corruption is just not a dealbreaker for them. They would vote for anybody with an "R" next to their name. I think Talarico needs to run on more than calling Paxton corrupt. He really needs to articulate in very specific language what he would do for Texans and America and how he would do it. Ignore the accusations of being vegan or transgender because they're just irrelevant. I beg every Democratic candidate to just get across the message that they care about people who are struggling and how they will help them. It has been documented and demonstrated that people don't respond to facts and statistics; they respond to stories that get an emotional response. Republicans have gotten good at telling those stories even if the emotional response is anger and fear. We need to trigger an emotional response of hope and happiness.
Trump beat Harris by suppressing the vote. He won with votes from only 30% of adults in the US. 40% did not vote. The DNC must motivate that 40% to care enough about the health of the nation to get off their butts and vote. The answer is for them to tell the truth. As Talarico is doing. (Does anyone here have a line into the leadership of the DNC?)
Trump appeals to the 20% of Americans who are unhappy, angry, hate filled, anti-woke (asleep) and proudly ignorant. In their daily lives they are mannerly and courteous. They can be kind in their relations with family, friends and neighbors. But they cheer when Miller brags about harming innocent women and children because they are brown skinned and "not from here". They get a dopamine boost imagining the cruelty and torture. They shrug when the crooks in public offices steal from them. These are humans who will not be swayed by rational arguments. The MAGAs are too far gone. Loud and wrong.
That leaves 80% of the population who are not MAGAs. Trump and his oligarch pals have an uphill battle. The Dems only need 10% of the apathetic 40% to vote. Will they get it done? Or will they continue to lay low and let the crooks steal and harm people and American democracy?
That 40% non-voting figure is highly suspect, particularly given the shenanigans in the last election. As Greg Palast said, if every eligible voter had been allowed to vote, and every legal ballot had been counted, Harris would have won.
In the 2024 election, Harris received 7 million fewer votes than Joe Biden in 2020. This was the result of Elon Musk and his pals suppressing the vote using lies and misinformation to con Dem voters not to show up to even vote.
(The 40% non-voting adults number in 2024 is accurate. Do the math. Of the total US adult population, Trump got 30%, Harris got 29%+ and 40% did not vote for either one.)

I don't disagree with your thorough, well-reasoned analysis, DeBurgh. I think it's spot-on in describing how the election results shook out.
But suppose you were a Georgia voter, and suppose your name was purged from the voter rolls for a made-up reason, and you were never notified. You showed up at your polling place and your name didn't appear in the records. You were given a provisional ballot. This happened to tens of thousands of Georgians, as well as people in other red states. Now, suppose your provisional ballot was accepted but later discarded because....reasons. There would be no record of your having voted, obviously, because you weren't on the rolls.
Or suppose you voted by mail, but your ballot wasn't postmarked when received, but rather, when processed (a new rule, at least in Ohio), and therefore, it was found to be late, and therefore was discarded.
Or suppose you voted by mail, but your hand shook a little bit when you signed the ballot. Oops! Non-matching signature! Ballot discarded.
These things, and other tactics (such as closing polling places before everyone had voted, or changing polling places at the last minute) all happened, and the effect was to eliminate significant numbers of votes.
My point is that quoting a statistic references a final number, but not how it occurred. If all the people were counted who tried to vote but were thwarted, that 40% figure might change a lot.

SO this - I ended up with a fritzing computer most of yesterday. Sigh. Wanted SO MUCH to comment on those amazing photos which always do my heart good. My eyes have been weird lately so I couldn't bring the logo into focus but I think I recognize the shape/style of that camera Claudia's using...it looks SO MUCH like my old Nikon which I adore (and insisted on dragging with us to the Grand Canyon just so I could get 'real' photos). Hubby wasn't pleased - it's actually his and he was happy with the tiny newer camera which fit into a shirt pocket. So I had to lug this heavy thing around my neck everywhere we went (did I mention I have neck problems?) these last few weeks since I fell have been especially painful, which reminded me of those 'Old Nikon' days. But damn, I got some fantastic shots. Seeing her with that camera gave me the biggest smile - I just KNEW she was a 'real' photographer. I thought it was you since you were always catching her reading, being pensive or with Katie. You're a damn good photographer yourself, Jeff. LOVELY memories now - so glad you kept taking those.

Being a vegan since 2015 I find it shocking that a wide swath of our population has think it is a horrid uppity thing to proclaim.
I went vegan because I could not shake a cold and couldn’t play tennis. 🎾 our daughter had same cold and she said it helped.

The Mild Jrs are vegan, and have been for at least a couple of years. They follow the “How Not To Die” books by Michael Greger. Mrs Mild Jr says it’s helped with her hair loss.
They do have the occaisonal cheat day (ice cream or cheese, after taking Lactaid, or if I bake something with eggs). But they follow it very strictly, and also feed Grandbaby Mild a vegen diet (except for breastmilk, of course). Grandbaby is growing and meeing all his milestones.
We eat mostly lacto-ovo vegetarian, with the occasional chicken or fish.
I agree. Where I live, gas is $4.50 a gallon, beef is $8 a pound and a middle-aged, single friend of mine can't find an affordable apartment to rent and the GOP thinks lying about their opponent's food choices is a winning strategy????

I think you're missing something here. Yes, Ken Paxton is corrupt and vile. The problem is Republicans don't care. Blatant corruption is just not a dealbreaker for them. They would vote for anybody with an "R" next to their name. I think Talarico needs to run on more than calling Paxton corrupt. He really needs to articulate in very specific language what he would do for Texans and America and how he would do it. Ignore the accusations of being vegan or transgender because they're just irrelevant. I beg every Democratic candidate to just get across the message that they care about people who are struggling and how they will help them. It has been documented and demonstrated that people don't respond to facts and statistics; they respond to stories that get an emotional response. Republicans have gotten good at telling those stories even if the emotional response is anger and fear. We need to trigger an emotional response of hope and happiness.
Trump beat Harris by suppressing the vote. He won with votes from only 30% of adults in the US. 40% did not vote. The DNC must motivate that 40% to care enough about the health of the nation to get off their butts and vote. The answer is for them to tell the truth. As Talarico is doing. (Does anyone here have a line into the leadership of the DNC?)
Trump appeals to the 20% of Americans who are unhappy, angry, hate filled, anti-woke (asleep) and proudly ignorant. In their daily lives they are mannerly and courteous. They can be kind in their relations with family, friends and neighbors. But they cheer when Miller brags about harming innocent women and children because they are brown skinned and "not from here". They get a dopamine boost imagining the cruelty and torture. They shrug when the crooks in public offices steal from them. These are humans who will not be swayed by rational arguments. The MAGAs are too far gone. Loud and wrong.
That leaves 80% of the population who are not MAGAs. Trump and his oligarch pals have an uphill battle. The Dems only need 10% of the apathetic 40% to vote. Will they get it done? Or will they continue to lay low and let the crooks steal and harm people and American democracy?
That 40% non-voting figure is highly suspect, particularly given the shenanigans in the last election. As Greg Palast said, if every eligible voter had been allowed to vote, and every legal ballot had been counted, Harris would have won.
In the 2024 election, Harris received 7 million fewer votes than Joe Biden in 2020. This was the result of Elon Musk and his pals suppressing the vote using lies and misinformation to con Dem voters not to show up to even vote.
(The 40% non-voting adults number in 2024 is accurate. Do the math. Of the total US adult population, Trump got 30%, Harris got 29%+ and 40% did not vote for either one.)

I don't disagree with your thorough, well-reasoned analysis, DeBurgh. I think it's spot-on in describing how the election results shook out.
But suppose you were a Georgia voter, and suppose your name was purged from the voter rolls for a made-up reason, and you were never notified. You showed up at your polling place and your name didn't appear in the records. You were given a provisional ballot. This happened to tens of thousands of Georgians, as well as people in other red states. Now, suppose your provisional ballot was accepted but later discarded because....reasons. There would be no record of your having voted, obviously, because you weren't on the rolls.
Or suppose you voted by mail, but your ballot wasn't postmarked when received, but rather, when processed (a new rule, at least in Ohio), and therefore, it was found to be late, and therefore was discarded.
Or suppose you voted by mail, but your hand shook a little bit when you signed the ballot. Oops! Non-matching signature! Ballot discarded.
These things, and other tactics (such as closing polling places before everyone had voted, or changing polling places at the last minute) all happened, and the effect was to eliminate significant numbers of votes.
My point is that quoting a statistic references a final number, but not how it occurred. If all the people were counted who tried to vote but were thwarted, that 40% figure might change a lot.

Now I really got it - transgender bad, child sex trafficking, child rape/pedophilia, abuse and rape of women etc just fine/good. I may be slow but I always get there. This is what the MAGA base stands for. This is who and what they voted for. I wish I had something more productive to say about it, but at least now it’s distilled and crystallized in my mind that this is what we’re up against.
PS - I was a little leery about Talarico’s emphasis on Christianity but I’m coming to trust that he’s for keeping it out of government - I like that he gets that many atheists are more caring than many so-called Christians.
