I'm going to be an ACLU poll watcher tomorrow (complete with an official ACLU vest, to make me an even clearer target, here in South Dakota), and am quite prepared to deal with whatever bozos come my way. It helps that I'm a 70 year old retired history professor who also worked for the judicial system in a couple of states, which means I don't take crap from anybody any more.

TJTarheel's avatar

I’m going up there to help him.

Unless it’s too cold.

Or I have appointments

Or you know anything could happen but otherwise he can count on me. For sure. If nothing happens…

Cat Cafe's avatar

She is a "she" which is even BRAVER and BETTER! Bravo, CroneEver! (I too am a fervent crone, and believe me NO ONE "gives no fucks" like us elder crones!)

TJTarheel's avatar

When you think about where we’ve been and what we’ve had to face and fight in the past, I was a child of the 70’s and yes good music good boones farm wine but my first interview i was asked who’d keep my children? How will I get to work? And since your husband works here if there is conflict we’ll have to let you go because, well because, um we’ll have to.

TJTarheel's avatar

Oh hell no they don’t because we don’t give a shit who says what or plays on first or what’s on second. Wait. Where was I? Oh and a short memory is a must for deniability but we don’t mind holding our wrist out for the bracelets either, as long as they’re padded. I don’t mind but authur doesn’t like the metal

HulitC's avatar

You’re a hero too!

HI2thDoc's avatar

Thank you for your commitment to our democracy. Respect. 🤜🏽🤛🏽

Mary Hall's avatar

Yay you! The ACLU is the most American organization in existence. I am a longtime, proud, card-carrying member of the ACLU and they are a beneficiary in my Will.

Marla's avatar

I worked fo them for a while, back in the early aughts. Been a member since 1975 and still am a Guardian of Liberty. They do rock.

TJTarheel's avatar

I’d give anything to join you. I’m 65 but I worked with men for thirty years so I got tha thick skin-maybe not literally but you know…

Gratitude and respect. And you be careful. This cruddy bunch gives massive sucker punches.

Still, please be careful because teenage drump supporters are beating up 70+ year old women.

Nice! Suppprt you 100 percent!! I am here in South Dakota too! Ready for the pickup trucks rolling through the streets with their maga shit flying. There is a lot more blue yard signs than last time. Talked at length with my district Democratic representative. The ONLY candidate to knock on my door! Let's kick butt tomorrow!

Along with Jeff and quite a few others, I really can't wait to read them every day.

Good for you! That's a very important thing to do.

Kay-El's avatar

I’ve got my stock pot as a helmet, my wooden baseball bat as my protection and an extra case of water at the ready if shit goes south. I’m leaving my Harris/Walz sign up just to add an element of danger and intrigue.

nkrempa's avatar

ROCK ON, dear lady!!! Hubby wouldn't let me put up Harris merch in our deeply red rural neighborhood, but I've got my eye on those yahoos. Fortunately, they had no qualms about advertising their stupidity. :D

KL Pierce's avatar

Why does your husband get the final say? Damn! Julia Roberts was right. 😩

nkrempa's avatar

Because he's the one that has to replace the garbage box and mailbox when the MAGAts destroy the stuff out by the road. We got tired of having to continually replace those items and call the police when our property was targeted because of our political beliefs.

insert_something_creative's avatar

Yeah, that's totally fair and I'm sorry you have to put up with the stupid assholes who did that.

nkrempa's avatar

Thank you. I'm sorry too, since I was rather fond of advertising for my preferred candidates, but it got expensive and time consuming. *sigh*

Doc Blase''s avatar

Marty's avatar

What I was thinking!

Patrick Daniels aka Cromulent1's avatar

My town is comprised of a plethora of red(neck) and undeniably peerless in vacuous idiocy… meaning my yard signs have been stolen multiple times! I hear you nk!!

Yarnartist's avatar

On a recent episode of The Daily Show, when Michael Kosta was hosting, th kid ere was a video about a woman whose Harris/Walz signs were stolen so much, she bought little tracking devices and attached them to the replacement signs. I guess she had let the police know she was doing this; they caught up with the thief, and it was a mother with her two teenaged boys. The woman was floored that they would actually arrest her for stealing the signs. When police told her it was a felony, she said, “Oh, it is not! Just take them and go!” They took them, but they took her, too, in handcuffs. It was a beautiful thing!

Andrea Fruggiero's avatar

My husband is also being extra cautious - and we live in a VERY BLUE state. But we do have some folks in the area that are not voting for democracy. He just wants to keep his 77 year old wife safe.

nkrempa's avatar

Good for him!! I'm only 70, so the hubby figures I can handle myself, lol. Actually, he's more concerned about the property damage, since we both work outside the home 6 days/week. And our daughter still lives with us, so that's a consideration as well. <3

Doc Blase''s avatar

Sometimes discretion is the better part of valor.

Down in Fort Worth a neighbor threw a brick through our front room window because they didn't like our friend's playing the Beatle's Lady Madonna riff over and over on his Fender Rhodes piano.

nkrempa's avatar

Yup. We've lived here for 40 years... never had this problem until 2016. Suddenly, yard signs disappear, mailbox is destroyed, bashed, ripped out of the ground. I'll deal with that, though, cuz front room windows are hella expensive!! That's horrible!

D:

Doc Blase''s avatar

They missed Michael by a few feet. "Surprisingly" when we went outside to see who did it, the street was empty.

Since then, I can't hear that song without remembering that day.

Sorry to hear of this bullshit on your place. Once their avatar is defeated, I think the MAGA 'power' will fade some.

There will be others who seek to replace it.

Yup, getting my torch and pitchfork ready:-) For some inexplicable reason (JK - it's stupidity), they think we won't or can't fight.

Nancy Potter's avatar

Trump would find out how many of us women he wants to force his "protection" on are actually armed already.

T L Mills's avatar

We are committed Dems in a very red rural area. We are peaceable people...but we have a 30-06 that resides in a safe but I know how to load and shoot as well as my spouse. Having said that, I very much doubt we will need to "defend da' castle"...but we certainly can, should it become necessary. I'm an election worker for this tiny rural town and I will be at the poll location most of the day. It will be very busy and VERY interesting, I'm sure...but no one expects anything worse than someone being annoyingly mouthy. Most of our residents know our town election official is a VERY formidable woman.

Andrea Fruggiero's avatar

I'm a 77 yo woman, but no gun. I ask my husband if we should get one. He was a Coastie for 30+ years and carried a gun in his job. He doesn't WANT a gun so we don't have one (yet? - never say never!)

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

Hairspray + lighter equals flamethrower.

insert_something_creative's avatar

Yeah, because we don't fetishize guns like they do. Like those Christmas cards with the whole family, kids and all, loaded for bear and cosplaying like they're in some kind of dumbass action movie.

Doc Blase''s avatar

Back when I worked corporate security, the head of our department (former BATF agent) used to call them "barrel suckers".

"and we vote for my friend and your friend, Donald Trump Junior. Donald Trump. Jonald J. Trump.”

JFC. I was wondering what happened to Good Old Herschal. 🤣🤣 Still stupid. I'm spent with this whole damned election and embarrassing era of our history. My idiot brother tried to "both sides" me this morning and I'm in an even worse mood. Let's win and then welcome Jack Smith to finish things up. ✌️

Kate's avatar

So fucking sick of the both sides shit I am getting from strangers too—as soon as they say that I KNOW which side they are on, and it isn’t democracy’s.

Susan Niemann's avatar

Exactly right. It tells me they dont/cant/wont read, that their value system is very low, and they are just stupid. There. I said it. 😂😂

steve robertshaw's avatar

(does your bother read this?) honestly, a trump voter in 2020 or 2024 (they were voting for a TV celebrity in 2016, I mean this IS America!) is, as you say, either willfully ignorant of what's going on or just too dumb to comprehend it.

Susan Niemann's avatar

He can barely read. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Declan's avatar

The 'both sideisms' is a classic Russian Putin tactic. Trump has used all of them. Ya know what made him dangerous. He had the most evil creatures as role models. His Dad, Roy Cohn, Putin, Orban....

Cathy 98280's avatar

I keep seeing comments (in WaPo and NYT) that say we should “feel empathy” or “not sneer” at those who vote for Trump - unh-unh - I think they’re worth every bit of derision I feel for them. And I despise the idea they might saddle us with that orange carbuncle yet again.

Kate's avatar

Those days are long gone—these people are literally trying to destroy the country because of their own petty grievances, as well as their inability or unwillingness to understand the bigger picture, zero empathy!

Cathy 98280's avatar

And, yes I have canceled my WaPo subscription (it’s still good through January) and am seriously leaning toward doing the same with the NYT.

JChambers's avatar

I'm with you. My subscription to WaPo runs out early next year, and then I'm gone. I won't consider re-upping unless Lewis is fired, and the rest of the Murdochian transplants are also gone. Bezos needs to sell. Nothing they report on can be believed anymore.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

Do it, they have all failed democracy. Joe Kahn of The NYT said "it's not their job to defend democracy!" and don't deserve to be relevant.

Hannah's avatar

But Cathy, they're so loving towards us. You know, Peace, Love and... fuck 'em.

Old Man's avatar

Who reads the WaPo anymore? Not me.

Michelle Vancura's avatar

Absolutely! I had the same idiot experience with two members of my family yesterday. Fortunately, the other 14 eligible voters in our family cancelled out their two votes. I’m so looking forward to the end of this election, Kamala winning, and the orange convict being sentenced this month and further prosecutions. I’m exhausted!!

Walt Svirsky's avatar

Dealing with MAGATS in one’s family is damn near impossible. I’ve got 3 siblings that are cult members and it’s becoming difficult to have a neutral conversation with them. Don-old has done so much damage, not only to our country, but to many people’s family unit, as well.

Jenny's avatar

My parents don't vote because of their religion, but that doesn't stop them from watching Fox News and OAN. My brother is a cultist through and through...Qanon, flat-earther, the whole 9 yards. I love my family dearly, I just don't understand how they are so hood-winked. They should KNOW BETTER. Especially my parents who know bible scripture and know about the prophecies of the anti-christ. It just kills me. I can't even have political talk around them at all. I just keep it to surface things.

Hannah's avatar

Jenny, just out of curiosity, what religion does not allow voting. First time in my life I have heard that. And I studied religions a long time ago.

Jenny's avatar

it's not that it's not "allowed" it's more like they abstain from being "of the world". They are an offshoot of Jehovah's Witness, but from LONG ago. Like totally different. They follow someone that broke off from JW's named Charles Taze Russell. They call themselves the Bible Students. I grew up in this, but as soon as I had to 'stay home and do homework'...I never really went back except for conventions because I got to see all the kids and "aunts & uncles" that I grew up with from all over the world. They are all very dear people, just very different from me and my values.

Hannah's avatar

Jenny, thank you. That's actually pretty interesting.

Deb Martina's avatar

I just refuse to talk politics. There's no getting through the brainwashing 🤦

consciousegalitarian's avatar

I agree with you, Walter. I've been having pangs of guilt this morning asking myself what more I could have done earlier in the run-up to November 5th. Why oh why did I not try to call my brother's wife in TX and my husband's brother, sister, and nieces in Oklahoma to have a friendly (maybe) conversation about the election and what America will look like under the Harris vs. Trump administrations? I hope I'm not kicking myself about this for 4 years

Walt Svirsky's avatar

I’m excited about Texas and the end of Ted Cruz. Colin Allred has been kicking Ted’s ass all over the Lone Star state.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

I hear you I have two phony christian (prosperity gospel) brothers. I can't discuss much more than the weather with, and I have not bothered to mention I fall under the LGBTQ umbrella to them, although my non-religious sisters I told roughly when I figured it out.

Susan Niemann's avatar

P123Sunny's avatar

For-Profit News! They should say it EVERY TIME…😒

Mary Hall's avatar

'zackly! Whenever someone touts efforts to privatize government, I suggest that they use the word "profitize" because businesses need to make a profit to survive, government does not. Ergo, everything will be more expensive.

Old Man's avatar

Susan Niemann's avatar

Jodi Richard's avatar

This was in a text from my mother this morning. It was surrounded by lots of other “usual stuff” they throw at you…”Who ever you are I am beginning to think you are the problem with society. You think you know everything, you are educated in everything and you are better than someone who may not think the same as you. You are trying to shove your beliefs down everyone’s throats if they don’t agree with you. It sounds as though you maybe a follower.”

Susan Niemann's avatar

A follower? Of what/who? I’m so sorry Jodi. This sounds like something my mother might have said to me. But you know what? We are educated and we have morals and standards. I won’t ever apologize for that.

Patrick Daniels aka Cromulent1's avatar

No apologies are necessary when calling a Nazi a Nazi!

Janet's avatar

Wow. How sad is it that your mom would send that to you. 😢

Ellis Weiner's avatar

That "you think you are better than someone who..." is the key term. I seriously doubt you have ever said to your mother, "I think I'm better than you." That whole category--thinking one is "better"--is an expression of their insecurity. THEY think you're better than they are (whatever "better" means). I know we've said a million times, "It's always projection with these people," but that's because it's always projection with these people.

Hence, too, their adoration of Trump, who trashes decency itself. They worship the worst person on earth because, if he's in charge, nobody is better or worse than anybody. Everybody's crap. So if THEY'RE crap (which they unconsciously fear), it's okay.

Jodi Richard's avatar

Wow! So well said! Thank you.

Kate's avatar

Uugh. So sorry. A friend was telling me about a man who was a member of the Moonie cult and is now (deprogrammed) a psychiatrist lecturing about this Trump business and he said it's 100% a cult and the best we can do is keep asking them why they think what they do, keep asking questions and keep the space open for them to come to their senses themselves. In sales we would always say, it takes and act of God to change someone's mind, so you sell to people like yourself and don't bother trying to convince others, let them come around. Sometimes they don't, but sometimes they do. Take care of yourself in the meantime.

I really thought the 11th Circuit Court would slap down the loosest of Cannon’s when she unilaterally put the kabosh on the second most obvious crime committed by Don-old (after the insurrection).

How does one corrupt and newly appointed judge overrule the will of the American people? Trump stole top secret classified documents and distributed them to foreigners for fun and profit!

Washington State has a very big problem, even in the saner areas. Some parts of the country are full-on overrun by this plague. Like locusts.

Patrick Daniels aka Cromulent1's avatar

Every law enforcement office has been militarized…truly a sad state of affairs for this nation Chris!

Yes - it was in a small town in Florida - that got smacked by a spin-off tornado (pun intended) that destroyed the sheriff’s office! 😁😂

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

Wasn't it like the next day?

Hannah's avatar

Couldn't make that stuff up.

Teri's avatar

Lisa, that sounds familiar now that you mention it.

Alison Parker's avatar

That sheriff looks like someone who has made more than one comment online asking why only Black people get to say the n-word.

Kay-El's avatar

I blame Joe “Pink Underwear” Arpaio for starting this trend or at least enabling it to take hold.

Hannah's avatar

Kay-El, we had a swinging dick sheriff long before AZ. Now he is running for governor. He won't win. Not even close.

Kay-El's avatar

Those guys are the absolute worst. Glad he’s going to get creamed.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

He's a pretty famous nutbar, yeah.

I’ve gone from “I’m sorry to tell you the tests show cancer” pessimism to “Our oncology team will cure you on Tuesday” optimism.

Back to canvassing in the rain.

SuNew's avatar

Your canvassing in the rain (x thousands of other volunteers) is exactly WHY the cancer will be cured.

Thank you!!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Hannah's avatar

Thank you for your service.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

Hugs to you ..if you want them (I'm all about consent.)

David Olson's avatar

I hope for the day soon when those who enabled pay some price for their transgressions. Those politicians pay the full due for their Faustian bargain to retain office. Those “news” agencies and commentators who espoused and gave voice to wannabe dictator’s hate. And a man who egregiously betrayed his country and oath of office, finally banished from polite society. That is a future tomorrow starting with the current tomorrow.

Nancy Potter's avatar

What did Liz Cheney say about their shame living forever? Sadly, even if Trump leaves the scene, and Republicans try to pretend it was all just an 8-year bad dream, the people who were all too willing to attach their lips to Trump's butt will be welcomed back into and given leadership in the party as if nothing ever happened.

Hannah's avatar

Nancy, you are right. It's gonna take a generation at least.

David A Pitock's avatar

Nauseating thought, but true

Patrick Daniels aka Cromulent1's avatar

I’ve always wondered what happened to all of the Epstein’s evidence, likely given to Trump by the criminally corrupt AG Bill Barr… he has the goods on all who show fealty to him for a reason David, I’m hopeful of the same!!

David Olson's avatar

I have my conspiracy theory too. First what it may reveal re: Trump. Second, what it may reveal re: others. I don’t think we ever know.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

I suspect that's what he has on some republicans. Bill Barr just wanted to get the blackmail pics on his dad, who shared Epstein's predilection.

I’m visioning Kamala 357 Electoral Votes. 🧘⭐️🇺🇸

Michelle Vancura's avatar

That would be fantastic! Obama won 365 electoral votes in 2008. Anything is possible!!

Susan Niemann's avatar

Yes, please. Just win!!!

Marlene Lerner-Bigley (CA)'s avatar

That number really should surpass Biden’s by that and much more since we have some Repubs and Independents on our side.

SuNew's avatar

In my heart of hearts, I want over 400. Fucking Bush Sr did it, why not the amazing Kamala???

markwilson67's avatar

Fuck him. Fuck them. Long hard and fast. And not in a good way. Hopefully, this long national nightmare will be over soon. And we can go back to our shitty, imperfect Republic and work on it.

Gloria J. Maloney's avatar

Yes. We'll get to work on it.

HI2thDoc's avatar

I wish he wouldn'ta left the WH either. The sight of the Secret Service physically removing him from the premises woulda been priceless.

Walt Svirsky's avatar

Yeah, but those Secret Service agents are no longer trustworthy. Those fuckers deleted all of their text messages from the time of the insurrection. Did any heads roll?

Nah. They are still in the SS and as a result, I trust them not at all.

GailyC's avatar

If the investigation into the SS texts being deleted hasn’t been made public, what does that say about the likelihood of something really disturbing going on with them? Why haven’t any well known investigative reporters chimed in about this?

Carrie Duncan's avatar

I'm pinning my hopes on it being one of those investigations with integrity and no leaks. Though there should have been some bad actors benched in the meantime, for sure.

Walt Svirsky's avatar

Exactly, Gally! 💯

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

Because corporate media no longer does "investigative journalism" they let New Republic, or Propublica, do it, then steal it and act like it is theirs.

Rick A.'s avatar

Agree 100%! Deleted text messages and they got away with it. I am sick of no accountability anywhere from Trump to Hawley and Cruz to Jordan and Scott Perry, etc. to Eastman and Giuliani to the Secret Service. They should all be in jail!! These past 8 years have been insane and I want it to be over………..

HI2thDoc's avatar

They should all be in jail

HI2thDoc's avatar

Some are acting like the original SS

Walt Svirsky's avatar

The Secret Service has always been above reproach. What the hell happened?

Hannah's avatar

Remember the ones who got caught being too drunk to work. Another group thought it would be funny to hire prostitutes. They got caught. They are just cops with a fancy name.

HI2thDoc's avatar

Position, authority, credentials, education mean nothing if the person is a miscreant. Look at Flynn, former Lt. Gen. He's a conspiracy insurrectionist nutcase. SS agents got caught hiring prostitutes in Colombia in 2012 and then trying to stiff them on the price (no pun intended but it just kinda happened).

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

Too many conservative Q-anoners.

Patrick Daniels aka Cromulent1's avatar

All time historically great video it would make H11!

Kathleen Weber's avatar

Jeff, now that you've endorsed Kamala, how many times do you plan to vote for her? We all want to know.

https://neelthakrebew.substack.com/p/gop-freaks-out

Jeff Tiedrich's avatar

as many times as the law allows

Kathleen Weber's avatar

But I have evidence... do you care to comment?

Aleksandra Wolska's avatar

This election may not be close. It may be a landslide for Harris. This is not just my gut or heart or some other organ telling me that, but the likes of M. Moore , Ann Selzer (Iowa pollster) and others. Due to this - possible - overwhelming defeat, MAGA's may not even be able to muster enough energy for a violent response. May it be so. And then we begin rebuilding.

Ann Anderson's avatar

My gut tells me that MAGA violence and uprisings will fizzle because their leader has fizzled. Women are going to deliver to Trump and the jerks who support him an epic ass-kicking - not just my gut, but the ppl you cited and Simon Rosenberg.

He's a creepy bugger, who doesn't "people" well. He's like one of those changelings, not quite normal enough to pass for human. DeathSantis too.

Deborah Hunter's avatar

MAGAs are like the Energizer Bunny. They never run out of steam. They've been at this for 8 years now. They're just more covert since 1/6/21. Why do you think he's wearing gold and black all of a sudden? It's a signal to the Proud Boys. I think this time the real diehards will become more sophisticated with their violence as in bombing election sites or state houses. I doubt that you'll see my all time favorite this time around - the Shaman guy. He's in prison and I doubt that anyone will try and take his place. Good luck getting near the Capitol this time, but you can't protect every election site in the country. I think the idea of many years in prison will deter most of the types you saw on 1/6/21. The radical cultists aren't going to give up Trump.

Mary Hall's avatar

Sorry to be the one to tell you but that weirdo Shaman mofo is out of prison and actually running for Congress in AZ -- https://www.vice.com/en/article/qanon-shaman-running-for-office/

The radical cultist will not give up Trump but they may have to go into hiding again (I doubt they will want to rise up for their leader). This time, however, let's not allow them to conspire in darkness of our own collective political unconscious. In other words, I hope we've learned something. Making darkness conscious is the work ahead.

Nancy Potter's avatar

The whole men-against-women vibe that the Trump campaign has taken on has started to remind me of the Barbie movie - Trump wants to have a mojo dojo casa white house. Of course, the Barbies overcame the Kens in the end, and everyone was better off for it.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

They discount women coming out to rage-vote, and being pissed about Roe being overturned in the Dobbs decision, they said we will get over it.

Amber Marie's avatar

I voted early on Halloween and my treat was casting my vote for Kamala.

Rick Calegari's avatar

We did as well and got confirmation the very next day that the county election office received our ballots. This election eve is particularly stressful as we anxiously wait for this MAGA shitshow nightmare to hopefully be done and over with. Demented Donnie believes he's several yards from the end zone but better yet, let's think it's more like The End for him.

Patrick Daniels aka Cromulent1's avatar

It will be the “end zone” sans ball in his grasp Rick!!

Rick Calegari's avatar

He fumbled that ball away, among other things, many years ago.

Ann Anderson's avatar

This feels like the longest day of my life. Time will pass even slower tomorrow. It's an advantage being on the west coast because I have to distract myself only until about 5 pm or so when there ought to be something significant to report from the east.

Patrick Daniels aka Cromulent1's avatar

Lucky for you Ann, enjoy a good book, go for a nice walk or ride, with a smile on your face.. or just dream of the end of a tyrannical connards days in the spotlight!

Ann Anderson's avatar

All of the above plus a jigsaw puzzle and maybe some baking. :-D

Have a good day yourself.

Cathy 98280's avatar

The trouble with baking is the scarfing down of the results asap.

Hannah's avatar

If I could still bake, I would tomorrow and I would eat the whole thing.

Declan's avatar

Probably 10p for you!....thats 1a EST....it may even take till Wednesday PM to know whose winning decisively

Thank you everyone! For being here when I needed a laugh, and to be talked off the ledge. I appreciate it. Now it's time to win and win BIG! Then we attended to the task of flushing the maga turds down the toilet of history.
