here's a weird thing: the "Character" headline on the NY Times android app is "Trump's Best Strategy to Beat Harris is Actually Pretty Simple" and I though 'oh gee, they changed that pretty quick' — but nope, the stupid headline is still up on the Times web site.

Bob Bowden's avatar

I wrote a comment under that opinion essay asking, is this The New York Times, or is it The Onion?

Linda Weide's avatar

What's the difference? Oh, I know. The Onion is probably going to outlast the NYT in terms of relevance.

A.J. Madison's avatar

probably? (no offense) AFAIC, NYT is already irrelevant. Cancelled my sub when Sulziebergie had his temper tantrum over Biden's interview, and the Grey Lady hasn't course corrected one bit, in fact, has gone full ahead bendix on the democracy destroying, fascist loving, delusional editorials, reality denying 100% unprofessional journalism.

Linda Weide's avatar

I was going to say that too, but The Onion is still relevant. I also canceled my NYT subscription when I was getting stupid mansplaining for things I was not talking about from their millennial toxic male editors to my complaints.

Susan P Thatcher's avatar

Same. I kept my puzzles and cooking subscriptions, tjough

Rhoda Ozen's avatar

Oh I cancelled that rag called the NYT awhile back. It absolutely is TFG spouting lies and misinformation about VP Harris.

The hate I have for TFG is palpable. I want it to stop but you know and I know that if somehow TFG lost he’d be out there doing the same things he’s done for the past 4 1/2 years. We all need some peace and quiet! I can’t go through that again. If I move to another country I’d have to sell my house, my car, and close my accounts.

It’s to the point that America is in danger and I find it difficult to believe that the polls are so close. It should be 90% for the VP.

Jeff your column allows me to see everything that happened yesterday and every day. Thanks Jeff. You’re greatly appreciated.

Linda Fairchild's avatar

I saw that! Best comment!

Patris's avatar

The Onion has higher standards

Karla's avatar

Awesome.. good for you!

Kaye Stone's avatar

The Onion is probably more factually accurate than NYT! 🤪🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

RV maxima's avatar

Oh, I would love to have read that! On occasion I have gotten very reaction-writing but never to something in The Times this outrageous. Bravo, fellow traveler!

Dave Drell's avatar

What part of his strategy is “pretty simple” ? He is the ANTI-strategy candidate/ he doesn’t listen to his

crackpot crew of advisors. Its laughable

how he is sinking his little campaign because of incompetence!

Susan P Thatcher's avatar

His strategy is to not lose. Have the people and mechanisms in place to make him President without having actually won.

Dear Satan, we know you don't want him, either, but you you threw "rock" against "paper" so get to collecting.

Linda Weide's avatar

Here is a nice response to the character question. This family seems to know whose character is good for our country and they are telling us in harmony. https://youtu.be/se-didBGn8A?si=zULzVTIa0BaqxzjG

They showed up right after Jeff's first video of the "charming character filled" Mr. Trump. Still, even if DT is wonderful, I would rather have the boys in my family follow in Tim Walz's footsteps. They would too.

Permian Extinction's avatar

It's ridiculous. He doesn't have character and he doesn't have a strategy. And WTF is wrong with NYT? Desperate much?

James Starr's avatar

Vanguard Group Inc, BlackRock Inc have controlling interest in the NYT, and since 2023 they have been leaning a heavy MAGA narrative - they want a Trump victory.

Permian Extinction's avatar

I certainly hope they are disappointed.

Rhoda Ozen's avatar

James is Eric Prince still involved? I know he changed Blackrock’s name 2 or 3 times and sold most of it.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

BlackRock, is an investment firm, Prince's Mercs were called "Blackwater" I made the same mistake, my financially savvy spouse corrected me.

Here's a blurb on the name changes.

"Academi, formerly known as Blackwater and Blackwater Worldwide, is an American private military contractor founded on December 26, 1997, by former Navy SEAL officer Erik Prince. It was renamed Xe Services in 2009, and was again renamed to Academi in 2011, after it was acquired by a group of private investors." from Wikipedia.

James Starr's avatar

not too sure on that.

Marcus Case's avatar

WTF is wrong with NYT? It's obvious. They are afraid of losing the eyes and ears of the few MAGA people, those that can read at least. They have to throw some bones to them to keep them on board, so they throw in some tasty morsels for them to eat up. They can't rely on just intelligent and sensible people to follow their content. Their new motto: "All the news that's fit to pimp!"

James Starr's avatar

well, it's not only that, but the owners of the New York Times are usually millionaires and billionaires, and they want the tax breaks that DoTard promised to give them.

I think is more of the reason.

Tardigret's avatar

Damn, the comments section for that opinion piece is already closed.

gretchen's avatar

That’s why so many of us already canceled our subscriptions. Now I keep getting special deals trying to get me to resubscribe. Not going to happen. F ‘em. Lying pos trump suckers.

Patris's avatar

Their embrace of journo-assery is both fascinating and proto-stupid.

I’m making those words up in solidarity with their new reporting standard aka ‘youmustbefuckingwithus’ style.

(But goodness I miss their book review.)

Theresa Palmer's avatar

The only character he's got is disordered. He's missing the empathy gene.

Ann Anderson's avatar

Rich Lowry is the columnist who saw sparkles flying off Sarah Palin during her nomination speech. He's a laughable fanboy who hasn't been right about anything in 20 years, and exemplifies reasonably intelligent people who convince themselves of anything in service to a political party. The New York Times beclowns itself with this dreck.

P123Sunny's avatar

Thx for the context 👍

Teri's avatar

Is Rich Lowry the "guest columnist"? Would like more info on the qmaga who wrote this!

Kathleen Weber's avatar

Rich Lowry is the editor of National Review., a journal founded by William Buckley. I just read the NYT opinion piece. it turns out that Lowery is advising Trump to attack Kamala's character as an opportunistic politician. Not claim good character for Trump.

Rick Calegari's avatar

Trump has the character of a warthog with hemorrhoids. He's flawed for life. That picture of Trump's lower teeth on Twitter yesterday further shows his rotting character. He can apply all of the putty and paint he wants but he sure as hell can't hide the meth mouth from his drug of choice. That's the kind of shit that needs to be put out there.

Dee Whitman's avatar

It's bad enough that the NYT keeps Douthat and Stephens on staff, with big salaries + bennies, without *also* spending $ to pay Lowry and comparable idiots for their occasional stupid pieces. For years I read the NYT daily, thru my library (medical debt = I can't pay to subscribe); I stopped about a week ago, and I feel much better.

I've been an ardent supporter of the legit press, and I've urged various commenters here to dial down their knee-jerk rejection of reputable entitles such as the NYT and the WaPo -- but at this point I'm weary of the questionable slant within those publications' heds and articles.

I've been a longtime reader of The Guardian and NY Mag; I've added some New Republic to the mix.

vorpal 🚫♔'s avatar

And over at the WaPo they give copious column space to Jim Geraghty and Ramesh Ponnuru both of the National Review to push this type of tripe in the guise of 'Conservative Voices'

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

That was Sally Buzbee's doing, she hired far more right-wingers, then Will Lewis fired her, for not being far enough right, and publishing his criminal activities in the UK, when working for Rupert Murdoch's tabloids.

Ann Anderson's avatar

Either way, the advice is risible.

Cindy Watter's avatar

Right, the creature with no character at all should attack his opponent’s character. An old trick.

TCinLA's avatar

Rich Lowry is commonly considered (even by wingnuts) to be the dumbest wingnut in Wingnuttia.

Major Kong's avatar

I remember that. He made some juvenile comment about sitting up straight when Palin winked. All I could think of is "Wayne's World" SCHWING!

Gayna's avatar

Where’s Melania? Is her contract up?

arne link's avatar

Oh, she was hired for the photo op at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier that happened yesterday. F'ing Putin Princess says what?

Cheryl from Maryland's avatar

Well, something sat up straight.

Cindy Watter's avatar

Bill Kristol was crazy about her, too. That was how she got on the ticket.

Kathy J's avatar

When I saw it was an Opinion piece as a guest essay by Rich Lowry, I laughed. I figured it would be about as stupid as one would expect from him. I think they need to not swing the door wide open to just anyone wanting to write a guest opinion column. If they are trying to hasten their own demise, then I suppose it makes perfect sense.

Character my ass! Please send the NYT your lovely never ending run-on sentence…..that keeps growing…………………….

Declan's avatar

Tess it just occurred to me that this headline is a perfect example of employing...'The Big Lie'. It's absurd but Donny subscribes to Hitlers maxim ....'Tell a big lie loudly & often and it will be believed' The key is A BIG LIE.

Eileen's avatar

Every bit of Donald Trump‘s existence on the world stage is Hitler 2.0. Trump is mostly like Goring. Flamboyant, greedy, and starved for recognition, medals, honors and public adoration. This sequel of the third Reich is so in your face obvious it’s stunning that it’s allowed to continue. World War II was devastating to our planet. The individual suffering alone was extreme. The barbarism of the Nazis everywhere they went; their cruelty and quest for domination is still part of the human genome. We can never forget that. Trump has no character. No bottom. And if given power again, we should expect nothing less than a reign of terror.

Rhoda Ozen's avatar

The person that started the Big Lie disinformation was Goebbels. Hitlers Propaganda Minister.

Wendy Burton's avatar

Absolutely send it. It reminds me of Chevy Chase in the Vacation movies. Epic!

Karla's avatar

Same for me every time I read it 😂

Dr J's Sanity Space's avatar

Holy moly!!! The grey lady has gone absolutely bonkers. WTF?

Said lady is drunk on the QAnon Qool Aid

bruce somers's avatar

The media has tied themselves irrevocably to the MAGA shitshow,I'm getting the plunger for both of them.

Marcus Case's avatar

The NYT new slogan, "All the news that's fit to pimp"

Mike Hammer's avatar

Watching MAGA beat the crap out of each other is glorious!

Teri's avatar

This is toxic masculinity STUPIDITY crashes into dumb-as-a-box-of-rocks idiocy. Aren't they all maga? I see anti-gay shirts. What are they arguing about? That some border fanatics came to TX from *gasp* California?

Ransom Rideout's avatar

Ellen the Wise's avatar

I hope everyone had their popcorn ready. This is getting interesting.

Greg Conners's avatar

Trump is in denial. Call it Don-ial. The NYT is enthralled with what I can only assume are the "economic" possibilities. Greed, we call it. Just greed, no denying it.

Declan's avatar

The NYT can experience economic consequences when the rest of America....that hasn't already canceled its subscription....cancels. Then those journalistic slobs can go write for the Muskogee Blade..

Greg Conners's avatar

Also, a few major advertisers.

bruce somers's avatar

David Peckerwood might have jobs available for them.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

😁👏👏😂🤣😂🤣good one!

Alexandra Pitcher's avatar

The NYT is ignoring the inconvenient fact that Trump loathes them. It doesn’t matter how much currying they do now; if Trump gets back in the White House he WILL be going after them.

Susie in OH's avatar

Precisely. They think they can hedge their bets on the Clown Show and if the Clown loses they can come back to the Dems who usually are more forgiving.

Deb Martina's avatar

Perfect, Don-ial 🙃🤣😂

P123Sunny's avatar

The Roe statements are incredible 😡 That’s why I LOVED Bill Clinton’s DNC speech where he said “Can you believe he says these things with a STRAIGHT FACE!? - you gotta admit he’s SOME actor!!!” 🇺🇸💪

Kristy Kanen's avatar

GOOD actors must be Believable, Clinton is confused if he thinks that big phony is a " good " actor. He's below

P123Sunny's avatar

Patrick Daniels aka Cromulent1's avatar

The brain worm epidemic is highly contagious, spreads like wildfire among the MSM! Appears to have leaked from a top secret lab inside RFK Jr.’s noggin somewhere in NYC!

Teri's avatar

I've been seeing a gigantic "Kennedy/Shanahan" banner near my house. After the sheer size of it, I wondered which county supervisor or county candidate it was for. Doh! I'll see tomorrow if it's still up.

Suessl's avatar

It's hard to eat spaghetti without thinking about his brain.

Interesting that he wants to be in Trump’s cabinet protecting Americans’ health. Healthy food, no vaccines, or something. No mention of global warming.

I stopped at a garage sale the other day but returned to my car after seeing multiple Trash yard signs.

Dee Whitman's avatar

I need to move, and I saw a nice-looking apt. listed online. So I googled for reviews of the landlord (it's a unit within his house), and the first hit was his FB page -- with an extremely ride meme about Biden and Harris (this was pre-July 21). I sent him a mssg thanking him for posting it, noting that I would never rent from someone so rude and ll-informed.

A pity, in that it was a very nice apartment, but (1) I'm not putting money in a MAGAt's pocket if I can avoid that, and (2) anyone who's a MAGAt is likely to be a crazy landlord. (My current LL -- lifelong GOP tho I don't think she's a MAGAt -- is a menace. She retaliates against tenants, which is illegal but she gets away with it. I googled for info on this place before I signed the lease, but there was none.)

Veronica Speedwell's avatar

Good for you!

I frequently give household goods away on "Buy Nothing" a sort of Freecycle thing with local groups that uses FB as its platform. I have taken to reviewing the profiles of people who express interest to make sure I am not passing along nice items to MAGAts. Was chatting with a co-worker; she and her husband do the same thing.

Thank God I live in a community that does not allow election signs.

Kaye Stone's avatar

Me too! One tRUMP supporter/neighbor asked me about 5 weeks ago, "Who are we supposed to vote for? TRUMP's a DIPSHIT!""...... I was so happy to hear that from him!!!

Teri's avatar

Bravo!! One on one convos are suggested frequently to help Dems convert GOP. 🏆

Sharon C Storm's avatar

“Trump can win on character”? He has no character, in fact he has no morals or ethics at all. He is nothing more than a giant toddler in an ill fitting suit. I think the NYT is losing all perception of sanity.

I would like to see Kamala give the NYT an interview, completely pants them, then walk away and continue giving her energy to independent journalists that aren't sucking at Trump's teats

Anita Smibert's avatar

WTF? Is that why he's hawking Melania's book? To pay for this character, that he must be buying? Because the whole world knows that he's morally and ethically bankrupt. Donuts McVance and Bobby Brainworm aren't going to help him. Is Ronny Jackson the staff doctor for the NY Times?

Dr J's Sanity Space's avatar

Actually, if one takes the long and mature view, it is predictable that the Maga crowd would self-destruct, sooner or later. I am reading Philip Roth’s the plot against America, fiction based on if Lindbergh had won the presidency. It is scary as hell, but I keep reminding myself that Lindbergh did not win. in 2024, with all the access to information as well as misinformation and disinformation, I maintain faith in human nature. I think there are too many of us not to let this country go down the drain.

bruce somers's avatar

The reports the person who was planning an attack on a Taylor Swift concert, was 'radicalized on the internet'...and reportedly it took only one month.

Teri's avatar

Is this the Vienna foiled attack? Several young men, under age 18, were arrested, including one who said he was "ISIS inspired".

bruce somers's avatar

Yes,go figure,a bunch of aggrieved young men, some jackass on the internet tells them to attack someone...and they do it,because they have more testosterone than brains.

Teri's avatar

What's scary as hell is, unless there is an update, they were going to attack with knives and bomb(s). Any attack is traumatic but this seemed to be to invite pure terror and trauma.

Cindy Watter's avatar

The “Trump can win on character” op-ed was written by a hack from National Review. It’s still flapdoodle, and the Times didn’t have to print it.
