today in Shit That Happened While I Was Busy Writing This Shit—

"Hakeem Jeffries and Jared Kushner Meet Privately as Midterm Attacks Fly

President Trump’s son-in-law and the man in line to be speaker of a Democratic-led House discussed how Democrats and the administration could work together."

https://www.nytimes.com/2026/08/23/us/politics/jeffries-kushner-private-meeting.html

why? why? WHY? I SWEAR, MY FUCKING HEAD IS GOING TO EXPLO—

Tess's avatar

Mine too…kushner was never elected…why the F is jeffries working with him? Gimme a break!

Lucius's avatar

Because Jeffries (and Schumer, and the rest of party leadership) are controlled opposition?

rlritt's avatar

Oh don't start dissing on the Democratic leadership already. Let's see how things work out. Whether we like it or not, if the opposition party is in the majority they are obligated to meet with the President as the Executive branch. The question should be why isnt the President able to meet with them personally.

Lucius's avatar

They've been having a running competition to see who can do the best Neville Chamberlain impression for the past two years. I'll diss them as often and as obscenely as I want.

arne link's avatar

It is your right. We still have First Amendment rights here on the Jeff Show. I'm quite sure that all of our names and info is going into a file somewhere so Fcuk Drumpf.

Chris Hierholzer's avatar

I keep a fresh box of donuts near my front door.

arne link's avatar

It's pretty obvious that Drumpf is mentally unstable. Kushner is his go to guy, so he was the logical choice from Drumpf's handlers' point of view.

Cyndi's avatar

Kushner is trying to hold onto the fortune he made off the Middle Eastern cabal. Believe it or not, meeting with him and getting stuff on record is a smart move for Jeffries. For Kushner, not so much.

Smells like desperation to me.

Robert Eckert's avatar

Nothing is on record. This was a secret meeting that was leaked by someone alarmed by this gesture of unnecessary surrender.

Lucius's avatar

Your optimism astounds.

Cathy Rady's avatar

because Natalie's too busy writing love letters to attend?

Robert Eckert's avatar

They need to out-Mitch-McConnell Mitch McConnell. No cooperation, on anything.

Mary Lou Williams's avatar

Seems like sending the wrong message at the wrong time.

rlritt's avatar

So should Jeffries not meet with the President if its clear the Democrats are going to win in November? That would be counter productive. Obviously Trump is not capable of having a meeting.

Lucius's avatar

1: kushner isn't elected and doesn't have a security clearance.

2: assuming that Democrats are going to win in November is premature.

3: if he absolutely did need to meet with someone from the regime, that can happen after the theoretical win in November.

There's no above board reason to meet ahead of time.

Cyndi's avatar

It is called preparing to hold oversight. Get things on a record the Mango Moron can't eat or delete.

rlritt's avatar

Except it isnt obviously a secret meeting. Maybe they were discussing what to do about Trump because he really is disabled. Who would know better than his son in law.

arne link's avatar

That is the correct answer. Bravo!

rlritt's avatar

So you think Kirshner is going to hand them a bag of cash?

arne link's avatar

Maybe Kirshner sees himself as a potential presidential candidate? I mean, JD gets zero votes from anyone.

rlritt's avatar

More likely Trump is mentally incapacitated and his handlers dont want anyone to know. Why Kirshner? Perhaps he is controlling Trump and doesn't want the extent of Trump's incapacity to be discovered. Thats the real issue, not why is the Democratic leadership meeting with the Executive branch. Wait till they meet and see what Jeffries says.

Mary Greenwald's avatar

Jeffries is working with Kushner because he is a yes-man. Yes to Trump who hates black people and Democrats!!!

San's avatar

Trump is a big ball of HATE. No wonder his body is collapsing in on itself. All that hate he carries eats him up.

DJ Headthrob's avatar

He's not unlike Chaucer's Summoner who is literally rotting from the inside.

PurpleHoorean's avatar

Excellent reference!

Carol C's avatar

Makes me want to read Chaucer.

rlritt's avatar

Who says they are working with Kirchner? All it said was the President arranged a meeting with Kirchner and Democratic leadership. It should be with the President, but obviously Trump is not capable of doing that. Why Kirchner, I dont know, but if the Democrats take the Congress, the Democratic leadership usually always meets with the President. It shows me that they think the Democrats are going to be in power after Nov, which is good.

Diana's avatar

Does he even have his security clearance yet??

Steve in SoCal's avatar

Security clearance? We ain't got no security clearance. We don't need no security clearance. I don't have to show you any stinking security clearance!

Angie Longenecker's avatar

No fucking way. He can’t get security clearance until he gets out of Netanyahoo’s britches.

Chris Hierholzer's avatar

That won't be easy. It's nice and warm in Netanyahus britches.

Martha Howell's avatar

Kushner doesn't have Senate confirmation, or probably even a security clearance.

rlritt's avatar

Because Jeffries is a normal politician who believes you meet with the people and discuss what is needed for the country's government to meet its goals and obligations. The fact that Trump does not understand any of that, and is only concerned with how will he benefit is why he sent his unelected son-in-law.

Also, maybe that answers the question that everyone is asking, since Trump is clearly declining who the fuck is running this country?

Cyndi's avatar

^^^^^^^^ THIS! ^^^^^^^^

Leu2500's avatar

because, unelected or not, he's who the felon uses.

Daniel M Kimmel's avatar

Exactly. The notion that Jeffries is secretly MAGA is nuts.

Lucius's avatar

I really hope this means people will stop defending him and finally start working to remove his ass (lol, wishful thinking I know).

Leu2500's avatar

On the one hand, I can see taking the meeting. Keeping avenues open, etc, etc. It's how the sausage is made & it ain't pretty.

On the other hand, I hope Jeffries told Kushner to convey to the regime that they better stock up on lube because the investigations are coming.

Natalia Lincoln's avatar

Got a sinking feeling it was more along the lines of “what is your bidding, my moss-tah” (—Darth Vader again).

Lucius's avatar

It wasn't. It was Jeffries getting his marching orders.

rlritt's avatar

Are you completely unfamiliar with the idea that in spite of the animosity between the two parties and the various branches of govvetnment they are still obligated to try to work together?

Lois Henry's avatar

Kushner is not government.

Robert Eckert's avatar

The fascists have not been acknowledging that the legislative branch makes laws or that the judicial branch determines how the law applies. There should be no collaboration with this utter lawlessness.

Jan Moon's avatar

rlritt . . . Are we completely unfamiliar . . . obligated to try to work together? Yeah, I guess I am unfamiliar with that idea during this regime. Haven't seen it yet.

Lucius's avatar

Republicans have ignored that idea for decades. Far past time for Democrats to give it up.

DJ Headthrob's avatar

Throw some sand and glass shards into that lube for good measure.

Joyce's avatar

They're being saved for the ground "beef" we're getting.

Ellen McKenzie's avatar

While we’re beefing (😉) up production of munitions, are we also beefing (😂) up production of lubes?

Joyce's avatar

We can't beef up anything.....Not unless we import the beef.

It's about time for the old "Where's the beef!" commercial to be pulled out of storage. Although, considering the ground beef announcement, a better question would be, "What's in the beef?"

Daniel M Kimmel's avatar

Apparently we're beefing up the importation of mystery meat from unknown places.

rlritt's avatar

Im sure that will be part of the conversation. Maybe Kirshner is there to notify Jeffries that Trump is no longer capable and what should they do going forward.

Suzanne Tollefson's avatar

NO. NO NO NO NO NO. It’s like trying to coordinate the retirement party for your best work friend only to have Marsha, the busybody who orders supplies for the break room, show up and report she’s already taken care of it — now it’s being held on a Tuesday in August at 2 p.m. at the last remaining Sizzler in the state with a permanent HELP WANTED sign and no air conditioning.

DeBurgh's avatar

It's more like "make him an offer he can't refuse."

Cheri Collins's avatar

My fucking head had already exploded from the assassination of our geopolitical best friend by the crazed frontotemporally demented malignant narcissist psychopath! 🤯🤯🤯🤬🤬🤬

DJ Headthrob's avatar

Carney would have earned my undying admiration if he threatened to shove a hockey stick where the sun don't shine.

Richard Von Busack's avatar

I still have hope things will get back to normal once that stinking turdface is pushing up his beloved grass.

Nancy Potter's avatar

I expect that we'll see another TACO move when someone explains the Canadian retaliation to him. Trump (after quietly buying certain stocks) will announce that Canada has backed down on something-or-other so Trump is dropping the tariffs to 20%. We'll see if his lies to manipulate markets work as well when the adversary is a country with a free press as they've worked for him in Iran.

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

This appears to be lightly sourced as far as why they met and what they may have discussed (no one seems to really know), and it feels from reading the coverage as if it is being framed deliberately to outrage our side (some media is already covering this as "the left is outraged) and cause us to eat our own and weaken ourselves. Remember: the NY Times is NOT on our side.

rlritt's avatar

I know and its a totally stupid controversy. Kirshner is meeting Jeffries. Obviously not secretly since everyone knows. If it was a pay off or capitulation on the part of Jeffries wouldn't it actually be a very secret meeting, i.e. not in the NYT?

Robert Eckert's avatar

It was leaked to the NYT by someone gravely concerned that such a meeting should not be secret.

Wren The Hen's avatar

I’ve been defending Jeffries because the attacks seemed over-the-top and perhaps designed to fuck with any chance of unity within the party, but, um, meeting with Kushner? That’s fucking disturbing.

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

Except this story from The NY Times seems designed to create dissension among Democrats too. What would be the good of meeting with Kushner on "housing, immigration and cost of living"? He's a slumlord, he's has no involvement in immigration and the only people he's ever helped are the ultra-rich — go ask the Albanians." Who are "two sources familiar with the meeting"? Name them. We know Maggie Haberman has a pipeline to Trump insiders and her stories have frequently favored Trump because of this. The NY Times LOVES to lean into the "Democrats in disarray" narrative and if they can help make it happen, they're not above that.

rlritt's avatar

Exactly. What is more likely is that Trump is incapable of meeting anyone. Kirshner may be meeting with Jeffries as a heads up about Trump. They aren't going to say that. Kirshner is obviously in an advisor roll, and can be an appointed by the president to hold meetings. We dont know. Apparently Jeffries is about to find out.

Diana Hembree's avatar

I'm glad to know about the meeting.

Diana Hembree's avatar

Stephen Brady's avatar

Jared Kushner - Ambassador Extraordinaire and Plenipotentiary... and total imbecilic fuckwit.

Sharon Hudnall's avatar

If the Dems take the House in November, wouldn't Jeffries replace Mike Johnson as Speaker? He could lead an impeachment vote against Shitler and/or other catastrophic failures in his cabinet. He could cut off the hemorrhage of financial and military largesse to Israel. But that would all require more courage than Jeffries has ever shown.

Robert Eckert's avatar

I do not want Jeffries as Speaker. We need an opposition party.

Leu2500's avatar

the new Congress isn't seated until 1/3/27. There's 2 months between the election & then.

Just another reminder that we need to get the federal government off the agricultural calendar it's based on. At least we don't have to wait from Nov to Mar (waiting for the spring thaw & travel to be easier) like we did in the old days.

Stephen Brady's avatar

He would have to be elected Speaker. It is by simple majority and I suspect the rethugs won't vote for any democrat. So, it remains to be seen.

Joyce's avatar

I'm hoping, in my heart of hearts, that this is exactly what Jefferies told the Plastic Boy.

Frank's avatar

As far as the US Government ever being trustworthy, look at their dealings with the Indigenous Peoples of this country. Every treaty ever signed has been broken as soon as Uncle Sam found an excuse: Gold, silver, high value farm or ranch land, uranium, water, etc.

Look at how this country has treated people of color. We have worked for centuries to recognize all men (and women) have been created equal, yet the Republicans are rolling back measures that ensure equality. Gerrymandering to eliminate any power at the ballot box.

Currently the Christo-fascists are plotting to take away the vote from women. If we can’t trust these people to treat us fairly, why would they treat foreign governments fairly. We are all just nuisances to the oligarchs that own our government.

Lisa's avatar

Kushner is a scummy little POS! WHY would Jeffries meet with him? Can we trust Jeffries? I’m skeptical about any democratic member of Congress meeting with a member of the Trump Mob.

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

Can we trust The NY Times? Who are "two sources familiar with the meeting"? We know Maggie Haberman has a pipeline of Trump insiders and her stories are frequently slanted to favor him. Destroying Jeffries' credibility and causing Democrats to have an internal war could be at the top of their list. And this comes out just as Jeffries' plan for reining in the Supreme Court came out this week; that he said Jamie Raskin will be in charge of it is probably causing a lot of MAGA pants-wetting and Trump diaper-loading. That there is panic on the right about this is shown by a story in the right-leaning The Hill this morning called "How Reforming the Supreme Court Could Backfire on Democrats." https://thehill.com/opinion/6043861-supreme-court-reform/

So who's to say Maggie's unnamed sources aren't Trump insiders trying to weaken Jeffries?

Robert Eckert's avatar

Destroying Jeffries' credibility appears to be at the top of Jeffries' own priority.

arne link's avatar

Hagerman has always carried Trump's water. I was shocked to hear that there was a bit of negative information in her recent book (which I will not read.

Chris Hierholzer's avatar

Jeffries should have kicked Kushner in the nuts with great fervor. Someday my prince will come.

Joyce's avatar

Or at least handed the Plastic Boy a skateboard. DIY

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

He may have figuratively done so. Reading the stories it appears as if what they discussed is largely speculation. They may have discussed the timing and order of subpoenas for all we know.

Robert Eckert's avatar

The secrecy about the discussions is precisely why this is unacceptable.

Cheryl Ramette's avatar

I had the same reaction when I read this.

DeBurgh's avatar

The Trump Family does not hide its demand for loyalty, where ever it can buy it. The GOP is gone. Rename it The Trump Party now. The 272 members of the Trump Party in Congress work for the Family now.

The Trump Family's clear and public message to the Dems: get in line and you, too, can lick up the crumbs of the billions we are taking.

Mephistopheles to Faustus. Sell me you soul. Sell me your sacred honor. Take the money!

rlritt's avatar

Maybe Kirshner was trying find out how soon after the Democrats win control do they plan to impeach Trump.

Deb's avatar

It breaks my heart to say this, but the Democratic Party as presently constituted, is not a fully-functioning opposition party with moral clarity on the important issues to the majority of the Democratic base. Money is corrupting more than MAGA nowadays.

Tracey's avatar

No! We cannot and will not work with them!! WTAF??? Is going on with Hakeem Jeffries???

rlritt's avatar

Right! Absolutely. What we do not want is a functioning government. We want Democrars who refuse to be in contact with the opposition and shut their eyes and close their ears and not hear one word of what's going on.

Ann Anderson's avatar

Good picture of Claudia.

So. How much longer can we sustain ourselves as a nation under these conditions? Just when I think Fetterman is the biggest disappointment going, Hakeem Jeffries says hold my beer.

Mingo's avatar

Hakeem is having his Neville Chamberlain moment. He's an appeaser.

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

We don't have the information to say that but boy, we sure love to undermine ourselves and hand Trump more power.

Brett Beiner's avatar

True, and we will never know for sure. But we can make some assumptions. Kushner has been accused of feeding information about Iranian negotiations to Benjamin Netanyahu. Benjamin Netanyahu‘s biggest pac pays millions of dollars to Hakeem Jeffries.

My assumption is that Hakeem Jeffries cannot be trusted. What is yours?

Sharon Hudnall's avatar

Jeffries publicly stated that he doesn't support the agenda of Democratic Socialists of America, a gratuitous middle finger to Mamdami, Sanders, OAC, El-Sayed, and hundreds of thousands of voters who are sick of the losing Third Way centrists' capitulation to predatory corporate interests. So who's splitting the party? Looks like DSA is the only unifying force in the party.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmR0Pn7QgpI

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

No, it's NOT a "gratuitous middle finger," but an essential protective move, given the outrageous, borderline insane policy statements made by at least one DSA national official which are getting a TON of oxygen. Jeffries and Mamdani has a cordial working relationship; El-Sayed is widely viewed as an anti-Semite, where one has to tread carefully. Sanders is an unaccomplished nudge. And the Third Way, suddenly being pushed by the media, hasn't had anything to do with Democrats in nearly two decade — I don't know of any elected Democrats that are part of it. And there are few real "centrists" left in Congress. DSA is been used as a major dividing force and a force for ill, which is why even candidates supported by them are keeping an arms' length. Actual progress is coming from REAL, non-DSA progressives such as Liz Warren and Ed Markey.

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

I have no assumptions at this point, particularly since I am reading all the stories about how Jeffries et all are preparing to go after the Trump administration.

Sue Pike's avatar

Prime Minister Carney says America signs its agreements in pencil. Touché monsieur!

Trux Mint In Box's avatar

I know this is a crazy question but what happened to the tariffs being ruled illegal?

Jeff Tiedrich's avatar

I know, right? I couldn't find any good reporting that mentioned the SCOTUS ruling, so I left it alone

Leu2500's avatar

Here's the dodge. SCOTUS ruled that using particular sections of the US Code was unconstitutional.

So the regime is now invoking OTHER sections of the US Code.

It's whack-a-mole. & our legal system isn't set up for it.

Michelle Vancura's avatar

Actually, I looked this up, and there are some trade acts that the supremes ruling doesn’t effect. One of them allows the president to impose tariffs on countries that engage in specific unfair trade acts. This does NOT apply to Canada. Another act grants the president authority to levy tariffs based on national security threats. Also does NOT apply to Canada. The third act permits temporary import tariffs up to 15% to handle serious balance-of-payments emergencies. I’m sure this is the one trump is applying to Canada, but I’m also quite sure he’d be hard pressed to prove in court that Canada is violating this act. He’s such a mother fucking asshole. I hate the bastard 😡

Daniel M Kimmel's avatar

Per NBC:

The new tariffs were imposed under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, which has never been deployed before.

The law allows the White House to implement duties of up to 50% on any foreign trade partner that “discriminates” against U.S. commerce.

Nonetheless, the new Canada tariffs are all but certain to be challenged in court.

Michelle Vancura's avatar

Yes, you’re right. The Tariff Act of 1930 is the Smoot-Hawley Act. It was supposed to protect American farmers and businesses from foreign competition during the depression. Unfortunately, it started a global trade war that made the economy worse, which is why it’s never used, unless it’s by a revengeful, ignorant asshole occupying the White House.

Dave Drell's avatar

Everything he does is illegal!!!

Judith Barzilay's avatar

This is complicted. Retired USCIT judge here. There are many statutes governing different kinds of tariffs that the US can apply. The tariffs that were ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court were imposed under a different statutory provision. These new tariffs are subject to being challenged at the Court of Intl trade, and they will be. Chances are they will be ruled illegal also but it takes time, a lot of time. Which of course we do not have.

Daniel M Kimmel's avatar

There are several different laws allowing the imposition of tariffs. The one Trump initially tried to use was overruled by the Supreme Court. THESE new tariffs on Canada come a different law that -- according to news reports -- has *never* been used before.

Joanne Rossmassler Fritz's avatar

Trux Mint, that's not a crazy question at all! It's a great question. That was late February, right?

Tess Enfield's avatar

I believe he's using the Smoot-Hawley Act from the 1930's. Never been used before, but leave it to this orange, drooping sac.

Mary Brock's avatar

Canadian here: It is very difficult to even like your country again. And my family live in the Detroit area, half of which voted for the orange fuck. Now, I boycott all things American.

I miss NYC. Even though I do love Mamdani , that is not enough for me to return to the U.S. I will miss you all. You really are good people. I know this. But I am not going back. Keep up the good fight.

Lucius's avatar

A lot of us don't like our country. Can't blame you for not liking it either.

Michelle Vancura's avatar

When this nightmare is finally over, please come back. The great majority of Americans love our Canadian friends, and are ashamed and appalled at this raging pile of insanity that is currently occupying the White House and all his despicable minions.

Mary Brock's avatar

It is my plan. 🤞

We can do it.

America's right wing, under the leadership of a charlatan snake oil salesman, has had its season to prove "the South will rise again". Nothing could be more emblematic than Trump's rally for Darlene Graham this week.

158 years after the end of the "War of Northern Aggression" against Southern slavers and insurrectionists,, the right wing is back out, showing America and the world how they believe their grievance driven world should work. Include totally pissing off Canadians who admitted runaway slaves in the 1800s.

There's only one problem. Americas didn't buy their grievances in 1868 and we DEFINITELY don't buy it in 2026. If anything is rising again in 2026, it's the better angels of the American dream, ready and able the rebend the arc of history in America back towards justice.

Stacey's avatar

I CANNOT even believe that the Thing in the White House wanted his negotiators to fuck with our rules about French on packaging etc. You can't attack something that is fundamentally about our country (2 official languages) and then think it's a good deal. You cannot limit Canada's soverienty by telling us who we can and cannot trade with. And there is no reality in which Canadians would want to be the 51st state. EVER.

A bit late (or early) for This Week In Stupid, but here's one: Jeffries meeting up with Jared fucking kushner to find "common ground".

Presumably in their shared goal of keeping the Democrats as controlled opposition.

https://www.nytimes.com/2026/08/23/us/politics/jeffries-kushner-private-meeting.html?unlocked_article_code=1.7lA.nJFQ.OosQFHDhV85s&smid=nytcore-ios-share

Kathleen Weber's avatar

Jeffries says we gotta get rid of Pete Hegseth ... No! We gotta get rid of Donald Trump!

Lucius's avatar

I mean, we need to get rid of both...

And Jeffries himself.

And Schumer.

Michelle Vancura's avatar

Actually, we need to get rid of trump, his cabinet, his in-house nazi miller, his diaper bag toting fan girl, his kiss ass Congress, his fucking family, etc., etc. Of course, that will leave us with JD, but if he has any hope of a political future, he’ll play ball with the democrats and actually do something productive for the American people. Time will tell, but the one thing I do know is that our country can’t sustain this lunacy much longer.

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

JD will have no political future. He is a doughy, awkward person who will appear weak and unappealing to MAGAs and they will stay home. They aren't a party, they are a cult of one person and it ain't JD.

Carol C's avatar

I wish someone would kidnap JD long enough to shave his facial hair. Or just post everywhere pictures of him in younger days pre-beard. Pillsbury Dough Boy absent any cuteness.

Not that appearance signifies anyone’s character. But when I see Larry Ellison I am reminded of Snidely Whiplash or the devil.

AuntTeeFa's avatar

That’s a pretty bad idea, JD is controlled by Thiel who together with Russia brought about the reign of terror known as 45th Preznit

arne link's avatar

IDK. I think that Thiel has moved on from JD. He used him successfully and now he is no longer useful. He will find someone else now.

Michelle Vancura's avatar

So true! But unfortunately if Trump goes, we’ll be stuck with JD to finish out the term. If he’s smart (which, of course, he isn’t) he’ll agree to pardon trump and his enablers, and once sworn in as president, will renege on the agreement. There’s no law that says he has to follow through with a pardon, something I never understood about Ford pardoning Nixon.

Daniel M Kimmel's avatar

Ford's mistake was not simultaneously pardoning the Vietnam draft resisters, turning the page on both Watergate and Vietnam. Instead he pardoned Nixon and proposed a way for the draftees to "earn" their way back.

Susan Marleau Whelan's avatar

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

It's unclear from this article what they ACTUALLY met for, but remember: The NY Times is our enemy. They put Trump in office when they basically invented the "her emails" candidate, and they're probably salivating at the thought of getting us to turn on Jeffries even more, so he can't execute the things he's proposing such as siccing Jamie Raskin on Supreme Court reform.

Lucius's avatar

Jeffries refused to do his job and whip the caucus to vote against ice funding. He's shown repeatedly that he's not going to do anything goddamn useful.

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

He most certainly has NOT "refused to do his job." Despite total Republican control of Congress, they have been unable to get virtually anything passed. That stalemate is in large part due to Democratic leaders blocking destructive measures. And one of the ONLY bills to pass this session was a Democrat-led progressive bill: the Housing bill which became law despite Trump's refusal to sign it, with strong bipartisan support (not just a half dozen people).

Leu2500's avatar

"They" didn't put the felon in office. The Republican powers-that-be had greased the skids for Jeb.

Then the felon showed up & none of the clowns running knew how to handle a bully.

& what the set up for Jeb made it impossible to stop the felon.

Daniel M Kimmel's avatar

And Bernie is really a double agent, spying on the left for Trump!

"Your Bernie, wheeeze cough, your Bernie...he couldn't even win California! KAFF KAFF. He ENDORSED Hilary! Mebbe you don't remember? He endorsed her!"

"He did it, cough hack, he did it holding his nose! HAWK SPiT"

(Jamaican nurse, "Now now boys, it's time for your pills.")

Daniel M Kimmel's avatar

I, for one, will be glad when Bernie leaves the national stage.

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

Which Bernie? I get confused because one of "my" purported senators is Bernie Moron-O. If you mean Vermont Jesus, yeah, he's the worst.

But not for him. For him it turns to gold, at least this time.

Thank you! This is the American perspective on the trade talks I needed to see this morning. Hopefully some day, some year, we can all be trusted friends again, and my wife and I can vacation again in the wonderful Hudson Valley. 🇨🇦

Can you revoke your American citizenship?

I really wish I could leave the country and revoke mine...

Susan Niemann's avatar

I have looked into the process. It's certainly possible. Spain would be my first choice. Start with a non lucrative visa for a year.

It seems more and more people are becoming expats. Costa Rica, Portugal, Mexico... it is very possible.

I don't have the money, or a skillset that I could turn into a viable job. I really wish I did though.

Spain is very very affordable…depending on how you want to live, of course. It wouldn’t hurt to research it.

Yes. You can renounce US citizenship. The government have recently (April 2026) lowered the cost from $2,350 to $450. You need to add to this the cost of legal and accountant charges for filing federal taxes for the previous five years. Get anything wrong in the latter and you not only will not be allowed to renounce but may also face criminal charges with the onus on you, not the tax collectors, to prove your innocence.

Many thousands of dual national Canadians, Green card holders, accidental Americans and longterm ex pats were forced to deal with all of this, either renouncing US citizenship or being fined for not paying double taxes (paying full federal taxes to the US, added to those of country they reside in) going back five years, from 2010. Also being legally obliged to pay double taxes thereafter. Obama legislated to globally enforce a double taxation law from the Civil War era. Originally brought in by Lincoln to pay for the war, until Obama it had not been universally enforced.

A friend who earned US citizenship and returned 6 years ago to her homeland of South Africa is facing ex-pat hell -- first from JPMorgan Chase freezing her bank account here due to perceived foreign hacking, and second from the double taxation requirement. If she doesn't file and pay the penalties, her Social Security benefits are at risk. The State Dept. is broken, absolutely no help at all. She's 85 and can't cope.

I have been through this cruel retroactive nightmare years back. It cost me dearly in both material, familial and emotional ways. People who have not experienced it can not begin to understand the Orwellian punitive terrorism of it.

If she has not already discovered it I highly recommend visiting Canada’s dual national double taxation portal the Isaac Brock Society: https://isaacbrocksociety.ca/

I found the information and other’s tragic stories a life saver during my exhausting tussle with US citizenship bureacrats and Federal tax officers.

Trump has finally found a way to unite Americans and Canadians: consumers on both sides will pay more because one man thinks tariffs are invoices mailed to foreigners. Canada asked for a coherent trade agreement. Trump apparently offered a hostage note with last-minute demands. Now our closest ally says the old relationship is gone. That is the real cost of governing by tantrum. Prices may eventually fall, but trust does not come with a presidential reset button.

That rambling, shambling mass

Is so easy for Carney to outclass

With an ego so fragile

And mind so unagile

Canada reliably kicks his ass

Governing by tantrum. Good one, and perfectly said.

Obama was accused of going on an "apology tour" after Bush Jr. The next president really will have to do one.
