We live in the Algarve as we were so spoiled with Napa Valley weather, we opted to keep that similarity, plus I craved water. Yes there are lots of expats, but we've only met 2 US couples so far, so not many countrymen. Lots of Brits, Irish, Scandinavians, Germans and French. Virtually everyone under 40 speaks English as it's required in their schools. Older people no, but they get cafe latte por favor or cerveza which is pretty universal even in the US. And the locals are lovely. This is a tourist area and the livelihoods of so many depend on us as well as the locals when we shop, dine, uber, etc. so yes, they're not just friendly, but helpful and very much into live and let live. We've been here 7 months and have yet to read about a shooting, murder, even robbery if you don't count an occasional pick pocket claim but only in the big cities. It is very much as advertised with the added bonus of great health care at extremely reasonable cost.

We live in the Algarve as we were so spoiled with Napa Valley weather, we opted to keep that similarity, plus I craved water. Yes there are lots of expats, but we've only met 2 US couples so far, so not many countrymen. Lots of Brits, Irish, Scandinavians, Germans and French. Virtually everyone under 40 speaks English as it's required in their schools. Older people no, but they get cafe latte por favor or cerveza which is pretty universal even in the US. And the locals are lovely. This is a tourist area and the livelihoods of so many depend on us as well as the locals when we shop, dine, uber, etc. so yes, they're not just friendly, but helpful and very much into live and let live. We've been here 7 months and have yet to read about a shooting, murder, even robbery if you don't count an occasional pick pocket claim but only in the big cities. It is very much as advertised with the added bonus of great health care at extremely reasonable cost.
