isn't it weird that our invasion of Mexico happened four days ago and it didn't make the slightest ripple in the press? I didn't hear about it until yesterday

Steve in SoCal's avatar

“Changes in water depth and topography altered the perception of the international boundary’s location.”

The GPS on my phone shows where the border is

Punkette's avatar

Agree, Steve. I call BS too. They knew exactly where they were. Kudos to Mexico for pushing back forcefully.

Has anyone done a wellness check on the editorial staff of the Onion lately?

#growingconcern

George in Atlanta's avatar

This is a good point. They must be very depressed.

Kaye Stone's avatar

The Onion is probably going out of business. There's no fucking way they can top the everyday bullshit of this shitstain administration.

macwithhisbooks's avatar

Tim Onion put a post one day, "I'm going to break character today, no way I can top this."

Deborah Hunter's avatar

Read between the lines:changes in the depth of cerebral spinal fluid in these morons brains and the lack of topographical depth of gray mass contributed to this.

Military contractors doing an Erik Prince Blackwater maneuver? How about fining and firing these Orcs? Oh that's right, they were just kidding around.

Elizabeth Schulz's avatar

These 'current' contractors/subcontractors are the same old, same old. Prince (brother of Betsy DeVos) STILL owns them - he just changed the name a couple of times so no one would associate them with 'blackwater'. They are. I'd bet they're the same morons who got themselves hung and executed last go round. They're the same kind of red-neck fuckwits as the Jan.6th idiots - signing up to join HIS group pretending they're 'military' while not knowing their asses from their elbows. I'd guess that the signs also could be left over from the blackwater days unless there's something specific to date them more recently?

In other words they fucked up. Maybe. Who are they going to invade next? Canada? Makes me feel so secure.

We have come to accept levels of incompetence, mendacity, aggression, thuggish buffoonery, racism, hatred, idiocy that even five years ago would’ve been unimaginable. Plus the editors at NYT suck.

P123Sunny's avatar

“Calling for these Democrats to be executed for posting a video is yet another step and escalation. That Trump has done this and will suffer no consequence whatsoever means that the feedback loop will only strengthen. It is now, regardless of how outraged we are, how disgusted, how alarmed, accepted for the President of the United States of America to not just harbor these desires but to give voice to them in public. That means the possibility of these desires being acted upon now becomes more likely and, depending on circumstances, yet another escalation seems certain.“

- Jared Yates Sexton

Mps's avatar

Is there a level of mendacity?

I see none.

Neal Stiffelman's avatar

Yeah, at this point—and I considered it—that goes without saying.

Michelle Kenoyer's avatar

Pour one out for those worthless scribblers of our joke of a mainstream media. Seriously, our MSM is trash.

Steve in SoCal's avatar

With apologies to actual trash

Michelle Kenoyer's avatar

Indeed. Our landfills, after all, serve a purpose.

PlasticFish's avatar

Actually, they don't. Sweden hasn't had them in years.

Lisa K. Obrien's avatar

I visited Sweden in 1978, and I was absolutely blown away by the recycling system of the average Swedish citizens’ household. Given the U.S.’ proclivity for flashy wrapping and plastic enclosing everything; consumption on perpetual overdrive; combined with the phenomenal laziness of the average American citizen…landfills aren’t going to be abolished anytime soon.

Doc Blase''s avatar

The 5th of this month marked the one-year anniversary of unplugging the TeeVee machine. That day I covered it with a sheet, took my Comcast box back to the store and discontinued Sling and Netflix.

The past 12 months have confirmed the choice beyond any doubt.

Heather's avatar

Same! Were there any real consequences? Why do I suspect the answer is no…

Lois Henry's avatar

I just now heard of it and I thought I paid attention. How much are people who are, “not into ‘politics’ and don’t want to discuss it“, missing?

BluDotInARedSewer's avatar

A LOT, and I’m getting tired of trying to keep them informed. My BF said she couldn't keep up bc it stressed her out too much. I said, think how stressed you’ll be when you wake up in a Handmaid’s Tale outfit?

Lois Henry's avatar

Yeah. My daughter, who has two adult daughters of her own, still has a childlike faith in the mysterious “them”. She believes ”they” won’t let things go too far and “they” are looking out for things like insurance and climate change. She’s a college graduate!

Kaye Stone's avatar

I see many people in Utah who think tRUMP is sent by God to save the country from the democrats. Same people who insist that women wear a dress in church... the Mormons. The Mormons are also some of the most loving, caring, giving people in the world, as long as the receiver is a Mormon.

Ellen McKenzie's avatar

I’m not sure that being a college graduate or not is the issue. Just being naive?

T L Mills's avatar

That's what my BF said. I've known this woman since I was in college--well over 50 years ago-- and we were driving to an outlet mall in NH with a third friend. The the other woman and I were talking politics a mile a minute (we're on the same page) and after about 40 minutes, my long time friend begged us not to talk about politics because "it gave her a headache".

I told her we'd stop....but to think about how big a headache she'd get when democracy was killed and we woke up to a fascist government. ARGH!!!!! SMFH!

T L Mills's avatar

I should note that my friend has always leaned conservative (her family comes from downeast, traditionally very conservative...however her cousins are all thumbs up with a local: progressive Dem, Graham Platner.) But Trump's crass vulgarity and obsessions with revenge and corrupt grifting has forced my friend to repudiate both Trump, Project 2025 and the Republicans in general. I have tried not to focus too much on the Republican plunge into fascism...but sometimes I just want to shake her for her determined "head in the sand" stance.

Carol JLH's avatar

One of the things I really enjoyed about the Biden years was waking up every morning without having to fire hose events and revelations that happened while I was sleeping. I try to triage everything but there's just too much.

A.J. Madison's avatar

Shocking! Competent Government actually doing its job. (note: only one political party believes in this. The other party is too busy stuffing their pockets to even care about the civilians nor even pay attention to their constituents). God I miss those days.

PTW's avatar
Nov 21Edited

I honestly think that is why "the media" were so hot to get rid of Biden, and by extension, Kamala Harris. Competence is B O R I N G, no clicks or eyeballs to sell hamburgers or Toyotas to. I know I paid a lot less attention to daily news out of DC when Biden was there.

Elizabeth Schulz's avatar

I think YOU really have just nailed it. THEIR lives - and their jobs, depend on making NOOZ and who makes better NOOZ than the orange fuckwit currently occupying OUR White House with his never-ending fuck-wittishness? We HAD competence, someone who was actually FIXING what ailed us from this moron's previous 4 goddawful years...we HAD a good, decent man who lived his own faith while NOT remotely trying to impose it on others (just like JFK); we HAD decent people behaving DECENTLY but NOOoooo, that didn't suit the long-planned-for project 25 crew OR those who needed NOOZ which got them all giddy every fucking day, so here we are - yet it's 1000 times worse! Did they not spare a second to think that it could be? AAArrrgh! I did - and I'm positive most of us here did too!

PTW's avatar

Money drives everything. That is the basic motivation of the corporations, not what is best for the people, the country.

Elizabeth Schulz's avatar

I've always believed 'follow the money' is the way to go, but with THIS lot - one also seems to need to 'follow the cruelty and hatred'. They run hand in hand. Seriously, have we had a more vicious lot IN power over the last 100 years? I'd guess not? Yes, there was MCarthyism - but not everyone followed him - some stood up. There was the awfulness of the KKK AND the Nazis (including Lindbergh)...we've had those vicious crowds' faces pointed at and attacking those little girls (and boys) integrating schools in the South but WE in the North tried our best to not be like them (although finding out about so much of what went on in other States NOT in my history books has given me a LOT of pause, lately)...racism is still alive and well, even in people I know, so there's that. (I'm not omitting the extreme damage and harm to our Native American tribes - just the few Presidents over the last Century)...BUT, WE stand up - WE speak up, JEFF writes and speaks for so many of us and we all applaud his take on it (at least I do - and I see so many others do as well). There IS hope. Follow the money they're clearly stealing from We the People (I believe the whole thing with Musk was so frump could raid our Gold Reserves) - so far no one's shown me anything to disprove that thought...but we also SO NEED to toss out the viciousness, racism and haters. They're no longer welcome in OUR United States since all they do is cause extreme damage.

Most of the landscapers and stoneworkers who built our patios and front steps were from all over South America and I learned a few choice words and terms from them. We made long-term friends (they LOVED my cast iron and ceramic sign hanging beside my front door: 'Bienvenidos: Nuestra casa es su casa') which we bought and trucked back (it's SO heavy) from Mexico at least 30+ years ago on one of our trips when we'd drive to Arizona then take day trips down. 'Pendejo' was among my favourites. :)

The lack of interest in whether or not we 'mistakenly' invaded Mexico is indicative of how totally fucked the information ecosystem is right now. Elizabeth Schulz's avatar

piss-drunk pete forgot to tell the people he fired to change the signs before they left? hehehe

Unity In Defiance's avatar

As for the invading Mexico’s borders:

As a veteran, this hits different.

U.S. contractors putting “DoD Property” signs on a Mexican beach isn’t a mistake — it’s a warning sign.

Borders don’t “accidentally move themselves.”

Sovereignty doesn’t get “confused.”

This is what creeping authoritarianism looks like: testing lines to see who pushes back.

Mexico did.

We need to pay attention.

This is the shit Putin does.

Maria Devereux's avatar

Yes he does. There is a rolling barbed wire " fence" that marks the border between Georgian and Russian territory that gets moved a few hundred meters onto the Georgian side every year.

Sharon Hudnall's avatar

It's how Netanyahu and Trump are getting their Gaza Riviera, using genocide as a real estate transaction.

arne link's avatar

That is absolutely true. It was the plan from the beginning. HAMAS just helped to speed up the process by murdering those kids at a concert. I have to wonder what their stake in the new resorts is going to be.

Elizabeth Schulz's avatar

Arne - they ALSO invaded homes, raped and murdered women and murdered babies! Joe Biden saw the photos and was stricken, reduced to tears. It wasn't a 'one-off' at the Concert but far more wide-spread, with soldiers on guard even being captured (and held or executed) as well. I'm not so sure about Hamas being complicit in these fucking planned 'resorts'. More along the lines of the fucking orange CREEP currently occupying our Oval Office seeing the rubble and deciding - isn't there water right past those destroyed buildings? We can make a resort there if I just get bibi to go along, and of course I'll make him call it 'trumpriviera'. I fully understand why people are so pissed at Israel BUT they should equally be pissed by Hamas hiding in tunnels beneath and behind Hospitals and homes where Palestinians lived and trying to save their little ones' lives. THEY played a huge part in the massacre of civilians they don't give a damn about. Did anyone ask how THEY maintained their food rations during the entire time? How did they feed the hostages? As far as I know none of them starved, although their rations might have been very lean. WHILE the people up top were being systematically starved to death INCLUDING babies, 'somehow' Hamas managed to get the supplies for themselves. This has stuck in my craw since day one and I've been waiting for just ONE person to bring it up.

Patrick Daniels aka Cromulent1's avatar

It’s nice to have people of like mindedness here Sharon!

Doc Blase''s avatar

By the time Ukraine is done with it, the resale value of that mobile fence is going to be nil.

Michelle Kenoyer's avatar

Agreed with you here, but--and I am LOATHE to give these people any credit whatsoever--the borders may very well have been hard to decipher due to changing water levels, which are in turn due to climate change, which Trump and his decrepit party refuse to do anything about...

A little change in subject. Woke up at 0500 for work and saw headlines that the Dept of Ed no longer classifies nursing as a professional degree. Theology, of course, is considered a professional degree. This impacts the amount of money for graduate nursing education. It also impacts physical therapists and educators. You have to have a masters degree minimum to be a nurse practitioner. Physical therapists need a doctor of physical therapy degree. Some states require a doctorate degree for nurse practitioners. As a nurse of 45 years with an MSN degree, I was so pleased that I have a piece of s*** degree apparently in MAGA world. But theology degrees are professional degrees. My suggestion to MAGAs is next time you have a heart attack, call your local church instead of a hospital to save you. Nursing instructors need an entrance level of masters. Not surpringly, they are targeting a profession that is overwhelming female and a shortage right now. Healthcare industry has contributed over $1.43 billion to fed candidates between 1990 and 2024. I can guess without too much effort which party got the majority of the money. Good luck keeping your cash cow going with limited staff in the future. Are you listening Rick Scott???

Liz and Max the No. 1 Cat's avatar

Every nurse I've ever interacted with has been professional, as well as kind, generous, and helpful. My respect for nurses is greater than my respect for doctors. Nurses are true heroes 👏

arne link's avatar

No joke: many, many years ago, in Florida, I was chaperoning a class trip to the Everglades; the parents of one of the students belonged to one of those "Christian" sects that do not allow medical procedures. So Mother came in to meet with me, to explain the course of action in case of an accident--normal parents just signed off on the Permit To Treat form, and so I'd have the authority to race the child to the ER; however.....I was to call the boy's "spiritual advisor," who would pray with the boy over the phone; God would save him, or it was God's will. Mother: "I'm sure you'll be fine with this."

You all will be very proud of me that I did not let loose with a string of expletives.

"Even if I could GET cell service in the middle of the Everglades," I reminded her, I wasn't going to be "fine" with having her son's blood on my hands. Mother was very, very disappointed with me.

Dave Drell's avatar

Should have told mother to take her kid home- you were not going to participate in such

buffoonery !

I am appalled at the idea that nursing is not a professional career. I watched my granddaughter put in the hard work to graduate magna Ku Lotti with a BS in nursing. The id-iot in charge of the Department of Education has absolutely no idea what she is doing. As close as I can tell, the only thing she is educated in is Sham wrestling.

Doc Blase''s avatar

magna Ku Lotti, a degree with short pants? ^_^

That heroin-addled Nepo-fuck RFK Jr was the prototype from which God Mass-produced leeches

arne link's avatar

Ole Anderson's avatar

Leeches are actually a very effective treatment for a variety of ailments and have been used for hundreds of years by medical practitioners. Although misused terribly by some, including G. Washington’s doctors who literally bled him to death.

Doc Blase''s avatar

This sounds loony but it's actually true, esp. for plastic surgery patients. So Jr. is actually less useful than leeches. Sounds about right.

arne link's avatar

Outrageous. The maggots will need nurses someday. Where will they be? What do they think will happen? Oh, why ask. They don't think beyond the next grift.

Gail (Chicago)'s avatar

Thank you Deborah for being a Nurse. I have the utmost respect for your chosen profession. I do think that this is another way to attack higher education. We toured many Universities over the last few years as I currently have two daughters in college. Each University had excellent Nursing programs that were very competitive and only accepted the best of the best. I was impressed with how many young people that we met who were passionate about Nursing. I am sure this destructive move is trying to extinguish that passion. We cannot have a healthy society without Nurses.

Patricia Gomes's avatar

…and the American taxpayers are still on the hook for these asshole’s salaries? They are not even doing the job they are being paid to do. Who is watching them? Hell, I had more eyes on me as a Der Weinershnitzel employee at $1.85/hr.

I look forward to your articles every single day. You and HCR are helping keep me sane during this insane timeline. I laughed out loud at least 3 times while reading today’s article! Thank you so much!

I scroll X and despair...but Jeff offers the solace of laughter

Why would someone waste time scrolling X? If everybody ignored it - starting with professional media people - it would eventually just dry up and become just another far-right echo chamber.

It is GARBAGE personified!

Agreed...X was making my mental health go right down the shitter. I ended it and felt much better.

Christine Zepka's avatar

I just can’t with X. But good for you that you’re able to!

I never had any reason or inclination to ever go on twitter, but I get that it’s a generational cell-phone sort of addiction (unless your professional life required communication on twitter).

I can’t even imagine how Nina Burleigh Freakshow on Substack, knows and communicates with these wastrels Gina!

I reckon fatfuck got over his mushroom-shaped skateboard after seeing Bonesaws a’Plenty in those flowing threads sittin’ ‘n grinnin’ and wondered, “Hell, why don’t I just murder anyone who sasses me?”

That meeting was horrible to watch. Trump practically fellated him in view of the whole world. Disgusting. Vile. Repulsive. Words fail me.

DuduLovesBubu's avatar

Bitch Tits does have experience in the fellating department. Right Vlad?

arne link's avatar

Big time fellator.

"And I grab the hand. I don't care where it's been. I grab the hand." Barf. What in the hell does his trophy wife think when seeing him cheating with someone who ordered a mutilation of another human being?

Punkette's avatar

Tell it, Uncle Jeff! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I have two recommendations:

1. Immediately take Head Nazi Stephen Miller into custody. He is the instigator of this chaos and author of these dangerous posts. Dumpty is just his useful idiot. Miller is clearly insane and a danger to our Republic. He must be stopped.

2. Chris Murphy for Dem Senate Leader!

Add steve bannon please!

He will rot away eventually. But yes, let's speed up the process.

The unbelievable incompetence and bullshit rolling out of the Trump administration makes me speechless. I just can’t…..

I guess they’re all in so deep they can’t backtrack now… just keep voting in unison to make their own jobs irrelevant :/ SAD!

P123Sunny's avatar

I remember when you cared what electeds thought & did as individuals :/

Ditto Steve… big fucking ditto!

I will never forgive anyone who voted for this shit.

But they believe the Walmart Thanksgiving Surroundings Basket to be cheaper this year! FFS, they consider him Jesus incarnate just for that corporate ruse.

Weird how the invasion by the US military of another country isn't even the 'big news' of the day.

How big of a shitshow does this administration need to be?

Remember the "president of peace" line the Repubes rolled out in hushed reverential tones?
