fun fact:: Ms Spouse would have strenuously objected to a post like this, almost 1800 words on a single subject. she much preferred the ones that were made up of two or three shorter pieces. and I pretty much agree with her — but today there was just too much to say about maps and date centers. I hope no one got bored.

Jeff Tiedrich's avatar

you gotta admit that the title of this post is clickbaity as fuck, tho

Wendy The Druid 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈🌈's avatar

Jeff, Google maps did it.

Mapquest - No.

Apple Maps - No.

OpenStreetMaps - No.

Fuck Google.

HI2thDoc's avatar

Google wants a pass

So they kiss his capacious ass

There's nothing he won't take

This time it was a lake

What's next from that bag of gas?

Stephen Brady's avatar

I’ve been living without Google for some time now. My spam emails and texts are way down. As they say ‘sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander’, so a hearty Fuck Yeah to AOC’s suggestion. It would have taken me a day to come up with it, and she did it on the fly!

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

I actually came. up with it about a month ago. This issue is red-hot here in Ohio and our Democratic candidate for Senate, Sherrod Brown, has wisely decided to run on it. Unfortunately for his opponent, current senator Jon Useless (Husted), when he was lieutenant governor, our governor Mikey DeWhiny DeSpineless, made him the POINT PERSON for striking deals with data centers and promoting them. Uh oh.

Derek Smith's avatar

Apple Maps - Not yet...

Robot Bender's avatar

Apparently, Apple may do it too. I think Wired reported on that in the last few days.

Stephanie Lajeskie's avatar

Most of your titles are clickbaity as fuck.

Kay-El's avatar

I don’t agree. I can’t help but think that many fine folk have an axe to grind about Google Maps renaming shit (remember the Gulf of Mexico?) besides the fact that their directions often suck.

Chris Hierholzer's avatar

So is trump going to put gunboats in that lake and start blowing away fishing boats that accidently cross the invisible lines?

Chris Hierholzer's avatar

Coast guards already there. Infrastructure is in place. He's such a crazy fuck!

Zija Pulp's avatar

It’s a good thing the Edmund Fitzgerald already went down. Wait, do I have the right lake?

Susan Jane's avatar

That was Lake Superior.

Susanna J. Sturgis's avatar

Also known as Gitche Gumee. I'm going to have Lightfoot's "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" running through my head all day -- and it's primary day in Massachusetts.

rlritt's avatar

Im not sure there is actually border there. I think the lake just sits between the two countries.

rlritt's avatar

Probably unless you live in Jamaica, you won't even notice. I don't think I ever looked for directions in Kingston. I can't even remember the last time I was there.

Fuck Google ten to the ten to the one hundredth power times, which is to say fuck Google a googleplex number of times. Or, to coin a phrase, Fuckplex Google. And then Fuckplex them again and again to make sure they stay thoroughly and permanently fuckplexed to the end of time

"We apologize for deadnaming the lake" is the most concentrated dose of state-issued fuckwittery I've ever typed before coffee — and two families in Tucson are planning funerals this morning, so forgive me a moment, Im going to go puke up my coffee. Fuck this.

Fuck these guys.

fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck

DeBurgh's avatar

There's a clause in the Constitution, somewhere, that says the Postal Service is in charge of elections. I can't find it but it must be in there somewhere. Otherwise the Supreme Court would not let mailmen run elections.

Joyce's avatar

I think it's Amendment Eleventy-Seven, right after the one that establishes the Supreme Court "Justices" cannot accept bribes valued at less than six figures.

Kay-El's avatar

Their only job is to facilitate the mailing of ballots. That’s all folks.

Sharon Hudnall's avatar

So he and his fascist cabal are moving to weaponize the postal service. Brilliant. Louis DeJoy was the first devoted fuckup in the sabotage of the USPS by destroying millions of dollars of perfectly functioning mail sorting machines and neighborhood post boxes. DOGE took their pass. And now USPS is becoming an in-your-face gatekeeper for voters. The only alternatives are to drop you ballot off into a cardboard box in front of the library, hoping the trash collector doesn't tote it away. Or standing in line for hours with people (and I don't like people) being sneered at and harassed by ICE.

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

They don't have "cardboard boxes." They have big, locked, metal receptacles with safety features to prevent access and cameras. And there are very very rarely "lines for hours" (there are no lines for most early voting) so much so that when there ere, they made headlines.

Stephen Schiff's avatar

Yeah, Johan devoted his entire post to it, and my response was FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK

With apologies to whoever wrote the theme song to The Brady Bunch:

Here’s the story

Of a douche named Drumpfy

A moronic lying narcissistic “man”

He had a coke fiend son

Name of Junior

And Eric’s mind is spam.

Here’s the story

Of a pack of evil

Patel and Miller Hegseth and ol’ Harp

They’re trying hard to ruin our country

But they ain’t too sharp!

Until one day when they turned upon each other

Like hist’ry shows dictators always do

They’re like Hitler bombing all of his own Germans

And then they’ll cry BOO HOO!

The Nimrod Bunch

The Nimrod Bunch

God knows how they became

THE NIMROD BUNCH

And if you like what you just read, please subscribe to my Substack for more! And I'll subscribe back... Thanks, Jeff -- for all that you do.

HI2thDoc's avatar

On target as always! Here's one to the same melody from a few weeks back. The lyrics for the theme song were written by creator Sherwood Schwartz, who also wrote the song for his other series, Gilligan's Island. Sorry, Sherwood, wherever you are.

Here's the story

Of a brown-skinned lady

Who was married to a white supremacist

They chose to squeeze out four mixed-race children

His racist base was pissed

Here's the story

Of fake named JD

He changed his name so many times we don't know why

He claimed that he grew up a poor hillbilly

Before he went bye-bye

At Yale Law he met a classmate name of Usha

Both her parents were each an immigrant

Then these two chuds decided to get married

And turn intolerant

Now this Catholic and this Hindu MAGA couple

Promote Peter Thiel's white Christian fascist stance

JD has visions of becoming preznit

We must save ourselves from couchfuck loser Vance

That couchfuck Vance, that couchfuck Vance

We must save ourselves from shitstain couchfuck Vance

The email for the Google CEO is Sundar@Google.com. My message:

Dear Sundar:

Your latest bending of the knee to Trump is pathetic. I'm switching to Safari.

Sincerely,

Ann Anderson

Stephen Brady's avatar

I use Safari with DuckDuckGo as my search engine. Works just fine.

rlritt's avatar

Ho Don you get it? The only way seems to be thru google.

Joyce's avatar

Thanks for the link! My email: "Well, you must really, really want those data centers."

Patric Martin's avatar

Map Quest: “We aren’t changing anything.” I did though. Deleted Google Maps.

Patric Martin's avatar

I also removed Google as my search tool. I use DuckDuckGo now and this is what it says:

To remove a Google account from a Samsung phone, go to Settings > Accounts and backup > Manage accounts, select the Google account, then tap Remove account and confirm.

Cathy Wray's avatar

I have a Samsung phone and it seems connected to Google. What can I do to boycott them? Don't make your instructions too hard!!

SethTriggs's avatar

More of the lead Google is taking in the enshittification movement. But also just think about how asinine this is. Other world leaders aren't doing this kind of thing unilaterally.

The deference to America's Pilonidal Cyst is frightening and amazing to see. There's so much privilege afforded when you are the champion of the unreconstructed. The permission structure to do just...completely nonsensical things like this is ridiculous.

You would think the brain trust at Google would notice that there are places in New York State named for Lake Ontario and that lake is the genesis of so many toponyms...the Lake Ontario State Parkway, both a county and a township are named Ontario, and there's even a service area on the Thruway named for Ontario.

We live in the stupidest time, Gilded Age 2.0. And what's most galling is we know better.

I think AOC’s idea for building a data center near Mar-A-Lardo is brilliant and spot-on. We should figure a way to extend this. As an American (that descriptor only loosely applies to Rump because he doesn’t care what nationality he is as long as it’s attached to a country where he can be a banana republic dictator), he should have to share in all of the conditions he’s forced the rest of us into.

Fuck ‘im.

Stephen Brady's avatar

I read somewhere that one company had proposed a floating data center. Maybe they can anchor it 50’ off shore of Merde á Lardo.

sharon Maxey's avatar

Yes. In Rump’s line of sight.

"China Powers AI Boom with Undersea Data Centers", Scientific American,

https://www.scientificamerican.com › article › china-pow...Jul 16, 2025 —

China is pulling ahead of the rest of the world in sinking data centers that power AI into the ocean as an alternate way to keep them cool.

So the Sultan of Stupid thinks planting data centers in our backyards is a way to counter China's superior planning capabilities ...

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

It wasn't her idea — it's been making the rounds for a while.

Liz and Max the No. 1 Cat's avatar

The noise from wind turbines causes cancer and drives whales crazy, but the noise from data centers is a soothing lullaby, right? I know, I know, consistency is not Fuckwit's strong suit.

Stephen Brady's avatar

They are saying in the Bluegrass that the noise keeps Thoroughbred Horses from breeding.

rlritt's avatar

Who wants a lot of crappy noise when youre starting to get romantic?

Stephen Brady's avatar

Thoroughbreds are notoriously skittisn critters.

A data center adjacent to every tPLUMP golf course. Then everything and everyone there will be smart and rich.

And, Sergey Brin is a disgusting thug, so little wonder Google led the charge to “rename” Lake Ontario. I, like thousands of others immediately deleted Google “maps” and installed Mapquest.

With the stroke of a pen, tPLUMP insulted every Canadian and once again, made the US the laughing stock of the world.

Dear god, please make this shit stop.

HI2thDoc's avatar

Data centers powered by windmills, next to every single one of his golf courses. A smashing idea, Angie! And hey, ICE, get on that Brin fella. His name sounds suspiciously Russian.

SeekingReason's avatar

Exodus from Google maps and other google products!

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

I hear there's space in Bedminster right next to Ivana's grave.

Jennifer's avatar

I may be slightly jaded and cynical but could, perhaps, the rush for data centers be somehow connected to Trump declaring a national emergency about the power grid? 🤔

Something shady is up, and it has NOTHING to do with protecting anyone but him and rich tech assholes he's cozying up to.

Angie Longenecker's avatar

Something “shady” is always up with tPLUMPkins. What’s new?

WildKnitter's avatar

Love your columns...they're the highlight of my day. I'm happy to report that Apple Maps does not appear to have caved to the Orange Cheeto. I just searched there, and it still shows "Lake Ontario."

Kathy hatcher's avatar

for now. They caved on Gulf of Mexico

Magic Earth is a good app with voice assistant for driving, and Organic Maps can be download for any specific area or state which then allows you to use it without having to be online. Organic Maps is great for finding trails to hike and such also.

Susan Niemann's avatar

I read somewhere that Mapquest is the number one app being dowloaded right now. I downloaded it and am enjoying a British male voice tell me where to go. 😂

Fuck Google. And this evil regime.

Terrific photos of Claudia...waiting for brunch to be served by her devoted husband. ❤️❤️

Love that!
