Mr. President, do the tariff rates change at all on July 9 or do they change on August 1?”

“They're going to be tariffs. The tariffs are going to be the tariffs. I think we'll have most countries done by July 9. Either a letter or a deal,” he said.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick then stepped in: “But they go into effect August 1. Tariffs go into effect August 1.” Lutnick added: “But the president is setting the rates and the deals right now.”

Again I agree. The DNC has done a lousy job - no clear messaging, the Dave Hogg mess, their silence when they should be out there shouting. There's nothing CNN would like more than a dogfight. CBS, ABC, NBC, NYT, WAPO, LA Times have all been defanged by the Trump Mafia. Expand full comment
George in Atlanta's avatar

Welp, time for a little 'splainin', I suppose. These are some facts I've picked up along the way, but bear in mind I'm Liberal White-splaining it all to you, results may vary. Anyone with superior intel, please jump in and correct me.

1. A lot of people do not like to be referred to as 'Hispanic'. It implies that they are descended from Spaniards who got all, y'know, rapey with native women in the Southern Americas.

2. Some other people might LIKE the word 'Hispanic', for the same reason, though avoiding thinking about all the raping part. Reason being, 'White Is Right' has penetrated most minds in the world to one degree or the other. The Spanish, being European, are often considered "White". That matters because humans are racist as shit.

3. On balance, 'Latino/Latina' (do NOT use 'Latinx', which is bad for other reasons) *may* be a reasonable default to use for most people, though they may tell you if they prefer otherwise.

4. That daddy/dictator trope is a bit... insulting. You might want to ease up on that.

So here's my conclusion, such as it is: yes, some people, including some Latinos, think of themselves as White. Whether or not they call themselves 'Hispanic' is individual preference, I suppose.

I don't know much about 'Texas Hispanics'. I met a lot of people in my years there whose families partially hailed from South of the Border. For reasons unknown, I saw a real trend there of German boys marrying Mexican girls and raising up a living room full of rugrats. Said rugrats call themselves TexMex, if anything. It's messy. Like humans all are.

It's a reminder that tragedy (preventable or otherwise) doesn't care about your political affiliation. It doesn't care whether you are "in it" for the liberal tears.

And why should the criminal elect accept any responsibility for anything? He has subverted the entire justice system so he will not be held responsible for any "official" act.

The extreme climate catastrophe in Texas is just the beginning. Public health is at risk. Public infrastructure such as air travel is at risk. Food safety and the spread of E-coli and Salmonella will soon be displacing stories about Texas floods, extreme hurricanes, and massive wildfires.

The DOJ has been subverted to pursue political opponents and people of color. Government watchdogs formerly charged with investigating corruption are marginalized. Millions of families will lose access to healthcare -not immediately, because voters will forget the "Big Beautiful Tax Fraud" that is piling debt on top of debt.

The Judicial System now has Thomas, Alito, Roberts, Kavanaugh, and Aileen Cannon as case studies in corruption, incompetence, and betrayal of fundamental responsibility to justice.

The United States as a global partner in trade, defense, and climate are no longer. We are now as much of a pariah as Putin's Russia, Netanyahu's Israel, and Hamas' Gaza.

No, the plane crashes, the Texas floods, wildfires, concentration camps, State-sponsored kidnappings and trafficking, the deployment of lethal military forces to U.S. cities are simply the very beginning of what is to come. The on/off tariffs and corresponding insider trades.

But it's not all bad news. Putin will have Ukraine. China will own science and innovation. Kushner/Trump/Netanyahu will have beachfront Gaza resorts. And Musk, Bezos, and Thiel have their tax cuts.

I really am out of it. I looked him up - his last name is really “Lutnick”. Hahaha I would have edited my comment but I couldn’t figure out how.

His real name is Howard Lutnick, but folks (did Jeff start it? I can't remember) have started calling him "Nutlick". It fits.

That’s why that insufferable prick wants to eliminate FEMA so he can screw with the blue states and extract an ass kissing from the red ones. Come on cheeseburgers, do your thing…

If you can sniff glue and imagine Joe Biden acting like this after a disaster do you think he would get away with it? If he weren't 25th Amendmented on the spot you would have numerous Democrats calling him an asshole. The coverage alone would assure nobody supported any initiative of his again. Same with Kamala Harris.

I expect some new atrocity will happen this week to push this out of the news as the refuge in audacity continues.

And this is the deference you get by serving both the unreconstructed and the wealthy.

Every time Joe Biden went to Rehoboth Beach, which is just a helicopter ride from the WH, Fox News was all over it. But Trump can take Air Force One and fly to his golf courses and not a peep from the media.

Trump’s golfing rate has actually dropped in the last few months. It had been in the low 39 percentages to high 20 percentages. If he golfed “only” [every] weekend, he’d have a percentage of 2/7=28.6%, but it’s now down to 22.62%!

Gosh, I hope he’s getting enough “me” time. Otherwise it’s bad for his mental and even physical health.

Boo Hoo - was heard somewhere in his administration. Dead people don’t matter to these fecal sniffing slime bags…. unless the dead were a political advantage to them somehow.

Actually, no boo-hoos that I heard of. Sen. crutch from TX said that it was god's way of bringing his people together to help one another. holy mikie said "tots and pears, lots and lots of 'em." Oh, yeah, rep. marsha of the poofy bouffant said, "don't you DARE talk about that stuff now! we're in MOURNING!"
