The stock market has been so overvalued for ten years, I'd be very cautious about anything except environmental stocks. We've had two big drops between 2000 and 2010. I remember when Chevy was selling at $2 a share. I waited until my company stock (Gap) was worth more than it was selling for a share when I got the discounted stock and sold it. How old are you? What I have is now in interested bearing accounts in my credit union and we're living on SS.

Only he men can go though, because they have to work their lungs up to being able to breathe that thin air by working out. Musk should go and take Trump with him, and also his buddies Thiel, Bezos, Zuckerberg, and anyone who can make a trillion off of the Trump administration.

Then, the rest of us should stop paying taxes, since there is no one to collect them, and they aren't going to any services except lining the pockets of the departing billion and trillionaires, and then we should take that collective money and 1) buy back all government assets that Trump is currently trying to devalue as quickly as possible before selling them off to his friends for bargain basement prices. 2) build us a government that works for the people.

At dinner I was telling my husband the story. What we are wondering is how did the tariffs make the price go up on a pickup he already had in his inventory? Where is this pickup from? Pickups seem to be such American produced vehicles, where the term gas guzzling is not in the vocabulary for many. Who else is producing them? We are not understanding this, or why the auto industry would complain to Trump about tariffs, when that should ensure that people are forced to buy American vehicles, where they can then jack up the prices for other reasons. Not clear on this. Can someone please explain?

That fits with Trump's logic which is becoming clearer to me as I read a book called Freedom's Dominion by Jefferson Cowie that my Democrats Abroad book club is reading. The idea is that there is more than one understanding of freedom. There is freedom of the bigger stronger to bully the smaller weaker. Trump is only looking out for White Afrikaners because that is what Musk is. He is punishing Ukrainians who are here on temporary visas. Hopefully other countries will step up and offer them a place to be. Canada should consider it. It is close.

Reminds me that I was discussing with a friend today maybe US citizens in Blue States can go to Canada if Trump tries to annex it, and apply for refugee status as victims of persecution in the US.

Expand full comment
kdsherpa's avatar

Actually, the muskrat is not an Afrikaner. He was born in South Africa (apparently after his MGF, who was a Nazi, fled with his family to Canada; he didn't like the race-mixing there, so he took them to S. Africa). He just very strongly identifies with the Afrikaners, and knows that they would be loyal subjects of the orange sadist. I read somewhere that they don't want to come! LOL

Expand full comment
Linda Weide's avatar

I knew that his grandfather was a Nazi and expelled from Canada, but I also mean Afrikaner, in that he believed in and supported apartheid, not that he was of Boer Dutch descent. While Musk doesn't speak Afrikans, his mother does. So, that makes him a son of an Afrikaner not by descent but by adoption of culture.

Linda Weide's avatar

I liked to see Illinois as contiguous with Canada through Wisconsin and Minnesota who both have Democratic Governors. I am an Illinoian, who is currently mostly living in Germany. Iowa has changed so much in my lifetime from common sense people, to strange thinkers. I have to go through Indiana to get to friends in Michigan.

Once drove to Indiana State to get paintings for a friend of ours who had broken up with her boyfriend there. I told the friend I went with who was Russian and Jewish, and me with brown skin that we were not stopping at any bathrooms on the way. Just no drink and get to our destination.

Then we went with our friend there to a state fair, and there were pick up trucks in the parking lot, which was a sea of pick ups, that had shotguns hanging in their trucks, and signs that said, "I hunt coons with blueticks." I learned that was a kind of hunting dog, but the double entendre of Coons did not escape me. The only Black people at this fair were safe enough because the people there were so blotto drunk that they could not see straight. One was working in the "spook house." The other was soliciting. Also, the most popular thing there was the John Birch Society tent.

That is how I think of Indiana mostly, except for the beautiful dunes, which is a different world from the rest of the state it seems.

Our Dem neighborhood was caught in a shoestring slice that went from midtown to the outer north GOP suburb so our votes were cancelled out. The white supremacy was explained to me and the neighborhood segregation was clear but it was class seg also - lots of gates and walls.

The worst aspect of all this is that nobody's going to want to do business in or with the US, even its own business people. Who's going to want to buy a Dodge franchise or start a small company when business conditions change from day to day? Who wants to sign an agreement with the US when the next president can end it with an executive order?

Additionally, China and Russia will move into the power vacuum and start their own versions of USAID or other aid. Not the way the US does it, either, chiefly altruistically. China will want things in return for their aid - you think Dumpy's demands for mineral rights from Ukraine are bad, wait till China gets their hooks into underdeveloped countries.
