Jeff, thanks for the super cut of Kamala warning all of us what would happen if these Trump taxes were enacted. Let’s be clear about what is not being discussed, cost of pharmaceuticals going up, health insurance going up, and most importantly auto insurance going way up due to the fact parts are manufactured outside our country. “Golf with MAGAS” this week was rather enlightening as my cart partner, 80 years old, let the F bombs fly over the proposed Trump tax and since he’s having issues with Social Security this guy is really pissed at Musk, Doge and Donald.. I told him that I warned you MAGAS all this shit was going to happen if you had taken the time to review Project 2025… it told everyone what was going to happen, but you believed a carny barker… Best to all.

I think we have all been reading your updates with great interest, wondering when the last straw would come.

It occurs to me that many of these MAGA people are/were concerned with things that were none of their business to begin with... things like abortion, trans people, religion, etc. They voted on their bias and hate and got bit in the ass.

Expand full comment
celeste k.'s avatar

This is the most important thing I've read in comments on several sites. The fact that someone who hates all those things were never forced to abort, or become transgender, or worship a religion, but voted to try to make others do as they would. It's simply wrong, and now efforts are being enacted to deny them to all.

As a nurse in an abortion clinic, I can't count the number of times patients have said to me, 'I don't believe in abortion, but...'.

To those who voted for that traitor, next time, it might be your wife or your daughter, or YOURSELF who needs our services, and suddenly find you're not really opposed to it when it's YOU. Every woman has a reason, and Susan is right...it's no one's business.

The American christo-fascist patriarchy start with being undeservedly wealthy, and want to be wealthier & more powerful by emulating the RCC (or Iran's theocracy). One starts by making women 2nd class citizens, with no rights & no power. Denigrate all others, especially gay people and transgenders. Destroy due process. Great point, Susan, about the MAGAs trying to dictate things that aren't their business.

Years ago, unmarried partners' rights were on the ballot here in Ohio (before same-sex marriage was legal). The idea was to give spousal rights to people who just lived together. It was partly a workaround the prohibition of same-sex marriage, but applied to any cohabiting partners. We had friends who were a heterosexual couple who'd lived together for years, but weren't married. The guy was pretty anti-gay, so he voted against the legislation. The woman said, "Great. You just voted against OUR rights. The referendum just cites cohabiting partners. It doesn't specify heterosexual or homosexual. WE would benefit from the legislation. Besides, if there's a gay couple down the street, what impact does it have on us, anyway?" And so it goes with bigots.

Yes, I saw a great documentary about the male penguins that stand together in a big circle, taking turns freezing on the outside of the circle, while continually shuffling on their web feet, trying not to drop or expose the egg they are attending to while the females hunt. A grim duty. It was actually a depressing movie. But these male penguins accept their responsibility by pure instinct for survival of the young. Apparently, female penguins proved their hunting abilities over their evolutionary arc while the males proved their endurance by supporting the flock and young above their own comfort. Now, if the females have to pay tariffs to the polar bears for the fish, as many already do and never return to feed the male and newborn, a whole ecosystem could disappear!

I never knew this before I went to Antarctica, but polar bears are at the North Pole and penguins are at the South Pole. They never see each other so our sweet little penguins are safe from polar bears, but the seals at the South Pole eat them :(

Yes, "groceries, it's such an old-fashioned word". This from a moron who's never been to a grocery store. I'm wondering what Sundowning Grandpa Befuddlement calls a 5 pound grocery bag with 10 pounds of shit in it. Is it still a bag with different things in it? I'm truly convinced besides the advancing dementia (tarriffs on penguins anyone) that he suffered anoxic encephalopathy with his bout of COVID. Oy!

What's crazy is that while Trump, as we know, is two-going-on-three cans short of a six-pack, there are people around him who can still tie their own shoes and find their own offices who support and prop him up. Certainly, Trump couldn't have devised the formula for calculating tariffs, since it involved fractions and percentages. Why do ostensibly smart people go along with this bozo?

Musk will be toilet paper before May maybe and many will sigh and think the carnage will stop, but that signal chat about bombing with zero trump input was enough for me to know he's the wacko salesman up front but the whole group behind him are working really hard to get their objectives executed.

There are really good articles on substack about what to do and how despots were overturned in modern times in other countries. Basically you need the involvement of 3.5% of the people, so that's 10.5m in the US. Then you have to do something that inconveniences or disrupt daily life for people who could otherwise ignore what's going on - that's why general strikes work. If the hairdressers decide not to show up for work they don't get paid. If pilots decide they aren't flying, that's a shit ton of disruption and big ripple. If waste handlers decide to strike even the wealthy to drive by the garbage...NYC anyone? This is why MLK was murdered, he was about to consolidate the civil rights movement with the labor movement. The next frontier in freedom is both civil and labor rights.

I am, or should I say, was, one fucking year from my husband and I finally retiring & enjoying life. A year and a half away from being able to get Medicare. My husband (who recently had pneumonia & who served 8 years in the Marines) could not get a VA appointment for weeks. And no one at VA answered the phone, so he had to personally show up there to find this info out.
