does everyone know the story of the Mary Tyler Moore pool shot used at the top of this post?

https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/1h2oq6z/this_trick_shot_by_mary_tyler_moore_was_actually/

"This trick shot by Mary Tyler Moore was actually made in one take. They had planned for a pool expert to make the shot after cutting away from showing Moore hitting the cue ball. But to everyone's surprise, she actually made the the shot."

Speaking of running the table, there's even more good news from Virginia. In addition to what Jeff reported, we defeated the Repuglicon Attorney General and shifted the margin in the House of Delegates from 51:49 to sixty fucking three to 37. That means, Fuck You, North Carolina: you reapportion to add a MAGA, we'lll reapportion to add a human.

The key lesson for Dems is, they have to actually make the shot!

Ever since Reagan, 70% of Americans have either already landed in poverty or are one illness or other unexpected financial hit (or job loss) away from joining the ranks of the impoverished. The party out of power talks a big game, the voters change horses every two or four or six or eight years and then the disgruntled American notices nothing has really changed, or in the case of the GOP — OMG it’s taken a horrific turn for the worse that we never thought possible. Here in PA tRump promised to stop taxing Social Security and tip income and lower grocery bills, and voters now realize that was all pure bullshit to get elected. They’ll now punish tRump at the ballot box until he takes his last breath.

Mamdani, if he freezes the rent increases and runs free buses and makes city life a tad more affordable in other ways, will be rewarded with a landslide re-election in four years.

Pres. Obama solved maybe 12% of the 100% screwed up U.S. health insurance disgrace, and it barely got him re-elected but the system remained 88% screwed up while Hillary was taking a smug victory lap.

Dems need to promise big things AND DELIVER ON THEM, the way FDR and Mary Tyler Moore did!

Expand full comment
Linda Weide's avatar

The Key lesson for Dems is those who voted for Cuomo should join the MAGA party where they belong. After all the head MAGA endorsed Cuomo, and he fits right in with their brand. So apparently does Chuck Schumer.

However, let us not get into magical thinking. Dems can only deliver on big things if Republicans do not get in the way. More easily done in states than in the Federal government.

Dems also need to let the Republicans keep shooting themselves in the foot. Soon it will be them shooting themselves in the head as the 2026 elections roll around and we are still in shut down. Every American who can ambulate to the polls to vote should be getting themselves there then to vote out this monstrosity that is not running our country, but is in charge of running it.

President Biden got infrastructure passed, he even got improvement on gun control, he got lower prescription drug prices. He got work on climate change he out maneuvered Mitch McConnell, and then he gave so much of the infrastructure money to red states to show them that they were in the most need and he was going to take care of them even though they didn’t vote for him. He got so much shit done even after the nightmare pandemic that Trump mishandled (except for the vaccine creation - not the vaccine rollout. Trump did not have a plan to get shots in arms at all). So Biden walks into a nightmare. The transition was undermined and delayed by a corrupt Trumper idiot. Biden had a tiny majority and yet he got all that stuff done. So the argument that Democrats need to deliver doesn’t ring here. The one thing that Biden didn’t do was make sure that Trump never saw the light of day again. Merrick Garland pick for AG was a disaster and a mistake that wounded the world.

Expand full comment
Bob Bowden's avatar

Eileen, the Infrastructure Bill for the nation is not nearly as impactful to the average voter as the grocery bill they have to reach into their pocket to pay. And whatever progress Joe made on Climate and on Guns is laughably inadequate compared to the enormity of those seemingly intractable problems.

Back to prices, Dems said Covid caused the increases and now inflation is back under control. GOP said the price increases happened under Dem control and they are denying the severity of what happened, denying your lived experience, we get you and we will roll prices back to 2019 levels if you return the 2019 President to power, and enough stupid Americans believed that fairy tale to put him back in office.

Meanwhile Dems promised tRump would usher in Project 2025 and many voters thought they were being Chicken Littled, they had Trump for four years and he acted like a bit of an asshole but it wasn’t the end of America.

Now, in November 2025, those voters can finally see Trump lied to them in 2024 and the Dems’ warnings have come to pass. Thus, we got Tuesday’s electoral results

What is deadly crucial is the 1/3 of NONVOTERS in America. Not until they can be convinced to ACT and vote for sanity and human decency will the needle move in America, otherwise we will continue to be split by 3rds in the voting population. I am slightly giddy, but too old to be convinced that this "mandate" yesterday really means anything. The fight for sanity in America against our white nationalist neighbors, former friends and co-workers, family members, etc, has barely begun. This is a proverbial marathon. Sprints are meaningless. It took 50 years for MAGA to be fed and born. It will NOT go away anytime soon, anymore than 1/3 of Americans (who voted for this evil TWICE) will give up their wet dreams of lasting and permanent Authoritarianism!!!

Brad I completely agree. Watch BBC Rise of the Nazis - especially season 1 first two episodes. Free trial of BBC available through Prime. The dark side is dug in. There are many fanatics who believe in Project 2025 and they are not gonna give up power easily. They took power by buying off the Supreme Court. They have no bottom. They are scary people. History is repeating itself. HOWEVER, as Jeff suggested, let’s be happy with last night’s blue wave.

Trump made a huge mistake in his second term. Unlike smart dictators, he walked into office and began taking away the goodies from the people who got him there. He inflicted suffering immediately. Smart dictators trick their voters by giving them some treats for the first nine months and then tighten the screws and make their lives miserable . That inability to get completely entrenched and then take away all of our freedoms - that opportunity for now was missed. We still have a free press and obviously we can still vote and push out Republicans. But it’s not over. Like I wrote earlier, the GOP is end and full of nasty scary people. They’re either cowards or they’re power hungry greedy sociopaths who care nothing about people.

Brad Bray's avatar

Agree and have seen that BBC series. Powerful, indeed. What I am preparing myself for is the rigged election in 2026. I'm serious. Trump (or his smarter minions) have and continue to put in federal positions those who will be in charge of "election oversight." That is straight up fox "oversight" of the chicken coop bs. I hope to god I am surprised if the election results turns out anywhere being fair. But, again, and as you powerfully stated, "they have no bottom." I would be shocked if they DIDN'T try to rig the election since they have the power to appoint people to important offices to make it happen. As mom always said, "time will tell." Ufda!!!

Thank you Jeff.

It is inspiring to see a growing majority of people, from the New York Mayoral race to California’s Proposition 50, electing candidates who embrace democracy, justice, and equality, and supporting measures to offset Trump/GOP gerrymandering of Congressional districts.

Between the growing No Kings marches to massive Democratic and Independent voter turnout, every Republican up for reelection in 2026 must now understand they can continue to support Trump’s corrupt, illegal, unconstitutional, and cruel actions as they become more unpopular or embrace justice, force the release of the Epstein/Trump investigation, and hold Trump/Vance, and the Trump Cabinet responsible for their assault on democracy.
