Republican Reps. Thomas Massie, Brian Fitzpatrick, Tom Barrett and Warren Davidson crossed party lines to support the resolution.

Anyone here who also reads Heather Cox Richardson's Substack "Letter From an American" will have read today about Rep Jim McGovern's fabulous speech. (If you haven't, look it up!)

Please call his office and thank him for his frank message to America!

DC OFFICE

202 225 6101

Ahem..."thank you for your attention to this matter"

EDIT: IF YOU CALL RIGHT NOW YOU WILL GET AN ACTUAL AIDE ON THE PHONE. SHE SAYS HE IS GETTING MANY CALLS, BUT please please please ADD YOUR THANKS, REGARDLESS IF YOU AREN'T A CONSTITUENT!

Roberta Yetto's avatar

Thank You for the share, I read Heather's Letter very very scary, people need to know whats going on. 47 needs to go, he has no idea! The people around him are pulling his strings.

Miselle's avatar

Absolutely, so I forward the Letter onto 4 folks, and print it out for my elder sister without internet.

(BTW, I, too, am a retired medical worker and life long Democrat. I'm sure that like me, this administration's cuts in Medicaid drive you nuts.)

Eileen's avatar

I just spoke to someone at his office! She read HCR‘s newsletter. I told her to talk to other staffers so that more leadership stands tall and supports the truth about our fascist government and doesn’t bob and weave around what’s really happening in this country.

LINDA ADAMS's avatar

I called. I did get an actual person. That hardly ever happens.

Miselle's avatar

True that! Thune's office NEVER picks up, and I leave my email address and they NEVER email me. Dirty stinkin' dogs!!

devourerofpancakes's avatar

Republicans don't want to hear from constituents. Ewww.

celeste k.'s avatar

they're cowards, and they're trying to keep their jobs. Let's help them fail at that by voting blue in Nov. Then, when the ship is righted, we can vote out the democratic corporate ass kissers as well.

One thing at a time.

Abby From Maine's avatar

S2F Collins apparently now only responds to positive comments. I suspect she has been able to cut way down on office staff!

Miselle's avatar

Now, THAT is funny! And sadly, probably true.

Daniel M Kimmel's avatar

Sad to say my so-called progressive reps don't respond either: Warren, Markey, Pressley.

Occassionally Pressley sends some non-responsive boilerplate and signs off -- contemptuously -- "in solidarity."

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

Did you mean McGovern? I'm not sure who Jim McGowan is. I looked him up and can't find him.

Miselle's avatar

YES! My bad! I will correct it immediately!

Natalia Lincoln's avatar

Great speech! Thanks for the tip :)

Loren Santow's avatar

Yep. Loud shoutout to Rep Jim McGovern. Though his shaming will be lost on the shameless, the rest of us get our spines strengthened.

Julie's avatar

I read HCR every day and the speech was a masterpiece and should be said OUT LOUD in various iterations by a phalanx of Democrats on the daily.

macwithhisbooks's avatar

I read that. Marvelous. Time to call it what it is.

SPW's avatar

Yes. It was good to read it. Will call 👍🏻.

Desi Lydic is hilarious. Spot on. Videos similar to this -- with short clips side-by-side of Republicans being complete idiots -- should be campaign ads.

Linda Weide's avatar

Great idea, Will. I think Jeff probably could make them. He is gifted in that way. It needs to include Hegseth wrangling the skateboard.

Tess's avatar

That was excellent! Thanks for the link!

rlritt's avatar

I love her. She's a riot.

rlritt's avatar

Do you think he care what Congress wants?

Linda Weide's avatar

I think that gif is going to make this guy at Marietta Georgia's high school famous. They will invite him on SNL for sure to imitate Trump.

Stuart's avatar

Don't forget that young woman who, a few years back, so flawlessly mimed Trump's famous "person, woman, man, camera, TV" remarks that her show-biz career suddenly took off.

michellefromchicago's avatar

Sarah Cooper! Great stuff

Linda Weide's avatar

Yes. I was thinking of her when I said it. Jeff just catches these things perfectly.

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

I've never seen such a bunch of bored high schoolers, not even at my high school's mandatory pep assemblies (had to be mandatory because we were NOT a sports power, to say the least, and nobody went to games.)

rlritt's avatar

You must have gone to my high school. (Famous alumni Merrick Garland) Not a sports powerhouse at all.

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

Our most famous alumni were the folk singers Fred and Ed Holstein, Nobel Prize winner James Watson who discovered DNA — and groupie Cynthia Plastercaster, who was close to my year but I don't remember her. I recall our principal saying at a pep assembly, "Ok, so our football team hasn't won a game and our basketball team is 2-18. But we have the city champion debate team and the Illinois champion chess team." Rah rah. Our basketball team my senior year got written up in the Chicago Sun Times for having the highest grade point average of any public high school basketball team in the city. I think a couple of them went to Harvard.

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

I just looked up my high school and see it produced a couple of other famous people I wasn't aware of: TV financial advisor Suze Orman who was just behind my sister's class, and .... (gulp) the evil billionaire Larry Ellison who is in cahoots with Trump in trying to destroy our fair, independent media, a very un-south side Chicago thing to do. He's also a close personal friend of Netanyahu, very interesting given the demographic of our neighborhood then. He was ahead of me, didn't know him.

Linda Weide's avatar

When my daughter was little like in 3rd grade, she got into watching Susie Orman on PBS doing her managing your money workshops. My daughter was telling me how she was going to start a Roth IRA when she was 21. That might be because I watched Suze when I was pregnant with her and had insomnia. Ironically she is now at Uni in Germany and in Germany Roths don't give any tax benefits, so a different investment approach might be needed.

rlritt's avatar

Wow. I worked for Ed and Fred Holstein. At Somebody Else's Troubles.

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

I think they were a bit ahead of me but definitely in my cohort.

Linda Weide's avatar

I remember the Holsteins. Didn't they perform at the Earle of Old Town?

At my school they would say that when people were in high school they thought they were good at sports and bad academically, and when they got to college they would realize they were bad at sports and good academically. My school started with nursery school and went through to 12th grade. I don't know who the famous alumni are.

rlritt's avatar

I worked there too. They owned Somebody Else's Trouble. I think the singer Steve Goodman owned part of it too. So did Earl.

Sue Martin's avatar

I don't know of my highschool ever spawned any celebrities, but Andy Griffith was once a teacher there.

Wendymae's avatar

Okay, now I had to google what famous people went to my high school and I had no idea that Thomas Pynchon was from my town! Boxer Howard Davis Jr. also and I now have a vague memory of one of his brothers being in my class. Singer Ashanti, who I would not know if I passed her on the street.

Linda Weide's avatar

Andrea Ghez, 2020 Nobel Prize winner in Physics went to my school. Maria Hinajosa of NPR went to my school. There are some more listed in Wikipedia, but I don't know that people would know most of them or consider them famous.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4pcZdJcpbs

Jane's avatar

👏👏👏😂

insert_something_creative's avatar

The kid who did the accordion hands was perfect. Knowing how teenagers can be, it would have been hilarious if they picked up on it and all started doing it.

I also love how bored they all looked! I mean, wouldn't you be? I'd rather listen to a fork in a garbage disposal for an hour than listen to Demented Donny ramble on with his insane garbage for even 5 minutes. If I was there, noise cancelling headphones would have been ON the entire time. It seems like child abuse to subject them to that.

Also, did anyone notice the toddler in the video about the healthcare plan? I know it's not the most important thing, but they're at a high school. Whose baby is that? At least he got to play on an iPad.

Linda Weide's avatar

While we know that the young brain is overstimulated by an iPhone, I could understand why the mom had given it to him. She was looking too. However, I do not understand why she had her child there. Is this a matter of being star struck and having no other child care?

insert_something_creative's avatar

Oh, I totally understand the part about giving the kid the phone/iPad to distract them from listening to Trump. I'm more confused why a toddler is at a high school rally or whatever in the first place, unless non-students were invited.

I know there are teen moms, of course, but that kid looks like he's at least 3 and I didn't know they let them go to school with the parents.

Linda Weide's avatar

I wonder who was invited to this, and whether one got to opt out. Seems to me people were opting out in their own ways while there. With mom and young child there, seems to be more than just the school community, unless the mom was star struck and wanted her child to be able to say he was there.

I am not a fan of giving young children phones and ipads at an age before it is advocated that they watch tv. We know that young brains being overstimulated like that have a harder time calming themselves down, and when they get to school, will have a harder time paying attention.

There should be parenting conventional wisdom about tech that seems to be missing from the parental lexicon of the parents today. I have seen what I consider to be 2-year-olds on the bus where I live in their strollers on the phone looking at programs that look like they are behind the wheel of a fast car. What that is doing to their young brains is worrisome.

That Georgia mom was not thinking about the long term effects of the phone on her child's brain, and perhaps she is not a deep thinker. That might explain how she ended up at a Trump rally.

insert_something_creative's avatar

I 100% agree on giving young kids screens, but if it meant keeping my young kid from listening/paying attention to Trump, I'd make a single exception. Earplugs would be a better option but you gotta do what you gotta do. A Sesame Street or Mr. Rogers episode about caring and sharing is better than listening to the poisonous garbage you know is gonna come out of Trump's mouth.

That's assuming they were forced to be there though. As you said, she could be a Trump fan and went on purpose. If that's the case, she's a bad parent on multiple fronts — bringing her kid AND giving him the iPad.

He might possibly be going on about Communists because he (or one of his staff) remembers Reagan always going about Communists and thinks its a winning strategy.

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

The big joke is that for decades the U.S. Communist Party has consisted of about two dozen pedantic old guys who argue with each other and keep splitting into factions. There are places where you can find vestiges of them: if you go to a rally such as No Kings, you may have encountered the "refuse" people ("refuse and resist") who usually set up just outside the rally. The Communist Party is involved in that.

It (the ACA aka Obamacare) was only left in place because John McCain showed up after brain surgery for a cancerous tumor and voted down on repealing it as the deciding vote. Still, trump and the GOP have whittled away at most pieces of the ACA until it is just a shadow of what it formerly was.
