There is no such thing as a "shingles outbreak". Once you have had chicken pox, the virus lives dormant along your spinal column. That’s what we did. My husband and I (late 70’s) both had chicken pox as kids. No vaccine then. So we got the shingles vaccine - both of them because they evidently upgraded it to a two part deal. Anyway, it wasn’t free like the other vaccines but the price is well worth it if it means you don’t get it. Also, my two kids had chicken pox and my son got shingles in his early 40’s. When I asked him why he didn’t get the shingles vaccine, he said you have to be 50 to get it. So he’s not eligible until this year. Get vaccinated!

Can we talk about flu too?

BREAKING: RFK Jr. lays the groundwork for a public health crisis of historic proportions as his FDA cancels its crucial annual meeting with the panel of scientific health experts that plans next year's flu vaccinations.

The moment we all feared is finally arriving...

According to The New York Times, the Food and Drug Administration — which falls under RFK Jr.'s purview as Health Secretary — sent an email to the Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee informing them of the unceremonious cancellation of the meeting.

No explanation was provided for the cancellation but RFK Jr. is well known for his deeply unscientific anti-vax positions. The meeting had been scheduled for March 13th.

Dr. Paul Offit of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, a member of the committee, warned that the cancellation could interfere with or even delay the production of lifesaving influenza vaccines.

"It’s a six-month production cycle. So one can only assume that we’re not picking flu strains this year," said Dr. Offit.

Flu strains are usually chosen during the F.D.A. meeting which customarily occurs in February or March using data obtained from the World Health Organization.

Of course, Trump ended the United States' relationship with the WHO at the beginning of his administration so the panel would have had their work cut out for them even if the meeting had not been cancelled.

Production of the vaccines is supposed to begin in June but that can't happen until the strains are selected. It's unclear when, if at all, that will happen now.

"The stakes are incredibly high," said Richard Hughes, an attorney for several vaccine makers.

According to C.D.C. numbers, 86 children and 19,000 adults died from the flu this season. Another 430,000 people were hospitalized. If the vaccines are not produced during this cycle, those numbers could skyrocket to record numbers — overwhelming hospitals and leading to mass deaths.

I wondered about this chain of command thing and I think the workaround during the first admin was the JAGS, which they just canned. They sort out what's a legal vs illegal order, so I wonder how far up people need to be to be able to discriminate and resist. I also assume the consequences are very serious. I do wonder if there are people who are so against hegs that they would refuse an order from him. I think it would have to be a serious breach, because once it's done something probably unravels in a dark way.

I have family in Santa Cruz since the 60s and I lived there for a decade and I miss Ca and my friends a lot. Newsom should find a way to pick up CA marbles and hold them, break the Fed tax code. No taxation without representation. Maybe a whole other level tea party. CA could ship it's produce to blue states and Canada and nationalize silicon valley - whatever the state equivalent would be - seize the assets - but it's probably too radical for CA to secede. The only problem is no military defense. This is what the second amendment is about.

So many well intentioned people who want peace and prosperity for everyone, and there is enough to go around, but the sloth and greed is unsustainable and incompatible with human rights. These usurpers are making the argument against their existence all the clearer. Godspeed to Newsom to figure out what to do next.

I've been advocating for California, West Coast, secession, maybe join with British Columbia for about two months now, but no one seems to want to jump. I know Newsom is busy, but LA is going to have to rebuild itself. California is the fourth or fifth largest economy in the world, and the nine county Bay Area is the 17th largest economy in the world. Four of the 10 wealthiest people in the world live here. California pays 69% of the federal taxes, thus supporting all of the red states except Texas. I don't know where you are now, but you should come back. California has already hit the 2030 international climate goals.

I'm always reminded of this quote when this comes up because it is so spot on:

“The unborn” are a convenient group of people to advocate for. They never make demands of you; they are morally uncomplicated, unlike the incarcerated, addicted, or the chronically poor; they don’t resent your condescension or complain that you are not politically correct; unlike widows, they don’t ask you to question patriarchy; unlike orphans, they don’t need money, education, or childcare; unlike aliens, they don’t bring all that racial, cultural, and religious baggage that you dislike; they allow you to feel good about yourself without any work at creating or maintaining relationships; and when they are born, you can forget about them, because they cease to be unborn. You can love the unborn and advocate for them without substantially challenging your own wealth, power, or privilege, without re-imagining social structures, apologizing, or making reparations to anyone. They are, in short, the perfect people to love if you want to claim you love Jesus, but actually dislike people who breathe. Prisoners? Immigrants? The sick? The poor? Widows? Orphans? All the groups that are specifically mentioned in the Bible? They all get thrown under the bus for the unborn.”
